I moved to an over-the-air shadow zone where I can no longer receive all of the 4 or 5 broadcast networks. I knew that cable (Comcast or Astound) was ridiculously expensive after the nickel & dime charges for DVRs and HDTV service were added to their so-called low rates. The only other choices were DirecTV & DISH. (One of the previous cable installers cut the internal phone lines in my building before I moved in, so AT&T is not an option.) I picked DirecTV about 2 months before they introduced Genie, so I am limited to recording 2 programs at once. I know that satellite & cable installers are independent contractors, but I happened to get 2 guys who did a very thorough job. I have no complaints about the initial setup or hardware. The DVR works nicely. The DirecTV Internet apps are also good. The customer service has been spotty. My initial sales rep was very good. She gave me the phone number and the dates to call so that I could cancel all the promotional services at the end of their free offers. I canceled my premium channels without a hitch, but I wasn't so lucky with the NFL Sundays service. When I called to cancel, I was told cancellation was unnecessary. Six months later, I see that I'm being billed for another season of NFL Sundays! Another service rep tells me that I should have seen the notice in my June statement which would have warned me that I was automatically opted in for another season. (This means that the lazy customer rep I had spoken to in Feb. did not realize that he needed to disable that opt in feature.) I use paperless statements, so I don't always view them. I will now! I may cancel service at the end of my 2-year DirecTV contract and switch to DISH. Either that, or I will install an aerial antenna on my roof and use a dedicated PC with an ATSC tuner as a DVR. If I'm feeling lazy, I'll watch content from Netflix, Hulu or some other online provider. read more

I'm finally figuring out that 'one star' reviews are for companies and people who are so dishonest that it borders on criminal, or so dangerous that you're glad you're alive at the end, and definitely not going to recommend them to any other fools. Direct TV is turning a company easily that bad. (I am in Richmond Ca, by the way, in a prime, low crime neighborhood.) I just set up a new account recently, after a year off while traveling. Today I called customer service, and I got a message telling me 'the card you set up for recurring payments has expired' . . then it told me how to set up a new one. The card they specified was mine, cancelled a few weeks ago by the bank due to a Home Depot security breach. Which is very odd, because the card we're using for recurring payments with Direct was not that card at all, but my daughter's card, tied to an account with me. So, even if somehow I used that card for something connected to Direct, perhaps security for the box rental or something, and forgot, why would they call it, 'the card you set up for recurring payments'? Even more worrisome was the warning to immediately set up a new card for this purpose. I asked the customer service person how they can make the claim that a credit card was set up for recurring payments when it wasn't? I pointed out that anyone might be worried and immediately follow the directions for setting up a 'recurring payment' account. It seemed like a scam to me to get customers to hand over a credit card with no limits, when in fact there was no need or real requirement to do so. He answered that they might as well, because if they ever use a card with Direct for any reason, Direct has the right to use it to collect arrears. He said they're being trained now to advise customers of this. I was so amazed I actually went to the considerable trouble of calling back, and asked another person, who said he believed that was false. What are WE supposed to believe? read more

DirecTV cannot send a technician to my home for 11 days to fix this thing. I have paid $6 for service each month for 6 years. And it will take them 11 days to send a service technician! I've made a complaint with the CPUC, Better Business Bureau, and opened a claim with Radvocate, and I'm just getting warmed up! I'm pissed! DIRECTV hiked our prices so I called them in February 2018 to get it down. They tried to put me in a contract and I told them no I was moving. I told them we've been a customer for over 5 years and I just want to get our bill down, because I didn't know where we would be in the next few months.  They said no problem,  just call them when I know more. I was very clear I did not want a contract and they put me in one without my permission or  knowledge.  He gave me a verbal several times that I would not be in a contract.  I thought a verbal was good enough, how can they put me in a contract just sending me an email? I just called to cancel my DIRECTV, without me knowing so they said they sent me an email and put me in a contract anyway. So now they are charging me $210 to cancel my dIRECTV and owe me for my expenses for trying to get my money back of $29.99. I told the supervisor, you tape all these conversations and go back and listen to the tape and he said he can't do that and he wouldn't give me the customer ID number who I spoke to back in February.  I talked to supervisor named Nick today 7/6/18 employee number in M17OC . I was duped So I started out strong saying no way to giving them my SS# for a quote & said no to giving them a credit card # for a $1 deposit to hold the quote. At the end I caved & gave them my credit card # & made an appointment for a technician to come out (which I was told was also necessary to get a quote) All for just a quote nothing more. I swear I was not born yesterday but something happened & I was totally duped. After finally getting the numbers I needed for the bundle costs I received 2 emails welcoming me to Direct TV. What? I never signed up! The next day I canceled the "appointment" then just to be on the safe side called customer service who informed me that yes I needed to contact them to cancel what I never signed up or agreed to. I guess the moral to this story is use your head which I did not. Next time I will hang up, lesson learned. read more

DirectTV is the absolute worst. They employ bait and switch techniques, have deceptive marketing practices, and are loaded with tons of hidden fees. They sneakily added a 'trial' premium package to my original service, didn't tell me about it, never sent me a bill. and then hit me with a bunch of legalize everytime I called into their customer support and tried to remove it. finally, after spending more than 8 hours of my time, I decided to cancel the service altogether. only THEN their "retention" team agreed to remove the service that I never ordered or wanted in the first place. By then, it was too late, because I had already ordered service through a competitor. And then to add insult to injury, they hit me with a $150 'early termination' fee, even though I had their service for almost 2 years, and paid my bills on time every month. I am currently still 'in dispute' with that bill, after 2 more months. I'm sure their next approach will be to try and tarnish my credit. If I had the time, I would take this up with the Better Business Bureau. I get the fact that they are in a highly competitive and commoditized market. But their practices are slimy by any standard, and they treat their customers like shit... Avoid these guys like the plague. read more

After 8 years of service they finally made us so mad we cancelled service. After 1 1/2 hours on the phone we're still unable to be connected to a supervisor. Then they tried to LIE to us and tell us we were under contract. When I demanded to show me proof of concern they could not provide it and then "waived" my cancellation fee. I wish there was a negative rating. We had an appointment scheduled, the technician left while we were clearing access to the basement (which we had asked about and informed was unnecessary). He said that he would be back in an hour. After 3 hours, we called Directv to check in and were told that we would receive a call back in 15 minutes. An hour later we called in again. After 5hours of waiting, we were informed that the ticket was closed because we needed landlord authorization!!! What? He left while we were emptying a closet! What a liar. Now we have to wait another two weeks and how many hours waiting for another technician. Plus, the customer service agents on the telephone were not helpful or understanding. read more

It's like dealing with thugs. The sales rep on the phone gave us a discounted price, $39.99. Our first bill was around $75. Called the customer service, spent hours, got disconnected, got transferred, got put on hold, to be told that this is the price, and that we didn't read some fine print. We never got the discount. It was a nightmare from day one. The installers never showed up, when I called to check on my appointment, I was told that it got rescheduled to 3 days later, just like that. Even the promised free installation, including a free tripod we were told, was not free. The installer left a mess behind him, including a giant scratch on our newly refinished hardwood. Customer service is horrid, don't expect help but rather brace for abuse. The discounts are scams. After I didn't get the initial discount, I called and complained bitterly, and insisted on speaking with a supervisor who can actually do something, the supervisor promised to apply a $10/month discount just to "make the customer happy", but even that I never got, and realized it's a waste of time to call back. The promos too are scams, they ran a promo to encourage everyone to sign up for online access, promising a free DVD player -- guess what, nobody I know ever got it. The DVR is a piece of rubbish. As far as I'm concerned, they failed to hold onto their end of the 2-yr contract, and in a fair world, I should've been able to dump them in the first few weeks. But they got a bigger team of attorneys than I, so I'll just wait for the agreement to expire and then flee for my life. No more dish or cable for me, there's plenty of alternatives now. read more

I vowed never to use Comcast for cable again after having billing problem, after billing problem. This review is not for Comcast it is for Direct TV. Direct TV now that they are with ATT are just as bad. They will have phone agents call you non stop to offer you "free services" like HBO/Cinemax. These are not free, and are actually billed to you once you consent. I have called them to receive credits for these services I did not request. They obliged. yet, the next month I am still being charged. Whaat?! I call again and am being told I cannot receive credits for these unwanted services because I will be disconnecting my account. I am being told I have to reactivate my account in order to receive credit. What sence does that make?! Upon asking for a manager I am being told the same thing!! I said there is an issue here because I am being charged for services I did not sign up for. They say they can transfer me to a resolution line. I ask for a number so I don't have to go through the many hoops in case I'm disconnected. I'm then told there is no number and I can only be transferred, and that I "wont get disconnected." I just wanted an idea of what the cost for the service would be along with internet. I answered all his questions but he never answered mine, he now wanted to know my social security number. BEWARE of these scammers!!!!! Signed on for less than 2 weeks and was told that if I cancelled within 30 days I would not pay a cancellation fee. A day after having the cable service, I had numerous technical issues; direct TV not working, channels not loading, etc. I called, and after being on the phone for hours, and having technicians come out 3 days in a row; it was fixed finally. Then a few days later, things start acting up, and channels not loading. After weeks of dealing with the unnecessary bullshit - I called Comcast to restore my previous service, and cancelled direct TV. Direct TV said that I would need to pay $400 to cancel their service!!! WTF!!! $400 is ridiculous! The company is not even to the degree of Comcast, and customer service is horrible! As longtime AT&T customers with land lines, mobiles, TV, and internet we were told that U-Verse would be phased out soon. So we needed to subscribe to DirecTV. Overall we've had a fair experience with their billing and upgrading to a higher package. However, recently there have been a couple of really glaring negatives concerning service. Firstly the closed captioning, which used to be fine, began to cut off and become sporadic. Thus, one would read incomplete sentences. We're not hearing impaired but do sometimes use CC in order to understand what's being said. Secondly and worse DirecTV offers 'On Demand'. Well, good luck trying to access anything that is on demand. Instead of showing the desired program selected one receives a rather stupid message saying that one isn't connected to the internet which is totally a lie as we are connected to the internet and it was never cut off at the time of selecting On Demand features. If AT&T/DirecTV wants to offer an outstanding product then they'd better rectify these glaring problems as they are things people are paying good money to subscribe to. Also another negative is that the movies offered on Showtime, HBO, and the like are all outdated ones 99% of the time nowadays. These networks are also things customers are paying for yet I feel customers are getting the shaft. Instead what AT&T does is show the most recent movies on PPV which is an extra charge. Technician Mark Brooks ID# 33075 is the best technician I've experience. Directv technician Mark Brooks is very dedicated and he will perform all of the necessary steps to complete the task. He upgraded my system today. I have so many trees. My house is an extremely tall very high two story home The satellite on top of my houses wasn't getting a signal due to the tall trees. Mark removed the satellite and he put the satellite on the highest part of my roof to get a signal. Superb Amazing AAA+++ Service. It's very hard to get good dedicated workers like this. . wow, what an experience; The FCC really need to allow other private companies to compete with these providers.. DIRECT TV is a turn and burn; somehow they will always get new customers in a restrictive space. Bottom line, the supervisor that came on line to closed the deal basically told me they can and will increase the bill 29 to 49 dollars after 12 months on a 24 month contract and they can decide how to increase the bill for the remaining 12 months. If you want out, you owe them $20/month for the remaining contract, no matter what kind of service you got from them as a customer.. This goes for DIRECTV everywhere... TERRIBLE!!! Stick with paying a high bill at Comcast or any other TV provider. First, they sign you up with packages you didn't even ask for and are not informed of being charged for until you receive your bill and when you call to cancel the specified package, they won't allow it, charging you an additional $40 each month on top of your regular bill for a service you didn't even want, didn't ask for, don't use and tried to cancel. Second, I've had 3 service appointments and the technician never showed up in their scheduled 4 hour window. In fact, the first appointment, they showed up 2 hours after their scheduled time, the second appointment, they showed up THE NEXT DAY, LATE, and the final appointment, they showed up 3 hours late. Third, when I called customer service to discuss these issues, the first representative I spoke to hung up on me, the second commented, "If I could beat up the technician, I would, otherwise, there's nothing I can do for you," the third representative I spoke to told me she didn't care if I switched services and wouldn't even waive my service appointment fee for that day because I was already compensated enough with the promotion they had going on of 3 free months of movie channels and $15 off my bill each month. I finally got to a supervisor, (Jake, last name unknown) and he was more than helpful, stating the service received was unacceptable and the 3 representatives I previously spoke to were conducting themselves extremely unprofessionally. You have been warned, KEEP AWAY!!! I had DirecTV and after their prices kept creeping up and up, I called them to renegotiate and to use the 5.99 per month protection plan because the wire from the satellite had come loose. It all still worked, but it was not safe hanging off my house in my backyard. First off, they said the protection plan did not cover the wire because it was an "Act of God." And second, they would not renegotiate my bill. I told them once I sign up with Comcast I am cancelling you guys soon after! I signed up with Comcast, and then called DirecTV and cancelled my service. They transferred for me to some fool who is now willing to fix that wire for free and talk shop about lowering my bill. I told him you had your chance, now cancel my service. He kept trying to change my mind, and I told him, to "F" off, and then he said, "Sir, I expect you to be professional" I told him, "Hey buddy, I am professional! Easily earns the Death *1* Star. Moronic call center so called customer service. These guys are bad! I currently have Comcast service. Got a flyer in the mail from Direct TV to check out their pricing. I have the Triple Play on Comcast which is HD TV, High Speed Internet and 2 land phone lines. I got a price from the center that was much lower than I am paying for Comcast. I then asked how fast is the High Speed Internet and how do they deliver it. After a bunch of bull, the answer was they did not know. So, they gave me another number to call. After all the irritating menus I had to go through, then I got a person that did not know either. Really dumb. So, they said they would transfer me to someone that could answer the question. I was on hold for 5 minutes then hung up. It is obvious they hire low level people and managers that work from scripts. They only can sell the package deals, and they are asking for 24 month contracts. They are not trained to answer any technical questions. Just a really crummy way to do business. They surely will not get mine! read more

I've had their service for about 6 mos after ending our long term relationship with comcast. In general, content is fine, and equip is good quality. In this hotter weather we've begun to experience reliability issues with Genie and Client (their name for the mini tuners) components requiring constant resets or reboots to the DVR. Our components are all well cared for and kept out of the sun. We've had occasional loss of connectivity, which typically gets restored with a reboot. Had the hardest time programming one new remote to match a new TV last night, and couldn't reach anyone on the phone. Another remote programmed fine. The jury is sill out on these guys. Luckily I got the Costco 2 yr deal with NFL Sunday pkg. UPDATE: I wanted to be fair. The remote issue has been resolved. It was user error. The customer service rep was very nice in walking me thru the correct sequence of keys to program the remote correctly. For some reason the Dvr box comes only with a genie RC17 remote, which lacks a lot of keys found on the older larger remotes. This makes setting remote to other devices difficult. read more

I called to remove a line due to a death in my family, and all the direct tv operator could do was try and upsell me to a new reciever and plan. I mentioned 3 times i was not intersted and to please just honor my request and reason for calling. Finally, i had to cut the operator off mid sentence as they launched into thier programmed patter AGAIN. The operator was RUDE, Un-senstive to my situation, and then became very standoffish. What a completely dishonest company! It's taken me three months ...and counting to cancel my service. I called in June to cancel. They billed me for July and August because they said I called to "talk about canceling my service" which is different than officially canceling it. After I received my final bill in August, showing nothing more owed, now in September they are billing me for pay-per-view movies they said I rented FOUR YEARS AGO - which happens to be exactly the amount I accidentally overpaid on my final bill $24.95. What are the odds? They said these movies were hidden on the SIM card due to glitches in the box and their system - from 2013!!! OMG - the idiocy! I will be writing a letter to the attorney general. I know I'll never be refunded the $24.95 overpayment but I can only pray this is the last time they try to extort money for me. Im writing this review based on an experience i had with direct tv's customer service 2 days ago. I signed on for a 2 year contract through costco. It was one of the upper tier packages for under $100 a month. They even handled canceling my comcast acount. Needless to say my bill found its way up to $160 per month. After getting an ad from dish network offering a 240 channel package for $69 (which would be more if you have more rooms than just one). I called direct to cancel. I was straight up with them saying that i like saving/making money as much as they do. The operator sent me over to a customer rentention agent. It took me about an hour of phone time to make it right But they made it right. Normally i would give them 4 stars. The only reason why i gave them a 5th star is because i have never been sent over to a customer retention with comcast and got the results i wanted. read more

After 10+ years, we canceled today because they dropped Versus (network for Sharks games and the Tour de France, among other things) for no good reason. This shout-out is really for the techs of DTV, not the actual TV service. We live in a rural area where cable doesn't yet run and has limited access to satellites. Other companies wouldn't touch us with a 10-foot pole, but DTV made an exception. Yesterday, we added another room. Took the tech (Brian) 4 hours as the entire thing needed to be rewired, and that meant climbing around the hillside in the dark with a flashlight. TV Service is so so, set top box technology is ancient. I have 3 receivers in my house. One box is 10 years old and ran extremely hot from day 1. it was so hot it cracked the top of my wooden dresser. DirecTV will not replace until it breaks. These boxes consume a lot of power to run this hot. Other receiver boxes are less than 8 yrs old, new technology but still run hot. With DirecTV I need a receiver box for every TV, Not sure why they can't have 1 receiver box for the entire house? They also tend to get into squabbles with the content provider channels. Latest one is with the weather channel. Not sure why they can't resolve without dropping the channel and impacting our service. They don't pass along the savings to the customers when they drop a channel. Because we have been a long time customer for over 10 years they are giving us free Encore for 6 months. Would be nice if the cable box video would go on and off every 2 seconds when trying to watch a movie. Not sure of this attempt to give you something for free that is useless to watch. I could do without it because it doesn't work. Customer Service is Zero '0'. I wanted to watch the Olympics on my mac. went to NBCOlympics and it wanted me authenticate my computer so I down loaded the DirecTV player application for the mac and updated my Adobe Flash player. never worked after fiddling with it. I called customer service and she gave me PC instructions that didn't apply to the mac. I told I was on Mac and needed help with the DirecTV app and she said call Apple. I then asked her how to uninstall the DirecTV app because it wasn't in the application or utilities folder she said call Apple and hung up. If I could give them a Zero '0' I would. I asked to speak to a supervisor and she hung up on me. they have the WORST customer service and WORST technical skills. I could probably live with this if they were $20 a month but we are paying over $100 a month for lousy customer service. read more

Waited a month for an appointment. I paid someone $100 to be at my home while I was at work to meet their super-wide appointment window (8 am to 12 pm). The technician comes out, takes a look -- and says that because of OSHA regulations, he can't go on the roof. (Which, btw, is reached via staircase and is entirely flat). So, as a result, no service. This is incredibly careless on DirecTV's part -- they could have asked me where the dish was going to be installed when I made the appointment, or better yet, they could have figured out that every other DirecTV dish in the building is on the roof as well. Very unhappy with the cancellation process. I had DirectTV for over a year. That worked good. But when the time comes to cancel services, the nightmare begins. Calling to get new or upgrade products are taken inmediately, but to cancel they direct to a different service and put you on hold forever (and there is no way to cancel online). I finally could cancel, but it took me 1 hour!! on the phone just waiting! 1 hour!!! shameful!! read more
