Bottom line, they spent a ton of money on this new facility, so don't expect anything to be affordable and for the upsells to be strong. In coming here for an initial cleaning and exam, I noticed a lot of differences from my usual Dallas dentist. One, they don't use a different polish on veneers than on regular teeth (which my previous dentist did). Two, the tech who worked on my teeth was rough, especially on the gum line around my veneer. And three, while the office design was nice, the technology they used for the cleaning was a bit old-school (dated). I'm just used to a practice that uses newer forms of cleaning and polishing procedure. As I was private pay, the total was $250+, which is highway robbery for a simple cleaning. I go every few months, so my teeth are almost always never a problem. I was in and out in 30-40 minutes. The cost didn't come anywhere near equating to the experience. Love this dentist! His office staff are super friendly and polite, made up of mostly older white women (duh, this is Alamo Heights). Everyone is plenty courteous, and with my old health insurance he was covered with a nonexistent co-pay: SCORE! I'm not sure which doctor is Dirk: this is a father and son operation, and it seemed when I last visited that the young (and good looking!) son was pretty much taking over the business. The dental assistants I've had here are always super friendly and chatty, and always sure to thoroughly explain anything they do or answer any dental hygiene questions you may have. Exam rooms are clean, machinery/tools all appear sterilized and new, though the lobby is misleadingly outdated. Wish this place was still covered under my insurance so I could go back for a cleaning, but alas I am tasked with finding a new dental office! read more

When I first heard about Dr. Dekoch, it was through my husband's work. They kept on saying "no frills" dentist. Although this didn't seem all that comforting to me, my husband said we should give him a call one day when I was having awful tooth pain. They had me in the office within one hour. They didn't ask what insurance I had, they didn't ask if I was a new patient. They just said, "Pain? Come." Of course, I knew they took my insurance, but they were more concerned with me first. When I arrived, I was slightly scared about the 1970's furniture that they have in the waiting room. Little knick knacks in the wall shelving made me feel like I was visiting a man older than my grandmother (who is 82). I was wrong. Very wrong. Dr. Dekoch (an Aggie Fan) was amazing. He gave me pain meds WHILE trying to find out what was wrong. They found I needed a root canal and soon, so he scheduled it for the next day. He gave me his cell phone number if the pain increased and I needed to contact him in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. What dentist does this? The total bill was a LOT less than I could imagine, a root canal and crown for about $300. I take my children there when I get a cleaning. I take my children there to get their cleanings. I would take everyone, but Diana (the nicest receptionist I have ever met) might seem like I am stalking a bit. No frills means real business model. Go Dr. D! You rock. read more

After reading through Yelp, and finding out that this guy was able to patch up Inda H.'s mouth after she had a tongue ring, I figured that this guy could do anything. I scheduled an appointment. I needed prophylaxis, which only sounds dirty, but it's not. Just a cleaning. Dr. Dekoch's staff was quite nice, friendly, and on-time. They did a fairly good job of cleaning my teeth. I wish they would've gotten a bit lower underneath the gum line though. They've been a great help with my teeth and Dr. Dekoch's manner is excellent, and he seems to be quite thorough. The rates were quite reasonable, and I felt at ease the whole time. I enjoy the fact that he's a baseball fan and has all kinds of baseball paraphernalia around the office. I'm giving this dental office 5 stars but they probably don't need any more good reviews. It's a popular, gorgeous & very convenient dental practice. Lots of parking. It's a warm and professional office. They treat children and adults so it's a lively place. It's refreshing to go to a dental office that isn't just serving adults. Two generations of dentists are working together. Endodontists and periodontists are in the building too so no need to go anywhere else for those services. Their equipment is truly state of the art. I got someone who never even shared her name, sped through the entire cleaning without speaking a word and actually appeared like she did not like her job. Sadly, after you pass the front desk, nothing appears or feels welcoming. The dentist isn't horrible, but also carries a non-caring, non-comforting, speedy presence and that has been consistent since I've been coming here. My husband and I have been a client of Dr Dirk for over 10yrs. We got lucky when my insurance assigned him to me as his office is located right on the edge of our neighborhood. We have been thru several insurance plans since then and again we have been lucky to have been able to keep him. He is a good honest fair man, doctor, and business owner. Top dentist in SA. Visiting the dentist is not something to look forward to but these folks make it almost fun. Carrie is the key person in this place. She follows up on pre-appointments, and you usually have her make a future visit schedule. She is also very persistent. We were traveling for three weeks in Arizona and Florida and neglected an appointment. When I arrived home there were about seven messages from Carrie each one more concerned. I finally spoke to her and told her how I appreciate her follow up. My favorite hygienist is Rebecca. She is efficient, does not inflict pain unnecessarily, and makes time pass quickly with her conversational skills. Dr. John is friendly and efficient and his dad Dirk is the most experienced and compassionate old school dentist around. Five years ago when we moved to Alamo Heights I used Yelp to find these folks. New in town, with no dental insurance - and with a rather restrictive budget - I had the misfortune to break a piece off of a previously-filled molar. When I mentioned this to my brother (who lived in SA for five or six years, but has lived elsewhere for close to a decade), he recommended Dr. Dekoch, saying he was very good and was an economical choice. I was thrilled to discover that Dr. Dekoch met those criteria, and is also a nice family man who's both informative and entertaining - a real plus for someone to whom you're going to play captive, mute audience for an unspecified interval! And his staff is just terrific - every single one of 'em - from Diana at the front desk to those lurking in the farthest recesses of the office! Aside from the fact that Dr. Dekoch actually remembered my brother, a couple of other things about his practice impressed me. First, Dr. Dekoch is a sensible and traditional professional who DOESN'T milk the cash cow du jour, cosmetic dentistry; and second, he actually asked whether I'd prefer a composite crown or a gold one...adding that a gold crown lasts considerably longer (and that anyone in the dentistry field wouldn't consider anything else). Learning that the difference in price was only $30, naturally I opted for gold....so now I have a shiny gold crown, for a very reasonable price, and the knowledge that gold trumps composite. I was a couple of years overdue for a cleaning and I had a filling fall out of my back left molar. I already knew that that back molar had to be extracted and I had new cavities to be filled. After reading a few Yelp and Google reviews and determining if they took my insurance, I booked an appointment. 1. Booking the appointment -- They had an appointment available for me at the time I wanted the next week. My back tooth wasn't hurting, so I felt I could wait. Besides, who's THAT excited to go to the Dentist? They told me to come in 15 minutes before my appointment time to fill out some forms. 2. Reception -- Got there 15 mins before my time. The ladies at the front desk were pleasant and helpful. I filled out some forms. Turned them in. Right at 1030, they called me for xrays. 3. XRays were cool -- their machine is fully digital. Xray tech knew what she was doing and pleasant. You see your teeth right there. I had to get more xrays after my cleaning. My insurance covered it. They shot more; pew pew. 4. Cleaning -- The hygenist was very nice. She was the hero of the day. I recently quit smoking so she had the daunting task of scraping all that buildup. She used a magnetostrictive ultrasonic scaler - a pik that vibrates so fast, it needs constant running water to cool it. She was very nice and I was very apologetic. She did a great job - my teeth didn't feel as sore afterwards. 5. Dentist -- Dr. DeKoch was awesome. He spoke clearly. We talked about the importance of 6 month visits. He determined that I will be needing 3 fillings (using the fancy digital xrays, he pinched-to-zoom to the areas so he can explain it better). He examined my busted molar he determined that it needed to be extracted as soon as possible. We scheduled the fillings the for a week later; after the molar extraction takes place. After the consult, he personally walked me over to the Oral Surgeon's office next door to schedule that extraction. He spoke highly of him and I couldn't be more confident in taking his reccomendation. 6. The return visit -- Dr. DeKoch used local anesthetic and drilled and filled 3 of my cavities. and fixed my chipped front tooth. It was great. Dr. DeKoch is a pro. The filling to fix the chip perfectly matched my tooth's color. We talked about a referral to orthodontics as part of a plan to pemanently fix my broken front teeth with crowns instead of "filling material". I have determined that Dr. DeKoch will be my permanent dentist as long as I live in San Antoinio. His front office staff is great, his hygenists/assistants are professional and pleasant. For those who complained about his "dated" facility, he's building his new office building (still in the 09) and will be ready to move soon. If he refers you to another dental specialist, he personally knows them and they have the same quality of work/work ethic he does. read more

I'm very disappointed. I've been going to see Dr. Dekoch's office for a few years now. When I first started visiting, I advised on all my family's records that any cavities should not have mercury. When my son got his first cavity, they put mercury filling in. I talked to the office and they switched it out. This year I took my family to get their regular check ups, then ended up paying the full bill because they never checked my insurance. I won't be visiting again. The office is beautiful and I do like the dentists, but since I don't have dental problems and only need periodic cleanings, the hygenist is the most important person in a dental practice for me. I did not like the first hygenist who cleaned my teeth in 2018. I scheduled my next appointment purposefully with a different hygenist. Next appointment went well. The next two cleanings were with the first hygenist even though I had requested anyone else but her. I won't name her, but she is really quite awful with the electronic scaler. This office doesn't have a prophy jet, so if you have braces or a permanent retainer this isn't the place for you. The hygenist was rude when I asked, she told me that her lady clients don't like the prophy jet because it's messy. I just want clean teeth. I now drive to Gruene Family Dental even though I live a few blocks from this practice. read more

Hands down best dental office! I have had my fair share of terrible dental experiences. Once I read the reviews about Dr. Dekoch's office, I had to try it out! I started coming to Dr. John DeKoch about 9 months ago and love him! He was so sweet and very patient. I had a cracked molar and he was able to do a minor filling on it. Every other dentist tried to tell me I needed a crown ($1200). The thing I love most about this office is the fact that the dentist genuinely care about their clientele. Yesterday I called to schedule another appointment for my yearly x-rays, and cleaning. I also was worried about another molar I thought might be cracking again. The office got me in within 2 hours. I am sure I got extremely lucky, but I was so nice to be able to head right over and be seen immediately. Krysta did my teeth cleaning (which I always hate) and she did so good. Very gentle and took she her time. Dr. John came in and chatted with me and said everything looked great and there was no need to do anything. Once again, most dentists I have seen would have found something wrong in order to charge me. I appreciate Dr. John's honesty and respect him as a professional. So a friend of my dad's recommended I go here when I was having some issues with my past dentist. So I picked up the phone and made the call. Now don't get me wrong, I don't hate going to the dentist or anything, in fact I actually like it, but say I did hate the whole process of going to the dentist, they absolutely made it as simple and as amazing as they possibly could. As soon as they picked up the phone it was an experience you don't get when calling any drs office. The day of my appointment I walked in and was treated like I was family and had been going there for my entire existence. I recently retired as a dental hygienist from Dr. DeKoch's office. Of course, after I retired, I needed dental work after years of not needing anything but cleanings. I have had to get a crown, a filling and an implant since I left. That covers most of the dental procedures . I have worked for several other dentists and what I really like about Dr. Dekoch is he does great work and doesn't take hours and hours to do it. My mouth gets really tired so I appreciate that. Also, in case you didn't know it, dental people can be nervous patients, too-sometimes even more so. ( We know the things that can go wrong). He and Cindy make his patients feel safe. Can we say...Extreme Makeover, Dentist Edition? I was lucky enough to find Dr.Dekoch while they were still located in the old office (pictured in some of the photos). I loved their service - all the staff were so nice, and I immediately felt I could trust them not to do any unnecessary work to my teeth. But let me tell you - they just moved a few minutes away into a brand new building and it is INCREDIBLE! Great parking, huge waiting room, kids play area, complimentary beverages, flat screens, and I'm pretty sure my dental chair was massaging me...?! And it all came with the same spectacular service! First off I'd like to say that I chose Dr. Dekoch because of the great reviews on Yelp! I'm currently unemployed and uninsured. I had a filling pop out months ago and dealt with it till I couldn't anymore. I called on a Friday and scheduled an appointment and the nice lady made me feel comfortable and gave me a quote that was reasonable. I couldn't believe that I was schedule for that following Monday. I've called Dentists offices before that have tried to schedule 2 months later! I get into the office and fill out a short patient form and then I was called back in less than 5 minutes. I thought that I was only going to get xrays and an exam. Wrong! Dr Dekoch went in their and got to work. I was out of their in about an hour and a half with a brand new filing. It was the best thing because I didn't have to worry about it. I just want to thank Dr. Dekoch and his wonderful staff so much. The only man I let touch my teeth. I've been a patient for well over 12 years I believe. I've never had an issue, but the one time he could have charged me for something other then a cleaning he did not. Chipped my tooth on my tongue ring (I was young) and he said as long as he could say I told you so he wouldn't charge me. I took the deal and have yet to pay for anything but a cleaning. His assistants are always polite and seem to stick around. I've seen the same faces for years...has to be a good sign. I've referred over 4 people to him and all have loved him. I went to see Dr. John Dekoch this morning for a checkup and because I have a crown that has been borthering me. He did the cleaning himself, which I thought was pretty awesome. They use a cavitron machine, which is not nearly as painful as a regular scraping tool. I have to have the crown extracted, and was pleasantly surprised when the person they referred me to was in the same shopping area. Nothing like a one stop shop! Overall, the experience was pretty great, considering I dread getting my teeth cleaned. I am looking forward to continued care at this facility. read more

I have lived all over the country, and been to many dentists. I have never had such a positive experience as the one I had at Dr DeKoch's office. June was the hygienist that cleaned my teeth. She was very conscious about making me comfortable. She answered many of my questions and told me exactly what she was doing as she was cleaning my teeth, which I really appreciated. I wasn't just sitting there wondering what would come next, etc. Dr Dirk Dekoch was just as friendly. He reviewed my x-rays and chart thoroughly, and asked me if I had any questions. I didn't have my insurance card on me and when I was checking out I was told it wasn't a problem and that their office would call to get all the information they need directly from the insurance company. I went here because the reviews were really good. I had my second visit today to get a bunch of fillings.... Everyone is really nice and they don't keep you waiting like a lot of other places. At least, I haven't had to wait more than a few minutes both visits. When I got my teeth cleaned the lady (Yolanda I think? After being with my dentist for around 20 years I recently moved to San Antonio needing a new dentist. I met with the staff, my hygienist was great, even dealt with an incompetent dental student/new hygienist. The student, she just needed to learn how to accept her mistakes. The hygienist was extremely patient with her and was nice to me making sure I was okay granted all the extra poking and prodding because the student couldn't keep up. But what is the real reason for my 1 star is Dr. Dekoch. As a new patient I was hoping to actually have attention and have a nice quick conversation But nope. He spent not even one minute examining my mouth, and left the room while still talking to me from the hall!? Then I requested to have my X-rays sent to my previous dentist for the suggested root canal (which I already knew about) and they said they'd email them, guess what my dentist never saw. Absolutely disappointed. Can't wait to see the reviews for the increase in prices due to their new building. Needless to say I canceled all my prescheduled appointments and will continue to drive 2 hours south to continue seeing my original dentist. He would have never done any of that to a new patient. So let me tell you about my Monday morning- First of all, I had already spent my entire weekend with a terrible toothache. I spent Sunday night looking through Yelp for a dentist nearby and the reviews on this practice made me call bright and early on Monday morning. I called and Diana was very concerned about me getting it looked at right away! This made me feel better already. Luckily there was a cancelation and Dr. John was able to see me. When she asked how long I would take, I said 20 (was more like 30, sorry!) but she knew who I was as soon as I walked in (I'm assuming from my disheveled self from rushing out the door) and checked me in. The assistant was quick to take me back and took a look at what was going on. We took x rays and Dr. John came in after. He listened to my dental history and took a look and gave me options on what the next steps would be. I came out of the chair, relieved and with one less tooth. My son was with me the entire time which made me nervous because he's 4, and this is the age of make or break dr visits. I seriously can't be more thankful that his first experience in a dentist's office was here. My son was literally in my face during the whole extraction and asking a lot of questions and making lots of 4 years old remarks and Dr John and his assistant answered every one of his questions enthusiastically and in a way he'd understand, and we all even laughed at a few of his comments. He's used this new found knowledge to tell his grandma and grandpa about brushing their teeth!) I have to make a trip to the orthodontist before coming back, but for the first time in my life, I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to the dentist! read more
