We met some friends at Dirty Franks, which was a solid dive bar. I haven't been to one since the first Covid shutdown, so it was really nice to feel somewhat back to normal. The majority of the customers were posted outside, but there were a few parties inside. There was only one bathroom in the entire establishment, but it was clean and patrons were considerate of their time. They had a big ol' digital jukebox inside, but they also had a pretty good playlist going for the outdoor area. The drink prices were pretty standard, and they carried some hard seltzer flavors I've never seen before. Their frosé is a must try. The frosé tasted like pink Starburst to me, which is the best flavor of Starburst if you ask me! It was absolutely delicious and easy to drink. read more

Probably my favorite real deal dive bar to hit up in the city, and not just because I get a kick out of seeing Frank Zappa, Ben Franklin, and a hot dog together on the mural. you can't go wrong with the prices, jukebox selection, and random cast of regulars. overall it might just be my favorite bar atmosphere in the city. it the perfect place to buy a pitcher amongst friends and challenge each other to a game of pinball. and it's one of the only bars I can think of that do out of no where sing alongs to the music playing. talk about fun! On some First Fridays my friends The Hydrogen Jukebox kick off a clown crawl here. they meet here and paint the face of whoever is interested. then they cross through the Fergie's area, and slowly but surely make their way into Old City. they start around Happy Hour time so you should come here and see if there are any clowns inside if your interested. read more

We thought this would have been the perfect dive bar...very nice bouncer checking the ids, dog laying on floor, crowded with patrons, crap everywhere something to look at at ever angle. Found an open seat at the bar. The prefect setup for a great experience until we met the bartender. Very rude lady. To state the obvious: Dirty Frank's is grimy and rough around the edges. But not in a disconcerting or uncomfortable way. It's probably one of my favorite dives in the city. Expect sub-par toilets, random dogs sitting on the bar, large groups of people, crappy beer, and cheap well drinks. You have to be in the right state of mind to enjoy this atmosphere. I've been here several times over the years now -- for lazy nights with friends, for birthday parties and to end nights out and about in the area. I give this place 0 stars. My friends and I walked in, ordered drinks and paid. We were hanging out at the bar. A man came up to us and asked me to get out of his chair. This man verbally assaulted me and my friends. The bouncer, bartenders and bystanders watched this all happed. I asked him to repeat himself and he did. I was walking out of the bar and the bouncer said "sorry he's a regular and that's just how he his". Clearly, the staff does not defend women. My friends and I left immediately. This bar is clearly sexist and I will NEVER come back here ever again in my entire life. I am really never this sensitive to sexism, but this was very apparent. I am a big fan of Philly, and would really love to come to this bar again, but I absolutely cannot. read more

I was here on an autumn sunday afternoon You could say this place is inviting from the outside, if you want. I would have to agree that the name "Dirty" Franks is appropriate based on the ambiance. It was the Sunday before Halloween which on this particular year was a Tuesday. Tons of santas and power rangers and dinosaurs roaming the streets. Immediately upon entering there was a large display of "scary shit" hanging from the ceiling over the bar. The decor in this bar is ubiquitously interesting. There is like this fish tank like structure encasing a bunch of asses sticking out of the wall. No joke. Whether or not this "scary shit" above the bar was a seasonal decoration is a mystery. We found a snug spot on the other side of the bar opposite the entrance. Bartender came over to us, provided our drinks pretty quickly and then harrassed us for the $10 we owed, which by the way, was a good price for a beer and a soco lime. Some dudes next to us got a kamikaze and miller high life which was actually a special on this particular occasion. $2.50. Holy shit are you fucking kidding me? After I finished my beverage it took quite a while for the bartender to return for more drinks. Quite a while. I was starting to get pretty impatient. Eventually I managed to flag her down but this was a perpetual issue and quite frustrating. Additionally this place is cash only. Annoying in 2017 but I guess for a dive bar you can do whatever the fuck you want. I'd come back for the drink prices bc i'm cheap af but it wouldn't be on the revisit list otherwise. read more

It's April and there's still paper snowflakes hanging from the ceiling, and art that doesn't really match on the wall. The bathrooms aren't as bad as people make it out to be, and the locks work. "DF Special" = $2.50 for a 7oz Rolling Rock and a Kamikaze shot. Pitchers ranged from $9.50 to around $17.50. There were dogs up on the barstools hanging out drinking from water bowls. Enjoyed my first visit to Dirty Franks! As noted, it's a great dive bar that is cash only! They've got a great decor of ornaments, photos, and writings that make this place a unique "historical" stop in the Philly area. They have a few off-the-menu specials that came per a recommendation from the doorman, so I would definitely suggest that you ask for tips if it's your first time! Most beers I had were between $3-$5, which is par for the course at this type of bar. It was pretty lively on a Friday evening before dinner, but we were able to snag a small booth close by the bar for our small party. Some friends and I headed to Dirty Frank's last Saturday afternoon. We were looking for a place where we could sit down, drink, talk, and hang out. We definitely found the perfect place. My only disappointment was that the booths were small- they only held 4- so we grabbed bar stools instead. I agree with the other reviews- this place isn't "dirty" as much as "worn". It's a hole in the wall in the very definition of the word. This place has elements that reminds me of all my past favorite dive bars. The bartender was fairly good looking, friendly (borderline flirty to all the girls), and simultaneously condescending- the mark of a great bartender that keeps 'em coming back. He (very fairly) gave someone in our group shit for ordering a girly shot and then sipping on it, but then I think he felt bad about it and brought her a free second shot later on. He was good about checking back in with us and getting us new beers and shots quickly. Everything was also fairly cheap. When we were heading out to a BYOB dinner, I bought two beers to go, which the bartender packaged up for me. There were also all these borderline creepy decorations/costumes above the bar that provided entertainment for a few minutes. I did use the bathroom and I don't remember it being as spectacularly bad as the other reviewers suggest. The jukebox made me laugh due to the unexpected song choices... they had "Kiss from a Rose" by Seal (yes, we definitely put that on and then sang along). Most of the song choices didn't seem to match the location or the patrons, but it amused us nonetheless. The other patrons were diverse- from annoying looking preppy people to borderline homeless-looking regulars who would get up and dance by themselves when certain songs came on the jukebox. One guy also had a dog. FYI: This place is also "bring your own food"- you can get whatever you want delivered here, or bring with you. They do sell some chips and combos and things like that, if you get hungry enough. And it's cash only. Two thumbs up- I'll definitely be back for some more day-drinking. read more

Dirty Frank's has a pretty good selection of beers, a couple ciders, and plenty of liquor. The staff is always cool and will definitely be up for conversation. The decor is quirky and funky - just as you'd expect for a dive bar. There is no sign outside, but it's the big door on the corner with metallic stars on it. There is no sign on the door with the name of the bar so when you reach the corner of 13th & Pine, glance over & judge the hipsters at Last Drop and then make a sharp turn into one of the most ridiculous bars you'll ever experience. Frank's is probably best known for its dingy but "charming" atmosphere, its strange and most importantly, its awesomely cheap "specials" and its eclectic crowd of (not-so) regulars. The special for you newbies, is a premixed kamikaze shot plus a Miller High Life or Rolling Rock pony (8 oz beer) for an astounding $2.50. Chew on that one, Bob & Barbara's. Aside from amusing oneself by checking out the strange amalgamation of people (and sometimes dogs), there is fun to be had with the solid jukebox, erotic photo hunt, weekly paper rock scissors tournaments (Tuesday nights?), darts, pinball, an old arcade game and quizzo (Monday nights?). Perhaps the best thing about Franks is that everyone talks to everyone else which is a rarity in this city. Stop in on a Saturday afternoon for a special and you'll be greeted warmly by the other patrons. You'll probably get a great story out of them, too. I would rate Dirty Frank's higher, but on principle I feel that no proper dive bar should be considered a five star venue. Oh, and a word to the wise, if you need a restroom opt for the one nearest Pine St by the dart board. Oh, you dirty boy! Yes, I admit it, I saw Frank's on Tony Bourdain's show and yes I refer to him as Tony! Not because we are familiar but because that is the brazen, devil may care attitude I take into all of my therapy sessions. I am so lonely!!! But enough about me, let's talk about my experiences. Dirty Frank's has all of the attributes I look for in a bar; local beer, pinatas and an organ grinder. You may find this hard to believe but it is difficult finding those things while on a business trip in Philadelphia. I know what you are thinking, "Adam, you can find that on any street corner in any ghetto in Mexico", and you would be right but the truth of the matter is that I don't give a damn what you think. Dirty Frank's hit me right in my wheelhouse and I stumbled out of there a better man for it. I even ran into some displaced Los Angelians who cradled a bag of fine Italian bread they intended to take home for a reminder of Philly. Predictably enough, they were in the film making business and were talking about a documentary they were filming. I asked them to document my middle finger as I walked outside to my cab. Dirty Frank's definitely lives up to it's name. It looks dirty as soon as you walk in, smells kind of suspicious and you instantly know, that you will have a great night! We came in to order the $2.50 Mini beer and a shot special. I didn't even know the shot was a kamakazee shot....I kind of didn't care....and I kind of ordered 4 more rounds. True to a dive bar atmosphere, it was easy to strike up a conversation with other people at the bar. We got to know two couples pretty well and took some gold schlogger shots (they don't serve Fireball - which is kind of odd). The music was off, I had no idea there was a jukebox until I went to the bathroom. They had on old xmas movies and it was pretty quiet for a Saturday afternoon. I would love to give the place 5 stars, but the bartender was so apathetic to everything that it was annoying. He served us and was not rude - just bored. I get that it was a slow Sat afternoon, but we were all getting a few rounds and would've stayed if he was just a little less....boring. I would definitely return simply to continue bar crawling in the area, hopefully the bored hipster bartender will have loosened his man bun on our next visit. read more

I guess I'm just over the fact that this place is known for being dirty. Great. A dirty dive. A proud dirty dive. I used to come here years ago and just recently got dragged here again for the first time in years. It looks exactly the same. Old ass tables. Old ass wooden benches. Old ass bar. Old ass bartenders...I think, I dunno I was already drunk when I got there. so I didn't drink any of the PBR pitchers offered me. (See I was being good lol) The only thing fun about this place, for me, was that I showed up in a floor length ballgown. Other than that, the place is only as fun as the people who you're there with. I don't drop in here as often as I used to when I lived right in the neighborhood, but whether you treat this as your neighborhood tavern or as a tourist "dive bar" destination, it still delivers a social experience that is unique and can't be overvalued. Although I suppose a true introvert - someone who wants to sit silently drinking at the bar, without any interaction with others - might get through an evening here, the reality is that a significant portion of the clientele are die-hard extroverts. Everyone at the bar seemed like regulars. The 2 bartenders were so sweet. Kept following up to make sure me and my friend was okay.
