The Dixie Grill is located in the historic downtown area of Live Oak, Florida. We arrived at 1:15 p.m. on a Sunday. I believe they close at 2 p.m. We found parking, but the restaurant was full and was on a 10 minute wait for a table. I suppose that's the mark of a good, well-loved restaurant...that people are waiting to stand in line for a table! The wait was brief. On Sundays The Dixie Grill appears to host quite an after church crowd. This was our second such visit in the past 6 months. On our previous visit, my dining companion ordered The Fletch, which is NOT on the menu. A previous Yelper had reviewed the restaurant and mentioned it. My dining companion was intrigued and had to try it. You have to ask for it. It's a mac and cheese waffle, topped with a fried chicken breast, topped with flash-fried spinach and served with brown butter strawberry buffalo sauce. The plate presentation is eye catching with all the colorful components! It sounds weird, but for my dining companion who seeks out chicken and waffle entrees, this was enough to entice him. It was interesting, tasty and filling, but when a server passed by with a plate of fried chicken destined for another table, he looked longingly as that plate passed his gaze. We knew he would be ordering the fried chicken plate on this trip. We were seated and our server promptly greeted us and took our order. We had reviewed the menu in advance and knew what we were ordering. The fried chicken platter is $12.00 (white) and comes with two sides. In this case, my companion chose green beans and mashed potatoes. The plate also came with a roll or bread item of choice. The meal is filling and there was enough to take home half for lunch the next day. I ordered the chicken tender dinner for $13.00, which also came with two sides and a bread item. I chose mac and cheese and cole slaw. The mac and cheese was good. I don't care for the overly creamy cheese that loses the cheese flavor. This mac and cheese appeared to be the baked casserole type and I liked it! There were four chicken tenders served with honey mustard on the side. Both the fried chicken and chicken tenders are prepared with a batter that stays ON the chicken pieces when fried. Whatever it is, it's totally delicious. The green beans were steamed and served with pieces of diced bacon. Again, wonderful. My companion ordered a roll, which was soft and served with butter on the side. I ordered the hush puppies, served as a duo and fried, but still soft on the inside. If you haven't overeaten, I recommend you save room for dessert. The coconut cream pie is delightful and ample enough for two to share. The menu options are decidedly southern and a hearty meal for anyone with an appetite. The service staff are friendly, cordial and accommodating. We do like visiting Live Oak on Sundays and many of their local restaurants are closed on Sundays. The Dixie Grill is open on Sundays and this is a fantastic option for a breakfast, brunch or lunch! read more

My husband found Dixie Grill online as he was checking for nearby breakfast spots while we are traveling through the area and we decided to try it. I started off with a delicious caramel nitro brew coffee and even had to take one for the road! We definitely got our money's worth for our meal because portions were huge and it was delicious. It's a cute diner with home style, Southern cooking and friendly service. Our drinks never ran dry, but our waitress wasn't hovering. The decor is farm house chic and the restaurant has lots of seating. I had a sweet tea and a club sandwich. My fiance got the biscuits and gravy and a Nettles link sausage. The sweet tea was perfectly sweet and the club was a nice double decker with crispy bacon. The biscuits and gravy was nothing special, but the sausage was perfectly cooked with a crispy casing. A good place to eat after church Sunday. I ate here twice recently while visiting family. The food was typical of a small town diner. The fried chicken is over breaded, but the fried okra is good. My bill alone was $17 without tip for an underwhelming meal. Menu stated $8 for the belt buster...I was up-charged for things that were advertised/included in description (shredded potato) AND for cheese that I asked server to exclude. While pancakes were big, they didn't taste fresh plus the texture wasn't fluffy - like they were old and put on a skillet (again). A group of us wanted breakfast and decided to stop here and give it a try. Upon coming, I had read the reviews but went against the grain and still came. We were seated immediately to a dirty table. We watched many of the wait staff go by without an acknowledgement till one in our party asked for a rag. We finally got a waitress that was very good and polite willing to do what she could to smooth the onset over. We all ordered breakfast. We never went empty with coffee, but started hearing from surrounding tables how long people were waiting for their food. So needless to say, we were starting to worry as our food was taking pretty long to get out. The owner came over and we inquired about our food with anticipation of leaving if it wasn't started and paying only for our drinks. The owner came out with our food. We all got the food we ordered and cooked the way we asked. It was rather bland though, but that is a personal opinion. Took a much needed road trip through the panhandle. Found this place via Yelp. I had originally wanted lunch, however I saw this on a nearby table and changed my mind. I was out to get groceries today and thought I'd stop someplace for lunch, and I really wanted breakfast for lunch. Decided to go to Dixie Grill and give them another try. We waited at the door a few minutes to be seated because the person accepting payment is the same person that seats Patrons. That was OK. We were seated in the table and given menus. That's the last time we had any interaction with any employee for 14 minutes. The couple that came in after us received their drinks and placed their orders. We saw dining room workers all around us, but couldn't get their attention because they were moving tables and wiping off tables and then going back into the kitchen. After waiting 14 minutes we decided to leave. I stopped by the front desk to voice my concern. She was very friendly and asked if I'd like to speak to a manager, and I declined, but told her that she should tell the manager. This was unacceptable service. I know I'm not a regular, but treat me like I'm a paying customer. I've been here a couple times before and the food is good, but every time, except for one, the service is not up to par for the prices you pay. Pancakes were burnt and burnt side was faced down. i had to go locate syrup because we waited for our waitress several minutes to no avail and the food was getting cold. After everyone, but my 7 year old who ordered the cinnamon roll, received their food, the waitress informed us that it would be another 10 mins on the roll because they had run out. After we all finished eating, the roll came WITHOUT the icing and she set down in front of us like that's how it came... no icing. Gosh ~ I feel awful writing this review because our waitress was super sweet and the menu shows that someone is hugely creative. BUT, we had the BLT/Pimento Sandwich and it was just Bacon and Melted Cheese on toasted white bread. For some reason, it sounded much more appealing in the description. The other sandwich was the Fried Green Tomato and Bacon...and it was a wee bit better. I was also surprised that the sandwiches did not come with fruit or coleslaw...if not fries or chips. It was just a sandwich on toasted white bread...no fanfare whatsoever. I was also surprised by the decor/setting. The website is rather cheery and upbeat, so I envisioned this charmingly lit place with lots of natural light and warm woods. NOT! This is a rather dated, sorta musty, place with absolutely no charm. Last, despite indications otherwise, we were talked into dessert. The Lemon Pie was a miss...bland meringue and the crust was squishy like it had been sitting for some time. The Dixie Grill is an institution in Live Oak...been there a long time. I have only eaten breakfast there, but the food was great, service was quick, and prices were very reasonable. Try the thin sliced breakfast potatoes -- they are like thick cut potato chips. Yum. read more

It's high time for an update regarding the Dixie Grill & Steer Room. They've apparently in the last three years or so hired a new chef named Robbie and he's made a fair number of changes to their menu, infusing more of a New Southern flair to it. The result is overall successful but there are some rough edges here and there, or more specifically, there is the issue that the restaurant seems to have too many identities and a few issues with staff that could use fine-tuning. As I've noted before, there is the grill part of the restaurant which comes across as a favorite old diner perfect for breakfast or lunch--this is where you enter the restaurant--and then there is the fabled Steer Room in the back which was began I guess as a nice steakhouse for supper-time. You can sit in either and get the same menu, and now that menu has a focus on old Southern favorites still but with a greater gravitas and an eye to the type of twists we've seen in the past decade in New Southern cuisine. I had the "Squirrel Fishin'" which is catfish encrusted in a pecan breading and fried, served with grits and a tomato gravy and two hushpuppies. Like most of the dinner plates, it comes with one trip to their salad bar which is worthwhile to grab some of their homemade coleslaw as it's very good and perfect alongside the catfish. I have a strong disdain for salad bars in general but in the South on occasion you can find some great coleslaw and/or potato salad on them. The catfish was cooked in a manner oft used for trout and done so exceptionally it worked just as well for the humble catfish and was delicious. The grits were also good, as was the gravy, and the hushpuppies turned out to be cornbread-based and unusual yet good. Overall, it was a great meal that lived up to the chef's professed goal of New Southern cuisine and I was impressed. Based on this, I had the lemon pie for dessert, which sadly didn't measure up to the caliber of the dinner at all: too sweet, too dense, and yet lacking enough lemon flavor. It possibly was made with Meyer lemons which impart a different flavor, I don't know, but I was not happy with it. Also, the waitress was not the best. She was young so I forgive her, maybe she's new, but she seemed scattered and did not check on me at all during dinner, then brought the check, didn't ask if I wanted dessert, but did (thankfully) refill my iced tea. I don't like waitstaff to hover, but they need to turn up about three to five minutes after the diner has his food to see how he likes it, and she didn't. They also need to ask if patrons desire dessert, especially when the restaurant has about seven desserts and brags about them on the menu. The owner was around and came over to chat and she was very nice and we talked about other restaurants and businesses in the area and diving to Crystal River and such. She was so sweet I didn't have the heart to complain about the waitress--or the pie. All in all, it was good food. The owner recommends the bread pudding and the coconut cream pie which have both been longstanding staples of the restaurant. I will have one or the other next time. The catfish was great and there are other menu items that look very promising. I will come again, but I wish the experience had been totally stellar because I think they could accomplish that. read more
