Location location location. Jia finds its "jia" in Port and serves its specific clientele befittingly well. Clean restaurant, dishes are presented precisely and attractively. We went for dinner and the loud party music absolutely did not fit the calm, natural interior decor. In fact, the music was irritating and confusing when the decor looks more zen-like. Not sure what they're going for there. Service was not very attentive either. No one ever asked how our food was or if we needed anything. Water cup was left empty often. So then am I paying for some magical taste in these dishes? Because the prices are double that of some excellent Chinese options not only in Queens, but even Long Island. Again, all the dishes were presented very well, but if I ate blindfolded I would not have noticed anything truly amazing. Lamb potstickers were good, but could use some more cumin and spice. Seafood fried rice had hot chilli peppers in it - why?? Also may want to warn customers of this since families with young kids ordering rice/noodles may be ordering for kids who don't eat spicy food (not indicated on menu). Shanghai soup dumpling were...unusual. Adding a goji berry on top is a little gimmicky, but we all hated the mushy filling. The meat falls apart inside the dumpling and perhaps that's what they're going for? I also suspect there is a lot of msg and salt being used. The duck was delicious cooked, cut perfectly and presented nicely. A warning about the cranberry sauce - if you have it during Thanksgiving, great go for it. If you don't like cranberry sauce during Thanksgiving, don't even bother with it here. Duck is not turkey (what an insult that would be to compare the two) but I'm guessing that's where the idea for cranberry sauce came from. In the end, it felt like westernised cuisine masquerading as Chinese food. (My family wanted to give Jia 2 stars - they never want to go back, but I'm feeling generous :P) My star rating legend: 5: A+ Worth a special journey (ie. This is a solid dinner option in Port Washington we frequent. Table service is always great and the space is very clean and fresh. It's a cute spot for date night or a casual celebration. Food wise, I can tell the chefs here are very experienced. Their duck is fantastic and during restaurant week they had an amazing menu offering. Very playful with textures and sauce combinations. The only occasional miss is the seafood -- not always the freshest. The restaurant is small, with large windows and loads of natural light; created a really welcoming space. The food was very good. Highlights included moonlight dumplings, peking duck and tuna tartar. Popular smallish Asian grey-painted restaurant (for maybe 4-5 dozen) on a Saturday night with a very small parking lot, a makeshift entrance with stairs, no waiting area, so you're squashed against the front door unless there's an open stool at the bar for 3-4 ... happily that was only five minutes before being seated ... servers passing back and forth in front of us from the kitchen to the tables. It was a project getting a reservation. On the other hand, the food was great. My wife said, "this is the first time I've enjoyed Chinese food in years." Part of this rare (for us bridge and tunnel bumpkins from Long Island) dining experience was that lots of what we ordered seemed unique, like the NYC Pastrami Egg Roll. Like all the food there, it was brought out hot, as soon as it was cooked, and the four of us shared it ("family style") until the next dish arrived. It was a fresh and scrumptious, oversized egg roll with lean pastrami and maybe a little cabbage. It came with sauce on the side, but it was so tasty by itself, I didn't try it. Look how pretty the gold laced pink crystal shrimp dumplings are! A server assured us the gold was edible. The Peking Duck noodles (with scallions, bean sprouts and chow fun noodles) was less than one third the price of their Whole Peking Duck and got the nod. The duck was well-cooked, soft, not greasy (!), and mixed well with the noodles and veggies. (Again, I didn't feel like it needed dipping sauce.) Also sampled the BBQ Beef Fried Rice and the meat was good quality, plus the brown rice and mixed veggies were a good fit. My wife enjoyed their Buddha's Delight - it didn't have the marinated veggies you often get in take out places and included some novel ingredients, like "lotus wheels." So this dumpling spot in Port Washington is definitely not your average Asian dumpling restaurant, it's a bit on the high-end side, you only get four dumplings for $17 and probably one of the most expensive but delicious eggrolls I've ever had, service was excellent, the food is also excellent But it's very expensive. My only issue was not with the food but with the eight dollar iced tea which is a way over priced no matter where you've had ice tea before, I've told my friends about this place,, even though the food is very gourmet and high-end. The staff and service here is excellent. When you first arrive, the building seems old and worn. Black building, but when you open the door you aré greeted to a beautiful white walled birch wood decor. Warning, the dishes turn are a bit pricy but the food here is top turn left notch. I love the dish ware. In fact so much that I'm considering on buying them. All the food was fresh and flavorful. I've heard about this Cantonese restaurant on Long Island for a while and have been itching to try it out. Finding the restaurant wasn't easy, as their signage was small and inconspicuous. We circled around twice before finally spotting it tucked away next to a car wash, in a black building with plenty of parking spaces. The interior of the restaurant was brightly lit and decorated with a trendy, artsy flair. At first glance, you wouldn't guess it was a Cantonese restaurant, but given its location in Long Island and the fusion dishes on the menu, it all made sense. We arrived during an off-peak hour, so we were seated immediately (reservations can be made on Resy). There were only two or three other tables occupied, which made for a comfortable dining environment. The servers brought out a complimentary plate of crispy wonton skins with sweet sauce (clearly catering to American tastes), which were deliciously crispy without being too greasy. Now, on to the food: The Xiao Long Bao ($16) were some of the best I've had in New York in recent years. The skin was thin and delicate, and the broth was rich and flavorful. Each dumpling was topped with a single goji berry, which the xiao long bao made for a perfect pairing with soy sauce, vinegar, and ginger. The Dim Sum Platter ($16) included four types of dumplings, two pieces of each: crystal shrimp dumplings, siu mai, tricolor dumplings, and vegetable potstickers. The first two were traditional, filled with plump and juicy shrimp, while the latter two incorporated more fusion elements. All the dumplings had a nice texture and bite. Finally, the Beijing Roast Duck ($89) was a must-try. It wasn't listed on the dine-in menu, only on the take-out menu, which made it feel like a hidden gem. The whole duck was brought and carved to the table. The meat was wrapped in thin, crepe-like pancakes and paired with the classic sweet sauce, as well as a unique cranberry sauce that the restaurant provides for American diners who like to pair it with turkey. The dish was truly outstanding. I didn't have high expectations going in, but the food was absolutely amazing. For Cantonese dim sum that caters to American tastes, this restaurant did not disappoint. The prices were on the more premium end, but the quality of the food and the overall experience made it well worth it. Decided on lunch with friends today and they suggested this place. It's located next to a car wash which is strange but once inside, the space is clean and bright with a beautiful view of the water. The dishes are all upscale dim sum at probably more than double the price of their counterparts at a regular Chinese restaurant. They are beautifully presented and were for the most part tasty. I went to Jia with my friend yesterday, and the first thing I noticed was that the table was so sticky that I couldn't even move my plate. I asked a waitress to clean the table, and she said the table was "DESIGNED to be like this." I'm not sure why a table would be "designed to be" sticky, but I spilled my drink because it was hard to move my glass. No one cleaned the table afterward. As an Asian, I always do my best to support Asian-owned restaurants, but the service at Jia is below average and very disappointing.
