BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!! If I could pick zero stars I would. Someone at work referred them and I thought why not let someone else do the leg work on my trip while I sit back and not stress over it....it turned out to be quite the opposite! This agency is incompetent to say the least! I could have done better if I had booked it myself and had way less stress!! They do not return calls or emails. They changed my original agent to another because the first was "too busy" to reply. This is a $10k trip with a 2 bedroom suite on a cruise and they couldn't be bothered to follow up or give me reminders of upcoming payment dates. Instead they called me the day before the balance was due and said we need it now. I had to email several times to get airfare booked as prices were just going higher and higher, that took a month for them to book! Finally after being fed up, I got thru to them this morning and asked them to release my reservations so I could make changes it to it myself as it would be faster. My dog sitter fell thru so I needed to change the flight day out to LA, it cost me $200 with the airlines to do so because they did not release my reservations. They told me thats not their problem it's an airline rule. I am still currently working with the cruise line to take them off my reservations as well. I had to hang up the phone as Mike was literally yelling at me into the phone. I could go on and on with the horrible details but bottom line....they are rude, incompetent, ignorant to their clients needs and basically think they are doing you a favor by taking on your travel needs. We had one meeting with a travel agent at Diplomat, and he told us to email him once we looked at the brochures he'd given us and finalized where we wanted to go and for how long. I emailed him our rough outline, and he said he'd get back to me the next day with a more final outline. The following week after not hearing back from him, I emailed him again to touch base. Did not hear back. I emailed and called him a week later, and received no call back or email. I then waited a few more weeks and called the office one more time. The receptionist told me that he told her he was busy helping a client adjust their flights due to bad weather, and would call me back later. Never heard from him again. read more

I used diplomat several times in the past, but when I went to book a trip this time, I was actually told I was an "unprofitable client". I had to cancel a trip in the past due to medical reasons, so I assume they were upset they didn't make money on that transaction, even though time was spent on me. It doesn't matter what trips were booked in the past or how much you make on a transaction, it's very poor business practice to say that to someone. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. This agency came recommended by someone I trust, so I thought I was in good hands. That was far from the truth. My friend did not use the same person as I did, so her trip/experience was far different than mine. They assigned me to Jim who was in the process of retiring, and believe me he already had one foot out the door while booking our trip. I usually book my own trips, but because we were traveling to Europe and using the railways, I thought it would be easier to get an agent. He never had a conversation with me as to what our likes and dislikes were, what time we liked to tour things, what types of hotels we liked etc.. The first mistake was the spelling of our last name on our airline tickets...had I missed that, it could have been a disaster. I never heard from him for updates, I always had to call and see what was going on. I was usually talking to him while he was boarding a flight of his own. When we talked price of hotel rooms, I stated I didn't want to go over a certain amount in DOLLARS per night. Never did he mention when he booked them, they were in EUROS. (in small print at the bottom of the documents it said euros, but I wasn't aware of it beforehand.) That put us over budget on 2 out of the 4 hotels we stayed at. I had to hurry up and give him our credit card so he could book our first hotel room, or we would lose our rate. He stated that it was paid in full on our itinerary, come to find out, it was never charged by the hotel. He booked us in the the wrong hotel in one of the cities we stayed, and to top it off, the hotel was under going a renovation, with banging and jack hammering starting at 7am. I would not have chosen to stay at any hotel undergoing a renovation, while on vacation. (I would think a seasoned travel agent would ask these kinds of questions) We had no recommendations on restaurants, which was disappointing, but all in all we made the best of our trip, utilizing the concierge, and doing our own research. We started using diplomat 18 years ago for our honeymoon. We have used them about once a year since then. We loved Jim, but since he has retired we have been using letitia lately and she has been incredible. Just today we found a better place for us to go, she was patient and due to us buying the insurance she was able to switch us to the new place. She is always a pleasure to talk to. I just have to go against the flow here and say that I had a very disappointing experience with Jim at Diplomat Travel. Though he's very knowledgeable and made several good suggestions for my trip, when it came to ordering tickets, he was untruthful, telling me that he had round-trip reservations on an extended hold until he could get better pricing from discounters. Then a friend who used to work for American Airlines told me such a thing wasn't possible - that holds were for a maximum of 24 hours. I confirmed with American that tickets had been put on hold under my name, but the hold did expire after 24 hours. I can't understand why this deception was necessary. How about being truthful, and saying something like,"I can only hold them for 24 hours, but I don't think you'll have a problem, and it would be worth your while, if we wait until the discounter's prices come out." Then, if I didn't want to take a chance and wait, I would have had the opportunity to say "No, let's go ahead and buy them now. I'd rather lock them in than save a few hundred bucks." Meanwhile, I called him with an unrelated question, and it's been four business days and I still haven't heard back. Just bad, bad, bad. read more

I normally just book our trips on my own. I am pretty good at it including side trips and amenities, etc. But when we wanted to take an extended trip to Hawaii and move from island to island I knew I may be over my head in booking. I chose Diplomat as the O'Malley family lives in my neighborhood. They could not have been any better. Jim helped us make choices and got us a car on each island along with flights between each island. He stayed in my budget and our timeframe. When we ran into a problem he was right there along with a member of his staff to get it taken care of. When that answer went awry, through no fault of Diplomat, they went to bat for us when we got back into town and the situation was corrected. I can't recommend them any more highly. read more

After explaining to her what my husband and I were looking for she recommended several destinations that might be of interest to us which took the stress out of planning. I am working with Diplomat for our destination wedding and I am on the verge of closing our account and finding a new travel agent. Calls go un-returned. Travel agent-y things like confirmation emails get forgotten. It's starting to be a "need to ask twice" kind of thing. Not the kind of stuff that you need when you are planning a wedding. To be fair, though, they did come up an alright package deal for the guests. read more

I posted a negative review of this agency on April 10 and now it's not showing up. What gives???? That makes me very skeptical of everything I'm reading on Yelp. FYI, here is what I said - Jim at Diplomat came highly recommended. We talked and he promptly came back with some options. I explained in the beginning that I was heading out of town and wouldn't be doing anything for a week. When I got back I sent an email to clarify what I was looking for. No response. I left him a message, he didn't return my call. I called again and talked to someone in his office who assured me he was on another call but had my message would get right back to me. He never did. I don't know if he thought I wasn't serious but regardless it was just rude and bad business. I ended up booking a great trip through United Vacations. I started out online but couldn't find the flight I wanted so I called them and they were great. You lose Jim. read more

I used them to find flight for a business trip that entailed multiple flights in Europe. Their knowledge and options far outweighed what was available on the Internet. I have had the best experience with diplomat travel!! Leticia booked my husband and my honeymoon in Hawaii!! It was absolutely fabulous! Everything went so smooth and she picked the best places for us to see! Our hotel were amazing as well! She is so easy to work with! I also recently called diplomat travel because I was stranded in Orlando because of the hurricane! They helped find me and 2 other work friends a hotel room when we couldn't find anything! Full service travel agency!!! I've traveled through them for years and I've always been please. The staff is very well versed in different destinations & extremely knowledgeable. I just got back from Costa Rica and had a wonderful time. Last year I was in Hong Kong and had to fly home for a family emergency, Jim and Mike talked me off a ledge and help me out in so many different ways. They were able to get me on the next flight out and were also able to get me out of Asiana Change fee. Can't thank Diplomat enough. read more

I've used Diplomat several times in the past and the service has always been very marginal. This Feb. 2015 I asked them to book a trip for my wife business class from Washington to Madrid, Spain. The ticket was $3700+ round trip plus the travel agent fee. It turned out that the connection in Newark was minimal, but worse yet, the carrier from Dulles to Newark had a mere 45% on-time performance, making it likely that m y wife would miss her connection in Newark, or her baggage would not make the connection. I called Diplomat and asked them to arrange an earlier flight out of Dulles to give a more adequate connection. I couldn't contact anyone for quite a while. Just an annoying phone message even during normal business hours. When I finally reached Diplomat, they said I would have to talk to the agent who handled my booking, but she was out sick. They said she would call me back, but no one ever did. After a few days of leaving messages on the Diplomat answering machine with no response, I finally got in touch with an agent there who told me that to change the Dulles flight to an earlier time would probably cost well over $1000 dollars. They wouldn't even try. I gave up trying to work with Diplomat and called United directly and they immediately changed the Dulles flight to an earlier time for $75. When the weather on March 1st and 5th cancelled her two trips, Diplomat was no help in rebooking. I worked it out by myself with United with no cost and no hassle. I would recommend either dealing directly with the airline or if you want to use a travel agent, definitely FIND ANOTHER ONE! read more
