I hate to say that I am on the fence about this place. It is my best friend's favorite restaurant, so I really wanted to love it, but I just don't think I do. For starters, this place is in downtown Petersburg. The gps location on google is wrong, so definitely make sure you know where you are going before you deal with all the tiny roads in this downtown section of town. Some of the roads are barely passable, and DEFINITELY set your gps to the free public parking across the street because you do NOT want to drive down the cobblestone road directly at the front door. We could barely walk on it, I definitely would not try to drive on it. But none of that is the fault of the restaurant, so no stars deducted for that. It's just an observation. We arrived about 15 minutes to their opening time, around 4:45, which is good because they only take reservations for parties of 6 or more, they only have a couple of tables, they are only open for dinner a few days a week, and they fill up FAST. We were the second group to be seated after a couple of local regulars so we got seated in the good section downstairs. It is the good section because once you are upstairs, that is where all the people waiting to be seated have to wait. And I would say that it is kind of awkward because the people waiting just sort of stare the whole time like "are they almost done? Will we get a table soon?" [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is borderline uncomfortable having people watch you eat and then I felt guilty about wanting to order coffee and dessert on my once-a-year, girl's night out, Christmas meal with my friends.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This place has a rotating seasonal menu, so things change a few times a year. When we went, we ordered scotch eggs, crab dip, and some sort of Brussels sprouts. The scotch eggs were okay. Very sausage heavy. I liked the dip with them a lot though. The crab dip was not a hit, it was very funky. Fishy and Parmesan heavy or something. I didn't personally enjoy it, though I did like the wonton chips it was served with. The Brussels sprouts were amazing though, and the only app I would definitely order again. For entrees, we ordered the steak frites with green beans, the beef stroganoff, and the fish and chips. The fish and chips was crispy and good, but not anything super special. It sort of just tasted like fish and chips. Good, but not something I would go out of my way for. The beef stroganoff was good, and I sort of expected it to be amazing for the price I paid, but I really think it tasted just like I make it at home. The steak was awesome though. It was so buttery and tender. It was definitely the star, and the item I would order again. For dessert, we wanted to have the specialty snickerdoodle flavored dessert (might have been a panne cotta or something like that) but they only had vanilla, so we all opted for the apple bourbon caramel bread pudding. It was amazing. We loved it, and the coffee was just standard diner coffee. I'd probably order it again if it weren't seasonal. The service is very friendly, but it is definitely not somewhere you go on a time crunch. Appetizers, entree, coffee with dessert took us 1 hour and 50 minutes, and cost $60. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The aesthetic here is pretty cool if you are into vintage things. The restaurant is fashioned after a English-style tavern. The building, established early 1800s are serving some outrageous pub eats. Wood beams, small wooden bar and a fireplace, it has all the makings of American Werewolf in Virginia. We order drinks and review the menu. Man, the English sure love their peas and they're being served with lots of entrees. My go to is Fish & Chips and The Brickhouse Run does this dish very well. Our waitress was very helpful, she recommended the fried oyster wraps to start. The oysters were very fresh and were fried to perfection. The Fish & Chips come to me. It came with fries; those were overcooked but not inedible. Again, the meal was fine but I do expect a little more from a $17 burger. Our server was patient and polite, but it seemed like she really just wanted us to leave so she could turn the table. They were tons of people at the bar; we were not drinking. I assume she would have rather had drinking customers for the larger check. It was an OK experience altogether. I'll try it again maybe when we're looking to have a few drinks. read more

I visited Petersburg with a business associate on Friday night. We were excited to see how vibrant things were and decided to try Brickhouse. The atmosphere was great. Lots of locals and regulars at the bar and the low tables in the bar section. The dining room was packed with lots of people having a delightful evening. The food was top notch. I had a Peterburger and my buddy tried the pork chop. After he ate every morsel, he commented that if he'd known it was breaded he wouldn't have ordered it, but then said he was glad he didn't know. My burger was cooked perfectly and the portion size was exactly what I needed. I ordered a stout that was as good as any I've had in years. And the prices were very reasonable. This is a takeout review: I feel mixed about giving this review because the flavor was awesome. But the squash in my curry was raw. A couple smaller pieces were cooked but like 80% were undercooked to raw. And it's funny my mother got the same dish and hers was great and cooked fine.
