The variety of ice creams (both dairy and non-dairy for those who are lactose intolerant like me) and the ability to sample them without pressure was great. There were approximately 15 people already ahead of us in line, so we waited our turn like everyone else. Around 9:58 PM, two employees came outside and announced that the two parties directly ahead of my daughter and me would be the last customers they would serve, and that everyone behind them needed to leave because they were "already closed." I understand it was close to 10:00 PM, and I completely respect that employees want to close on time after a busy holiday. However, the store was not technically closed yet, and there were no employees outside beforehand directing the line or letting customers know where the cutoff would be. Had someone been managing the line earlier, customers could have made an informed decision instead of standing there waiting. What upset me the most was what happened next. After my daughter, I, and several others walked away as instructed, the party directly behind us was allowed to remain in line and continue waiting. That was not the right move to make. If there was going to be a cutoff, it should have been applied fairly and consistently to everyone. Allowing people behind us to stay after telling us to leave made the situation feel unfair and left a very poor impression. This wasn't about missing out on ice cream it was about the lack of organization, communication, and fairness. As someone who has supported Handel's for years, I expected much better customer service. On a busy holiday like the Fourth of July, it's understandable that things get hectic, but that's exactly when clear communication and proper line management matter the most. If management has any questions about this review, I encourage you to review your security camera footage between 9:52 PM and 9:58 PM on the Fourth of July. It should verify exactly what occurred and how the line was handled. I sincerely hope this was an isolated incident, but I also hope management takes this as an opportunity to improve how closing procedures are communicated and enforced so future customers aren't put in the same situation.
