Took some time to go over and revisit Dixie's in Petersburg. I decided to get the omelette flight with three different omelettes that I wouldn't normally get. I tried one with a red pepper jelly on top and it was fantastic. I was greeted with some warm faces that came in and had me sit immediately. Stopped by for the first time with my little brother because this place makes the food that I don't make at home. The stuff that my waist line thanks me for not cooking, if you know what I mean... I opted for the country fried steak, mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese, brother chose the pork chop special with mashed potatoes and pickled cukes and onions. The mains were amazing. The pork chop was huge and thick and delicious, the country fried steak was so good, the gravy on both was delicious. The price was a steal. They were both amazing. The mashed potatoes were also both delicious, definitely homemade and not from a box. The baked Mac and cheese was just okay. It tasted like normal homemade Mac and cheese, nothing particularly special, but then I feel like baking it always just dries it out and sort of breaks the cheese sauce, so I would definitely skip that next time in favor of something else. The cukes were also just okay, we got it to feel like we were trying a healthier option, but will probably just splurge for something else next time. We were a little disappointed though, I do understand that this is a local restaurant and some things are harder to get and keep on the menu and keep in stock, especially if you don't want waste, but we initially tried to order corn cakes but they were out, then rolls but they were out, then went with biscuits. Then brother got the last pork chop plate. They have been out of pickle fries for "awhile now". If you aren't particularly picky about what you want to order, cool. I only particularly like cornbread/corncakes, so I was pretty bummed. The people are super friendly though, and a lot of locals seem to come by for their hotdogs (like, a LOT. Clearly we are missing something not ordering the dogs.) I'll definitely be back on days that I had a really healthy breakfast and plan on breaking my healthy streak with something fried and covered in gravy. read more

My wife, my baby boy and I went to Petersburg to visit family a couple weekends ago and we happened to stay at an Airbnb a block away from Dixie. We saw that it had great reviews, so we went for breakfast and were not disappointed. Excellent food and service, and the staff made you feel like you were at home. One of the current owners also came to our table to see how we were enjoying everything. We tried as much as we could without being gluttonous. So much food for the price and it was all delicious. Went in on a Saturday two weeks ago and was blown away. I didn't realize how well certain simple things could be done but everything provided by Amanda and the kitchen staff was amazing. Best sweet tea I've had in ages. The bacon was cooked to perfection. I had shrimp and grits while the other 4 in my group had breakfast. This is a nice, cozy cafe run by friendly people who serve up simple, tasty food. The avocado toast is delicious and the apple turnover with vanilla ice cream was to die for. I can't believe I have in town this long and had not stopped in sooner. There is apparently some sort of controversy happening that the long time locals are up in arms about concerning this cafe. I brought my Aunt and friend in for breakfast today. We sat for 41minutes waiting for simple breakfast orders. Finally when it did arrive, the eggs, ice cold, home fries cold, and sausage was so overcooked. I will never be back. Came here as a mid-stop on our way to NC to visit family. You Yelpers were accurate in your reviews! We had a very nice breakfast. We were seated quickly and got to sit in the outdoor patio which just had the heat turned on. Our waitress immediately got to us and had the Southern Charm. Our drink orders got out right away. My ham and egg biscuit sandwich with cheddar was excellent with a fluffy biscuit. The well done at my request home fries were some of the best I've had. Maybe a little on the blackened side but still very tasty. My kid's "healthy" parfait of yogurt, granola, and packed blueberries was finished in a jiffy, and the waffles and eggs my wife and other kid got also were quite nice. After several hours on the road, this hit the spot and it was easy to get to off the highway. Men's room had the movie theater sticky floor but the best sign ever. Coke products! Yeah! $52 not including tip. Friendly service. They will break $100s here! read more

The 2 of us shared 1 breakfast and had plenty. Our hash, 2 eggs and Corn Cake (biscuit substitute) breakfast was delicious. The hash was crispy brown on the outside-just as we like it. The over-easy eggs atop the hash adds to the perfect flavors. This Corn Cake thing was new for us. It's a pancake made from cornmeal instead of flour. We added syrup which was already at the table for a wonderful tasting experience. We were to early for lunch. Lunch didn't start until 11AM so we couldn't order off that menu but saw a few things we wouldn't mind trying. When an outfit is the best hotdog joint in a city, that's an item to try IMO. On my southern roadtrip through the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky I was making sure that I would be stopping at my favorite down home restaurant on the way back. I calculated my trip staying in Roanoke Rapids NC last night so I would be around the DR around breakfast. I had been thinking about their shrimp and grits since I visited there about nine months ago and couldn't wait to plow into another plate of that hot deliciousness. Since I already had my fill of coffee ( I woke around 5) I ordered the sweet tea (which is the best) along with the shrimp and grits ( the crispy bacon on top kicks it up many flavor notches ), I ordered a side of stewed apples that were just great ( like a nice slice of hot apple pie without the crust) and one of their awesome biscuits ( that pillowy little cloud of biscuit heaven is just like the rest of the food served, as good as it gets). The little girl that kept my tea glass filled was just as sweet as their tea and the waitress that took my order made me feel like a regular. If I lived in the vicinity of Petersburg I'd be hitting this place every morning. I left the DR a happy motorist and look forward to my next visit. BTW I took a balona burger with me for lunch and a large container of their most excellent beef vegetable soup in the whole world, to take home for my DW to enjoy ( I travel with a cooler) lol. read more

When I tell you that this diner hits all the high notes, I ain't just whistling Dixie!! Did you know it's been around since 1920!? Although it's changed ownership several times since its beginning, one thing that hasn't changed is the country home cooking and the friendly folks!! You walk in and you feel like family! Several people, customers and servers alike, whom I've never met, turned and greeted me "Morning!" as I walked thru the door! It's got a charming, familiar, home town feel with booths, larger tables in the back for groups, and a counter with stools. Much of the décor and some of the fixtures are original. As I eased into my booth, a few people exchanged pleasantries with me as the waitress came to get me drink order. One lady in the booth in front of me even invited a homeless man to sit with her and paid for his meal! I ordered the VA country ham steak and eggs with a couple of blueberry hot cakes! The food was so good, I just dug in and forgot to take a picture of my plate! My coffee cup was never empty! The service was superb! This adorable diner should come with its own warning: Eating here can be habit forming!! I didn't want to leave! The food here is simply amazing. I tried a variety of items to include the Dixie dog, salmon cake sandwich, deviled eggs, and fried catfish. The catfish batter is definitely not your run of the mill batter. I'm unsure if it had cornmeal in it but if it did, it definitely was not overwhelming. The greens, potato salad, black eyed peas and mac & cheese were amazing as well. Now let's discuss the customer service. I felt like I was eating at my grandma's house during a family reunion. Everyone who worked there was genuinely pleasant and that paired with the amazing food makes for a successful establishment in my eyes. This place ticked off many of the boxes that I look for in a local restaurant. Thee history and charm are second only to the wonderful food. I wish I could tell you what Sharon had but we ended up ordering the same thing so.... Anyway there is a picture on the wall similar to the angle of the picture I took while we were there and he place has not changed since the 30's or 40's (actually a much of what we saw of Petersburg seemed to be in a time capsule, in a good way. Yes its seen hard times, but looks like its heading in the right direction. The pimento cheese and the pepper jelly are home-made and the hoe cake (how I learned to call it when I visited Savannah; the waitress called t corn cake) was excellent as well. And even the coffee was good! Suffice to say that when we head up 95 on our trips north we will detour and head over to the Dixie Restaurant (Politics aside) for breakfast or lunch. People of all nationalities and social status were there and everyone was treated with respect and genuine, hospitality. I know that the name may throw some of you off but I have found that a lot of the people here have been very kind and hospit gracious towards myself and my wife. I treat people the way they treat me. And they treated us very well there. So go and check it out for yourself if you're in the area. Highly recommended. BTW, it seems like they are trying to get a night life gong as well as we saw whole sections of outdoor areas dedicated to dining, drinking, etc. also, I hear they have quite a few antique shops there as well if that's your thing. I came here for a late lunch with coworker's when we were nearby for work. We had been looking for somewhere localish to get lunch, though one of my coworker's loves to eat pancakes so she was hoping for those here. It is at the end of a row of buildings and there is parking across the street from it that is free. We were later then what was allowed for breakfast so we all ordered lunch type foods. The restaurant is longer then it is wide; basically, if it was a house it would be a row house setup. I ordered the blue cheese burger with no bun and fries. It was quite good. Though it was just a burger so somewhat on the average side of things. Everyone working there was extremely nice and helpful. I would love to say that I would be back but with not being in the area, it makes it a bit hard. 8:30am and there's a wait!! But wait...that's not a bad thing!!! That's testimony to the service and food. The atmosphere is so like family that the wait is spent chatting and meeting people. The menu goes from basic to hmmm let me try this. We went pretty basic today (basic as in something we could have cooked at home but for some reason it's sooo much better coming out to get it). If you're down here, stop in and look at all the awards they've won while you wait. I always take a snap of the specials board towards the back of the restaurant to see goodies that aren't on the menu!! We visit our family in North Carolina for thanksgiving/ family reunions and Dixies is at the half way point on our drive so we always stop here. It's a small cozy place and the staff is like family level nice and even though we go once to twice a year they always remember us. We've always been for breakfast and it hits the spot. Plus, the service is great and they have my favorite tiny ice. We've never had a bad experience. After several years, Dixie remains one of our favorite go-tos. Located in the tired downtown district across from a vacant paved lot that provides overflow parking for the small businesses that line the street. The exterior of the restaurant is nostalgic but the charm lies on the inside with the small breakfast counter on the left along with a number of odd tables scattered across the main dining area and a few booths lining the wall leading to the patio. Unlike many small town diners the staff here is highly motivated and especially friendly and very professional and eager to offer their opinions on the specials while keeping everyone's coffee cups filled to the brim with delicious fresh coffee. I'm a big fan of country ham so there was not doubt that I would be enjoying a slice of this Virginia salt cured ham with my eggs and toast and I must say it was some of the best I've had. I don't care for non-dairy creamers so my server brought over a small complimentary glass of fresh milk. Dixie Restaurant is a true picture of Southern charm, nestled on a cute street in Old Town Petersburg -- not far from I-95. I opted to visit for lunch en-route to North Carolina last week. It was easy to find the eatery from the highway, and parking was ample in the area. I walked inside to a local tv film crew taking b-roll of the chef making hot dogs. It turned out it was National Hot Dog Day (best holiday ever?), and the restaurant is known for their inventive dogs! How fun. They also are known for their part in the movie 'Lincoln,' which I now want to watch. After slipping in and grabbing a bar stool, a super sweet waitress immediately brought me a menu and water. Then, my assigned server came over, sat on the bar stool next to me, and chatted about good options aside from hot dogs, since I was too afraid to eat them with such a long drive ahead of me. Instead, I opted for their homemade chicken salad sandwich, no tomatoes. It came on white toast just a few minutes later, with a side of awesome chips. It didn't take me long to inhale the incredible sandwich, pay my bill (it was something like $6!!!), and head back onto the road. In fact, I realized later that I was out of there in 20 minutes' time. That made it the perfect fast but quality stop, and I always love being able to support local businesses, especially in times of traveling through new places when it would be so much easier to just pull up to a chain's drive-thru window. I'm so glad I was able to visit Dixie, and I'd recommend them to anyone who's traveling down 95 and wants a taste of top-tier comfort food. read more
