Let me start by saying I definitely need to go back for a redo. First, my sister and I were standing outside looking confused trying to figure out which door to enter until someone finally came to let us know they opened at 5:00. Once we were seated, we didn't receive waters for a few minutes, and our server came to the table a little later than expected -- especially since we were the only ones on the first floor and among the first guests there at opening. It appeared that the owner (or maybe a manager) was standing at the bar speaking with the bartenders, and although we were seated right nearby, no one acknowledged us initially. I did ask to speak with a manager, but just as the woman in the green blazer said "one moment," our server walked up -- so there was no longer a need. Now, I will say this: our server was extremely nice and polite. She did a great job once she came over. The HH menu just didn't have many food options for me personally, so I opted for a mocktail, and we decided to grab food elsewhere. The drinks? A solid 5/5. No complaints there. The overall service at the start felt a bit unprepared, like they were still getting settled. That said, it might have been because we arrived right at opening on a Friday . I came here for brunch with friends on a Sunday. It surprisingly wasn't crowded, maybe because temperatures have begun to drop. A DJ set up during our time there and the DJ was pretty good. They have bottomless of course, which I think is $40. I got the vortex chicken sandwich and OH MY! That sandwich had to be amongst one of the best chicken sandwiches I ever had! The is the best happy hour experience that I've ever had. They had an extended happy hour, which worked out for us because we got there pretty late and we ordered at the bar and then moved to a table. The music was really good. The ambience was exactly how I wanted it..relaxed but classy and the food was really good. I ordered the bacon burger and the mac & cheese balls off of the happy hour menu and I very much enjoyed both of them. I will say that our waitress was a little bit inattentive. This is a newer location in DC, I popped into to check out after leaving dinner from a different location. The venue is clean cut and elegant, the windows are tinted out which makes it hard to tell if they're open or not but adds to the ambiance, black furniture and tables located throughout the first floor (it has multiple but that was the only floor open at the time). There's a decent sized bar with a couple tv's above. They were just opening at 6pm so their happy hour menu was available (runs from 6pm-9pm). It was a decent sized crowd but I was able to get a seat at the bar. The service was excellent overall and the bartender provided some good recommendations and crafted some high quality cocktails. The happy hour menu features about 6 different cocktail options ($9) and a few different small bites like cheese fries, shrimp basket, and crab spinach dip (prices ranging from $15-$21). I attempted to test out one of the desserts the brown butter rum cake and several of the cocktails: the blueberry lavender french 75, strawberry margarita, brown sugar espresso martini, and the pineapple crush. The rum cake was delicious, moist and the salted caramel ice cream was the perfect compliment. Out of all the beverages the martini was probably my favorite the brown sugar gave it a bit more sweetness than you'd find in a standard espresso martini but didn't make it overly potent. The French 75 was refreshing, the blueberry lavender seemed to pair well with the gin and champagne. The strawberry margarita was solid, well made and not as sweet as I had anticipated it might be from the ingredients. The pineapple crush was my least favorite but if you're into something super sweet that would be the go to. Overall cool experience I'll definitely have to return to try out the food menu. read more

New hot spot alert! This place is new so first, welcome to the DC food scene. It's a restaurant and lounge in one so guests can expect lively music, bars, and a fun dining atmosphere. The hostess was very welcoming upon arrival and our waitress, Awani, was good. I would recommend a few more training for staff, mainly as it relates to managing several tables. At times we waited for minor essentials such as water for the table and cutlery. This of course wasn't a big deal but provided that the restaurant wasn't packed, I'm not sure why some services felt so delayed. Drinks: meh, the sangria tasted like sugar. It was so sweet and lacked direction. I didn't enjoy it at all. Appetizers: for starters we tried the sweet potato cornbread which came topped with honey butter. This wasn't my favorite at all and mainly because the honey butter was extremely sticky and the cornbread crumbled easily and was hard at the bottom. I wasn't too sold on the flavor but understood the vision. Next, we had the king prawns and those were indeed delicious. Slightly overcooked but the flavors were there. Main dishes: Not pictured: Oxtail Gnocchi (my friend loved it) Pictured: Deep Fried Branzino (my friend thoroughly enjoyed but wish it came with sides. They only paired it with bland carrots) My dish: Berbere Spice Crab Cakes. These were DELICIOUS! And the side of Brussels sprouts and corn salsa made it even more delicious. Very hearty serving so expect to share or take home one of the crab cakes because they're huge. The seating wasn't balanced, especially if you're sitting on a couch to eat. This place gave stripper lounge with a 5 dollar budget and we'll include the 20 plus year old furniture. I reserved a table for 2 on 4/25/26 to celebrate my birthday here. I made the reservation for 8:30pm. We arrived at 8:29p and was promptly seated, right by the DJ. The server came and took our order for drinks and entrees. The drinks came to us at 8:55pm and the food came out at 9:10pm. At 9:07pm the security staff started moving tables from the 2nd floor, where were seated and at 9:15pm we were presented with our bill. Although the server said take your time she circled back to our table at 9:20pm asking was the credit card in the check/ bill folder, explaining that they are getting ready for a party. If Vortex had a private event starting at 10p, the LAST reservation should be taken at 8pm, or before to allow at least a 2 hour dining experience. My husband paid the $160 + the gratuity that was already added for 2 people . At 9:39m we were ushered out of the door and I had barely finished eating and had to rush to down my drink "berene kiss". We had 29 minutes to eat and drink. I would have celebrated my birthday anywhere else if I knew this was the treatment we would've received. This was a big disappointment. The host or the server should have explained that they were closing early, before we ordered. My husband had the oxtail ragu and I had the jerk branzino. While he said it was tasty the portion was small for the price. I thoroughly enjoyed the branzino but would not return because of how we were mistreated and not appreciated as customers. I really wanted to love Vortex Lounge brunch but it was a 2/10 for me. The food had some hits, the crab cakes were the star, the mac was surprisingly good, and the shrimp only hit with the sauce. But the service was way too slow for a bottomless brunch. We had to ask for pitchers just to try to get our money worth, and my friend didn't get her food until the rest of the table were done eating. I had a really disappointing experience at Vortex Restaurant and Lounge. From the moment we arrived, things were off--it took 15 minutes just to be seated, which already set the tone. There was a large party of 20+ people on the third floor, and the host encouraged us to sit there, saying the vibe was better. However, we were never informed that the main dinner menu stops at a certain time on that floor. If that had been communicated upfront, we would have chosen to sit on the main floor or second floor so we could actually order from the full dinner menu. That's something that should absolutely be explained upon arrival so guests can decide whether to stay or leave before being seated. The customer service was extremely poor. Our waitress kept coming to take our order but would leave in the middle of it, forcing us to repeat ourselves multiple times. It felt disorganized, inattentive, and unprofessional. She seemed more focused on the large party than the rest of her tables. Regardless of party size, every guest should receive the same level of attention and service. It's also worth noting that aside from that large group, the restaurant was not busy at all. As for the food--it was mid at best. I had the jerk wings, and they were nothing special. Everything we ordered lacked flavor and didn't justify the price. For a party of three, a $90+ bill for wings, fries, and a shrimp basket (plus a service charge) is honestly unacceptable. I really wanted to enjoy my visit, but between the service and the food quality, it just wasn't a good experience. I wouldn't recommend and won't be returning. My sibling's friend put the reservation for under a random name so we had some trouble getting in the venue but once we sorted it out everything was great. My youngest sister celebrated her 18th birthday here yesterday. It was an amazing time. The staff were so accommodating (we were half an hour late), and made sure all our guests had food even though the kitchen was closing. The food was AMAZING as were the drink, our waitresss (I am so sorry I forgot her name) was amazing and took many many many pictures of us. They catered to my requests and provided recommendations. Unfortunately, it took a long time to get my food from the kitchen. There were other patrons who ate before me, and I was serviced before them. Everyone was very apologetic because I did complain. While waiting, I had the mango mocktail drink and later the espresso martini mocktail as well. It was very good. The food was actually very good too. I had the chicken and French Toast and the jerk potatoes. My one major complaint was the ambiance. Looking up and seeing the actual Vortex inside the restaurant was cool. Food: I ordered the mac & cheese. Visually gorgeous, with a golden-baked top that screamed comfort. Taste-wise, it was decent, though I wish it had a touch more salt to really bring the flavor home. One of my friends had the salad, which was fresh but missing avocado (despite it being printed on the menu). When she mentioned it, the server went back and forth with us, referencing the menu to the chef, who denied it was supposed to come with avocado. In the end, they brought out guac as a substitute. A little awkward, to be honest. A smoother resolution would've gone a long way. Drinks: I had the espresso martini, which had whiskey in it. It's a unique twist for me since I prefer Belvedere. I thought it would be strong, but it was more on the sweet side but still well-balanced. My friend ordered Dreams and Wishes and said it was really good. Dessert: Now let's talk about that rum cake... easily the star of the night. Soft, moist, and full of flavor. I skipped the ice cream, but my friend ate it for me and raved about it! Apparently, it's creamy and delicious! Service: Our server was sweet and personable, but the service overall was slow. She eventually mentioned the system was lagging, which delayed the orders. A heads-up would've been appreciated. We also had to ask for water, which should've been offered right away, especially with drink delays. We ended up speaking with the manager, who was kind and took one item off each of our checks, which I appreciated. Overall: 3.5/5 Beautiful vibe, decent food, amazing dessert, and cocktails worth a try, but the service and communication need some polishing. First off, I say that this is new and has a lot of potential overall was not a bad experience. With that said regarding what I had food wise was just okay considering the price. I ended up getting the 7 spiced chicken. The flavors and spices in the chicken were a bit underwhelming and seemingly not much different than baked chicken from much less expensive places. Also as a southerner $15 too for 2 pieces of sweet potato cornbread seemed ridiculously too much. Definitely cocktail-forward. Atmosphere: 5/10 We were seated on the first floor, which was fine (especially for my heels), but it lacked the IG-worthy aesthetic I was expecting -- seems like the second floor is the vibe you see online. Music was a highlight though -- I was vibing in my seat all night. Guests were dressed casually (think jeans and sneakers), so my birthday dress felt overdressed. Ideal for a chill date night, but not the place if you're looking to turn heads. Service: 10/10 Seated quickly, and our server was fantastic -- friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. Food came out in great timing, and everyone was pleasant throughout. Would I go back? Yes, for sure. Great food, great drinks, great service. Room to improve?
