Tokyo was a quick and easy stop during my break to grab a few bites on Main St. in New Paltz. The menu is well rounded and offers Vegan options. My "crispy tofu" appetizer was nothing like it. To add, the inside was so jiggly, it broke down to a mushy mess. The Tuna roll and avocado roll were both tasty and fresh- except, they were on the puny side. Tokyo Sushi has some strong opinions and I, can see why this isn't everyone's favorite. I think it's fair to say that customer service rocks though- even if there's one server. read more

Well, the beer and wine were good. Service was good until the place got busy and there was just one server for over ten tables. Sashimi was barely edible. Did not look good nor taste fresh. Chicken teriyaki was not good. Chicken was cut in such small pieces that almost all was overcooked. Broccoli had too much stalk. At least it wasnt smothered in sugary sauce. My husband and I came to T.S. for sushi. We've been several times before and always enjoyed our food. The place is clean and although there was only one waitress, she was quick and efficient. We ordered the "Foxy Lady Roll" to split and I won the appetizer- he wanted edamame- I chose the Korean BBQ chicken. My husband wasn't impressed with the chicken so I ate most of that and sopped up the chicken in the red, somewhat spicy sauce. Let me tell you. The food was so fresh and I loved it all. My husband and I had the salmon tataki and it melted in your mouth. We ordered the sushi and sashimi for two. The menu says it's 10 pieces and three rolls. Not 8 as it says I'm the picture. It was great, except for the octopus. That was a little chewy. But other than that every was great. The waitstaff did ask how everything was, but when we said thank you after they gave us their food and took our dishes away, I didn't hear them say your welcome. Good place for lunch in New Paltz. I loved their poke bowl! I got a poke bowl with mixed fish (tuna and salmon) and it was so fresh and delicious! The portion was huge and they didn't skimp on fish, and it was packed with leafy greens. Even though I love greens, it was a bit too much for this dish. I wanted to dig right into the rice. We ordered the poke (tuna and salmon), chicken tempura, and the special dinner box. First, the positives: the poke bowls were good (salmon, and tuna), although the "ginger sauce" was basically the standard Japanese restaurant ginger salad dressing. Now the negatives. Chicken tempura: Japanese cuisine has at least three different ways to fry food: you have your tempura, your kara-age, and your katsu. This place found a fourth way. Whatever they are claiming is "chicken tempura" has no connection to tempura. (It's closer to kara-age, combined with something else and then overcooked). The Tokyo special dinner box. Here's what it lists: Sushi (4 pcs) and sashimi, California roll, shrimp tempura, negimaki, gyoza etc What we got: shrimp and vegetable tempura (and this actually used a tempura batter, so it's not as if they didn't have it), bulgogi, gyoza. Ever walk into a restaurant that's only 25% full, but every single other table (perhaps 25 tables in total) is piled high with dirty dishes? It was on the later side on a Saturday night when we happened upon Tokyo Sushi. Despite this welcoming scene being not very propitious, we didn't turn around and walk out. We were greeted by a waitress with panic in her eyes and she hurriedly cleaned off a table for us and handed us menus. Like any typical Japanese restaurant, there's not a ton of vegan options, but I'm always happy if I can get avocado cucumber rolls. I'm slightly addicted. Except they came out almost purposely coated in tobiko (aka flying fish roe). I was beyond words hungry and sent it back, wishing hard for the edamame I had ordered as an app and had to flag someone down to get. When it arrived, I realized it was merely boiled frozen edamame but ate it anyway. And then, a pile of dishes from one of the tables next to us, crashed onto the floor. A woman who appeared to be in charge appeared out of nowhere to clean it up but weirdly left the other dishes that covered those tables as is. I was getting the feeling that some kind of disaster had struck on Tokyo Sushi that night. I know, you're thinking this sounds mighty 1 star, right? But on a positive note, my sushi came back out and there wasn't a single tiny orange egg to be found. It was fresh and very tasty (avocado was perfectly ripe). My guy said his sushi was perfect. I have never tried Tokyo sushi for the many years I have lived in New Paltz, but I decided to try it for the last two weeks. Two weeks ago I called at 11:30a.m. to order take out, (online it says they open at 11:00 am) A lady picked up and told me they are not open yet. I tried to ask what time they would open but before I could get my question out she hung up on me. I called again and asked and she said 12:00. I ordered a specialty roll, and a lunch bento box. Bento box is definitely reasonable for the price (tasty). The specialty roll wasn't anything special for the price, will not be ordering again. I decided to order just regular rolls today. I ordered the spicy tuna and spicy salmon roll. When I got home they gave me the wrong order. (something I don't like) I would usually take the L and just eat whatever they gave me. But I decided to drive back to get the right order. The front woman started to argue with me saying I ordered what she gave me. I told her that makes no sense because I don't even like what they gave me. I'm sorry, but having good service is listening to your customer and trying to make the order correct, not argue with me for what I said. She gave me attitude and took back the food. When she gave me my correct order I said Thank you for she wouldn't even look at me. Also when you look at the prices online, they charge differently. They need to update their online menu, but didn't bring that up. One of the better sushi spots in the area. Have been coming here for years yet really sad that they recently closed the hibachi side. Nevertheless, still amazing food and the place is typically extremely busy. The midori roll is a must try. They have different specials each night, salmon one day, crab the next, etc. Recently tried their new "sushi bomb" which was amazingly delicious. The only reason they did not get 4 stars is the service is typically very slow. Waited over 20 minutes for a refill of water the last time I was there, and the time before. Not a complete deterrent, but when you are like me and douse your rolls in spicy mayo - water is a necessity. My fault for walking into a place that still has an old business name (Toscanini & Sons Gourmet Shop) still on half of its Awning. My fault for thinking that it was a good spot to drop into for sushi. My fault for further enabling this fabulous staff by tipping them (because we are not monsters). Owner/management not the friendliest and if they make a mistake with your order don't expect nothing for it. Not even a sorry. They need to work on customer relations, quality and consistency with the food. On our most recent visit the sushi was horrible. Had to change my previous rating of three stars to one star. One of my friends got sick and was in bathroom all night. Some of the rolls had extremely skimpy amounts of salmon or tuna. This place is going downhill very fast in terms of quality sushi. First, let me tell you about Tokyo Sushi. It is probably one of the best places I've ever been to. The food is amazing, the service is quick and fast, the atmosphere is booming and space they have Soju there! This is the first place I have found such a gift. I found Tokyo Sushi by accident and I'm glad it happened. This restaurant has a Japanese menu and it also has Korean dishes. You can have bulgogi and sushi. This is a great place to take a date. If you love Korean food I would suggest coming here, it is much better than Toro in Fishkill, but that's my humble opinion. Maybe I'm biased because I did not get sick eating here. Maybe I'm biased because I love New Paltz much better than Fishkill. Easily this warrants five stars and I believe I will become a customer on a regular basis here. Meanwhile, the sushi is 100% Willis approved. I was at Tokyo Sushi last Saturday with my friends Alex and Donny and the sake was flowing. If you go to New Paltz for one thing make sure you come to Tokyo Sushi. Plain and simple, be here now. P. We ate here because we had our dog with us, we were hungry for sushi and the better al fresco dining spots in town were either full up or would not seat us with a dog -- so we grabbed the first outdoor seats we could find. The meal was a huge disappointment, but what really rankled was the arrogance of the staff - who tried (unsuccessfully) to convince us that the ramen noodles in our nabeyaki were soba noodles in disguise. Really!? Soba means buckwheat. I ordered Nabeyaki SOBA. I got Nabeyaki RAMEN. The waitress and the manager tried (unsuccessfully) to convince us that the ramen was a lighter colored soba, and that the amount of noodles in the serving would be less because udon noodles are thicker (duh). Just because we are not ethnic asians does not mean we have stupid stenciled across our foreheads when it comes to asian food. We returned the soup and they had an attitude about it. Very good sushi. Not NYC excellent but very good. Sashimi is 3 slices to an order and Unagi and ikura sushi are 2 pieces each. I don't get out much so I order through Door Dash. The ordering process is easy, but there is a problem: It does not allow for any distinction between Sushi and Sashimi. Nor can you add things; like Avocado to a Tuna Roll or lemon to an order of Ikura. It is possible to place the order, and then call in to make it more specific. Specifically, the bibimbap, the traditional Korean rice dish, served within a blazing-hot stone bowl -- which will crisp up the rice along the side of the bowl, if you can be patient. Vegans can order their 'bap without egg or meat, substituting avocado and steamed tofu instead, without getting funny looks or yelled at (which has happened to me within the Korean restaurants of Northern New Jersey, different Yelp tale). The wait staff was inattentive even though there were only four active tables in the restaurant. The sashimi is overpriced for product that is not fresh. The teriyaki beef over rice was extremely salty and close to inedible. I have no clue as to what the other 25 reviewers see in this establishment. If you are in New Paltz and are in search of solid Japanese food, go to Hokkaido. Locals have told me for years to dabble in Korean section of the menu, which I never had done until tonight, partly because the sushi is always so well done. The "roll combos" are such a great deal that you can never go wrong ordering them. They have recently added the "yakitori" menu, little appetizers on skewers, off which I ordered grilled asparagus in sauce. For the price, it's certainly a fun and cute little menu option for sure. Off the Korean Menu tonight I ordered "Hwe Dup Bab" and I was blown away. The description on the menu was minimal to say the least (I think it said "sashimi and rice with Korean sauce"). It was a massive bowl layered from bottom to top: rice, lettuce, red cabbage, nori ribbons, salmon, tuna, "white tuna", crab, diakon, finally topped with a huge amount of orange tobiko. There was sesame oil drizzled throughout the dish. On the side they give you a bottle of the "Korean Sauce", a spicy mystery red sauce. I would use sparingly at first when eating the delicate sashimi, then use willingly when you reach the rice and lettuce. The price was oh so right, might I add. We had a charmingly friendly host as well who got extremely excited when we asked about the house made kimchi, which isn't on the menu. If you like kimchi, make sure you inquire! read more

We stopped by on way back from my daughter's birthday party, which was so much fun! Sushi is a family favorite so we dropped in for a Sunday lunch, party of four. I'll start by saying that the food was good. The service however was terrible and so I couldn't give a higher rating. Here's the story with a kicker at the end.. We placed our order for sushi rolls and miso soup. My daughter wanted a roll on the menu but it had spicy mayo on it. We asked the waitress whether they can make it without and the waitress assured us that this is no problem. So we happily waited for order. ..and waited..and waited. We looked around to find an almost empty restaurant, 1/3 of the tables were seated. When finally our order arrived, only 3 out of 4 of our meals came. Then we waited another while and the 4th arrived. I had spicy mayo all over it, which we specifically asked for them to leave off. Waitress took it back and then my daughter waited and waited.. Finally, we saw the sushi chef cleaning up behind the counter. So we flagged down a waitress to tell her that our order was not yet complete. She quickly picked up the sushi roll which was probably sitting there on the counter. We sighed. We ate and overheard another couple at a nearby table. They seemed like a nice couple enjoying lunch together. They called over the waitress and asked whether they had forgotten their order altogether! Then the waitress went back and returned from the kitchen. The waitress explained that they misplaced the order and asked the couple to repeat the order. The nice couple had had enough so they politely refused to repeat the order, told the waitress that they were leaving, walked out the front door hungry and annoyed. Food has always been good, service mostly good, but since the new, young sushi chef started, maybe a year ago, the fish quality, cuts and rolls have all really stepped up.
