Let me be clear - I haven't been to JVRA in years. But considering I spent every day of my summers there from age 4 until moving to college, it holds a special place in my heart. There's a main pool with a shallow end for kids, a regular lap area (6 lanes), and a deep end with a couple of 1m springboards. There's also a kiddie pool and a junior pool. There's a covered patio area for picnics and such. Sure the whole thing smells of chlorine, but the staff always took pride in maintaining the facilities. They also have tennis courts and offer lessons and clinics, but my strength was always in the water. My love for JVRA was solidified by my participation in summer swim team. At the time we were the city league champions for 4 or 5 years running. It helped that we had 2 swimmers who went on to become Olympians. I'm still proud when I talk to my parents each July and my mom tells me that they're league champions again (since 2005, according to the website). This pool really is family oriented. The life guards grow up through the swim team and then become the coaches. The 4th of July festivities are the best - particularly the bike parade, when every kid decorates his or her bike with red, white, and blue crepe paper. I will always think of JVRA whenever I smell chlorine and freshly laundered towels on a warm summer evening. #Yelp365 - 152/365

I have been a member of the Heart of the Valley YMCA since 2017, and it has been a wonderful…read moreexperience up until last week. I will say that I love the YMCA as a whole which is why this complaint is addressed to an indivudiual I am single mother of a 12 year old and for that reason I am currently on a scholarship at the YMCA. My daughter has been apart of the youth program since I started going and I must say I am truly disgusted at the experience that happened last week on 6/17. At 3 pm I received a call from Bradley Ruff who is over the summer program and the YMCA. When I answered the phone, he quickly stated to me "What time are you picking up your daughter" I replied is something wrong he then stated yes. He then proceeds to tell me that my child lied in regard to a sunscreen incident that took place the day prior. He stated to me that he took it upon himself to watch the camera and stated that she intentionally sprayed sunscreen in her eye. He then tells me that my child is disrespectful and she " walks the line" . I explained to him that I have had nothing, but good reports and I am not sure what he is talking about. I told him that I would address her in regard to the sunscreen incident he tells me that's not enough and she can't come back to the program. As I stated in the beginning of this complaint, I am a single mother and for him to make this decision that allowed me no time to find child care is completely disgusting to say the least. He even stated to me " we have worked with your daughter" as if he is doing me a favor and I should be grateful! Absolutely not! You are supposed to work with kids! That is your job! To make matter worst this past weekend my daughter was with my mother while she was pumping gas and on the other side was a white male counselor and my daughter saw him she quickly hid her face! She stated that he doesn't like her and yells at her! She also stated that he made her sit out for an entire 4 hours! The YMCA featured me on their page and highlighted that I was a single parent but yet kicked my daughter out of summer camp with no warning or time to find care?! I attended a TRX class at the Y and have been for the last two years which means I have spent a total of $1,080 alone for this class as a single parent! There was a incident two weeks ago where my daughter was in the gym with me, when we left out a rep at the front desk made it her business to ask my how old my daughter was ( mind you she was a few days from turning 12) she told me that she was not old enough to be in the fitness center. Well two weeks after that a white man and his son were in the gym and walked past the same rep that was at the front desk, yet she didn't say anything to them until I called it to her attention! There honestly needs to be some revaluating of the youth program , there are 16 year old working with 12 year old and it is obvious that they do not have the patience for a 12 year old! Brad also told me child to "get out of his office" and called her a liar! I will be cancelling my membership as well

It's easy to jump right in when the teacher is willing to explain what's going on. My son played in their t-ball league last spring. The coach was great at teaching a sport that most 4 and 5 year olds need help understanding. He stuck to the basics and was very positive. The childcare is okay. I feel very comfortable leaving my kids there.
