I am a big fan of Dive Bar, a great neighborhood bar that offers a wide variety of draft and bottle beers at a very reasonable price. They always offer $10 pitchers of Bud Light which is a good thing. The fish tacos are pretty good as are most sandwiches. The crowd is laid back and unpretentious. read more

It's just another American-style bar with enough TV screens showing the Yankees game that it could count as a sports bar if a larger fraction of patrons were watching them. generic local dive with a sports slant was poppin on a Wednesday night. one differentiating factor was an attentive bartender who served from around the bar (as opposed to from behind) and was sharp with the Irish whiskey I ordered. Most of the bars in the neighborhood are pretty similar to Dive Bar (one of them is actually another Dive Bar, just a few blocks north on Broadway), but of all the sports bars/dive bars/beer bars in the area, this is my favorite. They have a constantly changing beer menu, which is pretty extensive. The food can be pricey, but it's great bar food. I highly recommend the wings and the Bond Burger with chorizo. They have a pretty solid lunch special as well. Every Sunday during football season you can expect the bar to be packed with fans and jerseys, and you'd be surprised at how many aren't rooting for the Jets or Giants. It's the best place in the neighborhood to catch a game. read more

I have been frequenting The Dive Bar since it opened many years ago. Yes, it's name is a play on words given than one of the owners also is a partner in a NYC scuba diving shop. Amazing selection of beer & various hard spirits, especially single malt scotch. It can get crowded on weekends but still, it is a great neighborhood joint! read more

I loveeeee this place. My co-workers and I come here all the time because we work right down the block as waiters also and we have super good relationships with kate, randall, eric, and amelia. I recently had a bad experience with the african american woman (bartender) (not so friendly, ever actually) and the older dude that works early wednesdays. A bit of a misleading name. The term Dive Bar implies that the setting is going to look less than desirable, and that it may be a destination for those looking to drink cheap beer in the dark. This is in no way a dive bar, it's a sports bar. It's a decent bar with good lighting, tons of TVs, a solid beer list and general bar food. If you are looking for a bar with bar food this is your spot. If you're looking for a dimly lit joint with an old bartender who loves to say "back in my day.." This is not your spot. read more

This my favorite local hangout when I'm in the city. The food is awesome (try the wings, mussels and mac 'n cheese). The best bartenders and wait staff and most fun party place imaginable. I eat and drink here regularly and everything is really good but I realized my prior review was outdated. I'm keeping the 5 star rating, but I'd be lying if I said it was not at least partly based on the memory of the Belgian Thai Wings which left the menu. If anyone has had them, you know what I'm talking about. As I sit here in the office thinking its probably too late for coffee and yet too early to drink, I still hold onto the lingering hope that one day, maybe, somehow I will see those wings again and everything in life will be better again... sigh...tear... crying Jordan face. read more

Probably my favorite neighborhood bar in NY. It's been years since I lived in the UWS, yet I still find myself here at least once a month for Tuesday night trivia or Sunday football. The daft list is extensive and always features a handful of local IPAs from the likes of Other Half, Industrial Arts, and Barrier. Food is top-notch bar grub and the blackened salmon sandwich is reliably fantastic. Look out for Olivia and Sarah -- two gems behind the bar -- and keep an eye on the specials list for occasional curveballs like cricket tacos. read more

excellent beer selection! I would guess about 25 beers on tap. The food all looked good - we only had the vegetarian cheese and gravy fries which were actually very tastey. Only bad thing was the service. The first bartender was kinda aloof but totally fine. His shift ended and a woman with long braids and a ski cap came on and she was full of attitude. I have no idea what her problem was but she definitely had one. I was there with 2 friends and we all agreed when we left she was the only bad thing about the place. The crowd was pretty cool....mixed ages and you could tell this place has its regular crowd which i think is nice. We weren't there to watch a game but they have a lot of flat screens you can see from all angles. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE the Dive Bar - it's a perfectly unpretentious, casual bar with a warm neighborhood feel. Fantastic beer selection, great food too! The spanish grilled cheese is a personal fav. Bartenders Eric and Jenny are fantastic. The music really depends on who's at the jukebox, but is largely enjoyable. The only thing I would change about Dive is that there are no hooks under the bar! Not the end of the world, but would make many of us chicks very happy! read more

I tried Dive Bar because of the Scout Mob discount. - scout mob is an app that give you discounts on restaurants and stores in the city by showing the coupon when you are ready to pay. No need to buy or print anything! This is a neighborhood bar with a good food reputation online. My husband and I enjoyed the wings (very large, juicy and great if unusual sauce), pigs in a blanket and a pulled pork sandwich with fries. I found the pork sandwich too porky but my husband loved it. The fries were a bit potatoey for him but I loved them! The wings and pigs in a blanket were excellent and will ensure future visits. We had great speedy service as well. We're not big drinkers or beer drinkers in general so no opinions on booze. I am so glad that I had the scout mob app to encourage us to stop here and try it. Pretty great tuna sandwich (called Mary Ryan) which was a tuna steak on whole grain bread with sprouts, lettuce, tomato and wasabi mayo on the side. I know a few other people have cleared up why this place is called Dive Bar (there is a diving theme to the place) but I still feel the need to comment on the reviewers who are this weird breed of snob: the dive bar snob. I will postulate that if you are one of these so called dive bar snobs then you have never been to a dive bar. If you've never been offered a bump of cocaine and the opportunity to buy a firearm in a bathroom at 3am then you have never been to a dive bar, mmm-k? I think it is eminently fucking obvious that a bar with a giant neon sign of a fucking dive helmet with fucking bubbles and is called the fucking Dive Bar is MAKING A FUCKING PLAY ON WORDS!! Now, on to the other snobs - the anti UWS snobs who say things like (in the voice of Thurston Howell the 3rd) "well, I suppose this must rawther be the Upper West Side version of a dive bar, eh what, harumph harumph?" Yes, I know you were able to survive the Mars Bar that one time you visited from Carroll Gardens without getting mouth raped, but let's cut the tough guy schtick. The UWS is vast: 59th Street to 110th Street, park to park. So really, the Upper West is three neighborhoods - extremely wealthy from 59th to 72nd, esp on the eastern side over to CPW, sort of classic yuppie from 72nd to 89th and from 89th to 110th a transition into Harlem, with a ton of diversity and even a bit of funk. The Dive Bar caters to that segment. A typical after work happy hour will find the bar packed with its regulars and semi- regulars, all chattering to each other about their days. These folks will range in age from college aged to well past retired and will range through all races and ethnicitys. Not a more diverse after work happy hour to be found in Manhattan. Great list of single malts and odd and obscure whiskeys, a great selection of beers complete with local craft brewers sponsoring tastings etc. Agreed that the bartenders can be hit or miss as the place does get crowded. A great place to have as your neighborhood local as long as you don't get caught up in dive bar semantics and reverse neighborhood snobbery. read more

I work in the service industry and I know that a customer is, by its very nature, a vile and detestable thing, especially at the end of a long day of brunches and sports games and pointless awards shows. I know that it's a privilege to be able to go out and have someone else feed me, but there are a lot of bars/alehouses/gastropubs exactly like this one, especially on the Upper West Side, and this is the only one that I have ever left with the lingering sense that I have done something wrong. I've come here sporadically over the past few years, and while the food is always on point and the service in line with the relaxed atmosphere, I've had a couple of strange experiences recently that feel worth sharing. The first time, about a month ago, I have to admit that I was not a perfect customer. My group took a long time to order because we were waiting for a third person who then needed a few minutes to peruse the very extensive beer menu, and then we ordered individual dishes as we finished them instead of all at once. We were there for quite a while (we had a lot of catching up to do!), and the waitress was pressuring us to settle the bill before the end of her shift despite the fact that we were all clearly covered in wing sauce and not quite ready to go fishing into our purses and pockets.I know why this happened and I feel bad that she felt compelled to wait for us, and I would have never given it a second thought were it not for my more recent visit. This time we ordered quickly and were served promptly, but then left hanging once we were done eating. My friend and I had one drink each and some (very tasty) pulled pork sliders. We then ordered water with vague intentions of getting another drink but then no one ever came back to clear our plates or ask if we needed anything. After about a half hour of waiting I eventually approached the bar and said I needed to pay. I may have sounded a bit exasperated but I genuinely thought our waitress might have ended her shift after what had happened the last time. This was not the case because our waitress, who was sitting at a table nearby popped up and said "Sorry, no one ever asked for the check. I kept looking over but you were talking to each other." At first I believed that it was my fault (customers are rarely right. I don't mean that sarcastically). Didn't I read once that when done eating, one must cross their knife and fork and rest them on one's plate in order to indicate completion? Were we meant to fall silent and offer a special salute? I quickly remembered that I eat out about once a week in similar establishments and have somehow always avoided this problem so I decided to forgive myself for whatever it is that I had done. The feeling of inadequacy has clearly followed me home though (which I know says more about me than about anything else), and I feel weirdly afraid to go back because it felt so oddly confrontational. read more

This bar had an amazing beer selection. I was overwhelmed with choice--in a good way! Howie was able to help me decide between a few and we loved all of the drafts.
