Dirty Franks is my favorite neighborhood/dive bar in the city. It's a true Philadelphia institution. A recent Philadelphia Inquirer article has definitely upped the popularity of this lowkey spot, so be prepared for a full house on the weekends. The space is small but mighty, adorned with local art and lots of fun quirky decorations. The bartenders are friendly and efficient, but remember to bring cash as this spot is cash only. A true no-frills spot. There's lot of seating, on a week night you'll have no problem grabbing a seat at the bar or a booth, but on the weekends they are packed open to close. read more

A true cash only dive bar that was really freaky with an age of 25 to enter. The name Dirty Franks is absolutely perfect for this abortion. It was more of a playful nostalgic environment rather than a place where I would eat, but for a quick strong cocktail or beer it was a fantastic hang out. There were several of us and the bar was slammed. Loved the Ms Pac-Man arcade game and the Godzilla pinball machine next to the dart board. The gender neutral bathroom was a disaster and loved it. The door had a posted sign as a warning, "One Urinal, One Toilet, One Lock". The walls and ceiling (yes ceiling) was plagued with colorful marker ink and stickers, basically graffiti. Was not sure if I was permitted to add to the decor, but I wanted too so badly. Surprisingly, the sink, urinal, and toilet was so clean that the white porcelain shined against the graffiti. The retro-inspired geometric pattern of white and black hexagons created an inviting tile floor. If you are visiting Philly, you gotta take a peek. Five stars for the wonderful, iconic dive bar that is Dirty Franks. It's everything you hope a dive bar will be. It's crowded, there is an interesting cast of characters inside and out, and most importantly it is cash only. The perfection of a cash only establishment in 2024 is not lost on me. I never have cash on me, but for a visit to Dirty Frank's, I definitely will. When I went to visit Philly, this spot was a non-negotiable on our night out itinerary. It's definitely a come as you are, no judgement, good time spot. I couldn't tell you what I drank, but truly it didn't matter. I was so happy to be in this space. Dirty Franks is a no frills, cash only, pet friendly, neighborhood dive bar. The TVs are so old they aren't even high def. At Dirty Franks you will get a friendly bartender and strong drinks. You will not get food. It is a nice spot to hang out with friends and have drinks, without the fanciness and prices of other cocktail bars in the city. But the cash only policy really sucks in this era in which most people don't even carry cash and you can pay at other places with your phone. read more

Dive Bar in the true sense of the word. Except they failed. Here's why: 1- At 1500 on a Friday afternoon when we crossed the threshold, the bathroom was immaculate. 2- The 2 sinks behind the bar were filled with smoking sudsy water in 1 and smoking hot water in the other. From our vantage point at the bar we watched every single glass being thoroughly cleaned and rinsed. Bartender showed true love and affection for the job at hand. But when it came to customer service she was curt and downright rude. All I said was Hello, Do you have a drink menu? She scowled at me and reluctantly passed a menu across the bar. My husband was ready to retreat but I insisted on staying. I had my first draft pumpkin beer of the season and enjoyed looking at the historic remains of a bar built in 1933. I've been to Dirty Frank's a few times over the years when not crowded. Shots and beer seem to be what most people order. I have usually gotten a beer but the past couple of times I ordered a Manhattan - again the place wasn't crowded. The same bartender fixed a good drink but gave me some attitude - she spent much of the time socializing with regulars. The last time she ignored me completely, socializing, walking past me and ignoring me. I got the message and left. My affinity for this dive bar's singularity cannot be overstated, and all of my interactions with this space have been truly magical. Franks will adapt to whatever kind of night and vibe you're looking to cultivate. For me, it's looked like a "ripped from a rom com" first date with my now-boyfriend at the bar, a debaucherous evening camped out at a booth with my out-of-town parents, and a few "let's stop by Franks before the function" kind of nights with friends. Whatever brings you in, it is likely you'll be walking out with good memories made (albeit a little worse for wear...the drinks are strong). Take some time to really take it all in! The art on the walls, the cut out snowflakes, and some Mummers history really help to set the scene. Prices are about as good as you're going to get in the city, and they do have all kinds of specials if you decide to take a look at their menu. I look forward to bringing my dog in to enjoy the magic of Franks with me at some point in the very near future, and appreciate that this community staple will always have such a special place in my heart and story. Dirty Franks is the King of Philly dive bars. It is always busy but somehow you can find a seat at the bar. The crowd and bartenders are friendly, drinks are well-made, and they have great specials ($2 Hamms!). Darts, a jukebox, and a game on tv. I have been obsessed with this bar since the second I laid eyes on it. Dirty Frank's is pet friendly, cash only, and has no sign outside. There is an awesome crowd of regulars that are friendly and love to talk to new people. Each visit is a different adventure. First timers should know that Dirty Frank's is a no frills, hardcore dive bar. There are paper snowflakes hanging from the ceiling, the walls are decorated with remnants of the bar's beautiful past. This is not the place for fancy cocktails or a food menu. I have seen people walk in with food from other places, and even order pizzas in. Every patron is welcomed to come as they are. I have been to Dirty Frank's after a gala in an evening gown, and I have come in pajamas on a snow day. There is no dress code or expectation for how you should show up. This place is a gem on 13th and Pine. My boyfriend and I went for our first date and will return as often as we can in an attempt to leave a mark on this amazing bar in the way it has made a mark on us. read more

Come on. You knew I'd love this place. I can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet. But it's a relic from a bygone era of pre-condo boom Philly, the Philly I dreamed of hanging out in when I was a kid, the Philly I could have hung out in during my 20s but I was spending too much time trying to be fancy instead of listening to my inner alcoholic. Bring cash, come in, take over the jukebox, and order a buncha drinks because this spot is good for all night. Come here for vibes and drinks. If you like cocktails, beer, and conversation, everything here is good. Only thing I can say is if sweet drinks make you want to die the next day, avoid their little shot and kid beer special. It's delicious for 5 minutes and then requires aspirin the next day. Or maybe I'm just getting old. At least the St. Joe's alumnae the other night thought I looked 25. How precious. read more

A bar that wears the term dive bar like a medal of honor and honestly, in my opinion, it should be a worn as such. A cash only, no frills type place. While I cannot believe certain places still won't take anything but cash, for them it works and they don't have to pay those credit fees for taking a credit card. We were looking for a dive bar to relax at after hopping a couple louder spots- found this place on yelp! We arrived to a bouncer and a puppy wearing a dirty Frank's T-shirt guarding the door, absolutely adorable!! We were asked to show ID and proof vaccination- a picture was enough! Nice to have the peace of mind that everyone around was also safe. Decor is very cute here with parasols over the bar, a few arcade games, a pile of books on one side and crafts like cut snowflakes and turkeys. Lots going on here to make for a comfy fun - almost holiday esque vibe. They also allowed dogs!! It was very cute, one was hanging out behind the bar, some on the bar - they were all very well behaved. And the drinks themselves were really cheap and good, cock tails were the most expensive for 7$! everything else was cheaper. They also sell little bag of chips for snacks. The barmaid was not friendly to my 2 friends and I upon entering right when she opened up at 1pm on a Saturday but she warmed up by the time she served us a 2nd round. I love this bar! Great bar, but unfortunately I had a sucky experience most recently. While waiting at the bar in Dirty Franks, the bartender Sarah, working alone and understandably overwhelmed, skipped over my friend and I repeatedly and then served a pair directly next to us that just walked into the bar. I say, excuse me, when you can, we're ready to order. I think those people just walked in. She responds "did you take the deli number at the door? No? Ok." And walks away. She then says "you made me forget their order!" And goes to the aforementioned couple and says loudly "can you tell me your order again? They were talking to me so i completely forgot it" pushing blame onto us, and further claiming her statements as a joke when called out for accountability. Now, I am witty and quick on my feet and made eloquent "jokes" of my own. How ever she may not have expected it and decided refuse to serve my friend and I as she continued speaking about the instance to every patron she could. Upon leaving, I spoke with Frank at the door, as I'm a regular, and said as much as I love this bar I'm going to have to review this experience with Sarah. He then assured me of the days she doesn't work to avoid this horrible experience repeating. I get it, it's a dive bar, but wrong is also wrong. DO come to dirty franks, I just don't recommend Mondays or Wednesdays. read more

Most dive bars we've found allow dogs inside so when we heard VICE news wrote Dirty Frank's is the best dive bar in Philly last year, it piqued our interest. Then when we found out they allow dogs inside, we knew it was a must-visit! Brie walked in and immediately found the doggie treat dispenser and water bowl at the entrance. There are also treats behind the bar, so ask the bartender. The mood almost feels yin/yang, light/dark. On the right, is dimly lit seating with cluttered and random decoration with bar and booth seating. The left is bright and clean displaying artwork for a fundraiser, also with bar and booth seating. Rose is the best bartender! She works her ass off and never gets flustered. She is patient and kind with her customers. Very sweet. Jen is great too. She hustles and gets the job done. DF's is lucky to have these two. I came here because I saw they serve Hamms cans. So surprised and happy they are only $2 per beer! And this bar happened to be 1block from my hotel. I saw the locals and regulars all three nights I came over. They were characters, friendly, kind, and fun. TouchTunes music app played songs all night. Thursday night was the quietest night, but stayed until 2:30 when they kicked us out after closing time. Fun times. Friday got jammed packed like sardines with early 20s crowd. Saturday was lighter crowd thank God. No food but nut snacks. They need to have a seasoned roasted walnut option. read more

CASH ONLY. Dirty Franks is the diviest of dives I've ever seen. So much so, it almost felt like a "That 70's Show" filming location: Darts and Pacman, random trinkets covered in dust, eclectic artwork (for sale; upwards of $4000....the irony). With all this being said, the beer is cheap and flowing and it's the perfect atmosphere to catch up with old friends and make new ones. This is exactly what happens when I visit Dirty Franks. We start with our group of three or four, and by the end of the night, we've got a large group of new friends playing Jenga and sharing life stories. It's poetic, really. Dirty Franks is nothing more than a classic dive. There was literally a dog sitting at one of the bar stools. While some may scoff, I found this to be part of the charm. It feels like a homey basement hangout, and it's the kind of place you could sit all night and sip beer. If you're even slightly high maintenance, which is completely reasonable, this place will not thrill you. It's a fun place, but I feel it appeals to a certain type of laidback crowd. It's a nice mix of old and young, and it's a close walk to other great bars in the neighborhood making it an ideal spot to start or end a night out. read more

I recently had the pleasure of going to Dirty Frank's, a Philadelphia treasure. Although I lived one block from there for 24 years I never ventured into the establishment. Recently however, I found myself close by and as a friend is a regular bartender there, I thought that I would finally go. To my surprise it is a warm, welcoming bar with the most friendly customers. The crowd was very diverse: laidback casually attired guys and women as well as the suits. My drink was amazing and it didn't take long before the men on either side of me struck up conversations.
