CUSTOMER SATISFACTION IS NOT A PRIORTY , DO NOT RECOMMEND! We recently switched from AT&T to Common and immediately learned why their service is so inexpensive: because they have terrible customer support! When I called to order the service for the installation, they were very responsive and came within a few days. Although the technicians were friendly and knowledgeable, the location they picked for the router not only impacts the signal throughout the house but it is a major eye sore! Initially the field tech wanted to put it in the corner of house that was central and where the prior router was, but because of a big bush outside, he asked if it was okay to install it in another corner of house that I worried could be an issue for getting a signal upstairs. I took his advice and when he was done with install, I was very disappointed to see the equipment was bulky and the router was placed in a corner on top of a dining table chair with cords/cables everywhere! There was no where to hide the router without impacting the signal, so we immediately called the next day asking if we can have someone come out and move the equipment; my boyfriend went as far as to significantly trim the outside bush so they'd have easy access to the wall where the prior cables were installed. For an entire week, we called every day with no response and finally, I did a chat on their website (see attached) and was told it's their policy to not move equipment after it's been installed. I even asked if we can pay for them to come back (since the initial installation was free) and they still said no, but we are welcome to move the equipment ourselves! ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE! Then when it came to billing, I had a two month free service promotion I had to fight for and FYI, they will immediately charge your credit card after the install without even telling you they bill right away. So in the end, the level of customer service is pathetic, the quality of the internet is not much better than what we had with AT&T and this company needs to get their act together if they expect to compete with the larger companies. Wish me and my boyfriend luck, were going to get on our roof and move the cables ourselves since Common is too lazy to send their own staff to our home to do their job and fix their mess...hopefully we don't get hurt in the process! 02.25.20 UPDATE: Hello Philip, I appreciate the response but I think you're missing the point of my frustration with your company. When the installation was complete, what I signed off on was that the internet worked (and how we verified that was I logged into the Wi-Fi from my mobile as I stood next to the router, so of course it worked but we didn't test it in other areas of the house) and in the questionnaire, it was asked if the installation was tidy and although your field team didn't do a sloppy job, the location of the router was not ideal for maximizing the signal throughout the house and it was left on my dining table chair. Although I am going to receive the discount, the billing issue is that I was advised you need a credit card on file to hold my installation reservation but I should have been asked over the phone or via email if you have authorization to charge my card, and I did not give it to you. Finally what's most frustrating about this situation is that we offered to pay for Common to come back and move the router to a different location within the living room and even cleared our yard to give your field support team better access to the location he originally wanted to place the router and for your customer service rep to say it's not your policy to come back is ludicrous and shows me that having happy paying customers is not your goal. We strongly feel that our request is reasonable, especially since we've offered to pay for a new installation, but unless you (or someone from your company) can offer us a solution to the issue at hand (rather than just thank me for my patience), I don't see how we can continue to use you as our internet service provider, nor would we ever want to recommend you to our friends and neighbors. read more

I finally "pulled the plug" on Common Networks. The tech who took down the antenna and collected my equipment, Amari, turned out the be the same person who installed the antenna when i first started out. The techs and other staff are really the only reason why I didn't give below three stars in my reviews. In terms of actual internet performance, it was obviously not a good experience overall since I've discontinued my service. I think I was Common for nearly half a year and there really was only a span of about 4-5 weeks where I had trouble free service. Other than that, I have a long history of emails to the support department and terrible speed tests. There seems to be so many good recent reviews, so I don't really understand what happened. It's possible that our requirements are just a lot higher than what Common can provide or maybe our location was just unfortunate. Anyway, from my personal experience, it would take a lot for me to sign up again, such as 5G, but like the multi-Gig version that we keep reading about. Not one that requires an antenna and caps at 75-100mbps. Anyway, we're back with "you know who" and I have to say, pretty hassle free even though we're paying nearly 3X, but for our situation it's a requirement. My boyfriend and I had been with Comcast for a very long time and were spending more and more for internet that did not work if we went into the bedroom! When we heard of a local company with an affordable price we jumped on it. Set up was easy and they provided a great technician and you could text with questions if you had them. We have been with the company for a year and besides a few spotty times in the middle of the day, we have had really really strong service and continue to pay the same amount we signed up with. For the holidays the company wanted to thank us and provided us (and all their customers) a choice of a gift! We are in a strong service area and so that may be one of the reasons why we have few issues but I would recommend anyone to try them! What do you have to lose? I really want to like Common Networks but they have complete drops several times daily. I want to be fair and start with the good. When it works, it works great. Common has some of the best upload speeds around, and I'd regularly get more than 100mbps when only paying for 80. The reason why I had to switch to another ISP was that they cannot keep up a steady connection. It's a daily occurrence to be without internet connection for a few minutes several times. It's a weekly occurrence to be without internet connection for 10 minutes or more. It doesn't matter how good their speeds are if it always drops to 0. I've contacted the company about this several times and have always gotten a generic, corporate form in response. Nothing has been fixed, and lately they've just decided to no longer acknowledge or respond to inquiries about this. I want to do what I can to support local businesses, but their lack of reliability is getting in the way of my work and has caused my partner to miss school assignments. I wouldn't recommend Common to anyone who needs regular, reliable connection to the internet. read more

I am seeking a new ISP because they have fallen down on the job recently and quite frankly, haven't gotten back up. I woke up today to no internet, I called and there was no answer which is now the norm. I have had numerous internet outages recently and I haven't received any response to my inquiries as to why my internet is constantly buffering! Since I work from home, reliable internet is important as I'm sure it is for so many of us. I upgraded thinking that I needed more speed, access in order for this buffering at night and during the day to stop. It did not make a difference. What irritates me the most is the non-communication. No message that says "Hey we're down but working on it" when you call to find out what's going on. Friday October 30, 2020, Sadly Common Networks is discontinuing, stopping service in the Bay Farm area (Near Oakland Airport) of Alameda. Not sure if they are shutting down completely or it is in just this area. Have been an early adopter. Great service. Pricing was great. They did not nickel and dime you for additional equipment and services. Their price did not go up after a year, actually the price went down. They supply you with top notch equipment at no additional charge. The best thing about Common Networks service was the fast UPLOAD speed, usually faster than download. This was great for moving data, especially photos. Zoom seemed to work very well also. Recently they have been having some service issues, must have been an omen of bad things coming.... I can't believe I could love an ISP! I have been stuck with AT&T for years just waiting to switch ISP but didn't have any good options. I have been waiting for Common Networks to reach my area along Shoreline Drive. They finally contacted me in Nov 2019 to schedule an installation appointment. The equipment installation went smoothly and I was up and running the same day. Since that day, the internet at the house has run extremely smoothly. Email customer service responds within 24 hours. We have had no problems with connectivity and are delighted to have made the switch. The pricing is way better with Common than other providers. These guys are pitiful when it comes to customer response. Long story short, it took them more than 3 weeks to tell me that they couldn't give me the highest internet speed at my house even though they sent an explicit email saying that they could. Lots of long lag times between emails and they constantly said that they would respond in 1-2 business days. I always had to re-initiate the email chain after 5-10 days of no response. They also require you to submit your credit card to set up an appointment with them. DON'T DO IT! They clearly make promises that they can't fulfill. Just stick to whatever carrier you have currently. It's a lot better than getting the run-around with these guys. read more

Had my antenna installed last week. Installers were on time, friendly and got the job done in a very professional manner. Connection is great and passes all the tests in our household (streaming netflix and mlb.tv at the same time for example) and I've already unplugged my Xfinity connection. We live on Bay Farm in Alameda. The issue I have is that you can't log into the router and change the SSID or wifi password yourself. Common tech support can do that for you - but that means there's a corporate database outside your home with your router/network log in details. I'm sure Common is quite trustworthy and all that; but in an age of hacker incidents left and right, I like the idea that I'm the only one that knows my home network details. And moving away from Comcast/AT&T is part of a general desire to move away from any corporate vulnerabilities to my home network information. I switched from Comcast to common about 6 months ago. When it works it's great (~250mb down and ~150mb up) which for the price is awesome. However, in those 6 months I've had to have technicians out 3 times to fix the hardware because I completely lose connection. This can happen multiple times a day in quick succession, or a couple of times a day and last for a couple of hours at a time. Their customer service also isn't great. When I speak to people they are nice enough, however actually speaking to somebody is almost impossible. Then if you do get to speak to someone they don't follow up on calls in the time they would. Plus they don't look at any of your service history to see what problems you've had in the past, so end up asking you very basic questions like "have you tried resetting it". I was really excited to get common networks after seeing them advertised, especially with them being a local company, but the reliability is a real issue, as I work from home (even when not in quarantine) which makes my job almost impossible. read more

I have been with Common Networks for a few months. Everyone was very good from installation and follow up. Simple pricing. Internet download speed is as advertised. Here comes the but. In the few months I have been with them, there was one system wide issue and a couple of times when my specific address had lost internet connection. As I write this review, my internet was out from 10 pm for 9 hours and counting. Email and text to support has yet to be answered. Internet is like utilities. We rely on it to be working all the time. When it is not, we have to rearrange schedule especially for those of us who do a lot work from home. No. High lag and intense packet loss. I have recorded speed measurements of 1.5-95 mbps in one hour. Again, for movies... Great. For games, very poor. Well, I'm afraid I had to dump the little guy and return to the empire. I experienced the same thing as others have; downtime that was too frequent, combined with multiple phases of unkept troubleshooting promises. "I'm checking with my technical team and will get back to you next week!!" was their retort, over and over and over, always courteous but never making any progress towards a solution. Really the experience really was a three star experience but I SO WANT them to succeed that I can't bring myself to take it down to three. I would have preferred that they'd have left the beam bolted into my roof, and asked if they'd leave it, as I'd likely invite them back in the future once they'd improved service. They insisted on taking it away (bad) and so far their patch of the roof seems to have survived the rainy winter without fault (good). Was great when it worked...speeds over 150MBPS off the charts. A few outages, but not so bad. The problem came a couple of months after my installation when they contacted my building owner and wanted him to sign some service agreement. Apparently the agreement was completely one sided and allowed Common unlimited access to the roof and under the building at anytime for any reason, and they refused to work with my landlord to come to a more reasonable arrangement, so my owner told them to pack sand and remove all the equipment. TBH - it's a toss up vs the extra $25 per month for big conglomerate internet reliability, poor customer service and reduced speed from AT&T notwithstanding. read more

Common was good for a while and then they sold their Alameda operation to Monkeybrians and then the bottom dropped out. Since Monkeybrains took over, we have outages all the time. And you can NOT talk to a live person about your issues. I need a reliable internet service and Monkeybrains can't give it. My only option, unfortunately, is to go back to ComCast/Xfinity or AT&T. All of the five star reviews are more than six months old. It looks like they've gone down hill. The speeds are awful and the customer service doesn't exist. I live in the East End of Alameda and I've never ever experienced anything close to their advertised speed of 75Mbps. The best I've had is maybe 45Mbps down and 25Mbps up, but even that was very very rare. I've experienced intermittent outages and *very* slow speeds since installation (about three months), and the past two days have had either no service whatsoever or less than 5Mbps down and less than 1Mbps up. I teach and work from home a lot. My internet service cut out in the middle of a videoconference with a student the other day and since then, I haven't been able to send an email or log in to a website for grading students' papers. If I can't work I'd at least like to binge watch the new Sean Penn show on Hulu... but wait... That can't be done either. It's a disaster. I've spent the past two days working at Starbucks and calling around to see how quickly I can get another ISP. They also have hotspots around Alameda for Common customers, but those are not working this weekend either. Support is not responding at all. I've called, texted, and emailed over a dozen times in the past 48 hours and received absolutely no response other than the auto-reply email that assures us that they're "working on it." (They clearly knew that their service sucked when they created that message, huh) And to add insult to injury, Common Networks will automatically debit $50 from my bank account first thing Monday morning. Ugh. I wanted to like these guys. I wanted to support a small group of entrepreneurs, and I wanted to resist Comcast/AT&T, but it's just not worth it. They're no less expensive than AT&T, and their speeds are at best half as fast--but only half of the time. The other half the time, their service doesn't work at all. It looks like AT&T wins after all. UPDATE 9/17/18: Common replied to my messages, 72 hours after I first reported problems, with a message saying that they've refunded me the entire $50, and they "will have the matter resolved promptly." I don't know what their definition of "promptly" is, because the problems persist. I get slow internet service for about 20 minutes at a time, and then it cuts out completely for an hour or so. I really think these guys are going out of business very soon... UPDATE 10/12/2018: An important thing to consider when looking for a RESIDENTIAL internet service provider: Do they actually have any customer support during the hours that you plan to access the internet? I would guess that the vast majority of residential users are using their internet service on weekends and after 5PM on weekdays. So keep in mind that Common only answers email (or phone calls or texts) Monday-Friday between the hours of 9AM and 5PM. What a nightmare that was for me. As far as I can tell, they haven't "expanded" their support hours. (And when you call, the recording doesn't even tell you what those hours are.)7 We have very few choices in Alameda. When I first moved here I tried Comcast (speeds are as bad as Common but customer support is better, believe it or not), and then I used Sonic for a good two years (speeds and support are good but they charge an arm and a leg to use AT&T equipment and lines). I then gave Common a try for four months, and it was BY FAR the worst experience yet. After that, there was only one option left, so I had to bite the bullet. I've had AT&T for two weeks now, and I've experienced no problems whatsoever. Also, I only pay $40/month ($10/mo less than what Common charges), and the speeds I've been getting are more than twice as fast as the best speed that I ever experienced with Common. The downsides with AT&T are 1) there's a contract, 2) I'll have to remember to try to get another "deal" when my contract runs out in a year, and 3) it's AT&T. However, the time that is NOT wasted on struggling to maintain a connection, driving around looking for a Starbucks that's open late, or sending angry emails, texts, and voicemail messages to "support" is now being spent on more productive things like work and the occasional movie. read more

Since we've been using Common we've had two incidents where our service degraded. In each case they were out here within a few hours, re-oriented the antennas (in one case they added a new one) and we were back up to 75Mbps. We live on the East End of Alameda and signed up for service at the beginning of September. From day one, we have not had a reliable service. We have experienced a number of weekly outages and low speeds. We have reached out to support and we get a similar responses each time: We are looking into it or making upgrades to our network (9/12). This afternoon into the evening has been the worst. We have experienced a number of outages and when it does come up the speeds have been as low as 4 kilobits/sec. We reached out to support, but communication stopped after a few emails. We really want to support a local business and not a large corporation (we dropped cable to make the switch). We have been hoping that service would improve after this week's visit by a technician to adjust the antenna, but we still face an unreliable service. When we first got it, we'd have reduced service during storms as some other reviewers have mentioned, but it's much more robust now and feels rock solid. An incredible contrast with Comcast and other broadband providers. - The price recently went *down* for the same amount of bandwidth. That never happens! Since I moved to Alameda and called it home, I've been trapped under the thumb of the usual suspects of internet service providers. So I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am with having not just a local option, but a GREAT one. The installation was smooth, with my installer answering any questions I had with a smile. There's been two nights where the 'net was a lot slower than normal, and while that was a bummer, what I absolutely LOVED was the incredibly QUICK & PERSONAL customer service experience I had. The CS people respond quickly, letting me know that they're aware and that they're working to resolve, PLUS they don't just fix the problem, they tell me HOW they addressed the problem and that they are continually working to improve the reliability of their wireless service. Updating my review since Monkeybrains took over Common.net for San Leandro and Oakland. To my surprise, service has been much better. No more outages on a daily basis. I have seriously thought of cancelling after the last painful multi-day outage when Monkeybrains worked through a backlog of customers after acquiring Common.net but since then it has been generally reliable. Although there has been a couple long outages (one was because of bad weather) both were resolved hours after submitting support tickets and leaving them voicemails. I do have to say that when outages do happen don't expect to have anyone that you can talk to immediately because I have not gotten any replies from submitting tickets nor have someone pick up on their phone line. They did call me back after the problems were resolved but normally you'd want to talk to a real person immediately during an outage and not hours or days after. Still it was good for them to reach out. As for speed it's generally not too far off of my expected speed (80mbps). Although occasionally it can drop down to less than half that (~25mbps) especially during work hours since many of us are working from home nowadays. I do wish they have readily available people you can talk to when their customers are having issues. If you're considering them do remember that service may be impacted by bad weather like strong winds since it's over-the-air. Still, I'm hopeful that their service will become better over time because I really want to support them as a local ISP. read more

We switched to Common Networks, the "little internet company that could," and I'm so happy we did! Awesome price: $50 a month is unbeatable. Even after subscribing to YouTube TV to replace cable channels and features, we instantly saved over $100 A MONTH off our Comcast bill. (Our internet feed was more reliable and consistent, too.) Speed: Initially, we were getting about 50 Mbps up and down, which functionally was enough for our family of 4, but Common wasn't satisfied with that (they advertise 75 Mbps up and down). Which brings me to Commons' level of service... Service: Excellent and very personal. I can contact Clint whenever I need to. He and the Common team have stayed on our speed and connectivity, performing periodic checks and making adjustments to keep our speeds optimized. When they were upgrading their network a few months ago, there were a couple days where service was spotty for certain customers. Without prompting, the president of the company sent an email and credited us for a free month. Wow. Now we are quite consistently over 100 Mbps up and down. So glad to stop paying the big corporatocracy for our internet, and enjoy a more reliable, personal, local and low-priced service. read more
