So here we are in downtown Newburgh, NY a block off Broadway. My husband traveled these parts when he began his Naval career in the 80s and said to me, "this is one area in Newburgh you don't want to get caught at night by yourself". Lo and behold it's 2025. And what did we come across? A gem called District Ramen! Owners, filmmaker Robert Fontaine and his wife Monica, are bringing a combo of their ramen passion. The result is dedication to quality, presentation and flavor. You can definitely crush it here. Hubs and I did. District R. is modern- different from the standard(?) "less is more" minimalist feel at traditional Japanese restaurants. The loud massive wall art to the left as you walk in says it all. It's all good. Our drinks were refreshing- missed on the oomph. My Shishitos were nice and hubs loved his pork gyozas. Although hubs is a meat eater, he decided on the veggie broth base+veg toppings. Of course I had that also. Their plant-based broth is a mind-blowing, garlicky comforting powerhouse! These folks need to earn a medal for offering savory-packed ramen right off the bat. How the server can spoil the broth, but not the spirit (and great ramen!) of District Ramen. I tried this spot on a whim. Craving ramen before a show at the Ritz around the corner. I give the owners a lot of kudos. They are investing in this neighborhood that is pretty hardscrabble and disadvantaged, and it looks like it's working for them. The space is simple and attractive and very busy at 5:30 on a Tuesday. I think the owners were the kindly couple helping shore up the overwhelmed waiter on the night I came. Perhaps the opening line of my review is a little unfair. The ramen was excellent. But it's true how much a harried, aloof waiter can change the entire course of a meal for a diner- at least for this reviewer, who prides himself with having been a waiter for many years. It's hard not to "see" when and how waitstaff might easily turn around a diners experience of a restaurant with a simple gesture or quick interaction that says "I am aware of you" or "I want you to have a good time here" but this guy did not look like he was going to spend any iota of his energy on me. Perhaps if I was part of a larger party (= larger tip??). Too bad. I was rooting for him! So to this end, I'm having trouble giving more than a 4 star review as so much about my visit ended up being haphazard, like my waiters service. But on to my culuniary experience and the dish "#47," District Ramens lovely take on the classic ramen. The broth was rich and flavorful, the wavy noodles cooked just right. The Japanese egg was also cooked to perfection. And the other items balanced out a beautiful dish. Unfortunately the kitchen missed the pork chashu. But when I mentioned it one of the pleasant owners brought it out, insisting in a friendly way that I have it for my last bites. I did have a side of chicken karagee added (+$4.50) which is a fair price for the tasty nuggets, but mine came out cooler than room temperature. I was disappointed they aren't made to order. I do understand it's a time-saving thing to pre-cook before service starts but I also expect my food to be warm. Finally, I got stuck at being charged $2 for a small portion of chili oil. I was bemused at having to pay for a condiment that is a staple of the cuisine. Like ketchup, or salad dressing. Their house-made chili oil is a lovely touch but the up charge is a little hard to swallow. IMHO. read more

This is a small, cozy place in the heart of Newburgh. Matthew our server was friendly and just the right amount of attentive. He gave us our space as we went over the menu. We ordered gyoza, and two ramen dishes. The "standard" #47 and the spicy one, called the Illuminator. Both were delicious and not too salty. A common problem with lots of ramen shops. I can be understanding of that but when someone who sat down after you gets their food before you (or it appears so), I start to get more impatient. Saw that District Ramen was very near, so drove by to check it out. The restaurant is gorgeously designed and we love the atmosphere. Team, let me introduce you to better than bouillon, amazing flavor and complexity. The soup base lacked any hint of umami and for ramen that's very sad. Look, I lived in Asia for 4.5 years, so am I picky? Yes, but this place had amazing decor, very authentic. Guessing that the meat versions were good but you cannot forget the vegetarians, and in Asia there are a lot of us. But here we are few. But don't try to pass off low flavored food as vegetarian. I remember seeing their "coming soon" sign. Finally, I have had a chance to try this spot. There aren't a lot of ramen spots around here unfortunately so it was definitely something that I looked forward to. It was a girls night for me but this is a perfect date night spot! The inside is just so cozy, the staff, the waiter we had, they were all just so warm. So both my friend and I had the same ramen. I've never tried Takoyaki so of course I had to order it. We both had the No. 47. The takoyaki, the temperature, the sauces and the presentation was spot on. The only exception is that the octopus was a little rubbery inside. The ramen was a good sized portion. A lot of noodles, the pork was well cooked. Again, what would take it to a five, was that the broth could've had more flavor, maybe some more soy would've been it. We are from out of town. After visiting The Vintage Emporium. We were looking for a small meal to hold us over before dinner. Found this highly rated ramen shop on Yelp that was 10min away. This place is tucked away in the middle of a very residential neighborhood. Don't let that deter you. It's worth a visit. There's a nice looking coffee shop next door which looked good too. At 3pm in a Sunday afternoon there was only one other diner (no big surprise) but there was a brisk flow of takeout. The interior is pleasant, newly built and trendy with Japanese vintage posters and artwork. The staff was super nice and attentive. Forgot to take photos but we had the Pork Gyozas, ward salad and Japanese buns. Wow! Everything was spot on and delicious. Too bad we live far away as we'd be back often. They offer a selection of ramen noodle soups with optional customizations and Japanese style appetizers. The bar offers a few regional beers on tap, sake, and non alcoholic drinks. The pricing is moderate here. I stopped by District Ramen for an early dinner recently. The place was not too busy yet and I seated myself at a table along the wall. For a starter, the Japanese Buns ($9 plus tax) had tender pieces of BBQ pork(minimalfat) with crisp cabbage & mayo of thick soft dough buns (bao). Next, The 9 U U ramen ($18 plus tax) had a pork miso broth with firm ramen noodles, corn, scallions, bamboo, pork chashu, bok choy, butter, bean sprouts, & pieces of fish cake. This ramen was had good heaty flavors and this "9W" ramen was an excellent choice. I needed a container to pack up half of my ramen. The check came out to $29.20 with tax and before tip. Overall, I enjoyed a solid good bowl of ramen with interesting ingredients and tasty pork buns too. The service here was prompt and attentive with top offs on the ice water and each course was served within 10 minutes apart. Very happy a full on ramen place was built locally instead of always going across the river to get ramen. So with expectations I came here to try after noticing it during my delivery runs. The server here could not be more sweet and friendly, making suggestions, explaining the menu and checking up on how the meal was enjoyed. I will say it does take some time to get food, but it is worth the wait since from start to finsh handmade fresh gives peak favor. The gyoza was tasty and had great flavors and the dipping sauce definitely had alot flavor despite it being bit strong on vinegar. For the gyoza only thing I knock is crisping up the skin more. For the NO.47 ramen, incredibly thin savory piece of cha su grilled just right, chewy noodles and plenty of it, marinated eggs just yolky enough and bathed in flavor and last the broth just right amount of sweet,savory and salty. For the ramen, definitely could use less bean sprouts and green onions, since it was hard getting to noodles with amounts. I hope they expand the menu over time since it's great so far, but could use more app and ramen choices.
