Dixie Restaurant is a true picture of Southern charm, nestled on a cute street in Old Town Petersburg -- not far from I-95. I opted to visit for lunch en-route to North Carolina last week. It was easy to find the eatery from the highway, and parking was ample in the area. I walked inside to a local tv film crew taking b-roll of the chef making hot dogs. It turned out it was National Hot Dog Day (best holiday ever?), and the restaurant is known for their inventive dogs! How fun. They also are known for their part in the movie 'Lincoln,' which I now want to watch. After slipping in and grabbing a bar stool, a super sweet waitress immediately brought me a menu and water. Then, my assigned server came over, sat on the bar stool next to me, and chatted about good options aside from hot dogs, since I was too afraid to eat them with such a long drive ahead of me. Instead, I opted for their homemade chicken salad sandwich, no tomatoes. It came on white toast just a few minutes later, with a side of awesome chips. It didn't take me long to inhale the incredible sandwich, pay my bill (it was something like $6!!!), and head back onto the road. In fact, I realized later that I was out of there in 20 minutes' time. That made it the perfect fast but quality stop, and I always love being able to support local businesses, especially in times of traveling through new places when it would be so much easier to just pull up to a chain's drive-thru window. I'm so glad I was able to visit Dixie, and I'd recommend them to anyone who's traveling down 95 and wants a taste of top-tier comfort food. read more

Went there once and I guess it was close to quitting time for the crew but, to be fair we didn't know that. First off, waitress acted as if we were b impeding on her time. To top it off we order hotdogs and she literally reached across the bar and brought back a wiener in a bun only-- use your imagination on that one. Back at The Dixie for Chicken N Dumplins ... Thursday Special . It was like a warm hug . Delish !!! Went right in and got the last booth toward the back . So thankful , I didn't want to sit in the booth at the door ... (Brrrr Polar Vortex) Of coarse I did get called sugar by the waitress . They are all so sweet just like Southern Sugar ... Yelp pointed us to this place. Quaint little restaurant in the historic district. Quite busy around 10am on the Saturday. 5 minute wait to get seating and we ended up sitting on the covered and heated patio. We had to actually wait about 15 minutes before we asked to have a waitress come by. There were two other tables that had to ask as well, even after several staff walked by the tables without saying anything. Plenty of choices for breakfast, southern dishes as well as the normal items. Went with the three stack shortcakes, eggs, and bacon. Pancakes are absolutely delicious. Entire meal was excellent, would have done 5 stars but the service was just off today. Will definitely come back on our next visit to the area. read more

Had the best omelette in my life from here.. THE DIXIE SCRAMBLE !! Their grits are good too! For lunch I had their wing basket & it came with a side of fries & coleslaw. I wasn't a fan of the wings or the coleslaw. I did however enjoy their fried catfish basket which included fries & coleslaw as well. This is a cute little diner. I'm not onboard with the hype of this place. To me it's just average at best all around. We arrived for lunch. The food is underwhelming and everything we got was over cooked. It tastes like someone else's home cooking, just not good as your own. The service is average. Can be noisy at lunch. It is very laid back so if that's your comfort zone you'll love this place. I've been exploring the Petersburg area a lot lately. Old Town is especially charming. Finally had breakfast at Dixie and it hit the spot. The place is warm and cozy and feels like a classic diner. The waitress was a total sweetheart and service was excellent. I ordered an omelet, tall OJ, and a side of bacon. My new lady had biscuits and gravy with sausage. Ate here Thursday!!! The food was REALLY GOOD, the staff was SUPER FRIENDLY, and the prices were great!!! Even the look and feel of the place was great. It almost felt like I had been taken back to when I was a kid and my family and I drove to New Orleans, we stopped at a bunch of little hometown restaurants and this one was just like a lot of them. Our waitress knew exactly when we needed something, and the manager even took time to talk about what the 5 best songs ever written were (we ended up coming up with about 10)!!! My husband and I chose Dixie restaurant because it had good reviews. We both thought our food was okay but nothing to write home about. Over all we'd give them a 3 star review. The catfish was good except I think the oil was kinda old that they fried it in, the onion rings were okay, and the coleslaw was really good. Although Dixie has been in business many years, I never really visited growing up other than a chili dog here and there. These days there is lots of buzz about the food here and I couldn't wait to give them a try as I noticed very interesting choices on their menu. I really wanted the grits and greens so I ordered take out as they were packed and the seating is limited. The staff was super friendly and made sure I had everything I needed before leaving. Sadly, my food was very bland, my grits weren't creamy but instant, the greens were not seasoned and my corn cake was ok. We are from Virginia and I know Virginia ham and what a pancake is supposed to taste like and feel like . Will never eat at this place again. Outstanding customer service and prompt delivery. We called the day prior to request a party of 25. They don't open until 7 but we're ready to seat us a few minutes early. As soon as we sat down our service was ready to go. Phenomenal coffee that never went empty. They sat us in the covered patio as the inside is rather small. Thought it might be uncomfortable but it was not. The waitress was on the money when it came to keeping drinks filled. They MUST have brought in an extra cook or two for the morning shift because all the food came out very quickly and was very good. Don't miss out on this place.
