We used these guys to move several large bookcases, a heavy recliner, and other miscellaneous boxes recently. They were friendly, very professional and took great care of our items! They even helped us move a few extra things we hadn't put in the quote (because they work based on amount of time). Speaking of time, they weren't sluggish at all and were very quick! I was surprised they took apart our recliner to move it but it came back together just fine in our new place! This moving outfit called us to cancel our appointment an hour before our moving schedule. His excuse was we don't answer the phone and emails. But they know how to use Text to change our schedule, but somehow didn't know to use Text to ask us to confirm "again" our appointment? Yelp should remove them from hurting customers. Not only did they damage the stairs and landing in the house I just sold to someone by dropping a huge chest of drawers that had to be repaired for $450, but they offered a very small amount to the new owners to go towards putting carpet down on the damaged stairs and landing . The movers also made dents in the walls while moving things out! After unloading my furniture in my new home I noticed deep scratches on my antique coffee table, 2 corners of my leather recliner was damaged . I WOULD NO recommend DISCOUNT MOVERS EVER TO ANYONE! After the packing debacle we arranged with the owner(?) manager(?) to have the movers still come to move our furniture. They were prompt and super fast with moving everything. They did a great job getting all of our stuff where it belonged. I had called ahead to request wardrobe boxes, and apparently my husband didn't know that he needed to ask for them (I was at the new house) so we didn't get them while they were needed, but they did leave us a few. However they didn't leave the bar that goes in them, so they were essentially just massive boxes. We ended up paying $625 including tip for 2 mattresses, a couch, a bookcase, 2 chairs, 2 cube units and a dresser to be moved about 10 miles. I'm not sure if that's on par with local moving costs. I still wouldn't hire them again based on the experience with the packers, but all in all, the movers were easy to work with and were nice guys. Drayke was very nice and communicative. My only petty complaint is that everything we had was addressed to my husband, and everything was in his name - but he had literally nothing to do with any of it. I hired a two-man team to move me out of an apartment in San Diego (third floor, no elevator) up to an apartment in LA (with a pretty big walk from the freight elevator to the unit). I am disappointed in our move experience with Discount Movers. For our move,we had our own UHaul truck, but our building required movers, and Discount Movers was on their approved list, so we hired them to essentially load our truck. To start the morning, they showed up an hour after the scheduled time, high, smelling of weed with a pipe in their company truck. They continued to be unprofessional with frequent profanity, with one mover talking about being out until 3am and sleeping until his boss called to wake him up. I'm terms of moving, we had our stuff well packed in moving boxes and suitcase and we're told all our furniture would be wrapped, padded, and loaded. About half our furniture got wrapped, and the movers left half the bags of furniture pads that we got for the move unopened. They stacked everything on top of our one box clearly labeled fragile. Our dining room table was damaged because it was not wrapped or padded. I am grateful that we had our own UHaul truck because I would not have felt that our stuff was safe if it was moved by them in their truck, and I would not recommend them for moving. I have been updated that all employees in regards to our move have been terminated. Also, John and James (owners/supervisor/managers) were easy to contact and straightforward to deal with. Ashton, Kyle, and their teams were WONDERFUL. The only reason this is not a 5-star review is that both times, there were problems with the truck. The first time, I had to be rescheduled to the following day, and the second time the guys had to move all of my 2-bedroom apartment's worth of stuff from one truck to another. These young kids showed up 2 hours late, then took them another 30 minutes to get started. I requested 4 guys, they sent 3. I caught 1 of the guys out front of my building talking on his cell phone while I'm paying him to wrap and move my furniture. They damaged an expensive credenza because they didn't wrap it properly and were basically not careful. They argued with me about moving a $17,000 sofa, they wanted to shove it in an elevator that was too small. Anyone with an ounce of common sense could tell it wouldn't fit. I hate moving just as much as the next person, so I naturally was dreading finding movers for all my furniture. After reading the good reviews on yelp (and because they were cheaper than Priority Moving), I gave them a call and set up a time from 8-10am with two movers. I was a little uneasy when I called a few days before and they told me they had to move my time to 10-12pm (were they ever going to tell me this if I hadn't called??). The day-of, they were really late. They didn't end up coming until around 1pm which lucky for them I had a lot of cleaning to do at my old place, so I wasn't as bothered as I should have been. So after all that I bet you are wondering why I gave them 4 stars. Well, it turns out they had a really rough morning move with difficult customers which got them delayed, so they ended up throwing in an extra moving guy for me free of cost. That was excellent! They were really fast and got me moved out and moved in within a couple hours with no broken or scratched furniture. (I did notice that they left the truck unattended for brief periods of time and placed my wood dresser on the sidewalk without any padding or anything under it. Not a big deal for me since my dresser isn't that expensive and old, but something to keep in mind if you have expensive wood furniture pieces). We hired Discount Movers to move our family belongings about 40 miles to our new home. During the move one mover came across a dish holding some of my wife's jewelry. At our new home, unwrapping the dish we found my wife's diamond wedding ring missing, along with another diamond/ruby ring and a gold bracelet. My wife knew who packed the dish and when questioned the packer admitted wrapping the dish, said he recalled a watch in the dish, but just couldn't recall what else was in the dish. When we took the matter to Discount Movers they immediately denied any responsibility, and even seemed reluctant to follow the matter up with their employee. A company that tolerates thieving employees and is reluctant to even discuss the issue is a company anyone hires at their own risk. Buyer Beware! It says 'discount' for a reason. I recently moved from San Diego to Los Angeles. The quote was reasonable. I crossed my fingers. The movers showed up well over an hour late. Three young gents under the age of 25 and two of them were wearing sandals. I have no complaints about their work ethic. I did have to ask them to blanket wrap several pieces of furniture. I worried that table and dresser legs were not removed. I also worried that none of my possessions were being recorded on paper. No stickers. No proof that they were on the truck. In the end, I was missing $500 worth of bed pillows. The email I sent to them asking about my pillows was never returned. I'm thinking what proof do I have that I even had those pillows? None. You get what you pay for. And if it's too good to be true - it most likely is. read more

They were exceptionally quick. I'm an operations guy and like things to be really efficient, so am not easily impressed either, but they really seemed to move efficiently and not waste anytime. Took them (3 movers) like 2 hours maybe a little less to move a 2 bedroom apartment from 2nd story storage into the house and in all the proper rooms. Interesting note is that I was there observing and noticed that they kept on pushing each other to be efficient, move things quickly, and not take a break. It was almost as if I was in a gym and people were trying to push each other to lift more. Really impressed at the work ethic of the team. Only reason it is a 4 star is because there were some small issues being very careful were things got scratched. The gruff, short old fella who answered the phone could not have been less like the website experience. He spoke low and fast and was very hard to understand. My wife and I were moving out of our small 1 bedroom apartment downtown into our new place in North Park. The movers showed up right on time and ready to work. They moved all our stuff out of our old place and into our new place in 1.5 hours. Now, for those of you who see low star rating it's because they weren't prepared for the move. You must have everything packed up in boxes and follow the simple moving sheet that they provide. Don't overload the big boxes with heavy stuff and if your have expensive furniture you should take it upon yourself to move those items or thoroughly protect them with moving blankets and visqueen. This review is over one year late but I think it is necessary to insure others know what they are getting themselves into. I saw the great Yelp ratings, so gave Discount Movers a call to move me from Vista to Carmel Valley. I was specifically looking for a company that hooked up washer and dryers since some don't do so. John the manager told me his company does so, but on the day of the move he retracted this AFTER the move was in process and because his movers balked. Aside from that, the following problems also occurred: 1) A hot water hookup to the washer broke, and his guys could not find where the water turnoff valve was in the house. Spent over an hour trying to figure that out, on my dime, while water gushed out all over the garage. 2) A large piece of glass that protected the top of a dresser was mistakenly left at the house I was moving away from. 3) The movers did me a "favor" and agreed to hook up my washer and dryer at the new house. But they hooked up the hot water to the cold intake, and vice versa. They also did not hook up the dryer vent, so I had to call another company to fix this. 4) My two queen beds did not "feel" right upon laying on them. When I looked under the beds, both had parts missing that held the bedframes up. 5) I am not sure if the problems I encountered were specific to the moving team I was assigned, but it was a bad experience. I noticed that a couple days before the move, the team lead assigned to my move was changed, so maybe the "A" team was assigned to someone else and I was given the "F" team? read more

I really don't like to complain, but I felt this had to be done. I hired Discount Movers in May after reading several Yelp reviews and also had personal referrals from friends. Up until then I had always moved my stuff by myself and rented a U-Haul. They sent two movers, both worked very hard, and they worked through the entire 4-hour minimum. The move was a pretty simple one, 1 bedroom condo downtown to a 2 bedroom apartment about 1 mile away. I wasn't totally impressed with the move, boxes clearly labeled were stacked in the wrong place, a few kitchen items were broken, etc. But I thought that the guys worked hard and believed that they were pressed for time. And, this being my first "professional" moving experience I figured these kinds of things happen and overall I thought the move went pretty well. I tipped each mover $50. I didn't ,however, expect to have my 47" flat screen tv broken. What sucks is that the damage wasn't apparent until the tv was plugged in, so by the time I got it hooked up it was too late and the movers were long gone. When I turned the tv on, I just got a bluish screen with a huge gash in the top right hand side - obvious that something hit it...hard. Guessing it happened in the moving truck, as it was not wrapped like some of our other less- breakable belongings were. I checked the contract that my husband signed early that morning. Somewhere near the bottom of the contract it states (in tiny print) that their insurance company will cover .60 cents per pound for broken items. I thought, that can't be right. I didn't panic right away. I thought, of course they'll want to fix the problem. No, they will not and they did not. It was explained to me that they were not responsible for anything other than the .60 cents per pound the insurance company will cover and that is why they are able to charge less than other companies. So, in other words, "you get what you pay for". After several phone calls and emails back and forth with Jerry, the owner, they decided to send me a check for $180. That is not a typo. Yes, they felt that my two-year old 47" flat screen television was worth $180. I'm not sure what the logic was on their math equation, but they somehow figured that $60 (what the insurance co. will cover) times three is fair. So when the insurance claim comes in, if it is even filed, they will get that $60 paid to them. So, they really only paid me $120. I have not cashed the check. I wish I knew what to do from here. It just doesn't seem right. I feel like I got a huge slap in the face. If I knew how to post pictures I'd put some up of the broken tv, of Discount Movers' $180 check, and the email correspondence on here for you to see. Tips for future users of Discount Movers: 1. When asked to sign the moving contract the morning of the move, ask what the insurance coverage that you're signing for means and if you have the option to pay a bit more for additional coverage. This was not offered/explained to us. 2. If you have anything that you really don't want broken, or can't really afford to replace, move it yourself. Leave the heavier, less valuable items to the movers. read more

This is the first time I have ever had a bad experience with Discount Movers. My family and I have used Discount Movers for years exclusively and have always been happy about their service. This time when my husband and I moved, however, the head mover complained the entire time. He tried to convince us to deassemble and reassemble our bed ourselves to stay within the 4-hour required booking. He brought this up eight times during the move hoping we would change our mind. This was especially irritating because we had spent the last three days moving all of our things over and left only a few pieces of furniture for the company to take care of, so there was no way they could get anywhere close to 4 hours considering we were moving about 10 minutes away from our old place. Tellingly, the entire move and assembly took about 2 hours. He also made several complaints about my complex, saying it was difficult to move into. After he complained to the extent that I had the complex book them an entire elevator to themselves, he proceeded to say they didn't want to use it. He also brought up tipping them several times and even said they get 20% regularly for gratuity when he handed over the receipt. The only reason I tipped anything was because I didn't want to prevent the other mover from getting tipped, but normally I wouldn't have tipped anything after hearing his complaints and bad-mouthing other moving companies for two hours. Say, hypothetically, that your marriage has gone down in flames and you need to move your meager possessions from your tiny "divorcing man flat" into your now vacant and cavernous "family home". I picked discount movers based on the Yelp reviews. First impression was very good. The phone interview went well. The agent on the phone asked in depth questions to ascertain how much furniture I had to move. They were able to move me on my preferred date and time. we agreed on two movers working on a set hourly rate with a 4 hour minimum. Movers arrived at the back end of the promised window. (three movers showed instead of the agreed upon two( no extra charge). So far so good One thing that I did not realize, the movers only move. They do not pack. I had already packed 95% of my stuff just to expedite the process, but somehow I did not understand from my previous phone conversation that they would not even carry packing material. I still consider this my fault, but thought I should mention it so prospective customers ensure they ask for packing services when they call. The movers were friendly and professional. They did provide the promised hanging garment boxes. There were a couple of cons: -moving truck broke a sprinkler head when backing into my driveway (I didn't notice the break until the next morning when I awoke to a geyser pouring into my driveway. It was an easy fix. I just had to replace a broken section of pvc, but still inconvenient) -Secondly, I had a pub table that the movers had disassembled but it appears they did not use any tools to reassemble it because the legs were very wobbly and all had to be tightened. -I had to unpack the garment boxes immediately because they wanted them back. That was inconvenient because I was also trying to direct location of furniture. Also, it just seemed kind of low end. I understand that it is called Discount Movers for a reason, and that I probably should not have been surprised. It's a positive review, but I've had better and I've had worse. read more

I've moved a few times before, and it usually takes me and 5 friends about 6-8 hours to pack and unpack the Uhaul. It's a pain in the neck, you have to call in favors, and it costs a ton of money to rent the truck and feed everyone. This was a far superior experience. They moved my entire house, start to finish, in 2 hours. That includes drive time. The 3 guys they sent over ran at full speed the entire time, didn't break or drop anything, and were very polite. My only complaint was that a few boxes were left behind. They told us it was because of insurance requirements. I was annoyed at first, but then I saw that most the stuff they left behind was improperly packed (not taped shut or breakables in trash bags) or had objects that could damage other items (carpet cleaner filled with liquid and glass jars filled with sauces). Overall it was super cheap, and i would do it again in a heartbeat. Highly recommend! read more

Note: I had a very easy move. When I originally called to set up the appointment they guy over the phone basically said that they only move things that are boxed up and ready to go (No bagged items, "loose" items, no posters, no mirrors, no skateboard, snowboard...basically nothing that is not in for fit in a box). I was pretty disappointed but complied. I went out a bought a several boxes and boxed up all my things prior to the arrival of the movers. Morning of: Expected between 8-9, came at 8:15. Looks good so far. Two gentlemen kindly greeted me (Sorry forgot their names...John and ....Sean?) I signed some paperwork and they got to work. Like I said it was an easy move, I had everything in boxes and it was all in one room. They did not mess around got everything loaded in roughly a half an hour and were ready to go to my storage unit. They actually beat me to my storage location! (I went to get gas because I figure they would probably get stuck in traffic and/or waste time) I boxed up most of my things in storage and figured whatever they "refused" to take I would just take in my car. Maybe it was a bluff over the phone, or these movers were just super cool, but they took everything (including my snowboard, bike, mirrors, posters, trashbag of clothes). Even brought some extra boxes from the truck to help transfer the smaller or "loose" items. We loaded everything within 45 mins and they were on their way to LA. I was not on the other end to receive them, but they did arrive in a timely manner. My sister said they were kind during the entire move and everything went smoothly. Everything was put into an easily accessible garage so like it said, "Very Easy Move". 1 Star off: A moving service should not expect the customer to have everything packed in boxes and everything to be put into boxes in order to move it. It was also a bit weird how they always talked about getting tipped before the move, during the move, and when they are finished. They also expect you to have cash or money order, they do not take check/credit... My move was ~$900 bucks... kind of inconvenient to get that kind of money especially since they do not know the cost until they are finished... All in all a good move. Three hour minimum and the movers were rushing to be done within two hours. No shrink film wraps or blankets, won't move small items such as vacuum, microwave so good luck with those yourself. Luckily I'm only going to use the same furniture for another year. If you need to move fast and don't care about your belongings then maybe. If you have quality furniture and don't want them to be damaged then prob steer away. read more
