This is my second time using Discount Movers and once again I had a wonderful experience!!! The manager John was very helpful with scheduling my move and was able to accommodate me. The first time I used this company, I had 3 guys who were excellent and finished my move very efficiently and professionally. The second time was a much bigger and time consuming job as I had multiple stops to make. The guys I had were Jamal and Mike and they were FANTASTIC!! They were very courteous, polite and respectful and took extra care with handling my furniture. They moved quickly and did the job with a high level of competence. That is something I always find impossible with moving companies. There are some pretty bad companies out there and I have experienced very traumatic moves, but with Discount Movers, you will have a stress-free move and a very pleasant experience! This moving company was pretty awesome, with a few small hiccups that cost them a star. I moved from san diego to LA, starting in an apartment complex, then to a storage place, and finally to my new place. Since my storage place wouldn't open til 10, I had called to change the starting time from 8am to 9 since I had some boxes in the apartment but didn't want to wait too long at the storage place. What they didn't tell me is that they had told the two guys assigned to my job to take their time getting here, and forgot to call to tell me they were going to arrive later. Pretty harmless error, but it would have been nice to know that beforehand since they (Adam and Jason) didn't get to my apartment til 9:40. Granted, once they were here, they were done moving all my things out _very_ quickly. I was quite impressed. Then, they were very careful unpacking my mobile storage container, and secured it all in the truck in short order. I gave them instructions to my new place and Adam told me they'd probably be just a little bit behind me since they had to stop at the scales, but that he'd drive fast. I actually spent about 20 minutes doing a few other things before heading out myself, and didn't catch up with them until the scales. I arrived at the place after stopping for lunch, and literally, a few minutes later I heard the truck outside. The guys worked tirelessly in the LA heat to bring all my stuff in, and were very quickly finished. The hourly rate they quoted me was very reasonable, and were very clear about the 'double drive time' and fuel surcharges. The guys tried their hardest to beat the 6 hour estimate I had, though it did end up taking an extra half hour. Adam even asked me to check his math to make sure he did it correctly. Last few downsides, Adam was dripping sweat all over my coffee table and didn't make an attempt to clean it up, and they managed to pop the back tire tube of my bicycle. If I could give these guys a 0 star I would. The entire move would have gone better if it werent for 1 particular mover. They started the day early, had to beat fair traffic? So in any case they showed up to my apartment and one guy began rattling. Most of the thing we wanted moved were already boxed and ready to go. One of the movers walked in and started saying that "oh wow, you have a lot of stuff and i only brought a 16ft truck" ..hmmm, considering I told the person on the phone how much we had. Next while we were moving they asked how to get the couch out of the apartment and I told them that it goes through the hallway and out the door. They attempted several times but failed. I moved the couch into my apartment myself so I know it first. I told him that. Well after several minuted of bickering on his part I said well lets get it over the patio since we were on the 1st floor. That's when he went on to call me a LIAR about saying that I got the couch through the door?????? He got the couch over the railing but threw it down and laid it int the dirt!!! The other mover was polite and didnt give any lip or problems. The funny part is after all this mess and a broken vase that was given to my wife by her 90 year old grandmother was broken. The rude mover expected a high tip and was complaining all the way through the hallway. I was already asked by someone about recommendations for movers and I told them NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TO USE DISCOUNT MOVERS! This moving company is terrible! I called last week for a quote, and was told $309 for the move. I had to make sure that I could get the elevator reserved and the guy told me to call back early this week. When I called back I got another guy who told me $419. When I told him that was different from what I was told last week, and asked if he would honor the $309, he told me he was completely booked up then abruptly hung up the phone. I've used this company twice now for 2 big moves and I've had great experiences both times! The guys were always friendly and funny- which really helps put your mind at ease while you're moving. They asked the appropriate questions and even took things apart for me (my bed, etc.). Both times they were incredibly conscious about my desire to get the move done as quickly as possible because I'm young and unfortunately not made of money- and both times, the jobs were done very fast. I highly recommend this company to everyone who is moving in Southern California and I will definitely use them the next time I move :) p.s. I was absolutely shocked when the movers showed up. Apart from their appearance which I try not to judge a book by it;s cover...They walked through the house and then one of them asked me to step outside for a chat. He stated they did not think I was ready to move and they needed to re-schedule for possibly the next week or after that. I called the office and could not get through - the phones went to a hard recording. Before I could ask them anything else the trucks and guys were gone. I never received a call from their office. Later that day I called to speak with the manager and he was not all that interested in our situation. He stated he was trying to "save me Money" by re-scheduling. Just the thought of that is insane. We spoke about his choice and his reasoning and his ignorance was quite unique, however he did ask me to send him the pictures I took of the prep work we did when I told him I photographed the event. I'll let his council see them in discovery. One stop Movers in San Diego was able to send 4 well dressed, well spoken, much more capable men out to facilitate our move. Call One stop and leave Discount Movers in the dust. They did a 4 bedroom house and full garage in 6hrs. I tipped them almost 50% of the move cost. Roughest crew I had to-date! Two small appliances damaged, one small furniture broke, a chest bent, scratches and loose screws. Three hour minimum and the movers were rushing to be done within two hours. No shrink film wraps or blankets, won't move small items such as vacuum, microwave so good luck with those yourself. Luckily I'm only going to use the same furniture for another year. If you need to move fast and don't care about your belongings then maybe. If you have quality furniture and don't want them to be damaged then prob steer away. read more

Moving=Stress; Painful; Disorganized..Those are the thoughts I have when it comes to moving. We were looking for professional movers for a small but tricky job. It entailed going to pick up some furniture at warehouse, coming to my home to pick up more office furniture, THEN to our new office. It also required going to Santee, Del Mar and Sorrento Valley. I also had to change our moving date the day before because the office wasn't ready. Not one single hassle--I felt bad! John was amazing and reassured me it was no problem. Or maybe Jerry told me. Either one you deal with you will be very happy. The 3 gentlemen that took care of our move were EXTRA-ORDINARY! Extraordinary to say the least. Polite, professional, concerned with making sure nothing was dinged or nicked or bumped. We had this HUUUUUUGE desk that probably weighed 500 lb (or so) and didn't fit in the door. They figured out a way to get it to us weighing all our options. If that didn't work, they would have taken the desk back to our home and put it back. IF IF IF you have ANY doubt about movers and/or moving--do NOT hesitate to use Discount Movers for anything!! They were SOOO reasonable for the move they made for us. It wasn't a lot of furniture, like moving a home, but quite a bit of stuff. The cost was even less then what was quoted as an estimate and as I said--the gentlemen were courteous and respectful of the other offices knowing they were all working. Thanks Discount Movers!! Two guys moved my things in 4 hours. They broke a couple dishes and a vase but did a good job overall and made sure I was ok with the placement of my items. When it was time to pay the guy asked for an additional $20 tip. Wow, is all we had to say at 1130am when our movers Mike H., Nick and Owen completed our 2 Bedroom (very furnished apartment) move from the 3rd floor!! To our surprise, they were done in 3 hours flat! We moved in the same complex just a different building and the 26 foot truck wasn't going to work, so they decided on the spot to use only the 3 Wheelers, and a few 4-wheeled wheelers to move everything else!! They gave us a low estimate then up charged us for everything. Including: a second trip- they needed a second trip(at time and a half) because they came to move us with too small a truck ( their biggest they said) but same guys were there day b4 saying one trip is all it will take. They get a star because they broke nothing. They get another star because they were easy to talk to. But I felt ripped off- they charged 40% over estimate. They had guaranteed no more than 10% over estimate. read more

Worst Experience with Movers EVER!!! 1. They asked me questions about the size of my house and the amount of furniture, boxes, appliances, etc. I wanted to move. 2. They told me that in my case, 3 guys could do the job in 4 hours. They declined my offer to bring my own friends to help with the job, saying their guys would take care of it all, no problem. 3. They showed up at my house at the right time on a Saturday morning, walked through my house and looked at all the stuff there was to move. We had about 50 boxes, a bed, a couch, a dryer, a fridge, a washing machine, and some desks and tables. One desk and one bed still needed to be taken down, a few boxes needed to be topped off and closed. 4. To my surprise, the head guy tells me: "Sorry Sir, but you are clearly not done packing, we won't be able to help you." After some further prodding, he said "YOU HAVE CLEARLY BEEN UNDERBID, THERE IS NO WAY WE CAN DO THIS JOB IN 4 HOURS". I offered him FULL PAYMENT if they only move the boxes and let me hire a truck and do the appliances and furniture myself. He declined and they left me sitting with NO MOVERS, NO TRUCK, NO NOTHING, while my house was no longer inhabitable. Sure, you have an argument saying that we had not fully finished packing. But whose fault is it that I was underbid. You guys are the professionals and make an estimate about how many people and how long it takes to move my stuff. I told you what I have and you told me three guys could do it in 4 hours. It is entirely YOUR FALSE ESTIMATION of the size of the job, that led to this mess. The "You aren't done packing" routine is just an attempt to cover your mistake up. I GOT WITHIN A HAIR'S BREADTH OF SUEING YOU GUYS, but I simply can't be bothered. I had to find myself a truck and call friends and move everything myself in the most chaotic and painful way possible. Clearly you bear at least part of the responsibility. And you just walked away and left me hanging. Very, very disappointed in your attitude. Just writing this makes me itch and reconsider legal action. Warning: Your furniture may be damaged. Plus: Hints below. It started out well with good follow-up, availability and price (around $500 for a small 2 bedroom/2 bath) condo. The mover was recommended by the hi-rise. I arranged a pick up at 11:30 so we wouldn't overlap with a tenant moving out of the new place. The block of time to move into our new place was from 12-4pm. With an 11:30 pickup we were calmly finishing our packing and going our for a bite when we got a call, "We will be there at 10:00" What happened to our extra 1 1/2 hours?! The movers were focused on getting it done as quickly as possible and only focused on the 12-4 block of time for drop off. HINT: Be very clear about the pick up time, not just the drop off time. We were ready. Everything neatly stacked and bagged. The guy comes storming in, "We can't take this stuff like that. No bags, this box is too small, surfboards are a problem . . . " He gave us some BS about PUC load requirements, whatever. We ended up stuffing lots of stuff in the wardrobe boxes. Fortunately they brought 6. HINT: Ask the mover to bring extra wardrobe boxes for your clothes and odd shaped items. HINT to Owner: I realize the guy is a mover, but ask him to make a quick connection with the clients. Maybe comment on the weather for 45 seconds would help increase the chance for referrals. Later in the move the main guy said, "Did you know your desk is broken." I said, "No." "Well, because it was sitting in the house maybe you didn't notice", he said. This desk was a 65-year-old Danish Contemporary, which we had set up to drop off for sale at a store along the way. To make it easier to transport the mover wrapped the desk way too tightly with shrink-wrap and busted it all up. The store wouldn't pay me as much so I lost $200. The leather couch wasn't wrapped - the guys rubbed it on the walls and left scuff marks on a couple of places. The mover tried to fix the marks with a Sharpie . . . no thanks. My wife pointed out to me that the end of the bed was damaged. Lo and behold, when we returned from a trip outside it was fixed. Actually, the guy must have heard us and covered the mark with a Sharpie - it still looks like crap. HINT: Make the movers cover items you are concerned about with blankets and/or shrink-wrap. It was time for the tip. The other 2 guys worked hard, and were kinda cool, and the main guy wasn't too bad. But after we missed breakfast with the early pick up, having 2 pieces of furniture damaged, and losing $200 on a desk broken by the mover I lowered the tip a bit. I gave the mover $80 and said, "I would have given you a bigger tip, but I lost $200 on the move." The guy acted like a pissy bitch and left. HINT: If you use Discount Movers be forewarned: These guys are cheap for a reason. They are focused on moving fast and will be taking shortcuts protecting your stuff. Keep an eye on how they pack, and you might be OK. read more

Hired this company to move my 84 year old mother from her 1 bedroom apartment to a similar apartment just down the street. They moved most of her things, took payment, and told her they would be back at 9 am the next day to finish the job. They never showed up to finish the job. When I called the manager to discuss the situation he recommended I get some boxes and finish the job myself. I would not recommend using this company. read more

He gave a ballpark estimate over the phone, then we went through the items we needed to pack and move and gave a specific quote (almost spot on his initial ballpark). They even were able to accommodate our last-minute planning with needing someone to pack and move our 4 bedroom house within a week! And the price was one of the lowest I'd been quoted. After scheduling we had a personal matter come up that changed our move needs, so didn't proceed, but the Discount Movers team was understanding. So some three big burly guys showed up at my husband and my apartment to move us!! They were kinda on the unfriendly side, but they were in and they meant business... We signed the contract, very professional and they were off!!! I was a hot day, and I figured I might cheer them up by getting them some drinks so off to the store to buy some Gatorade's... eh... worked a little... my husband overheard them that the last ladies they moved treated them like interior designers... moving the couch here, no there... over and over... a five hour job... and 15 dollar tip.... they were pissed....I would be too... So our estimated move of 4 hours only 2 because they hauled ass so awesomely.....they warmed up to us a little and were nice.... we tipped them 40 bucks a person... hey.. it was worth it... the move went so fast....and I did not lift a finger.... super awesome they take the pain in the buttness out of moving... Highly recommend them, just take care of them and they will take care of you!!!!!! read more

We moved this past weekend, and this was my first time using professional movers. I think this means I am an actual grown up now. The whole process with Discount Movers was really smooth. I requested info online and then Jerry called me to discuss the move. When I explained the amount of stuff we had, he said he was willing to give us a 3 hour minimum rather than their standard 4 hours. Wooo! I knew it wasn't going to take that long, so I was happy we wouldn't be getting overcharged. They called ahead of time to confirm and just generally seemed to have their stuff together. On the day of the move, Paul & Mike showed up right on time and they exceeded our expectations. The were friendly, professional, funny and most importantly, THEY HAULED ASS. Seriously. We were out of our old place and in the new one in 2 hours and 40 minutes. They were absolutely awesome. I have nothing but positive things to say about this company. read more

I've used Discount Movers at least 4 different times, starting around 2010. Positive: They've always finished in the quoted timeframe and have cheap rates. Negative: Carelessness, laziness, blatant requests for tips. The past 2 experiences, however, were less than satisfactory. Ashton was the mover in charge, and had a negative attitude from the very beginning. He complained, answered questions with a "leave me alone" tone, and had the other two movers doing more work than he was. During one of these two recent moves, my s.o. helped them unpack and they STILL complained about the job they were paid to do! Ashton moved slower than the others, but all 3 muttered grievances for the duration. They wrongfully made me feel guilty about my belongings; our things aren't especially heavy or difficult to move, & we followed all instructions for packing. Several years ago, the movers who helped me were friendlier & helpful. They even offered to move items that they don't typically take. During these past two moves, however, it was a stretch to get them to even complete the basic requirements of their hired job. This last move (7/9/2017) was the worst yet. Examples: They stopped at the store for drinks before unloading at our new place while 'on the clock'; They didn't take everything; They scratched a bookcase; They dragged items on the ground; They nicked a wall & plaster fell off; They stained the carpet with their dirty shoes, and we had to rent a steam cleaner last minute to remove it as an attempt to get our deposit back. I know damages may happen, but there was a whole lot less care this time. For this last move, I'd also requested 4 garment boxes. They did bring them. However, they filled one up with boxes. We did not realize this until after the fact. Then we only had 3 garment boxes available and not all of our clothes fit into them. We had to move some of the clothing ourselves, in addition to the other items they did not move for us, which was clearly not ideal - or why I hired movers. When we brought this concern up to Ashton, in a monotone voice he replied with a shrug, "You guys have a lot of clothes." To top it off, after they left, we found one of their precious garment boxes in our garage! They hadn't removed the boxes in it, either. To me, this showed pure laziness on their part. This was all pretty frustrating. However, the MAIN reason for this review is as follows. Once the move was finished, we went to settle up with Ashton. Another mover was standing with Ashton as we were counting out the cash for the total. We paid the quoted amount, then gave all three movers $20 extra each as a tip. For clarity, this was less than a 3 hour move, with only a 1 mile drive between places. There were stairs on one side, but only a townhouse on the other. The 'bigger' items we have only include one bed, a couch, and 2 lightweight but somewhat tricky to transport glass cabinets. I Googled the appropriate amount to tip movers, with most results listing $5-$20 per mover. We decided on $20. HOWEVER, as the money was handed over, one of the movers complained! He said "we'd tipped $40 each last time" (which wasn't true). Ashton then said, "We killed it for you guys." In my opinion, no, they did not "kill it" for all of the reasons above. They also were very loud in our complex, so much so that we were afraid our new neighbors might complain (i.e., yelling at eachother from the alleyway through the upstairs bedroom window). They did the bare minimum with poor attitudes. My s.o. felt pressured to pay them, but we didn't have any more cash. So they followed him to the bank! Being a person who has worked in restaurants, I'm well aware of the importance of tips. However, I cannot EVER imagine asking anyone for a tip, much less asking for MORE of a tip. This was ludicrous to me. The amount tipped should reflect how well a job was done. In this case, $20 each was more than they deserved. I've mentioned what happened to several friends & family. They were all shocked by this behavior as well. Looking at the Yelp reviews, I see others have been hassled about tips too (search through and there are many!!), and have also noted their carelessness & negativity. Even though my two poor experiences were based around certain movers, I now wonder how common my experience is. Positive side: Being very upset, I called the company. It was Sunday, but John still got right back to me. He listened to what happened & apologized, offering to refund the extra $60 we didn't want to tip. John has been pleasant & helpful every time I've spoken w/ him. A few weeks later, I received a call from Jerry (the owner) offering to pay for our steam cleaning cost as well. I found this very kind, & much appreciated. John & Jerry seem to be stand-up guys. Unfortunately I did not get the same impression from the movers during these past 2 jobs. Hopefully this will change after incidents like mine, and from other Yelp reviews w/ similar issues. read more

My first two moves with this company both had 3 movers each time, even though they quoted 2. This time around, I didn't realize that I had accumulated more stuff - I definitely should have requested 3. It would've made the move much easier overall. I hired Discount Movers based on recommendation from a co-worker. They did a really great job! The guys showed up on time and with a friendly attitude. The office and I had had a miscommunication, and the guys were only set up to pack my kitchen whereas I needed just about the whole house packed. The temperature was already in the upper 80's at 8am and quickly rising. I was pretty concerned at that point! BUT!! The team aced my expectations. They packed up everything, working double-time but not at all sloppily. They stayed upbeat and focused even facing a much bigger job than they'd anticipated. They worked tirelessly in the oppressive heat, even while going up the long flights of stairs to the new place. They had me sitting in my new apartment in four hours flat. Overall 3.5 stars. Movers were late by almost 4-5 hours because of the delay on the previous order. I was kept updated by John on the current status but still. Movers themselves did a really good job, fast and accurate. However only one out of three was wearing a mask even if I myself was wearing one all the time. The paying process is kind of awkward too, I was handed a peace of paper where I was asked to evaluate quality of work and an iPad to pay/add tips both while all movers stand around looking at you, feels kind of weird. read more

I had the worse experience ever with Discounts Movers. I had used them a couple of times before in the past with no problems so decided to use them for my move 5/18/2019. When the guys showed up I told the lead we were moving to a downstairs unit on the same property. This is a very big complex. I told him they would need to use the truck because it was too far to move our stuff walking across the complex. That's when it all started. The lead person argued with me he wanted to walk across the complex. I told him I didn't feel comfortable with that because I felt it would take longer and cost me more money. He told me he was refusing service and left. This left me in a bind because I had to be out of my apartment the next day. I called the office to complain. I didn't feel I got much help there. The person at the office did call and arrange a move with a competitor company Coleman movers which they were great. I will never use Discount Movers again. My advice to anyone considering using them is "NOT TO". If Coleman's movers had not come through I would have been responsible for paying more rent at my old place. The crazy thing is the other two movers with him felt it should be loaded on the truck but my husband was told by them because he was the lead it was his decision. I'm not sure why he wouldn't listen to me since I'm the customer and paying for a service. This makes me think he wanted to take the slowest way to charge me more. I will say the other two guys were very polite the but the lead was rude from the beginning. AGAIN, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY FOR YOUR MOVES. If you need a great moving company use Coleman's movers. You won't regret it. *****I have to add to this review because the manager at the office just called me. Not to discuss what my concerns are, not to apologize for my experience but to yell at me because I left a bad review. I had to hang up on him. What kind of company is this? As I said I used Discounts Movers in the past and had a good experience each time but I guess this is the new Discount Mover's experience. Again, I do want to thank the manager at Discount Movers for arranging for Coleman Movers to do my move last weekend. Because of that I now have a great moving company I can use for my future moves.
