Came here for lunch because of the good recommendations. The line can be somewhat long but it moves very quickly. Ordering here is simple. Type of meal, meat and toppings. That's it. Had a burrito bowl with Al pastor. Their al pastor meat comes with pineapples for any dis that you order. I thought that was quite interesting, but later found out it was quite delicious. For ~$8, you really can't beat that price, especially in downtown DC area. I added lettuce, jalapeños, grilled veggies and sour cream. The meat was very well marinated and I was surprised how good the pineapples that came with it paired up. I had a few different salsas that were available downstairs. I really enjoyed the green one and would recommend it to those who do not like spicy salsas too much but just want that kick. Overall, a great place for lunch. I was very interested in trying this place but I can't recommend it. It's an overpriced version of Chipotle that is even dirtier and with worse service. For $75 we got 3 bowls, 1 burrito and 4 soft drinks. Portions were ridiculously small at the price. Salsa bar advertised? Doesn't exist. In fact, they do not have any salsa. Or hot sauce. At all. None of this is updated on their menu that is hanging in the restaurant. After paying this ridiculous price and got our food, we found the whole dining area trashed. Every table crusted with food, the floors chips, spilled soda puddles etc. I totally lost my appetite, which was probably better because the bowl was bland, filled with all rice and almost nothing else since the order was missing toppings I ordEred. read more

Do yourself a favor and get out of this district if you want decent food. Let's taco 'bout it. The place is overall kinda grimy feeling and kinda confusing. There's not much space to stand if you're not ready to order- so come prepared with your order. They don't have many options either. I got the build your own bowl and it just lacked flavor in general. The same was true for my friends burrito. They charge chipotle prices for mediocre at best food. But they at least have bathrooms. My consensus: Do yourself the favor; just skip McDonald's and go to District Taco. District Taco offers a generous variety in assembling a quick taco, burrito, or salad (if that's your thing. Tacos are offered on either corn or flour tortillas, and select specials are offered on certain days. I dropped by on a Saturday, when luckily enough the fish taco was available (fish tacos are available Tues., Fri., and the weekends). I ordered one pollo asado (grilled chicken) on corn, one Itza on corn (vegetarian meat crumbles), and one fish taco on corn (comes pre-dressed with pico, shaved cabbage, and chipotle mayo, but I ordered mine with the mayo on the side); all topped the "Mexican way" (onions and cilantro). The food itself is simple, if not presentable. Sure, the tacos are squashed and maybe a little messy, but you're not at a fancy sit down restaurant so it's fine. Besides, how else can they wrap those things in a neat bundle for you without the genuine hurry in trying to shove it out of the line and in front of you? The sit down area reflects that of a traditional Latin casual restaurant, in where you find a space next to a stranger (especially during lunch rush), eat your food diligently (but still savor it!), and then get up and out of the way so the next person waiting can take your seat. That said, this place isn't necessarily tailored for groups unless you're willing to split up and eat by yourselves during that lunch rush (or better yet, just take it to go). Overall, I had a good time eating here. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food came quickly and was exactly what I ordered (my favorite of the three I ordered was definitely the fish taco, while my least favorite was the itza through no fault of its own, it was just a little drier than the others). Drinks are self-serve, and a salsa bar is available with a variety of options that you can test out. Are you going to be blown away by the food? Probably not, but with the prices matching that of Taco Bell, it is definitely superior and much tastier. I got the three tacos for $9 and overall it was okay. I like that you can customize what you want in your taco but the meats in all three tacos were really dry. I got the pollo, Barbacoa and the meat substitute. I added jalapeños to all three tacos which made them quite spicy. The variety of salsas are pretty good. I just wish they had bigger plates to put the salsa in them as the tiny plastic cups can't hold that much. Also, if they have signs saying they're trying to reduce plastic usage, why don't they have paper straws and reusable bowls for salsa? Great concept for this taco bar. You start with a few basic decisions, like choosing the protein and type of tortilla, and then you build from there. They offer some suggestions, but leave the add-on up to you. Of course, that puts the ownership on you to make the perfect taco! Regardless of how you make your tacos, I recommend the guacamole- it was delicious! The only challenge is the seating. There are some tables outside but very limited indoor seating, and with the variable DC weather, it is sometimes necessary to sit indoors. I needed my taco fix while I was in DC and so I came here. I just had one taco and it was about $3.50. You get to pick which meats and pack it up with whatever toppings you want so it can be a pretty filling taco and if you choose to put alot on it. There was absolutely no line when I went and the venue is actually pretty large and well layed out. There is ample upstairs seating. I ordered a chicken taco on corn with basically all the toppings and it came quick. They bring the food to you. The taco itself was good (I just had one taco but I felt satisfied) and really nothing wrong could be said about it, not any mind-blowing flavors but good enough for a simpleton like me. I also tried my friend's breakfast tacos and I was pleasantly surprised. They ordered potato, bacon, egg, and cheese tacos on flour and though I'm generally not a fan of breakfast tacos I really liked these. Food was ready shortly after ordering, you can see the kitchen where there is an assembly line of food being made, which is entertaining while you wait. Seating is limited, there's an upstairs and outdoor seating area. Food. We got tacos (they have a build your own option), chips and queso. The carne asada was DRY, but the chicken was pretty moist and well seasoned. Chips were what you'd expect and the queso was good, I'm very pleased that I splurged on it. There is a self-service salsa bar with different varieties of salsa for whichever heat you desire and a good selection of toppings if you want more (onions, jalapenos, 'cold topoings'). Giving it a 4/5 because I'd come back here again, it was priced fairly, but will be knowing that I'm risking getting some dry-ass meats. read more

Heard a lot of buzz about this place but I don't think it lived up to my expectations. The tacos were average and it tasted like any other commercial Mexican place. None of those authentic flavors. I do think the portions are pretty good though. I ordered just two tacos with almost all of the toppings and they were pretty filling. I liked the carne asada one more than the al pastor. I also opted for the corn tortilla and I liked how they doubled the tortilla for each taco so that the toppings didn't rip through once it got soggy. It was still pretty messy to eat and the ingredients itself didn't really taste fresh. They have a nice salsa bar with fresh cut onions and cilantro, and the place seemed generally clean. With such high reviews, I was worried there would be a line but there was just 10 people ahead and the line moved quick. When you get to the counter, you follow a 3 step process and they give you a number. You can choose to sit upstairs or outside but they'll call your number if you're taking it to go or bring your dish to you if you stay in. I ordered the steak burrito and the reason why I liked this place is cause they give you 3 options: American, Mexican, or breakfast. I love breakfast burritos! For $8, you get a good sized portion. The tacos here were pretty good. I'm usually not a big fan of soft shelled tacos, but I did enjoy my guacamole tacos a lot. They were delicious and flavorful and I'd definitely get them again. The only downside is that they were a bit small, but perhaps next time I should indulge in more toppings. I just have a question - at what point do soft shelled tacos stop becoming tacos? This would also be included in my Dating series of Yelp reviews from June 14, 2018. Introduction & Very First Visit to Any District Taco in late August 2015: I've been to this location three times. In fact, the first time I ever tried a District Taco was this location with a friend in August 2015 before a concert at the Warner Theater. I assumed they were only in the District with the name District Taco, but I realized they were in Arlington & Alexandria and started in Arlington. In spite of living in Arlington, I always ended up going to this one & Capitol Hill DC locations except for once on a date in Rosslyn Arlington in August 2016 (during a heat wave), which I think I will make my 100th review of 2018 in honor of that triple digit high temperature that day. My impression on my very first visit of any District Taco on this August 2015 night was that the tacos were quite good. I got the 3 tacos with different meats. The tacos are kind of small, but they were filling enough and quite tasty. The cashier helped me with the menu since I told him it was my first time there. Second Visit here: I came here again in 2016-17 on a night I was driving for Uber. It was 9 PM, and I was hungry and was in downtown. Remembering how good it was in August 2015, I decided on District Taco for dinner. What sucks is that the parking meters go until 10 PM in downtown & other high traffic parts of DC. So, unfortunately, I had pay just to have the opportunity to eat dinner. Often times, I will drive across the 14th Street bridge and eat in Crystal or Pentagon City and park for free. DC has probably lost 100's of dollar of dinner business to Arlington over the years from me as a result of the meters going until 10 PM. But occasionally, I will cough up the money. Third Visit on Thursday, June 14, 2018: I had a date that included a trip to District Taco. We went to a movie screening at the Smithsonian for AFI Docs film festival. It was a first date from online, and she & I were affectionate. I mentioned DT, and she enthusiastically agreed saying she loves DT. We ordered. I got the carne asada, al pastor, & another meat. They brought the food to us within a reasonable amount of time. The tacos were delicious, but my date was even more excellent. We took a walk to the White House since neither of us had been over there in a long time at night. We kissed, and she had told me she was pleasantly surprised. To make a long story short, we kissed again at the end, and it was by far the best date of 2018 to date (besides a few with my ex-g/f earlier in 2018) and certainly the best first date in a long time. The next day after a couple of texts, she said that she wasn't ready for a relationship after all (Her boyfriend had broken up with her fairly recently). That was a tough blow after one of the best first dates. Regardless, I will cherish my memory of us at District Taco plus other visits. Walking around DC, while pregnant, I knew I needed something to fill me up. We came here before walking along the national mall and monuments. I ordered the nachos borrachas with carne asada Mexican way. Truly a filling meal! Plenty of meat and nachos covered with queso will make any pregnant hangry mama happy. Juicy flavorful meat, fresh pico de Gallo, that gooey queso and crunchy nachos sold me so fast! I scarfed this entire thing down, surprisingly without getting indigestion or heartburn! A solid good. The build it yourself menu put me in mind of a "Moe's" or similar semi-fast food location. Only steps from the White House it was refreshing to find a low cost, casual meal option. Seating was an issue, place was loaded up with lingering diners, forced us to use the outdoor seating. Decent food and salsa/pico bar. I wouldn't call is "authentic", sort of an elevated Taco Bell. This place has Amazing tacos!!!! :D After my group finished our WH garden tour they turned to me to find a good place on yelp to eat. As one of the highest rated places nearby I decided on District Taco. I had heard by word of mouth from several people that it was good, but I was still unprepared for the sheer deliciousness of these tacos. After satisfying my Mexican food craving with Chipotle for the past three months this was unbelievably good! I ordered the 3 taco deal for $8. Otherwise they are $3 each. You can mix and match the flavors of the tacos, so I went with two chicken and one al pastor. The girl taking my order warned me that the al pastor came with pineapple which I said was fine. The tacos for our entire group came out so fast! We had our individual orders within 5 minutes. Our only problem was the lack of seating. The only seating they have is upstairs and it seats probably around 40 people. The entire area was packed. Luckily some people left and we were able to squeeze in next to another group. I saw some groups of people waiting as long as 15 minutes for a table. This seemed kind of silly for eating a meal that takes 5-10 minutes to eat. Several people must have thought the same, because many groups took one look at the crowded room and left with their food. The tacos themselves were so good. The chicken were my favorite. Even though I knew pineapple was going to be in the al pastor, it still surprised me. It was good, but I would probably stick with the chicken or try another kind of meat next time. Tips: Get the 3 tacos, its just the right amount of food to fill you up. They are wrapped individually so you can take some home if you need to. Order flour tortillas. My friend got the corn tortillas and her tacos kept falling apart. Be prepared to find alternative seating, especially if you come at prime meal time hours. Get a soda! They have a great variety of specialty fountain drinks I tried the cola, cherry cola, and a white soda I can't remember the name of. All were sweet and refreshing. I've heard so much about this place from friends but I was disappointed. On the day I came, there really was no line to speak of so I got to the cashier easily and ordered a regular old carne asada burrito (nothin fancy for this no frills gal). Seating is extremely limited in this establishment. I went upstairs with my friend and the place was packed. (Tables were long with several different groups of people at each, reminiscent of the seating in some food courts). Fortunately, I didn't have to wait long at all for someone to bring my burrito upstairs for me (when you order the cashier gives you a number). The staff was extremely friendly and efficient but this place gets 3 stars from me because it was probably the most meh (and small) burrito I've ever paid for ($7.70 with tax). The rice wasn't very flavorful (and a tad bit over cooked in my opinion), the black beans were just beans and the meat was just meat. No wow factor, it was just "eatable" and I was hungry. The ambience is cute and quirky for a fast-ish food place, very clean and as I said, staff quite friendly so no complaints there. read more
