Our favorite neighborhood spot! This is our go to at least once a week! Fresh yummy ingredients, with unlimited toppings and a great self-serve sauce bar. My husband's go to are two flour tacos (I would recommend three if you're super hungry as they are sized a little small) Mexican style with steak, black beans and sour cream. I usually go with the burrito bowl with chicken, pico, cheese, sour cream and beans. So good! Highly recommend getting chips with queso. The chips are some of the best we have ever had. I don't eat tacos often but wanted to give District Taco a chance cause of the high reviews. After a disappointing meal earlier, we walked around. We weren't even thinking to eat at District Taco. We just found it by chance! Most of the places we went to in DC were small, especially a casual joint. Maybe since District Taco has other locations too, they were given priority for a bigger space. I like the look. We got the 3 tacos for $8 deal and their habanero sauce. After paying, we got a number and got a booth to sit down and wait for our food. They bring our food to us. There is a salsa bar too so we stocked up on more sauces, jalapenos, and cilantro. All the booths had outlets for you to charge your phone and a napkin dispenser above it, that was something new to me. When food came out, we were ready to eat it. The habanero sauce is soooooo spicy. We love spicy food but sauce made us cry and nose run like crazy. So delicious. What makes me love District Taco is not only for the service, casual feel, and the habanero sauce is the fact that I got a vegan taco (oh yeah, I got corn and flour tortilla too) and avocado is my base. Good food at a casual restaurant. Went here recently for dinner had a great time. The cashier was friendly and everything was clean. I had a chicken burrito and my girlfriend got steak salad. Both were really good, but the salad could've used more cheese. Overall, it was definitely worth the price and there were some good options at the salsa bar. I like this place, the food is fresh and flavorful, but they screw up orders more than they get them right. If they get your order right it's 4 stars but they are really inconsistent. Made a delivery order of quesadillas with a good number of toppings, etc., plus an order of queso and chips, and a Mexican coke. The order arrived without any toppings (plain!) and minus the Mexican coke. Called the store who offered no apology, but said they'd credit my credit card for the coke. We'll see if the credit comes through. I have my doubts. Whomever answered the phone could have cared less about their sloppy work. All this on top of greatly increased prices, a prepaid tip, and little other recourse. My advice to all: stay away from District Taco on Pennsylvania Ave SE near Eastern Market. I used to love this place -- lots of good food at a reasonable price. I'm on a plant-based diet, so I love the fact that I can get beans and rice. I still went because it was a decent portion, and the food was tasty. The burrito bowl was my go-to meal. But now, they have cut way back on even that. There was maybe half a cup of black beans, and a little more than of rice. The bowl looked sad and nearly empty. I understand costs rise in a fast-casual restaurant, but beans and rice are quite literally the cheapest food you can serve a person. When you look at all the expenses of a restaurant, beans and rice are the smallest part. So why cut back so far? I'm giving this place a one star to counter the previous ratings. Tips for parents: The kids meals are five dollars and come with rice and beans and a drink. There are high chairs but they are around the corner by the restrooms. They aren't visible; but they are there! No booster seats. The food is good and comes out quickly. Flavors are good and there are lots of salsa options. Portion sizes were generous. Non-conventinal sodas like birch beer, cream ales, black cherry. The tacos are great no matter what you get on them, but they run on the small side for the price. 10 dollars for 3 tacos isnt a bad price but when I finished all of them I found that it just curved my hunger, I wanted just a little bit more. District Taco. District Taco, District Taco, District Taco. No, I'm not stuttering....just trying to process the name. For people who've been in the DC area long enough and are "foodies", District Taco is more than just a local chain that is kind of like Taco Bell meets Chipotle. District Taco is an oxymoron. Tacos....in the district? Like real ones? Ones that would make a someone from the west coast eat in peace and silence? See, I'm from the Northeast so as much as I've traveled around, I can admit that I'm no expert on tacos, let alone authentic tacos. Now, if we're talking delis, pizzas, sandwiches, subs, etc....those are my areas of expertise. Tacos? Yo no se! I've had a number of items here with mixed results: Fish Tacos, Carne Asada Tacos, Ensalada Yucateca and Huevos Rancheros. The Fish Tacos are excellent. Very light and fairly tasty. The fish was quite tender and moist. My primary complaint was the tacos are pretty tiny. A shame really because it was very good. The Carne Asada Tacos are actually decent sized. After that, it's pretty bad. The taco as a whole seemed a little flat in terms of flavor and dry. Most importantly, the steak was badly overcooked, which made it dry and chewy. The Ensalada Yucteca was a pretty boring salad. At least the staff was moderately generous with adding a protein (I went with steak). The lettuce was a bit wilted, which doesn't help. It wasn't a horrible salad, but I definitely wouldn't order it again. The Huevos Rancheros consists of two eggs over hard, rice, black beans, cheese, sour cream, salsa, lettuce, tomato and a corn tortilla. The concept is similar to eating an open faced or to a lesser extent deconstructed sandwich. I have to say, this was really really good. Everything came together well, including the eggs, which tasted more like scrambled as opposed to sunny side. The salsa tied everything together by adding a little tang and acid. Would absolutely order again. The judgment of pricing depends on perception. If compared to higher end establishments, this place is a bargain. Compared to fast food joints, I'd say it's just tad expensive as a full meal including beverage will push your bill to the $11-$12 range. Overall, I like this place. It is a little hit or miss, however, for food that may not be authentic (definitely feel like it's Chipotle in that regard, food made in mass quantities) but is tasty, it's a nice option to have around. Until I get out to the west coast, this will serve a much better purpose than most other places around here. Adios!! read more

Unfortunately, District Taco was a big disappointment. You'd think that a restaurant claiming to serve great tacos would have the good sense to heat up their corn tortillas before making their tacos! Cold corn tortillas....ugh! I had the al pastor, carnitas and barbacoa tacos. Only the al pastor taco was good. The other 2 tacos were dry and not very tasty. Thankfully, they have a good salsa station and that helped me get through the meal. Bottom line: It's the simple things that matter. Normally, I am put off by Burritos....but TODAY...my interest has been renewed thanks to District Taco! I think my turn-off was due to Chipolte overkill since it's located within my office building and their skimpy servings. Or perhaps, in general and speaking from my experiences the partaking in a Burrito.....that just simply missed the mark and left me not to be impressed at all....by the ones I have had from most Mexican food chains in the DMV! Oftentimes you are left with a big fat "dough-like" ball filled with rice and beans...barely any meat...and air pockets of sour cream/sauce. I mean who wants to bite into a burrito to only find an empty pocket of guac, sour cream, rice or a mound of rolled tortilla!? This seems to always happen to me at Mexican/Tex-Mex food chains like Chipotle and Southwest Moe's (as a comparison). Bamboozlery...I tell ya! LOL Well, this was not the case with District Taco. The burrito I had was on point! Who knew?....Well, now I do! I am talking from the meat proportions to the fillers of rice, beans, guac, salsa and all components. It had the perfect balance of ERRYTHANG!! I had the Burrito Majado! Insanely delicious!! A semi-spicy burrito made with black beans, rice, cheese, Salsa de Chile, sour cream.......and packed with meat (your choice of protein)! I chose a combination of steak and chicken. It is also served with lettuce and tomato on the side with re-fried beans underneath. It was the perfect combination. The meat was exceptionally well-cooked, juicy, SOOOoooo tender and seasoned.......which left me wanting to take one bite after another....before chewing the initial bite and swallowing. The entire composition of all the components put together and topped with Salsa de Chile...made the ultimate burrito experience for me. Even, the salsa and topping bar items were so good that I wanted to snag extra for the spare bag of Doritos I had back in the office! I am thoroughly happy I stumbled onto this place. Not to mention, on top of great, fresh food..........The customer service was excellent and the establishment very clean; especially the salsa and toppings bar. OVERALL: 4 Stars for the Food + 1 Extra "Big" Star for the Excellent Customer Service/Cleanliness! 5 Stars easily!! And, I would offer up more if my Yelp rating tool allowed. After suffering through the recent opening of Chipotle on Barracks Row (which is the first Chipotle on the entire planet I actively want to die when walking into), the arrival of District Taco has impossibly high expectations for me. Let me explain something. I love burritos. I don't mean I like burritos. I mean I LOVE burritos. Everyone who knows me knows that I could eat a burrito 7 days a week, 3 meals a day, if it was socially (and dietarily) acceptable. I like them as much as George Constanza likes velvet. So through the power of social media, myself and a few colleagues were able to hit up District Taco's new Capitol Hill location for lunch on their soft opening today. I've never been to a District Taco before, but have always heard good things, so my initial impressions: 1. The renovations to the Yes! Organic Market they did are great and the huge ceilings make the place feel very comfortable for dining in. 2. District Taco is as delicious as advertised. 3. District Taco is appropriately (maybe even affordably, considering surrounding options) priced. 4. District Taco is going into my weekly lunch repertoire. 5. Staff was ultra-friendly. 6. Their fire alarm definitely works. 7. I still love burritos. Having more in common with a Baja Fresh than a Chipotle, DT offers a mixture of tacos, burritos, and nachos with the expected toppings and combinations. Interestingly, they also offer bacon, which we all know makes anything -- even a burrito covered in some red chile sauce -- better. They also serve breakfast (burritos and huevos rancheros), which is available all day. I can say that if the breakfast burritos are as epic as the chicken one I got, you'll be skipping lunch. Add in a salsa bar, a cool Mexican Flag chandelier, an efficient ordering and queuing system, and there it is: finally, a solid new fast casual restaurant in the Capitol Hill / Barracks Row area that should demolish Chipotle down the road and Burrito Brothers up the street. Let's just hope the overwhelming hoard of people that will show up don't ruin what looks to be an incredible addition to the hood. read more

Go here for the tacos only, specifically the fish and shrimp tacos which are only served on certain days of the week. The fish tacos are there Fridays, Saturday and Sundays and I caught up with the shrimp tacos on a Monday once, but I think they are supposed to be there on Thursdays. In any event, they are delicious! I always get them as prepared and if I get the carne asada tacos, I get them done the Mexican way and everything on a flour tortilla. Fresh ingredients, fast take out service and deliciously cheap. Love it. Avoid the burritos. Full of rice and not much protein. Kind of reminds me of Sol Mexican which is not a good thing. Seriously, if you are one of the seemingly countless people who have had their love affair with Chipotle ruined by the franchise on Barrack's row (I don't blame you) don't fret! Just head to District Taco! They have incredible fish tacos and their burrito desnudo is a great gluten-free option. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. It's a very similar ordering style to Chipotle you choose your item, then your protein (steak, chicken, pork, etc...), then your toppings, it's as simple as that. But here's the thing, they have a lot more options than Chipotle does!!! They also have a gourmet soda fountain, and other gourmet sodas in bottles. The dining room is not as crowded as Chipotle, it's also not as loud. The service is also considerably faster than any Chipotle I've ever been to. This place really is the local, and UPGRADED, answer to Chipotle. Don't forget to ask about their punch card program, if you buy ten tacos you get one free. read more

Really not a fan of this place. I don't particularly love Mexican food (my first Mexican restaurant in 16 months), but I spent a better part of my college years eating at one of the best Mexican places in Boston and the food here is not up to par. We found ourselves here for a quick meal before heading to the airport and both grabbed the 3 tacos for $7.5. I got the shredded beef with corn taco, and grilled veggies, lettuce and jalapenos as toppings. We didn't have to wait long for the food to come. My corn taco wrap was too thick and the inside was a little soggy, the lettuce did not taste extraordinary fresh and the meat was dry and tough even though it was marinated in sauce. And, well, the grilled vegetables just weren't there. They do have a salsa bar with four choices of salsa and varying spiciness for the tacos and the space inside the restaurant is plenty. The staff were respectful enough but mostly looked bored. I was pretty disappointed about the experience, but the price is definitely a budget place for a quick bite. read more

I asked a couple questions about some of the options and things on the menu, and she treated me like I was asking her to break her arm. It made me feel uncomfortable because she acted irritated that I was asking her a question and not just placing an order. Bad customer service. The food itself if good. It reminds me of chipotle.. but I thought it had less flavor personally. The rice was sorta dry and stuck together in lumps. The chicken didn't have a lot of flavor. I've been back to District Taco two times since my first visit, when I had a terrible burrito experience. And all I can say is, don't get the burritos. If you are willing to forego burritos you will not only have a much better meal, but the flavors you experience will be intense and exciting, and fresh, without being marred by some stupid refried beans or rice. As in my previous review, I'd like to point out how beautiful this building is. It has dramatically improved the neighborhood and I hope other businesses on Pennsylvania will follow suit. To order, you enter through the entrance doors and wait in line while they take your order. There is always a line because the menu is confusing and the cashiers have difficulty taking down all the orders. Even if you know what you want, it takes forever and a line forms. Get the tacos. These are 5-star tacos. Every single flavor is awesome, I've had them all including the fish ones that are a special. I seriously love them all. They are juicy and tender and have fresh ingredients. The meats are stunningly different in flavor, as they should be but let's face it, often you can't even tell the difference due to overspicing. Not here. The meats are superb! I've tried both flour and corn tortillas and I don't even know how to choose between them. After you order, a waiter brings food to you at whatever table you choose. I'm a 4x taco guy and my wife does the same. It's a pretty big meal but it's reasonably priced and really, really good. And as I mentioned in my previous review, I'm a huge fan of their sodas. I've had the same guy wait on me both times and he always makes me feel like a noob when I ask a question, and like I'm a burden - he always is distracted by other things. The staff that brings food to you are always nice. The hot sauce is good. I couldn't tell if my chicken was chicken or steak or pork. The burrito was dry and the rice tasted more like it was for sushi. My biggest complaint: not selling bags of chips alone. Yeah, I want some crunch, I want to dip chips in the salsa bar salsa and in my burrito which I already paid extra to add guac too. I don't want more guac or more salsa or queso.
