Dr DeKoch Sr is just great, the staff is friendly, very professional. I went there solely based on the reviews I had read here on Yelp and I couldn't be happier. I have been in the U.S. for a year now and I went to another dentist at first and hated it, the place didn't look clean, the staff was not nice and the dentist seemed bored. Dr DeKoch is truly what you'd call a real doctor, he knows what he is doing and after just being there just once I can say I trust him to work on my teeth (I have some superficial cavities and I want braces). I thought I would never find a good dentist like the one I have back home in Romania but it seems I was wrong. I was very disappointed on how the office staff handled a situation that could have been easily dealt with. I felt like they were rude and very condescending. I did not appreciate hearing them talking on the phone with my insurance company while sitting in a lobby with other people around, which is a violation of HIPAA. I did appreciate how wonderful and thorough his dental assistants were. Absolutely no complaints about them. I can see how many people believe Dr. Dekotch is a great dentist. On my first visit he was friendly and took care of my tooth problem right away. I am grateful for the service he provided for me. However, on my last visit when a problem was addressed I felt like he talked down to me. Despite any situation a patient/customer should never leave any establishment feeling worse than they came in. I felt like he did not care and turned the situation into be being upset I had to pay money. Needless to say, I will not be returning to Dr. Dekotch office. read more

My husband and I were patients of Dr. Dirk Dekoch and Dr. John Dekkoch for 6 years while we lived in San Antonio. I originally found them on Yelp and a bonus that they took my dental insurance. We have nothing but high praise for both of them - professional, trustworthy, caring and personable. I have had experiences in the past with dentists who have tried to "upsell" or tell me I needed to do certain work to achieve that textbook perfect mouth. You can trust the professional diagnosis of this practice. We've just moved to Florida now, and I am trying to find that same special dentist ~ not easy. Really miss this practice. They were very thorough in explaining the possible x-rays I could get for what price. John was very kind and professional, and so was the rest of the staff. The staff was friendly, scheduled my appointment on relatively short notice, and proactively setup my next visit. First of all let me start with my review and tell you that I think most of these reviews on yelp for this office are not accurate. I was given the chance to be "secret shopper" patient at this office. Upon arriving at the location, I walked into a very outdated office. There were two ladies at the desk. The lady to the left at the desk did not even look up as I had entered. The front desk lady on the right was the only one who looked up and acknowledged that I was standing there. I thought that this was a rather odd way to treat a patient. I was first seen by the dental assistant who took x-rays. She was very nice and gentle with her x-rays. Next I was moved to the elder Dikoch's room for treatment. The room was kind of dated. The assistant that he was using at the time had a terrible cough and was coughing all over the place. I was not pleased with this. And I had to request safety glasses which they didn't even know where they were. The last thing I want is sharp instruments to fall into my eye. The dentist came in, and proceeded to examine my issue that I was there for. I asked him several times to take a look at the rest of my mouth because I was there for an exam as well. Repeatedly he kept saying how he had to hurry because he had a plane to catch. I asked him three times to look at a few of my teeth that were bothering me. And his response was "i'll get to it". He proceeded to work on a couple of my teeth doing some cosmetic things and he was very rough. He tugged at my lips with his gloves, he pulled on the side of my cheek too hard with his mirror and I asked him several times to please be gentle. When he began to do some drilling I noticed that he did not use a water with his drill and then I could smell burning tooth. This is unacceptable as it is common practice and it is recommended to use water when you are drilling a part of the tooth as to not burn the pulp of the tooth. While he was in there working, I asked him again if he saw anything on a couple of other teeth in a different location. He said I'll have to take a look but I'm in a hurry I have a plane to catch. He kept working and only did half the job that he was supposed to do saying that he had to go he had his plane he had to catch again. I asked him if he had looked at the other teeth and he said no. He would have to do it at the next appointment. I told him that my tooth was a now very rough and that it was cutting my tongue needed to be smoothed out. He again said he had to leave because he had a plane to catch. Even though I was there for an exam as well, he didn't do one. I then went to the front with my paperwork and handed it to the front desk ladies. They told me that the bill for today for the exam in the dental work would be $$$. I informed the front desk lady that I would not be paying for an exam because an exam was not done and that the doctor never looked at all of my teeth let alone the teeth that were bothering me. He had only done just the cosmetic work. That was also unacceptable. The dentist should always treat the problem area first before moving onto cosmetic issues. To get a better picture of the dental office, I asked if the hygienist had any openings that day for a cleaning in which she did. So I waited for the hygienist and I went to her room for a cleaning. The hygienist room was dated as well. This was my first cleaning with this hygienist at this location. The dental hygienist did not do any extra oral or intra-oral cancer examination. The dental hygienist did not do any periodontal probing aside from sticking the probe in a couple places around A few teeth. Standard of care means that you should be assessing the patient's mouth at the first appointment by periodontal probing the whole mouth and doing this once a year after that. The hygienist did not do that. When she started to clean my teeth, she only used hand instruments. Which is not the standard of care anymore. This is an older school of training. The new standard of care is to use an ultrasonic Cavitron on patients and to hand scale afterwards. When I asked her to please use the Cavitron on my teeth, she kind of chuckled and said oh you like that? As though she disapproved of using it. I thought that this was really odd because that is the newer technology since 1980. She proceeded to clean my teeth and when it came time to do the fluoride she wanted to use the cheap foam Fluoride on my teeth. Foam fluoride does very little for your teeth. So I requested that she use varnish fluoride. She laughed at me again and said oh why would you want that,that's that's gross!! Varnish fluoride is the standard of care. It may cost a little bit more for the dentist but it does more for the patient. I would not recommend this office. Especially after taking a look from the other side of the spectrum. read more

As other yelpers i visited dr dekoch based solely on yelp reviews as I changed insurance providers and my old dentist was not on the preferred network list so here I went to search for a dentist and I always use yelp as a source and I am glad I did the reviews were good and I figured I would give it a try, the office located in Alamo Heights area seems it caters to older clientele like 60+ but they welcomed me with open arms receptionist were very courteous and the dental hygienist was very friendly and personalble, like a mommy figure ...her name was Judith, she took well care of me and was attentive during the whole cleaning procedure and kept me comfortable (even though getting your teeth clean if a bit nerve racking). She even noted some spots where she wanted the doc to look at just to make sure there were no worries. Well Dr Dirk came in so spunky and treated me like one of his own. Made a little small chat with me...what did I do, did I have braces in the past etc. Made me feel important :-) Well he checked my X-rays pointed out and actually showed me what I needed to look out for and how to care for my teeth and basically stated he would tell me exactly what he would tell his kids my age, there is no need to fill any cavities at this time as we will watch every 6 months and go from there..pretty straight forth no jargon on extra services like all of these other dentist that scam people out of money. It seems he operates a very down to earth humble establishment here and I really like that. The place is older not as hi-tech as others however I feel like you get good old fashion treatment here, and just make sure to keep doing what you do and do the basics: no sugary drinks/juices,brush,floss and rinse with a fluoride mouthwash...pretty easy peasy :p Yea because I was pretty pissed when Dr McDonald's office on San Pedro Ave/281 would not clean my teeth because supposedly I needed a scaling which costs about $700.00 and about $350.00 out of my own pocket...scam ya think? Judith scaled my teeth in the regular routine cleaning and I didn't get charged one cent...go figure and be careful when paying for unnecessary expensive procedures. I have been a patient of all three dentists- Dr. Dirk, Dr. John and Dr. Susie. They are the most kind, friendly and professional people you will ever meet. They truly care about their patients, and their work is excellent! Dr. Dirk cosmetically bonded my front tooth prior to my wedding. I was anxious about the tooth and the result, but he put me at ease with his excellent bedside manner, and the result was amazing. I couldn't be happier. Dr. John and Dr. Susie are also incredibly professional, kind, and excellent dentists. If you are looking for a general dentist in San Antonio, please look no further than Alamo Heights and the DeKoch family. Bigger than life personality, great dental care, friendly staff

VERY kind, friendly and personable. They worked with my five year old when other family dentist wouldn't. The reception staff was great and so are the dental assistants. Everyone that walked in was called by name as if they knew the patients. Every patient that walked in seemed happy to be there as if they were visiting a friend. I will be returning for my dental care, Even if it's out of my way. They go out of their way to treat you like a human and provide a good service. read more

Dr. John Dekoch is the best dentist ever, i have been to many dentists before but my experience in Dr. John Dekoch's office was exceptional. This dentist have a super nice personality, knows his stuff well and I felt very safe getting treatment from him. The office staff is exceptionally courteous and efficient. Great! I take my daughter here and she loves it. However the receptionist for the other dentist in the office (Darcie) is a jerk.

While I highly value the quality of care and honest business practice, it's the staff that give this office a solid 5 stars. Becka makes getting our teeth cleaned something to look forward to - she is professional, kind and caring. Diana at the front desk is polite, efficient and so sweet. Dr. DeKoch and his son John are both very professional and have an amazing bed side manner. They are honest in their diagnosis/treatment and reasonable in what they charge. Yes, there are cheaper places to go but you get what you pay for (I unfortunately know this from experience). I dreaded going to the dentist until I became a patient of Dr. DeKoch - my whole family has received excellent care since 2004. I doubt any other dental practice can offer the combination of integrity and compassion that you will find with Dr. DeKoch. read more

after having a bad experience with a well known, "Advanced" dental practice, I decided to search for a new dentist. W/ the help of my wife and Yelp, we found Dr. Dekoch. I have never been so impressed with a dental office's service. Every single representative (including Dr. Dekoch) was extremely helpful and as nice as can be. Dr. Dekoch was able to diagnose my problem and schedule me for a root canal the very next day. When my previous dental office wanted to charge me $25 to transfer my x-rays to his office, Dr. Dekoch said, "absolutely not!" He provided me with an x-ray free of charge so i didn't have to pay. After a smooth root canal Dr. Dekoch gave me honest, straight-talk on caring for my teeth better. At no point did I ever feel like he was looking to line his pockets with my hard earned money from "upsells." The prices for his services were very fair and affordable. After all was said and done, he gave me his cell phone number to call if I needed anything further; which I used later to advise that i had some pain in my tooth. He offered to meet me at 7:30 that night because I couldn't go back to see him the next day. I later called because the pain had subsided (I was grinding my teeth during a nap). Dr. Dekoch went as far as to tell me that he would meet me the next night if need be; he "just didn't want me in any pain." If you trust your dentist and feel as though he has your best interest in mind--congratulations! If not, give Dr. Dekoch a call, you owe it to yourself. read more

Dr. Dirk Dekoch is an amazing dentist and a very compassionate man. I was in the hospital with my 3 year old son as he received treatment for his cancer when I chipped a tooth. To say the least, time was not a luxury i had and I could not afford to let my tooth become a distraction to my sons treatment. I contacted my home dentist who referred me to Dr. Dekoch and they made all the arrangements for me. My experience was a true blessing and one I will not soon forget. Once I explained my situation to Dr. Dekoch he was very sympathetic and understanding and did his best to get me patched up and back to my son at the hospital. I was in and out in under 40 min. from checking in to walking out the door. I am excited to tell others about this practice because just like everyone else posts here the entire staff goes out of their way to make you feel comfortable, well its true and its no wonder there are so many great reviews for this office. God bless this practice and thank you Dr. Dekoch for expediting my stay so I could return to my son at the hospital. It was an absolute pleasure to get to meet you and your staff and I hope one day I can return the favor you have offered me on this day.
