Was told it was an hour wait to dine and it was well worth it. Served warm chai and mint tea while we waited. Charismatic bartender made me "the best margarita" ive ever had after I explained my tequila deprivation whilst traveling europe. Once seated our waitress came in hot- prompting us to simply reply "yes" to every dish suggested. Family style is the way to go, and I wish we were a family of 20 to be frank. If there's one place you absolutely must eat at in London, it's Dishoom. Fair warning, if you go on a weeknight, you will wait in line. But trust me, it's worth it! While waiting in line, we were offered complimentary chai and mint tea. Fabulous by the way. We waited about 1.5 hours on a Saturday night. Once inside, you're transported to another world. The restaurant is beautiful inside and all the guests are very cozily sat together. Soak it all up. We ordered the vada pav, lamb curry sandwich, and the Ruby chicken (murgh makhani), along with rice and roomali roti. It was all so fabulous and delectable. The service was very quick and hospitable. Honestly, it was my favorite meal of my London trip and I'm glad it was my last. I think for the atmosphere and quality of food, this is very reasonably priced. Inspired by the Irani cafes of Bombay, Dishoom today offers a modern, trendy atmosphere with amazingly friendly service, great drinks, and if you come late, long waits! That being said, as we waited, we were entertained the entire time by the bartender, and after ordering, the food came out lickety-split! The waitress started out by bringing us three chutneys that went well with every dish, though I was partial to the refreshing green cilantro-mint chutney. The Shakarkandi Chaat was a special dish they were offering for Diwali, and this flavorful mixture of fried sweet potato chunks topped with shredded beets, radish, carrots, along with yogurt and tamarind was an explosion of flavors and mouthfeels--it was sweet, tangy, savory, crunchy, soft, and creamy, all at the same time! The Gunpowder Potatoes were simple potatoes grilled, broken apart, and tossed with seeds and green herbs, but they had an amazing flavor and the heat was toned down nicely with the yogurt sauce that came on the side. The "Bowl of Greens" was an excellent vegetarian side dish of grilled broccoli, kale, and green beans, tossed with chili and lime--nothing crazy, but very tasty. But my favorite dishes had to be the signature Black House Daal, a deep, creamy, rich stew of lentils cooked for over 24 hours; as well as the Paneer Pineapple Tikka, which were marinated and grilled paneer slices served alongside grilled pineapple slices for a sweet and tangy twist! On the side, we also ordered the very thin Roomali Roti and the Garlic Naan to go with the dishes, and every last bite was flavorful and delicious! Due to all the hype around this spot, my family and I decided to try it last weekend on our trip to London. Our server was extremely helpful and ran us through the popular items and his personal favorites on the menu. We ordered the chicken tikka, black Dahl, prawn curry, gunpowder potatoes, lamb kebab, and the cucumber salad. The food was more than satisfactory and everyone was happy with what we ordered but it didn't have the particular authenticity that I was looking for. We made reservations well in advance for a party of 5. The hostess tried to seat us at a table, in which someone was already there, and then seated us at a table that was near the waitress station which was NOT our preference. Honestly, the ambiance even outdoors still felt like apart of the restaurant and I felt it to be even more cozier with less people to navigate around. It was perfect for our group. Our waitress before the table change was kind; our waitress for service was fantastic. They really know who they're hiring and it elevates the experience. She gave us many suggestions and recommended we order about 12-15 dishes for our group. She even went about to explain the menu twice as we had a latecomer to the group. That being said, we ordered the following: garlic naan, cheese naan, the shoreditch special (the lamb raan), samosas, okra fries, chicken tikka, chaat, prawns koliwada, chicken berry brittania, chole puri, house black daal Honestly, I forgot to take pictures, which I was sad about, but anything you order will NOT be disappointing. Sometimes you dont have to say much. I've heard London has great Indian food. I was told that its hard to find a bad spot. My 4th day here and this was the first place I decided to try. I ordered the Pau Bhaji. As a general rule, I make my meals around a meat dish, but this was hands down the best vegetarian dish I've ever had. Service was excellent. I forgot to ask if the nuts were peanuts, so that's on me, but the food was delicious. We got very lucky with our walk in (no reservations for parties under 6) because there was a huge line out the door on a Thursday by the time we left. Pre-COVID review: Our last meal in London before heading on a train to Paris was at Dishoom. BF was excited to try this place as I rarely pick Indian restaurants to try. We came right at 11:45 am, so breakfast has just ended. We were seated, got our drink orders taken (BF got an Americano [£2.70] and I got a Thums Up -- Indian version of Coke [£2.90]), and then waited. At 12:01 pm, our server said the kitchen was backed up with breakfast orders, so he'll come take out food orders in 15 minutes. True to his word, our orders were taken at 12:15 pm. We ordered several items to try. * The chicken berry britannia (£9.50) and dishoom chicken tikka (£7.90) were both a bit dry on the sauce side, so our server recommended adding either the house black daal (£5.90) or raita (yoghurt). The britannia came with rice mixed in and served in a stone pot. The cheese naan (£3.50) is excellent with the daal. * Okra fries (£4.20) looked dry but was well seasoned. * Since I don't eat lamb, keema pau (£5.50) was solely BF's dish to consume. It came with 2 toasted buns. BF said it was good with a little bit of spice and it builds up heat in your body. The best food I had in London, period. While on holiday in London, I did extensive research about the restaurants I HAD to try. DISHOOM ended up being 1st on my list. Iraní Cafes were disappearing and they created this gem. I visited the Shoreditch location. Upon arrival, more likely than not ... there will be a wait. They don't take reservations after 6pm for groups of less than 6. Full disclosure: ITS WORTH THE WAIT. They offer complimentary shots and chai tea while you wait on line. As the line progresses, they'll lead you to a bar area where you can order an appetizer and drinks while you wait. In my case, we waited just under one hour before we were seated. This ended up being less time than they had anticipated. We were led to a downstairs dining room. Busy, crowded and loud. Groups of friends, families, people on dates... a very diverse crowd. Very vibrant atmosphere. Our waitress Naomi was a dear. First thing, she walked us through the menu and explained how everything worked. There is a lot on the menu, including vegan and vegetarian options. For our meal, we shared the House Black Daal, the chicken tikka, the jackfruit biryani, vegetable and lamb samosas and the prawns. Food didn't take more than 15 minutes and came out HOT. Mostly everything was a big enough portion we could share in between 2. The Black DAAL was SPECTACULAR. SO DELICIOUS. Think Lentils in a creamy sauce, with a tomato base, tons of flavor and herbs. The Jackfruit biryani was also AMAZING. Jackfruit is well known as a good pork replacement. I promise you, you won't be able to tell the difference between Dishoom's juicy jackfruit and savory pork chunks. It was AMAZING. I would absolutely recommend both of these dishes. Everything we tried was super yummy. For drinks, I had the Cobana Colada which was a type of pina colada. Very light and fruity. Great as a dessert drink. We ordered a variety of plates, and went all in for one of the sauces. I recommend sticking with their "staples" and venturing off afterward. Long review ahead! So let's talk about Dishoom. But first a disclaimer - I'm an absolute novice at this cuisine. This place showed up on many must try lists accompanied with warnings of often very long queues. We basically couldn't get a reservation after 5:45 but the website cheerfully announced that walk-ins were welcome. Given the particularly inclement weather that night the two of us thought we just might catch a break. I guess Londoners, like New Yorkers, are hard core when it comes to trendy food. There was a decent line the length of their covered walk to the front door - maybe about 10-15 people. There is a person to check you in at the head of the line who cheerfully estimated 55 minutes (!). Thankfully the line moved quickly (probably since they were mostly in bigger groups). A few more points about the service even before stepping inside. There was a gentleman walking down the line serving small cups with warm chai or alchy drink - which the gals in front took the last of but he was happy to get for us except by then we reached the front of the line anyway. Second, there's a gap between the covered walk and the actual entrance - because the rain resumed and was starting to fall between the gap (less than a foot), he held the door open and held up an umbrella while we entered. Wow. Needless to say the service inside was just as gracious and warm. Once inside, we were handed a beeper for part 2 of the wait but this time we could settle in at the bar. Started with a Bollybellini for her and a Botanist gin and tonic for me. Bellini tasted delicious - slightly fruity and light. The Botanist is hard to find so I was glad they had it. It was served with a separate mini bottle of tonic water - fancy. Paid for it using the beeper number so they could link it to the final bill - smart. After what really felt quick due to everything to see and watching the skillful bartenders craft the drinks, we got buzzed and was taken to our table which was downstairs. We got seated at a small two seater by a column in a somewhat crowded area. There was an open kitchen area down there too. The service was so friendly and helpful with suggestions and answers to our many questions. We ordered the lamb samosa and chili chicken for apps and for our mains, the chicken berry Britannia and prawn Pathia. We ended up ordering a side of roomali roti (but got what I think was just plain naan) which was unnecessary. The server brought out a trio of chutneys which I think they also sell bottled. The samosa was freshly made and was delightful dumpling. The chili chicken, a play on a Chinese-inspired flavors, was just ok - kind of dry and not particularly memorable. The prawns were so flavorful and the roomali roti it came with - a thin but stretchy wrap - was so good. It was like a flour tortilla but lighter. And lastly, the Biryani (my wife's first time trying) was out of this world amazing! It was a savory pot full of basmati rice, cranberries, and chicken. All washed down with some Kingfisher beer and their house IPA - it was more than just a spectacular meal, it was an experience. read more

Absolutely amazing food and service at Dishoom. We recently stopped by for breakfast and the sausage rolls, including the vegan one, were incredibly delicious. The spiced scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked and had layers of flavor in every bite. The house chai is a must try and they even gave us an extra cup to go! Large variety of vegetarian and vegan options. The value for the quality of the food here is incredible. Quite disappointed with my experience here, as I loved the food at the Covent Garden location when I went a few months ago. I got the shrimp pathia, which I've never had before as an Indian dish. It was a lot of food, but the romali roti was just alright, nothing special. The shrimp was grilled well and tasty, but the sauce was a bit light on the flavor. I also got a mango lassi but it was watered down, very disappointed with that. I got a chocolate chai for after my meal and it was too sweet, although tasty. Service was alright, it's very dark inside for the ambiance, not too big a fan of that. Long line when I left around 6:30PM (I made a reservation for 5:45PM - would definitely recommend doing so). Won't be returning back to this location (also liked the fish dish at the Covent Garden location a lot, which is only available there it seems). Meal came out to be around 30 GBP. read more

Stopped in on the way out of London as there wasn't much else open at 11am. Have had good Dishoom experiences before but this was my first time trying their breakfast. They serve only the breakfast menu until 12pm, which has almost no Indian dishes and is very disappointing. A friend told us they would serve the other dishes if we asked but nope, only breakfast, which is a menu consisting of basically sausage, egg or bacon wrapped in naan (naan is great but if I want a bacon wrap I'm not coming to Dishoom for it). They do serve lassis at breakfast which is nice I guess, and they have a patio to sit in that is enclosed and heated in addition to the hectic dining room. But with so many Indian options in London I don't have a reason to come back, we walked down Brick Lane after and got Indian food after to help make up for this disappointing meal. read more

Dishoom is just as good as everyone says and it's not overhyped (I was a skeptic)! The decor is vibrant and the restaurant has a nice ambiance. I went to the shoreditch location and they have outdoor and indoor dining. I was sitting in the outdoor area which was heated and incredibly cozy. Our servers were incredibly attentive - they filled our waters (but not too much), checked in on us, and brought us our food pretty quickly. I ordered the roomali roti, the daal, and the chili chicken. For drinks, I tried the Indian Gimlet and the Espresso Martini. I typically wouldn't have ordered the daal because it's something I could easily make at home but the daal was absolutely phenomenal. It was so flavorful and creamy but not too heavy. The roomali roti is soft and fluffy - perfect with the daal. In terms of my drinks, they both were really good. The espresso martini has chili in it, which added a nice flavorful kick to it. This is some of the best Indian food that I've had and I've been to India. I'm going to dream about this place for a while and hope to be back!! read more

For our last night of vacation in London, my daughter insisted on taking us to Dishoom. She's been working in London for 3 months and has taken everyone who's visited her to the Shoreditch location, and we all agree it's great. Firstly, the wonderful hosts were highly accomodating. Due to Uber difficulties, we were an hour late for our reservation. We kept in phone contact with them and when we arrived, they honored our reservation and we were able to circumvent a considerable line. It seems as though our daughter knew the menu inside out, and ordered so much I couldn't keep track of it all for my review! However, here's some highlights: COCKTAILS: Espresso martini was great, and had a bit of kick owing to the use of chili liquer(!) and black walnut bitters. Also tried the Permit Room Old-Fashioned..Woodford Reserve with bay leaf and green tea reduction, muddled and aged 3 months in a small, serving size bottle known as a "peg" Poured over ice, this was unmistakably an old-fashioned, yet mellow..highly recommend! SMALL PLATES (we tried 4): vegetable samosas were rich and warm, and coriander/mint chutney was provided for dipping, a nice touch. Okra fries made me feel I was back in the southern USA . And the Dishoom House Chaat was a new epicurean experience for me...Fried sweet potatoes covered in yogurt, pomegranate, beetroot, radish, and carrots, and drizzled with tamarind and chutney...very delicious and a generous serving size! Chilli Chicken..Indo-Chinese in nature, this is a nice sized plate of chicken chunks crisped in a soy, garlic, ginger and chilli mixture...spicy and delicious! FROM THE GRILL: We had the chicken tikka, prepared differently than I've had in the States, but VERY good...also had the spicy lamb chops. These were my favorite thing we ordered...they are large, juicy and delicious as they are marinated in garlic, lime juice, ginger and spices...highly recommend this one! SIDES: you must of course try the garlic naan to push your food around and enjoy. Basmati rice was perfectly moist and sweet. Also had the "chilli butter-bhutta...this is the Indian version of what is served as Mexican street corn in the States...corn on the cob, charcoal grilled, buttered, then finished with chili, salt and lime. DESSERT: I had another new experience with the "Gulkhand Mess". This is Dishoom's Indian variation on the quintessential British dessert Eton Mess. Fresh strawberries thrown into a mixture of rose syrup, cream and meringue. Very sweet, yet sublimely refreshing. During the course of the meal, our server was very professional, prompt and attentive. Twice, the gracious manager on duty stopped by to check on us. The atmosphere of Dishoom was warm and inviting, yet with a trendy edge. All in all, a very pleasurable dining experience to top off our vacation! read more

Yes, the hype is warranted. I made a reservation a month in advance, and this place still had a line outside when I showed up at 5 pm. This location has a beautiful setting with covered outdoor seating. Old books on South Asia and the Middle East line the shelves, and the plants give the vibe of sitting in a garden. The food was excellent. I have traveled throughout South Asia, so I was familiar with the dishes, and I will have to say I really like this British twist. Not oily at all, with many fresh vegetable side dishes to choose from. The chaat was my favorite (tangy, sweet and savory), but the daal (comforting with just enough spice) was a close runner up. The garlic naan was a bit too thin for my liking, and we much preferred eating the meal with rice. Definitely add to your London must-go list. read more
