One of my favorite Indian restaurants. Service is very good, clean, and great view. Been here 2-3 times now and food has always been great. Recommended dish: shai paneer (they call it something else though fail) just ask for this and they'll make it haha Malai kofta was also very good, I'm not a huge fan of having nuts mixed in with my food but it was actually really good. Chicken tikka masala: personally I am a vegetarian but when I came here with my friends they got it and they all loved it. Can't forget the garlic naan and rice too! So good. This was the first time I've been to this restaurant and I give it a 15/10!!! The service was amazing. They kept checking on us making sure we were enjoying our food, and let me tell you.... we were enjoying it a lot!!!! Everything we ordered was incredible including the garlic naan and hummus, channa masala, and so much more. My younger sister does not like Indian food but left the restaurant raving about it. She was obsessed with the channa masala especially, as was I. I have been a vegetarian for about 8 years now and it isn't always easy to find something I like at a restaurant. However, Diwan has an extensive vegetarian/vegan menu and I was very pleased. Additionally, the staff is so nice and wholesome. I can't believe it's taken me this long to come here! Been here a few times now with my husband. Butter chicken is INCREDIBLE. Had always been littleee pricey but very good Indian food so it feels worth it, BUT now they actually offer a GREAT deal if you do the taco Tuesday at Loco (it's like the new Mexican food portion of the restaurant). We just recently tried some of the tacos with Indian flavors like chicken tikka, and they were honestly delicious. And so different than anything I've had before. I've been here a handful of times, and every time, my experience has been different. The last time I came here, the lunch buffet was on point and everything tasted good. The time prior to that, everything in the buffet tasted dry and stale as if the food was out there for a couple of days. The lake view is nice and so is the décor. The service normally is pretty bad. A little far from manhattan, but OH EM GEE, best indian buffet I've had! (not to mention the nice view of the lake...) I'm not really the kind of person who craves indian food, but after i had diwan, I kept on craving it and have yet to find a place to satisfy my craving. The lunch buffet was upstairs and there was a huge variety of food.. LOTS of curries, including shrimp, goat, and chicken. The saag paneer was the best I've had.. well-seasoned and SUPER creamy. Our server Ellsberg not only helped accommodate my vegan and gluten-free diet, but even went into the kitchen and had a special appetizer made up for me! Came to this Port Washington location after years of enjoying their other one. I will admit, I do like the Hicksville location better. The decor is much nicer here but the food, though good, wasn't the same. Much milder in terms of heat and their lunch buffet offers a few less items I look forward to. Standouts include the daal and the baingan bharta which are delicious. Tandoori chicken was under marinated and blah and the tikka masala and rogan josh lacked some spices. Service is a bit cold here and prices are higher than expected. Lunch buffet for two of us with a drink each was $50!! They add a 20% service charge to the bill. A practice more common in Europe than here but, what ever. Think I'll stick with the Hicksville location. read more

Went here for the lunch buffet one afternoon. The food was fresh, tasty and the buffet offered a nice variety of your traditional Indian dishes. Love the array of colors to the eye and array of spices on the palate. The rice and Indian breads were delectable. This meal was definitely a treat to the tastebuds. The buffet was kept clean and in order. Restaurant is a nice nice, tables not too close to one another and some tables have a view of the bay. There is a large parking lot. The owner is very warm and welcoming. Went up for two servings and really got my fill of delicious Indian food! Probably the best Indian restaurant on Long Island! read more

The food was good but not great for the price. We ordered a lamb vindaloo and a lamb rogan Josh. Both were good but lacked in a thicker curry consistency, for the price I would expect a better quality curry than a watery one. It did the job but I will not be going back which was a shame, was hoping it would be my new Indian spot to visit. read more

I had dinner with friends at Diwan last night. I have to say I will never eat there again. Considering the mediocre quality, thankfully small portions, and high prices I can not reccomend this restaurant. We all suspected some food was recycled from the lunch buffet, drinks were small and watered down - even the mango lassi, and items that should have been offered as condiments are $7 or $8 each. Thankfully, they have a good baker - The several versions of naan bread we ordered was well made, so at least we didn't leave hungry . On the way out we were asked by the matron, "How was the food?" Went to Diwan recently with two friends one evening, excited to eat at this restaurant which I have passed for years and never tried. Was surprised there were so few customers, considering it was so highly rated on YELP and it was a Thursday! By the end of the meal I could see why. First the positives: the service was helpful and attentive and friendly. The price for a bottle of wine ($20 for Cabernet) was excellent. The appetizer was recommended and was very good - Aloo Tikki. But the main meal was a disappointment. The Chicken Tikki Masala was dry and tough. The sauce was fine, not great, but the chicken to me was inedible. The Aloo Gobi (cauliflower and potatoes) had a strong flavor that I didn't like at all. The Aloo Paratha was so greasy I took one nibble and didn't want to touch it again. My two friends and I shared all of the meal, and in the end we barely made a dent in the plates, not because of huge servings (they weren't) but because we didn't like the food. If not for the lovely ambiance and the friendly service it would get one star. read more

Diwan has always been my go to for an elegant sit down Indian restaurant. Located in Port Washington with a seaside view , its atmosphere is both inviting and cozy which several Indian restaurants do not offer. The food is always prepared to liking. Due to a very diverse area, the buffet tries to cater to the locals but with homage to Indian traditional dishes. However I feel when ordering off the menu itself, it's more preferred for those of Indian decent as the spices and flavors are intensified to fit the guest. We loved their catering for many weddings and excited to use them as well. Bobby is so compassionate and considerate and has been doing this since 1982, definitely go with Diwan! read more

I can not make myself any clearer, Diwan in Port Washington is the best indian food on Long Island. No Contest. I have eaten at every place you can imagine, and Diwan is just out of everyone's league. 5 Stars All the way. Here's how I judge an indian restaurant: Rice. Soup. Bhel puri (if they have it), Mango Lassi, Tikka Masala, and Lamb Korma. Diwan rocked every one of those dishes. Their default rice dish is pea pulao, its incredibly good. Basmati rice, with yellow grain rice and peas... MMMMM. The Korma and Tikka Masala were cooked with incredible care, crisp, moist, and the sauces were incredible. Huge portions too. Best of both i've had. The Mango Lassi was sweet, tangy, and PERFECT. I had to cup the top of the glass because the noise from sucking through the straw irritated our neighbors. They didn't have bhel puri on the menu, butttt the owner of the restaurant told the chef (also the owner) that I wanted it, and he made me a dish called pandi puri, which is one of my favorite indian appetizers... mmmmm mmmm. Heres where things get even better. Diwan's mulligatawny soup was incredible. Creamy, amazing consistency, topped with rice and coriander... other indian restaurants, this is the soup to copy... it's AMAZING. The Naan was warm, and smelled incredible from 10 feet away. Diwan was originally in port washington about 12 years ago, not sure where it went, but now its back and better than ever! Thank you for coming back!!!!!!!! One comment: ADD bhel puri to the menu! I'm going to start this review by letting you know I'm Indian and I've been eating Indian food for the last 34 years of my life. So take that as you will and here goes... The usual indian staples are fantastic: Chicken Tikka Masala, Paneer dishes, Kofta dishes, Kebabs...all good. I've visited many Indian restaurants throughout Long Island and been dissapointed with the quality of the meat, or the preparation of the vegetables or the amount of oil the food is covered in. Diwan consistently raises the bar in all areas. Combined with friendly staff and a great location, hopefully Diwan can not only survive but flourish where others in it's place have failed. Most Indian restaurants are judged on the quality of their chicken tikka masala and I can hoestly say this is the best I've had in New York (apart from my wife's...obviously!!) My last meal: Chicken Tikka Masala, Daal Tadka (Daal Diwan), Rice, Naan The prices are certainly on the higher side, but I'm certain they've got an enormous monthly rent payment or mortgage and who minds paying more for good food?! Best Indian food I have ever had in my entire life!! I'm visiting from out of town was completely blown away by my experience at Diwan this evening. The location is exceptional over looking the water and you can get a great view from any seat in the restaurant. Upon arrival I was seated promptly by a friendly greeter. I enjoyed every course of this dinner. I highly recommend the samosas, chicken tikka masala, lamb saag, and rasmali. Something unique I've never had before was the cauliflower manchurian, the combination of spicy and sweet was flavorful and creative. Service was quick, fast, and friendly. The restaurant itself was busy and clean. Parking was convenient. Will definitely be visiting when I return to New York. read more

I stayed away from Diwan in the city due to the health code violations which I always read about, but having heard rave reviews from my soon to be in laws about the Port Washington location, my fiance and I decided to give it a try when we were invited. It's a large restaurant overlooking the water--so big in fact that I think they have banquet facilities. Check that out though if you're interested as I'm not too sure. On a Sunday evening, they were open at 5:30 and the place quickly filled up. Service was good and portions were a nice size. We did have 2 children with us under the age of 5 so if you do have children, they're welcome but as it is a large space, their little voices at high volumes will carry! ;) The pappadam was better than I've had at most restaurants and the mint chutney, spicy. The chaat papri was filled with onions and tomatoes; no potatoes found in this dish, but the flavor that I always love in a good chaat papri was there. My in laws ordered a number of vegetable curries which were rather tasty: tandoori vegetables, bagin bartha, and dal. I liked both the vegetables and the bagin bartha very much, but I'll pass on the dal. I'm just not a dal lover---what can I say. My channa masala was good---not the best I've ever had, but okay. I have to say that after sampling the aforementioned, I was expecting to like it a lot more. My fiance liked his chicken tikka, saying it was "juicy", but my father in law to be's tandoor chicken was a bit dry. On the whole, everyone was satisfied. I was a bit surprised by the butteriness of the onion kulcha and garlic naan. I didn't want to eat it lest my arteries scream. read more

If you want superbly delicious indian food with the right balance of herbs and spices (not over powering like some other places) you have to try this place. I suggest the chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, jasmine rice, mutter paneer (vegetarian) and samosas. Have some desert too, the gulab jamun is yum.
