If you love a good rummage, Ditmars Thrift S. has all the staples you would expect from a second-hand store: loud costume jewelry, books, CDs, clothes, kitchenware, vases, picture frames, etc. My kid scored a neutral-styled slim wooden tray she bought for her grandmother to store lotions+ perfume including a 1970s small book on women and fatigue..... for me. I purchased a zebra print cropped sweater with puffy sleeves for me- which my daughter said "it looks fun". They dont have stuff like stereo equipment or small appliances but i did see a little guitar amp & other random items so they might have what you're looking for which makes it worth at least one visit. read more

Can't find books for $.48 anymore even Goodwill charge three dollars. Bought some flip-flops for two dollars since I was planning on getting a pedicure the next day and didn't have any .Wish I had more time to look through the place and hopefully one day be back. read more

I'm not sure why these guys don't have a higher rating. I've been in a ton of thrift stores and this one seems to cycle through their inventory frequently. They always have new things coming in. You just have to know what you're looking for. They have some pretty awesome gems in here. Highly recommend. Everyone who works there is super nice, too. Honestly not that good. The prices are too expensive and even more expensive than goodwill. I came local because I thought it would be better than goodwill. You'll find every shirt is 7.99-12.99 all shoes about 17-20 The books are being charged for more than what they say they are priced and I don't think a used book that is falling apart should cost 3 dollars. read more

Thrifting is a thing. And if you want the ultimate challenge, stop by the Ditmars thrift shop. You will find so many treasures from many different time periods. They have a great DVD section as well as books. You can find all different types of clothes as well. I actually have seen Superdry coats there which are pretty expensive. Aside from their pricing issues, it's a decent thrift store. They have a lot of random stuff that is typical of thrift stores. I wish the Salvation Army and Goodwill in the neighborhood hadn't closed, because they were better stores that sold and accepted furniture. This store is too small to deal with furniture. It's a place where you have to dig and search to find what you might be looking for. It's usually kind of packed of stuff. The shoes are a bit of a miss for me. The clothes are just OK. Books are OK. Thrifting can be fun. You can find some really cool stuff at thrift shops. Recently a friend and I tried on some dresses where the sized labeled were ridiculous (such as a size 12 that was easily a size 4). That's not the store's fault though, they didn't make the clothes... My issue with this store is that their customer service sucks. 2 of the employees here should absolutely not be working in a retail environment. My friend and I tried on some shoes. I'm a size 5, it's tough to find shoes anywhere. As my friend and I tried on shoes we put them away every time on the shelf where we got them from - as we tried on shoes, a woman who clearly worked there sat in a chair staring at us rather than attempting to help out. Being stared at while trying things on is beyond annoying. It's rude and doesn't make a customer want to buy anything. Shoes here are not in any particular order so some assistance would have been welcomed. On our way out a man who worked here accused us of being messy. We WERE NOT. If I left 2 pairs of shoes unattended it was a lot. We left things as they were so if he felt it was messy then that's on them. Nothing here is organized so you want us to organize stuff and you want to make us feel like crap on the way out because we didn't buy anything?! My whole family loves to shop here! My husband always finds nice shirts, I LOVE their jacket section, and although they don't specifically have a kids section, my daughter can always find something in her size. My last purchase was a fire Micheal Kors grey leather jacket for $30 and a gorgeous Guess Los Angeles strapless summer dress for $15. My daughter's stuff is usually $6-8. Their shoe aisle always has cute stuff and they have a unique glassware section. They even have two dressing booths so you can try on your items! I can't recommend this store enough for such a great selection of items. The staff is friendly, and they are accepting if all donations. We often wander in here after running other errands just to look, but we almost always come out with something. read more

Not sure where the negative reviews are coming from? I've probably been in this shop at least 15 times now...sometimes to browse...other times to drop stuff off. I've never had any issues dropping stuff off, nor with 'rudeness' from any of the staff. As for comments that the stuff isn't very well organized.... it's a THRIFT store. Books are with books.... knicknacks with knicknacks.... skirts with skirts, etc. Beyond that, what exactly are people looking for regarding 'organization'? As for the quality of the items, if you want high-quality/designer, there are special shops for that in Manhattan. ;-) That said however, I have a very good EYE...like a HAWK. I can spot the quality stuff. Especially when it comes to clothing. I go to a rack of clothes and rapidly survey the clothes for the detail...the appearance of the fabric... the way the fabric 'drapes' or 'hangs'. I can spot the garbage asap, and ignore it. I zoom in on what appears to be 'quality'. And indeed, I've snapped up some great things here.... a silk top from STEVE ALAN ($$ store in Manhattan) for $5! A gorgeous corduroy jacket, fully lined and with beautiful detail at the elbows, pockets and back placket, from The Gap (clearly back when The Gap made quality clothing), again, for $5! I've also noted many other great steals here, which while not for me, or not my size, were clearly great finds for someone else to snatch up. read more

I'm quite sure this is a for profit store, and not like the Salvation Army store that uses profits to help people. DON'T donate here, since you're giving things that have value away for nothing. As a for profit, they cannot give you a receipt for a tax write off. They can get in serious trouble for that, and so can you. read more

Thrift stores are my jam! And this one did not disappoint. Decent pricing, large selection of good items. Especially for the area. I rate most places by the customer service I receive, and the guy who was running the store (pretty sure he was the owner) was awesome! Wish I would've gotten his name. Super friendly and interacted with his customers. Even threw an extra bracelet I had been eyeing in my bag as a gift. Which was completely unexpected and appreciated. We had checked out a few thrift stores while in town, and only purchased at this one. Everything was clean and in good shape. Both my husband and I got multiple items. The store was organized in a way that was easy to get around and find particular things you may be looking for. A large selection of higher name brand clothing items also. I just found out this business is NOT charitable non-profit organization, but will lead you to believe it is. It is a FOR profit business. A quick search on the NYS Department of State website shows that it's a regular business, with a filing date of November 2017. I think it used to be a charity, but no longer. If you're looking to donate to a charity, DO NOT donate here. The guy who works there (I think the owner) cherry picks donations for himself under the guise of charity. As far as customer reviews, the place is disorganized and way overpriced. Seriously, they had what looked like a circa 2001 beige desktop computer tower priced at $100. It also smells so musty you have to leave after 10 minutes. The customer service is horrid. The guy is rude and half the time he's not at the counter and you have to go find him. He's always on his phone. On the rare occasion you see something really nice in the window or behind the counter, he will tell you it's not for sale. I used to donate here and shop thinking it was a charity, but those days are over. I will never set foot in this shop again. read more

This place used to have great items and reasonable prices. I used to donate to them too thinking that they were part of Salvation Army or something similar. But not anymore. It is a private business! Please do not donate to them, choose a Salvation Army or church near you. The staff / owners are money-hungry with no respect for customers or any community service goals. They make up any prices they feel like and increase them for no reason right in front of your very eyes as you are about to make a purchase. Besides not having any cost with purchasing merchandise they feel the right to include made up taxes. The other day I got a receipt for $10 but when I got a statement from the bank they had charged $2 for taxes! I won't be going back there and I advise you to stay away! The two stars are for the Ditmars Thrift Shop as it was BEFORE the owners got wind that their clientele had changed from Greek immigrant famlies and working class people to hipsters and moneyed yuppies who think $10 for a beat-up, used purse is a bargain. In the 90s, this place was a fun place to visit. The clothes cost no more than $5 and it had a huge book section that was messy but fun to dig into. Everything was decently priced, like Goodwill or Salvation Army. Videos were $2 or so. I used to donate tons of stuff there because the people were so friendly and laid back. Sad to say, in the 2000s it got hip and pretentious like so many other places in Astoria. It got painted, a Persian-like carpet (!), boutique-like coat racks, precious window decorations, and the prices shot up like my rent. When I visited recently, I thought the clerks would turn up their nose at my donations. What a shame. I'm moved on to REAL thrift stores (i.e. Unique), not some wanna-be Housing Works, hipster-friendly, overpriced thrift store. read more

I have been thrift shopping since I was a teenager (before it was popular) . I was brought up poor but people thought I was rich. I might have reminded you of the character Molly Ringwald played in the movie Pretty in Pink. It is only latley since the bed big scare that I have not shopped at thrift stores. In addition years ago it was easy to find one of a kind designer clothes. Not so much any more since it has become popular. I went by here Sunday to make donations. The guys who works here are so sweet but to really find the good stuff you need to search and then most of the time-the stuff isn't that good. If I could have a day to re-organize I would pull a Salvation Army and organize by color and size and separate the ladies jeans from the men's. This store is open on a Sunday and accepts all kinds of donations. I was able to donate clothes, books, linens, housewares. The only problem is the parking can be challenging. The store itself has lots of interesting cool used items. It makes shopping on Ditmars fun, especially if you have an eclectic vintage style like me ! read more

I didn't think it was as poorly organized as the other reviewers would lead one to believe, but then again I spent a good deal of my teenage budget at a thrift shop so piled high with boxes that it was honestly a maze death trap. Every once in a while you'd find a cat lurking behind the racks. Creepy. Anyway. I thought the selection was second-rate, at least on the Friday that I stopped by. Labels like Forever 21, Wet Seal, and charging $8 for tops -- come on, that's practically retail. The reason that I shop in thrift stores rather than cheapy-retail is because I prefer higher-quality items -- judging from my visit (and I admit I only looked at women's clothes and shoes) Ditmars had none of that. read more

My favorite thrift store. You've gotta dig through the plus-sized beach cover-ups and 80's prom dresses for the real finds, but I've picked up some awesome tees, a brand new GAP blazer, and assorted costume jewelry. They have an extensive jean selection and the staff is always friendly. Prices have gone up over the years, but it's a nice balance between a dusty and picked-over goodwill and an expensive, carefully curated trade-and-sell joint. read more

This is an excellent Thrift Shop due to the wide variety of well-priced items situated throughout the store. Options here range from clothing to books to electronics and all other kinds of doodads you can and cannot imagine. The store is kept extremely clean and the staff here are very kind and friendly. I visit my best friend that lives right across from this little thrift store at least once every 2-3 months. I've taken to making this a absolute must go to spot. And funny enough, I've never purchased anything here. The young man that works here is incredibly friendly and has even made friends with my bestie. He's always smiling and ready to offer up a good chat. There really is a very wide selection in such a tiny space. From shoes, belts, dresses, to a large section of books. What more could someone ask for from a thrift store? Well, maybe cheaper prices. Last time I was in town, I found the cutest pair of (rather worn in) heels, the price tag? $20. I couldn't bring myself to spend that much on second hand shoes. The clothes don't smell weird or have your typical used air hanging over them. Books and DVDs are less and they have a decent selection as well. The guys running it are friendly and are eager to help you find something if they've got it. I like this thrift store. The cashier (guy) is pretty friendly and engaging. There is a big winter accessory section with almost new Thinsulate and cute glittens. Of course, I snagged myself a pair. If you can get over the fact that someone has worn your clothes at one point, then this is the place for you. It has some modestly known brand names like 7 for all mankind jeans, banana republic, gap, etc. There are VHS players, random household items/decorations, tote bags, a small book collection, and a big coat/jacket selection. I've been in here 5 or 6 times, and I've been able to find decent women's clothing for not very much money. (Certainly cheaper than the Buffalo Exchange down the street.) The glass dishes and goblets aren't my style, and I haven't found the purses to be very promising, but hit-or-miss is par for the course with thrift stores. I haven't had issues with the staff, though they certainly won't win awards for customer service. The guy who's rung me up each time is usually talking on the phone on his headset, and another guy there made a comment to me once as I was leaving. Luckily, I couldn't hear what he said. :) If you're looking for no frills, fairly affordable second-hand clothing, this is a good choice. Although I haven't spent enough time in thrift shops to be a perfect judge, I do think that this one is one of the better ones I've seen. Everything just feels clean- the space is open, it doesn't feel crowded and stressful like most thrift shops (which is why I typically avoid them- I get nervous around large groups of people rummaging through clothing) I got a cute dress, tags still on it, from forever21 for $12.
