Newburgh, NY - we were directed to eat here by a friend after we visited nearby Motorcyclepedia. It's a popular local hangout, and the vibes immediately strike me as: if this were my neighborhood watering hole, I'd be a regular here. The decor alone earns a star: rock n roll ephemera covers every surface - walls, ceiling, shelves and display case - and takes me back to the days when I went to "shows" and not "concerts." There's even a small stage in the corner for live music, so that definitely checks out. Our friendly server Dianne hands us menus printed on newspaper, and I needed a moment to decide between the large selection of comfort food classics with creative variations on a theme - burgers, sandwiches, salads, mac & cheese, chilis & soups, burritos, wraps, fajitas, rice bowls, and specialty entrées - finally settling on some apps and a burger to share with my kiddo (which I'm told are good here), while our friend went for a steak bowl. There's a surprisingly large vegan and vegetarian section. Surprising because I haven't come across many veggie-forward pubs that offer anything more than a perfunctory Beyond Burger/black bean burger and an anemic salad. Here, they actually respect the non-carnivore's right to have some decent choices. The "hot" wings are alright and not really hot (though admittedly my spice sensors are likely eroded from my intense affinity for heat), but the poutine was a standout, which we ordered with bbq pork add-on. And while it won't quite pass muster in Montreal (tbh I've rarely had authentic poutine in the US despite seeing it on menus a lot - the cheese curds are never right), it was piping hot and delicious. The revelation was the twisty cut potatoes underneath, seriously additive! I love places with heart, which isn't always easy to define but the effort can be discerned in the atmosphere and the details. The Wherehouse has got that spirit & essence. With 16 rotating draft lines featuring regional brews, and substantial food offerings that far outpaces the typical bar menu, it's a down-to-earth dining establishment with the soul of a dive bar, that makes you feel welcomed like a local from the get-go. read more

The Wherehouse turned out to be everything we didn't know we needed- truly the kind of accidental gem that makes the night. Halloween night at that. We'd been striking out, one call after another, as every spot in our town decided to close up early that night. So landing a last-minute res. at this tiny, offbeat bar-restaurant in Newburgh, NY felt like a win. We just wanted a few bites+drinks before heading to Briarcliff Manor for a Halloween party and ended up finding way more than that. Unbeknownst to us, The Dylan Doyle Band played that night and man...was he good. The kid uses funk, rock, blues, R&B in his mix. Plus he sang his own renditions of D'Angelo- to honor him that night, Chaka and several others. I mean...he absolutely blew us away! But imagine this: it's got the vibe of Tarantino's From Dusk Till Dawn bar feel, minus the vampires and gore. This place is welcoming, unpretentious, serves decent bar food and has an excellent vegan menu that goes wayyyy beyond the usual portobello burger. Carnivores are covered too. Drinks are ok too. I have been performing at this bar restaurant with my band the Dead Elvi for almost 15 years. The place has a very cool rock 'n' roll, hippie and even punk rock vibe. Imagine a cool dive bar kind of like CBGB, but with amazing food! And let's talk about the food, the owner Dan is a trained chef. The menu is so vast and eclectic. It might take you a while to decide on what you want to eat. And if you're a vegetarian or a vegan, oh my God, the choices are so abundant, but everything is absolutely amazing! Yall ever have that type of spot that makes you feel like you could relocate to whatever city it's in? Welp, Wherehouse was that for me this weekend. My friend and Newburgh native and I were catching dinner after a day at the lake. We usually keep it simple - burgers, beer, and wings for our post-fun eats and she was excited to take me here. "This will be our kind of vibe," she said. As soon as I walked in I knew she was right. Moody lighting, nice range of drafts (no sours though, booooo), great kitsch and artwork on the walls. Laid back and local. I ate good at the lake so kept it on the lighter side for late dinner. We spent the day at Storm King and were looking for a burger and beer. Thanks to Yelp!, we found another great place. So disclaimer, the location is in an urban area in Newburgh, we are from Troy, so didn't faze us much on the location. Enough said! The bar/restaurant sits on the corner with ample street parking. You walk in to an amazingly eclectic room with albums on the ceiling, rock music on the speakers, a Zappa Crapper, and plenty of things to keep you occupied looking around the space. Bartender and Servers were super helpful. Lots of beers on tap, in bottle, drinks filling its own menu with daily specials. Also, CBD and THC seltzers. The menu is in newspaper form with so many different options. The burger page is huge! Naturally we went for the burgers, the mister chiller burger(bacon, guacamole, and BBQ sauce) and the blue cheese burger(melted blue cheese, onion ring, and bacon). 1/2 pound burgers cooked to order. There seem to be more staff and folks tending the bar that I seem to remember over the last couple of years but there's nothing wrong with that. For the locals the wherehouse is definitely a comfortable place to go, a great place to hang out on the weekends especially in the summer. Tons of parking around the area and lots of other little things to go and see as well on Liberty street. What a great spot in the town! Great location, fun vibes that felt divy with a focus on classic rock music. I sat at the bar and looked over the many menu options and it's just awesome to see so many vegan and veggie things. I got the vegan chicken burger with fries, with a side of pierogis. The burger was pretty great, you can't go wrong with a fat vegan chicken burger! The fries were well seasoned, and the pierogies were OK. My husband visited her a few years ago and came home raving about their Mondo Bizzaro wings. He said they were the best he has ever had. I'll be honest. All I had was one glass of Cava at the Wherehouse. Five stars, you ask? Isn't that a bit hasty? True, I typically would wait for a second visit, certainly a visit where I spent more time, ordered some food perhaps, but here's an instance of love at first sight. We were wandering around Newburgh's waterfront and figured that Liberty Street would be more of what we had in mind for late afternoon libations. We peeked into several cute places on this historic street before landing here and couldn't resist the rock & roll neighborhood vibes that Wherehouse exuded. We bellied up to the bar and the friendly bartender handed us menus. We weren't up to eating at that time, but I love looking at menus so I can see if I can eat here, as a vegan. I was amazed to see a bunch of house made veggie burgers and an entire vegan section in the newspaper menu! And the all-time best compliment I can give a bar is that it reminds me of New Orleans. I wasn't prepared to be as blown away by my lunch here as I ultimately was. The Wherehouse looks like it belongs in Lower Manhattan. It has an overt hippy vibe with outdoor seating and the door wide open. The interior here is very authentic. Nice sized bar. Artwork on the walls (not on canvases but actually on the walls), vinyl records stuck to the ceiling. This place couldn't be more casual. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The menu is pretty dense. They have a multitude of burger options and even vegan options. This must be a fun place to hang in the evening but we were here for lunch. Bathrooms are very clean also. They have two and one is wheelchair accessible. The food was kind of amazing. Everything seemed really fresh. There were three of us and we didn't wait for anything. We also ordered the nachos as an app. The pico looked and tasted freshly made. The chips were served over a bed of sweet chili which was well proportioned and covered with sliced jalapeños. I ordered a burger melt which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of fries, tomato, lettuce and a pickle. My son had the shredded chicken sandwich and loved it. Everyone was really satisfied with their orders. We must have been hungry since I ate everything before I realized I hadn't taken a photo of any of the food. Worth noting -- our server checked in a few times with us. Never any pressure on ordering or settling up. The owner even stopped by a couple of times as she was checking on customers dining outside. Really an outstanding experience here and I'd come back in a heartbeat. If there is a downside -- parking can be sketchy and the area itself isn't what I called secured. The server with the ski cap was very chill and took my order down to a Tee and was quick. so, after a 15-minute wait he give me my food and thanked me for my order. very nice service here. The appereteaser , potato skins were crispy and pulled pork on top was sweet and savory, plus very tender, boneless buffalo wings were very tender and tasty, plus the sauce they bathed in were very mild, not overpowering, the angus sliders were alright, not much to say for them. The pulgasari burger, was cooked to a perfect medium rare, very juicy, plenty of amazingly, sautéed mushrooms not overcooked, bacon was lightly crispy and the Korean garlic chili sauce, was very sweet and savory, reminded me of a sloppy joe sauce. The meggster burger, was cooked medium rare as perfectly and meat was still juicy, now the mild wing sauce its dipped in, its hard taste it since its very mild. pepperjack cheese was melted pretty well and the fried egg was very yolky still. Bf and I came here to watch the knicks game that ended in shock (lol) they served us 20 minutes before the kitchen closed (9pm weekdays) and came out with bangers. Calamari tasted yummy and fried extra crispyy. Bf said the burger and fries were chefs kiss and I had the chili and garlic wings which were sooo good. The drinks were made great too. Server and bartender were wonderful as well, he was nice enough to turn on the extra the extra tv for our angle. I recommend this place wholeheartedly even if just for food pickup. First of all -- I'm suuuuper appreciative of the vegetarian/vegan options here. I just moved to Newburgh and it hasn't been as easy to find out here as it is in other cities I've lived. I tried the Shepherd's Pie and it was super comforting! I'd definitely get this again if I go back. The chili is advertised as sweet and spicy and that's exactly what it is. In my opinion, too sweet, and I wasn't interested in finishing it. But if that's what you're looking for in chili - go for it! It wasn't bad, it just wasn't for me.
