Sometimes you walk into small town restaurants and get the "you're not from around here" looks after the doorbell rings when you enter, but that wasn't the case at Grumpy's. We were passing through the area, on the hunt for breakfast, and were warmly greeted by the staff and patrons. It was a Tuesday around 11am and the place wasn't busy so we sat right down and were served immediately. Cute country vibes all around! My husband got the scramble with sausage and grits and ate as much as his elastic belt would allow. I got the Big Grumpy Breakfast with toast and bacon and it was all cooked perfectly. My husband went to the bathroom and left me alone /unsupervised when there was pie & cheesecake available at the register - Silly man. I got a slice of cheesecake and it did not disappoint. It was perfectly chilled, not overly sweet and had a great consistency. The only thing I'm grumpy about after leaving this place is the fact that we don't live closer. Found this place passing on our way to Daytona Beach all the way from Los Angeles. We arrived past 11am, so breakfast wasn't an option. To our surprise, the non-assuming quiche plate my partner got, and the burger bowl I got, were both delish!! The quiche was simple, but cooked to perfection. It comes with a bowl of side salad with a delicious maple balsamic dressing, a blueberry muffin, and a slice of tomato and lettuce on the plate. The quiche has a nice, homemade crust that's surprising light and just pure goodness. The burger bowl was a deconstructed burger without the bun. I got it with grilled chicken, and it was, of course, cooked to perfection. Juicy and flavorful, which is hard to achieve for most places. The salad was fresh, and the homemade Grumpy's sauce was delicious as well. The waitress was sweet. Service was on point. Price is good. Place is nicely decorated and clean. Both this place and the town of Madison has exceeded our expectations. We will for sure come back when we're around next year. read more

Traffic down to 1 lane due to an accident on the I-10 near Madison, Florida. Pulled off and went approx 1 1/2 miles into Madison, FL. Cute downtown area and lots of cool historic courthouses and stately homes. Found Grumpy's Diner and Pie Shop. Restaurant has charming decor antiques, signs and crafts. We had been hungry for a good BLT but our waiter, Elias, suggested The Mile High Club instead so we ordered Fried Pickles to start and the Mile High Club and Sweet Potao Fries to share. Pickles came out first, very hot and fresh with ranch dip but the Star was the Mile High Club! The Mile High Club had turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato and cheese, mayo AND RASPBERRY JALAPENO JAM! Just the right sweet and spice and the sandwich was delicious. The other highlight was the steak cut Sweet Potato Fries. Crisp outside and perfectly soft and sweet inside. I highly recommend both! I went out for a long ride on the motorcycle, and found myself in Madison around lunchtime. Figured it was time for a break, so tooled around town a bit looking for places to eat. Found North Florida College and rode around the campus a little, seeing the sights, then found Grumpy's in the downtown area. Approaching the place, it looks more like a cafe than a diner, but frankly these days those words get bandied around so much that they basically just mean "a place to get food". Inside I found a place to sit, and a menu appeared in my hands along with a glass of water soon after. Going through the menu, I found the usual things I would expect on a diner menu, along with some cutesy names for various plates. I went with a Grumpy Burger and fries. Had to wait an appropriate amount of time for them to make the food, and when it came out I was... well, not disappointed, but my high expectations were a bit cut short. The fries were good, but the burger... kind of disappointing. It was done in a think-burger method, but it had been overcooked and the burger patty was falling apart in my hands. No seasoning had been added to the meat either, so it was kind of bland. The wait staff were fine, and though I did observe one staff member starting out kind of sullen, as if she really didn't want to be there, she did perk up after a couple of minutes, so it may have just been those "start-of-shift" blues that happen to us all. Traveling from South Carolina to Panama City our family stopped for some local grub! So glad we stopped here! We ordered cheese curds, Grumpy's Burger, Grumpy's Cheesesteak, and Mile High Club Sandwich. The cheese curds were a delicious snack that were flavorful and nice and hot with marinara sauce. The Burger was everyone's favorite, again hot and fresh with so much flavor and spice with the jalapeños, absolutely scrumptious! We were in the area after visiting Madison Blue Springs State Park and needed to grab a bite to eat. We decided to swing by this local spot and give it a try! Inside was much smaller than expected and fairly full; however, we were still able to sit right away. Our server was incredibly kind and did a fantastic job. We ordered the burger with fried pickles and a bacon jam on it and the BLT which had a jalapeño jam on it. Both were surprisingly delicious. The burger flavors complemented each other way beyond what I would have though and the BLT flavors were very good as well. Particularly on the BLT (as the jam flavor stands out a bit more here), just make sure you are okay with sweet flavors as it is fairly strong. The BLT didn't have that much bacon on it compared to other BLTs I've had which was a bit disappointing, but the flavor was good. Had I been extremely hungry that could have been an issue but it was fine for the day and the price point was fairly low. The fries were also delicious and a great side. Overall, we had a great experience here. The service was kind and fast and the food tasty. If you're looking for a low-key local spot to try out, this is a good one! read more

We came by at the recommendation of our air bnb host. We came in and there was only one other table occupied. We sat and ordered coffee and looked over the menu. We ordered the Grumpy Scramble and Veggie omelette and had to try the homemade cinnamon roll. We did not have to wait long for the cinnamon roll. Our breakfast came out just as we ordered it. The grumpy was good with the gravy and sausage. The omelette was good along with the biscuit. We enjoyed the cinnamon roll very much with our coffee. It was soft and delicious. The waitress was very attentive and friendly. The restaurant is small quaint with pretty good food and service. They sell tshirts and jams and sauces also. We would stop by again if in the area. What a friendly little diner in Madison! We were promptly seated and greeted. The place was very clean down to the restrooms. I ordered cheese curds and the hamburger with bacon. The food was on par for a Diner. Hash brown casserole was more hash brown and cheese. I was told that it was cooked in the oven, what was served to me, never saw the oven. The bottom of the eggs were brown, which tells me that the griddle was a little hot. The French toast was delicious. Coffee is always great. We arrived at Grumpy's at 10:25 AM, we placed our order at 10:35 AM (It took us a while to decide what we wanted). When we asked about lunch we were told lunch didn't start until 11:15. Breakfast did not end until 10:45. My husband was wanting something from the lunch menu, we thought that they would start serving lunch immediately following breakfast, but that wasn't the case. We both chose from the breakfast menu. At 11:45 a group of six people walked into the restaurant, sat down and a little while later they placed an order for lunch. I questioned the waitress about it and was told that they can place the order, but it will not be put in until 11:15. They were served their lunch at 11:14. Two bites they are gone, good but definitely stingy on the serving sizes . I even heard a customer mention the lack of meat on his sandwich when the server ask him how his food was. "GOOD BUT COULDA USED MORE MEAT" I understand inflation but it's really getting ridiculous in the restaurants. Prices are $$$$ for what you get. A great tourist stop but probably frugal locals couldn't do this often (bring a 20) So I stopped in to try the lunch and gotta say the club was the flattest, smallest club I have ever had, (very thin, tasted more of the jelly than meat) they could have easily left off that third piece of bread. I had seen on the Food Network living room, restaurant impossible, and episodes with this restaurant in it. I live in Panama City Florida and I had been down to Key West and when coming back I noticed I was right there at Madison just 6 miles off the interstate so I decided to go have lunch and try it out and check it out. First of all I fell in love with the city of Madison just a cute little town with great little country stores that I went to Grumpys for lunch it looked just like what they had done with the TV show I had an impossible burger and fries, I will say it was probably one of the best burgers I've had in quite some time the fries were nice and crunchy the server Amy, was very attentive and very sweet if I lived here I would be a regular customer. This is after dinner Amy asked me if I would like some dessert do I was in the mood for some pecan pie she said she had just sold the last piece but they had some chocolate buttermilk and just plain buttermilk pie which I was pretty full anyway so I passed.
