Dirty Habit is located inside the Kimpton Hotel . . . which, let me tell ya, is so beautiful and artsy, I might stay there the next time I'm in DC. Anyway . . . I was looking for a nearby place to have lunch. I arrived after the breakfast service ended and about 10 minutes before the lunch service commenced . . . but my server (I'm assuming the bartender), Juper, was great! He sat me immediately and served me a cocktail and allowed me to peruse the menu while waiting for service to start. The restaurant is sleek, modern, yet with a 20's-30's Hollywood glam vibe. Open, low-lit (but not too low) . . . tables not too crowded. Loved the modern music, which wasn't played too loud. I had the place to myself for a good hours before lunch traffic started to pick up. For lunch, the menu included salads (roasted vegetable, gem), dishes like roasted potato bread, mushroom toast. They have a burger and chicken sandwich. They have a steak and eggs (also on their breakfast service), which I strongly considered. Lamb meatballs, duck sugo, mussels, lobster rolls. I had the salmon burger (ground salmon) served with crushed avocado, remoulade, and tomato, as well as fries. The fries were crispy and seasoned. The sandwich itself had greater flavor and I enjoyed it. I also had a few cocktails, including the For Your Eyes Only (Rey campero espadin joven, dolin blanc, centum herbis, guava orgeat), The Grapes of Wrath (whistlepig bourbon, thomcord grapes, fresh pineapple, sorrel), and the Mandarin Cobbler (Ron zacapa rum, malmsey madeira, mandarin oleo saccharum, bay leaf)--which wasn't sweet like you'd think. All drinks were complex and tasted great. Dinner service has a lot of the same dishes, but adds in things like corn custard with crab, rockfish, branzino, pan roasted salmon, Adobo cauliflower, steak frites. Great place . . . I might try to go back for dinner service before heading home. Update: I did try dinner service before heading home. Steak frites was great. Moist, tender steak, well seasoned and prepared. I tried the corn chowder with crab for something novel, and it wasn't my thing, but I could appreciate it. My server (the receipt only says D) was excellent. My husband and I went to Dirty Habit for Valentine's Day this year. I will say that the aesthetics and decor are very nice! I can see why people love it so much. The food, however, was decent/just okay. I am not sure if it was just a busy night or if the chef's were missing the TLC on each plate. The best plate was the Seared Scallops and fregola. It had a really unique flavor! My least favorite meal was the Salmon; the poached chayote and cauliflower made an unsightly and unpleasant liquid at the bottom of plate. Our waiters moved so quickly to keep up with the the crowd that they missed a couple things, but they were nice. I wouldn't go again for that price range, but it was a decent experience. read more

Then their highly rated (4.1 on Untapped) hazy IPA was out so I ended up with a very mediocre local IPA (3.55). It set the tone for the rest of the meal. Pro: Braised Lamb Shank was tasty and huge. Burrata appetizer with blue berries and walnuts on a focaccia was unique and tasty. My daughter said that her steak was good. Tropical sorbet dessert was tasty. Cons: Service was a bit spotty with our waitress disappearing into the other half of the restaurant. The aforementioned drink issue. Mostly it was the drinks that got the evening off to a bad start. Don't advertise your fancy Cherry Blossom drink during Cherry Blossom season and have your bartender not know what it is and serve something very different. I'm a little conflicted since it had such high points in cocktails and dinner - their halibut dish was divine, but the way they ran an event hosting was a bust. It is a beautiful venue tucked away inside Kimpton hotel, which has a very eclectic modern old meets new contemporary feel. I was a plus one to an event so the cocktails and horderves were comped, but I could not help wondering why they invited so many people to host with not enough bartenders and also leaving two wet and freshly painted metal tables directly in the way of bar out on the patio. A couple of people almost ran straight into it or set drinks on them before we were told they were "wet paint." Like why not move them before the event? The only negative about the service is that brunch (kitchen & bottomless drinks) end at 3. Book an earlier reservation to get the best value. The drinks were also pretty good and fairly strong. - Birria Shakshuka: 7/10 The potatoes were really good but the cilantro overpowered the Birria. This is a place that prides itself not only on the quality of the food in taste but also in presentation. One thing - they change the menu often enough that it's not worth looking ahead of time. I had picked out my meal before arriving, but had to change - as what I had selected was no longer available. I chose the Halibut crudo which came sitting in a bright, watermelon relish, with beautiful flowers, radishes, mustard seeds, and mini greens. The halibut pieces were cut so well. This was an appetizer but I had it as my entree because I can never finish an entree and my husband doesn't eat fish. For me, it was perfect. Also because we had the potato bread to start - with honey butter. Absolutely melt in the mouth, warm fresh bread! My husband had a stuffed chicken dish in mushroom sauce with asparagus. I can't find the name, since the menu changes often. It was perfectly balanced, well cooked, but this place isn't about liking a particular thing but trusting the chefs on creating some new flavors. That said, our host had the Steak Frites and that seems to stay on the menu. He selected the Truffle fries - which were yummy. And he was very happy with his steak. This review is strictly for NYE. My party and I did the 3 course meal followed by a 4 hour reception with small bites and open bar. Dinner was a 5-star experience with excellent food. The staff also deserve 5 stars. They were energetic, friendly, and attentive throughout the night. Where Dirty Habit fell short on NYE was the DJ duo and the timing of the passed small bites during the reception. The DJs honestly need to go back to DJ school or something. They had no feel for the crowd, were inconsistent, and kept playing songs that no one could dance to. The dance floor was dead for more than a few songs. When the dance floor first cleared out, they cranked up the volume instead of changing the music. Have you ever felt like your ears might bleed because the music is so loud? I can now say I have. It was painful. We had to walk away with our ears covered because it hurt. I mentioned it to an employee and the volume was turned down a notch, thank goodness. I could've done a better job myself. There are these things called the Internet and Spotify. Putting on a playlist would've been an upgrade from what we were getting. Several party goers requested songs/were seen trying to help the DJs out. My friend requested a well-known song (the Wobble), got a high five, aaaand then the song was never played. When you're paying $250+ per ticket, or far less, you expect music you can dance to. These DJs missed the mark. It was like someone pulled their tone deaf friends to step in at the last minute as a last resort for the night. I don't get it. They get one star. Maybe it was the age group (mostly older people) but the crowd really thinned out after midnight. Better music might've kept them longer. The passed bites were tasty but poorly timed. The savory bites were served from about 10pm-11pm, and then the dessert bites were passed from 11pm-12am. I wish the desserts had been at the standing station and the hot savory bites were passed until midnight instead. The savory stuff was what I craved after a few drinks. NYE here was a fun experience but I'm not looking to do it again because of the DJ. I don't know how they got hired. read more

So, I finally had a chance to visit Dirty Habit and it's literally one of my new favorite places. Everything was amazing. The decor and ambiance is beautiful. The lighting was perfect and I immediately took notice that everything was so thoughtfully put together. The staff was helpful and accommodating from start to finish. The food and drinks were sooooo good. I just suggest that if you have to use the restroom, it's a little journey from the restaurant so maybe go before ordering food, lol. (since it's in a hotel, you have to take the elevator up a floor and down a hall). Overall, it was so great that I will be back next week to try the dinner menu. Before I get into my review, it's important to recognize that yes, it is incredibly busy on that day and it was taken into consideration for this review. If you are planning on visiting for a holiday I strongly advise against it. We arrived around 5 minutes before our reservation time, and were told to wait in the lobby until our reservation was ready. We were not seated until 15 minutes after our scheduled time. After seated we could immediately sense the staff was being overworked and very unorganized. We were told that by our own waiter when we were rushed ordering and he said it would likely take a very long time due to how backed up the kitchen was. We ordered one each of the specialty drinks and ordered the fixed Valentine's Menu. We got the first couple courses, and when the main entree arrived, it was the wrong food. We kindly told the food runner that it was the wrong meal and we did not touch the food even when it was left at our table. When our waiter came back 5 minutes later to the table, we told them it was the wrong meal and they walked away with it for maybe 2 minutes and returned with the exact same plates for the table next to us (who also received their dessert before their entree). I have worked in multiple fine dining establishments and it is NOT normal to serve food that has already arrived and sat at another table for any amount of time. Our food eventually arrived and was as expected for the rest of the meal. Our waters were empty nearly the entire time. The server was not there for the majority of our visit and most of our food was delivered by food runners. It makes sense there is a built in 20% gratuity as I am sure many tables would not tip that much considering the service. TLDR: Don't come on a holiday. Mid service. Not worth the price. I went for an event at this location that was hosted on their patio area. It's a really nice set up where they have bar height, tables and lounging couch areas. It was a pretty hot day and one thing that I noticed is that they didn't have many areas that had shade so the sun was constantly beaming on you. It started to become unbearable and I actually ended up leaving the event early. However, the staff was really kind and the food came out fast. I got a tequila sunrise which was good, kind of sweet. I also got their chicken and waffles and that was delicious. The waffle with cooked to perfection. Chicken was crispy and they had a dipping sauce that went with it that was really good! Was super excited to try Dirty Habit. Booked a stay at Hotel Monaco and was able to get a Saturday night reservation. Our reservation was for 5pm in the "glass house". Learned when we were checking in that there are two sections of the restaurant... the "bird cage" and the "glass house". Both are beautiful, but the glass house is a bit brighter and open, and you can see the outdoor patio space. The bird cage is a bit more intimate and dimly lit. Everything was great about our initial experience. Our waitress was on top of her game and made us feel welcome. We started off with a few drinks and an order of the truffle fries. The fries and the dipping sauce were a solid 10! The sauce definitely has a bit of a kick. Unfortunately, the other dishes fell flat for me. I went with the oxtail appetizer and my friend ordered the lamb shank. The waitress explained the oxtail was off the bone, which I was totally fine with. What was disappointing for me was that it lacked salt. It was super underwhelming for me. Even hot sauce couldn't save it. I was only able to eat a small portion of the dish. The lamb shank was the same. Lacked salt. Although, the lamb was a bit more palatable. The lamb was cooked perfectly and was coming off the bone. The garbanzo beans and what seemed to be a curry sauce all came together, but the lack of salt really hurt the dish. I found this cool little spot tucked away in the Kimpton Hotel near the National Portrait Gallery while checking out their Christmas Market this last trip. While Dirty Habit has both indoor & outdoor, this Floridian decided to enjoy their indoor space with the 40 something degree weather! The indoor space was classy casual with a chic slightly industrial look. Service was pleasant and my waiter on point with his recommendations. Case in point, the Dulce de Leche on warm, fluffy bread with berries and creme was filling to the point I could have enjoyed it stand alone. It's a great dessert and a must have! As far as savory, the eggs were deliciously runny with a mildly salty slice of canadian bacon & hollandaise over the classic English muffin. The sauce could have been a little richer but no biggie. Adirondack red potatoes rounded out my carbs. These potatoes, pinkish on the inside and with a hint of hit, were a pleasantly original spin on an otherwise plain veggie. A classic Hemingway Daiquiri "hydrated" my dinner and their espresso martini was the perfect after brunch drink. I'm looking forward to my culinary habits leading me back here next trip! read more

The chicken was a FULL meal, really different from anything I've had - it was stuffed with gravy and surrounded by a light but tangy sauce. Interestingly plated as well. A prix fixe 4 course menu for $56 is a great deal, especially if you're looking for a nicer dining experience. We really enjoyed the griled tiger prawns, suya short rib, roasted honeynut squash, and creme caramel. I was very shocked I liked the roasted honeynut squash just because squash is not my favorite, but it had a nice smokey taste to it that brought great flavor to it. To drink, we got the strawberries & cream, booty call, mandarin cobbler, and old fashioned habits. My favorite part of the strawberries and cream was the cream on top but I wish the actual cocktail was sweeter. I can't put my finger on it but actually both the strawberries & cream and booty call were missing a little something that would have made them excellent drinks but not sure what I would have liked added (maybe a dash of simple syrup). Definitely a personal preference because I have a huge sweet tooth. We received great service from our waitress whose name is Parandis. I highly recommend requesting to sit in her section. As my boyfriend and I were driving up to DC on a Saturday, we were lucky to be able to secure a reservation at Dirty Habit for that evening. We had been to Dirty Habit before for drinks for a wedding reception but hadn't had a chance to enjoy the food. Luckily Open Table made it very easy for us to make last minute date night plans. We started out with a couple cocktails. My boyfriend got the Tease & Tingles, and I ordered the Flying Nimbus. The Tease & Tingles was unexpectedly presented in a very theatrical way. It was served inside of a lantern with string lights. It was a little on the sweet side with all the fruity components, but not a bad cocktail to just have one of. If there's an egg white cocktail on the menu, chances are I'm going to order it. I was a little hesitant when I saw there was passion fruit in it, but I still ended up going for it. I was pleasantly surprised that the passionfruit wasn't too pungent and it was overall a delightful cocktail. I appreciated the nod to Harry Potter, too.  Next we ordered an appetizer to share. After some deliberation we opted for the Dye-Aged Steak Tartare. I'm not sure I love it presented this way with the teff waffle on top. In my opinion, it makes it unnecessarily difficult to eat. However, the steak tartare was very nice and tender.  For our main entrees I ordered the duck and my boyfriend ordered the sea bass. We also shared some crispy brussel sprouts. The duck was cooked so perfectly. The meat was so tender and complimented well by the other sweet and salty components of the dish. I'm a big fan of olives, so I was very happy to have an abundance of them on the plate. The sauce that accompanied the sea bass had a kick to it. It was very similar to mole sauce. He enjoyed it thoroughly and cleaned his plate. We also enjoyed the brussel sprouts. They were just the right level of crispy. Don't GO starting any @dirtyhabitdc UNLESS you are into that sort of thing?! Few weeks ago, a foodie friend, Larry invited me to check out this restaurant that's been high on my DC Foodie To Do List. We got a taste of their new seasonal menu, here's what we ate and drank. Dirty Habits New Fall Menu Drinks Cotton Candy Grapes $9.00 -- white tea | vanilla (non alcoholic) Friends with Benefits (drink experience salty and sweet) The drinks were really good, the nonalcoholic drink taste like pure cotton candy grapes and was delicious. And the Friends with benefits was a wonderful treat with a salty snack and a punch of a sweet alcoholic drink. Sides Charred Broccolini $12 Sunchoke Bisque $22.00 lobster | brown butter | fines herbs | sunchoke chip The side were good but the bisque was phenomenally delicious. Mains Pan Roasted Salmon $35.00 cavolo nero | yassa pumpkin | charred onion jus Steak Frites $48.00 grilled 8 oz hanger steak | chimichurri | french fries Braised Oxtail $23.00 butter beans | scotch bonnet | pickled beech mushrooms Out of the mains, I really loved the salmon and the oxtail. The steak was decent but a little over salted. It was a very pleasant experience, with a classic ambiance. It was very close to a Capital One Arena and art museum, so it's perfect for a date or before a concert or sports event. read more
