I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE my DirecTV. Don't let anyone fool you. Comcast is SHIT! DirecTV is THE SHIT! Let me give you a rundown of what I have, and why I love it. We have a 47" LCD so we had to get the HD package and I was going to the gym most evenings so I had to get the DVR to record my fav shows (top chef, ultimate fighter etc...). We have the premium package which gives you all of the movie channels HBO, SkinMax, Starz, SHow, etc.., Plus you get great channels and not alot of fluff crap that you get from Comcast like 25 Public access channels or the Filipino channel (sorry my pinoy bredren, but this channel is not necessary) , and you get a good sports package and music channels. Plus the guide screen is extremely user friendly, and big so you get like 8 channels on 1 page. and all of this wonderful programming for only $99. Shitty Comcast only gives you their crap 100+ channels and HBO and Starz (fucking Starz) for $99 you have top pay xtra for HD and DVR and Sports , and everything else those fuckers try to swindle you out of. Its a damn shame!!! and you know whats a bigger shame... I have to make the switch. That's right I have to leave my beloved Directv becuase my new landlord will not let me install a satelite on her house. Not even on the roof, and absolutely no drilling on the outside of the house. Me likey the Directv. I've been a subscriber for 8 years and I would never go back to cable. The picture is terrific and there's never any worry about the cable going out. One of these days I'm going to get a high definition TV and upgrade to their high definition service. I've also got TIVO with my service and I don't know how I ever lived without it before. WORST customer service I have ever encountered. I have had to call their customer service more than 7 times for various reasons. Some of which are: - Did not bring correct equipment for installation - Showed up after the 4hr window for installation - Did not take charges off my bill - Still have not taken charges off my bill and claim there NO NOTES on file from the last time I spoke to someone The amount of hours I have logged on the phone with Directv trying to get an issue resolved FAR OUTWEIGHT any extra tv channels they could ever provide. I was shopping at Sam's Club in Santa Fe, NM when a young man approached me asking, "What's your current cable service?" I replied, "What are you selling?" He said, "I asked you first." This exchange was repeated until the man realized he wasn't going to make a sale. As he turned to walk away, He brushed me off in a very dismissive wave. He never did give me his name or the name of the company he represented. I got that from the Sam's Club manager. I wonder why this guy even went into sales. I tried to reach Direct TV customer service to report my experience but all I could do is push dozens of numbers that had nothing to do with my complaint. When I finally spoke with a human, he gave me a phone number that turned out to be AT&T! I am not interested in changing providers and, as result of this poor customer service, I won't consider Direct TV if I do consider a different service in the future. ATT has raised the rates once again. We were under contract for a set price for two years. Its been six months and we are getting billed a third more than quoted. I have attempted to close the account and was told it was being " converted " and couldn't be done at that time. I was promised a return phone call. It's been three days it hasn't happened. I went on line to my account to close it only to be referred to a phone number. After the having this service for the last "18 " years I have to say the service has gone. Calling in every 6 months to find out why they raised the prices again is getting old. I believe they should go back to doing "PHONE SERVICE ONLY" as the certainly don't have a clue what customer service is. read more

EDIT: I upped the rating to 3 stars because the service has become more stable, and PBS is now in HD, though AMC still isn't. Back when they had the TiVo boxes, I would have given them four or five stars, but their new HD boxes are *HORRIBLE*. 1) At least twice a week, the box spontaneously reboots. Sometimes, all saved programs are lost. DirecTV's response "the boxes are intended for time shifting, not storing programs." 2) This morning, some type of software update was pushed to the boxes and all of the HD boxes in the country froze up. Apparently, their quality control and software testing are nil. 3) 80% of the time, Dolby Digital sound doesn't work and sound is downsampled to plain Dolby Surround. DirecTV blames my audio receiver, but I never had this problem with cable or with any DVD's I've played in Dolby Digital. 4) There is no PBS HD and no AMC HD. I went with DirecTV instead of Cable for HD because I wanted the NFL Sunday Ticket, but the constant outages and reboots make the service completely unreliable. [Edit] The service is now considerably better, though the HD image often stutters and gets washed out. If it weren't for NFL Sunday Ticket I'd go with Comcast. UPDATED 8/9/12: They've made significant improvements. You can record in one room and watch in the other, and watch online. The service is much more stable and doesn't go out. AMC and PBS are now in HD. read more

I did my homework, cnet.com, consumerreports.org, etc, and found they all recommended Direct TV. So in January 2009 I switched from Comcast to Direct TV, initially trouble started as soon as the installer showed up, but really it started when I signed up on-line. The package I thought I was getting was in fact not the one that I wanted, I'll chalk that one up to user error (though I'm pretty savvy). Basically I wanted on-demand, the intaller told me I had the right box, but then found out I didn't have the right box. The next bump came when the installer tried to fire up the DTV. "It's the box," he said. So I waited for him to run around to get a new box , install it, and find out that it nearly had the same issue. By nearly I mean it took the second box 1-hour to get satellites and reception. So, it kinda worked. For the next 4-9 months we had spotty reception. I repeatedly called DTV customer service and ran through countless sporadically successful resets with the tech on the phone and was ultimately told that I would have to pay $50 for a tech to come out, or pay $5 for service insurance. I was also told that it was probably a minor adjustment, and not DTV equipment, and that I could take care of (not getting satellites message on the box). After months of frustration I acquiesced to paying for DTV's equipment insurance and scheduled a tech to come out. The tech found that we were missing an important piece of equipment, the power booster for the DTV box to get signals from the dish. When I called customer service they offered me 3-months of free Showtime. Gee, I watched one movie on Showtime in the 3-months I had it, due to the fact that there wasn't anything on it worth watching. So, here I am at the end of my 1st year in the 2 year contract, and my rates are about to double. To make things worse, I'm a cycling addict, Direct TV has dropped all cycling channels (2), so I'll miss this year's cycling coverage on the HD TV. I hear there's a possibility that they will offer one of the cycling channels for an extra fee later this year. I'm so done with Direct TV!! read more

I tried to have DirecTV installed in my home in SF, but apparently a satellite TV company can't go on roofs anymore(?!). The previous owner of my house had a DirecTV dish installed on the roof (great, out of the way location), but the technician refused to replace the old dish with a new one. Apparently policy changes after the merger with AT&T are to blame and now prohibit technicians from going on roofs with ANY sort of pitch. Mind you, I am all for safety, but it was laughable when I went up on my ever-so-slightly-pitched roof wearing flip flops in front of the technician ... but the conditions were "too dangerous" for his supervisor to allow him to attempt the job. The only option the company provided was to install the dish on the front (street side) of my house (and I guess leave the old dish and all the old wiring for me to remove). No thank you. This is particularly frustrating because the company provided no prior notice of any installation restrictions (aside from getting the landlord's permission ... but hey, I'm the owner). You would think that because they had fairly recently installed a dish on the house, this should be an easy job -- no new wiring, just a new dish and a box! Guess not. Since the technician wouldn't, I even offered to install the dish myself (in flip flops) -- but apparently that's not an option either. If their installation policies/parameters were clear ahead of time, I could have saved myself the trouble. Or, the company could just recognize that they install satellite dishes on roofs and use good judgment about which jobs are can be completed safely (e.g., in flip flops) and which too avoid. This is on top of the terrible customer service AT&T provided in scheduling a technician to install Uverse internet -- the rep didn't tell me there would be separate appointments for satellite and internet service, so I was surprised to find out several days later that my internet appointment was scheduled at a different (and inconvenient) time than my DirecTV appointment. When I called to reschedule, AT&T wouldn't rescheduled the Uverse appointment to same time as my DirecTV appointment (so I could avoid missing multiple days of work), and couldn't coordinate a single time with DirecTV (thanks to a lack of integration post-merger). Looks like the merger with AT&T was a terrible idea -- turned the company into a joke. Thanks for wasting my time. read more

I was a happy customer of DirecTV for 16 years. Then, A T & T acquired the company and everything turned to sh@t! There was frequent pixelation, annoying warnings about my available DVR space dropping below 10% and shows to be deleted. Last week I got a new roof on my house, which required the disconnection of my dish. When I called A T & T to have it remounted, they told me I'd have to wait five days. When DirecTV operated the company, appointments were usually scheduled within 24-36 hours. No pleading with their helpful staff mattered and I was fed up. I've switched to Dish Network, am saving over $100 per month and have superior equipment to that which DirecTV provided and am receiving excellent customer service. Good riddance. I recommend current DirecTV customers do the same. One star is more than generous! read more

I had Direct for 2 years and could not wait to cancel at the end of my contract. 1. This price doubled after 12 months. 2. The user interface is just terrible. 700+ channels and about 300 have nothing on at any one time as they are reserved for a particular sports team. You are supposed to be able to select favorites or block channels but the feature doesn't work. 3. I found out later the the installer pushed the insulation in my attic all over the place looking for the hookup. This ruined the insulation value and coat me money on heating and cooling until I fixed it. 4. Their commercials are totally stupid. Unusually change channels to avoid them. I would give 0 stars if I could. Their "Policy" is that tenants need to obtain permission from their landlord prior to installing a dish... but they don't do anything to confirm that the resident in a single family home is actually the owner - the question is asked ONLY if the address has a unit number. DirectTv has no interest in resolving this issue, and insists that the homeowner has to go in to an at&t store and NOTIFY the store that it is a rental house and no installations should be done without permission. Unprofessional, and based on the reviews, their service is pretty awful too. AVOID! read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE! Ever since ATT bought out Direct TV we have had nothing but issues. A simple "free" upgrade turned into days of me waiting around with NO one showing up. The call center kept saying someone is on their way but come to find out NO ONE was even in my area. Now we are trying to get our service moved to a different residence and they canceled our current service 1 week prior to our move. They are not able to reconnect it no matter how long we are on the phone, getting transferred with at least 4 departments per call. We are on our 3rd call today. We are CANCELLING all services with DirecTv. DONE WITH THEM!!! No one at the call center is held responsible for things that they say and the next call center person says something completely different. Super Frustrating! I was signed up with a promise of two years at $55 per month. After one year I get a letter saying unless I sign up for internet and/or phone service, my rate goes up by $46 per month. Nowhere did it say that when I signed up. I called and was passed around to six different representatives and supervisors, none of whom would budge. I wrote a letter and someone called me back and told me basically the same thing. I even had it in writing that it was two years at $55 per month. I could take them to court but it's just two much trouble. I'll just cancel my business with them. Horrible!!! read more

I've had DirecTV now for about 5 months. I guess that's a testimonial either to my patience, or my reluctance to get on the phone to disconnect my service. Why am I disconnecting? Why am I dissatisfied? Simply stated, the service doesn't work. The problem is that the service doesn't work: * When trying to play a movie from the beginning, it works for 5-10 minutes, then returns to "real time." So the play from beginning feature doesn't work. * When selecting a movie from the "on demand" feature, the service frequently says "service not available." * It frequently takes 5-10 minutes, and occasionally 20 minutes plus for a channel to play. The screen shows an error code while loading. As far as customer service goes, last night I called in to cancel my service. The rep couldn't help with eliminating my "contract early termination fee" and put me on hold to talk with her supervisor. After 40 minutes on hold, I called from a different phone only to find that customer service hours were over. Today I spoke with DirecTV for over an hour, and was advised that there's no way for me to have my contract early termination fees forgiven unless I approve to have my account reactivated, for which there's a $20 charge. Now I'm to understand that I'll be charged $99 in order to get a technician out to fix the bad service. What a racket. Word to the wise: AVOID DIRECTV!!! Worst experience ever. read more

I ordered the bundle for tv internet and home phone. Beware it's a bait and switch, they advertise no equipment fees and free installation. There is a monthly fee for more than one tv box. There is a one time installation fee for the internet hook up. They also contract out the internet and phone. Frontier communications, again what direct quoted was not what frontier charged. I had hoped with bundling,I would have only one bill. And silly me, one installation date. AT&T was here in two days for tv. Frontier with install internet and phone in about 3 weeks. Wanted to experience Direct TV. Signed up and was told FREE installation and equipment. Next day, the technician arrived. He smiled and told me while doing a survey of the apartment building, he can not do any drilling on the roof which is prohibited by the landlord. He could, however, help me by mounting the dish on a pad which cost $80.00. I immediately declined the service and requested reimbursement of my activation fee. It's disingenuous apparently, that they were trying to charge me for the installation by claiming the landlord prohibited drilling so they have to charge me 80 dollars for the special equipment. It's also disingenuous to say FREE install and equipment when they knew there are restrictions. Forget about Direct TV. I will stay with Comcast. read more

Then when you complain, they send technician to fix and charge you $100 even though they don't fix the problem and told you that there was no charge. Attention! Many of us are aware that ATT acquired direct tv. It's a bait and switch! I went with the direct tv offer via an ATT agent I spoke with in December and again this month and made the switch! The price included a Dvr,not! Cause once the drilling and installation was complete the installer's work order said no such thing. It was done on Tuesday so the same day I called and spoke with an agent in Alabama who told me also that was my deal and the Dvr would be sent out over night and I would receive it by Thursday, nope! Spoke with 6 agents today and they are adding another $15 to my bill! They are sending the equipment and I will receive it by Tuesday because the one I was supposed to receive Thursday was out of stock. Did I get notification of this? Hell no! I lose a few channels that we watch cause direct tv doesn't carry them! Didn't know that and I would have to pay a penalty to switch back to ATT. It wasn't my error! So they told me to piss off! I'm completely livid cause I can't do anything that I do as it currently stands so I'll watch Hulu,Netflix and YouTube till I can get the right equipment. I've got paper waits with a fee! Horrible customer service! Service guy arrived an hour before installation window and wouldn't wait. I scheduled an appointment for 12-4pm installation window. The installation guy arrived at 11am. He was rude and not accommodating to my inability to get to my house earlier than scheduled. He offered to stay thirty minutes but that was all he would do and he was headed to another job. Has only been trouble since ATT took it over. We currently have no service at all and have called the service dept twice in the last 24 hrs. Directv used to be great, now they are just expensive. I just dropped them after 15 years because their customer service has gone completely into the crapper since AT&T took over. They make you pay extra for everything and often have outages with major networks. They can't seem to negotiate a contract to save their lives, or my business, and are always in some spat with some network or other resulting in outages for their customers. They are complete boneheads. They don't credit their customers for these outages, nor do they communicate their incompetence.
