I am so glad that we chose Bert/DJ By the Bay for our event. My wife and I had a huge dance party a few days after our small city hall wedding, and Bert and Kyle (his photobooth operator for the evening) were there the whole time, including arriving very early to set up so our minds were at ease. The music: Bert was a joy to work with! We talked to him about the flow of the evening and gave him a playlist of our favorite dance party music and he did an amazing job choosing songs off of that playlist at just the right moments and reading the energy of the room. We had almost 2 hours straight of dancing, and I had friends and guests coming up to me at the end saying it was the best dance floor they had ever seen at a wedding party. They also let us provide a box of our own props in addition to theirs (we are theater geeks and asked to do this), which turned out spectacularly. He didn't require a deposit when we signed the contract. That alleviated the pressure of booking in advance since he allowed us to cancel if we changed our minds. We hired Bert and his team to provide sound for our High School graduation ceremony which was outdoors at the College of Alameda. We met with Bert via zoom to make sure he understood what all of our needs were and with his expertise was able to provide suggestions and tools to make things easier for us. Bert was proactive in doing a site visit on his own and visiting the college to begin to think about his set up, see where he would have access to power, etc. Through out the process he would check in to see if we had any needs and would also ask proactive questions to make sure he knew the ins and outs of our event. When we did a site visit with the College with their staff Bert made sure to learn the ins and outs of their set up to make sure he didn't miss anything. This to me showed his expertise as he would ask questions about things we may have forgotten or overlooked. We hired Gabe for our wedding July 3rd in Pescadero and we were more than happy with their work! They kept us on schedule without being rude or pushy, and made sure that we got through all of the special parts of our day without any hiccups including the ceremony, first dances, and speeches. I had my wedding at the Bently Reserve on 11/17/18. This review should have been posted a month ago, but things got a bit hectic and I haven't been able to find the time until now. First things first, I was really lucky to find Bert through work! I recently moved to the Bay Area from the east coast, and I had to plan my wedding in six months. Some of my friends in the bay recommended their wedding vendors, which was helpful (I ended up using one vendor for photography because I Iove her work). However, I was still needed a DJ/MC, lighting, and photo booth services. I picked one of the nicest venues (Bently Reserve) in the city, and it's not easy to work at this venue since there's so many restrictions. Luckily, he has experience working at this venue before, so he knows what to expect and I really like that. From start to end, he was amazing. I booked him for Dj/MC, lighting, and photo booth services as part of a bundle (less vendors are just easier to deal with). I came to him with pictures of exactly what I wanted and pointed out certain lightings and he was able to accommodate what was requested. MUSIC/EMCEE: Everyone at my wedding had a great time because the music was flowing. He knows how to gauge the crowd and make sure that people are having fun. What's nice is that he was able to play certain (not mainstream) tracks that I requested on the spot. My husband really likes his mixing of the music at the reception as well. LIGHTING: My family and friends were also in awe at how beautiful the lighting was. If I had to look back and compare the picture (of the lighting) that I showed him during our first meeting and what my wedding actually looks like, I have to say that Bert's work was a lot better than the picture. The colors go together so nicely. PHOTOBOOTH: Lots of cool props! My little cousins absolutely loved them and you can see so many photos of them since they had so much fun. Even the older adults enjoyed the props. He gave me 3 different colors for photo booth print outs instead of one. He definitely went that extra mile. I got exactly what I asked for and more. GOING THE EXTRA MILE: 1. He was very helpful in guiding me what to look for in wedding photographers and coordinators, things to reach out to with venue before bringing decors in (ie, candles), which was completely outside the scope of our agreement. 2. He even listened to me vent about my other vendor (drape) who I already paid and booked, cancelled a month before the wedding because my money was not good enough. 3. I didn't have my cell phone with me throughout the entire event and could not take any photos. And because I was so impatient to see my wedding photos (had to wait for a month), he sent me pictures and videos that he took on his phone. He also gave me a recording of my vows during the ceremony and gave links for the photo booth photos right away (I'm talking about the next morning) since my wedding guests were so excited to see pictures! ALL IN ALL: He really exceeded my expectations. Aside from all the craziness of wedding planning, I would rebook him in a heart beat for a wedding. I also recommend him to anyone who is looking for a superb DJ/MC, and audio/lighting services for their wedding. Out of all the vendors that I worked with, he's really the best. To be honest, it would be nice if he could be my vendor for everything because I wish some of my other vendors were just as great as he was. I'm a pretty picky person, so I'm surprised he was able to exceed my expectations. He's really passionate about his work and loves what he does. You can't go wrong with that! We hired Bert for our wedding at the Gardens at Heather Farm, and he and his staff were outstanding in every way. We have received lots of compliments from our guests about him, which makes us feel great. We are thrilled with how he performed, and we give him our highest recommendation. 1) Preparation - prior to our wedding, Bert was incredibly responsive about understanding our vision for our wedding. He offered to meet in person, but to accommodate our busy schedules, we had a lengthy Skype chat where we got to know each other and discuss various aspects of the wedding, from the order of events to the musical selections. He followed up with a very detailed questionnaire that helped us organize our thoughts, and we had several more telephone calls prior to the big day. In addition, we also hired the photo booth (*highly recommended,* especially if you have kids at your wedding), and we had separate calls to get the graphic design just right. Bert was very conscientious, thoughtful, and professional throughout the whole planning process, which was wonderfully calming during an otherwise hectic time. 2) Audio engineering - my wife and I were very concerned about having good audio throughout the day, especially at the ceremony. (We've been to many ceremonies where we couldn't hear what was going on.) Bert was the only DJ among the dozen or so we interviewed who suggested putting a mic on my wife, who has a rather soft voice. Even better, he suggested a solution where the mic was not visible on the exterior at all, thus making sure our photos turned out great. During the ceremony, the audio was crisp and clear for everyone, which was exactly what we wanted. 3) Day-of performance - Bert was fantastic on our actual wedding day as MC and DJ. We had to completely revamp our day-of itinerary because of a weather issue 24 hours before the big day. Although we reordered events and had to change things on the fly, Bert was very graceful and accommodating and always did a great job with introductions, transitions, and letting our guests know what was next. Bert has a very polite personality, and he put our guests at ease. Bert is very attentive without being overbearing, and he let us be the stars of the show, which is different from some other DJs we interviewed. 4) DJ skills - Bert is a great DJ! It's one thing for a DJ to play songs that you like, but it's another thing to actually be able to mix, transition, and overlay songs. Bert has mad skills as a DJ. And he's great as a music programmer, too. Of course he played the songs we had requested, but he also quickly figured out which songs would play best to the room, and he got everyone out of their seats and dancing. 5) Cost/value - on top of everything else, Bert was also much less expensive than the other DJs we interviewed. We hired him to be our MC and DJ, for photo booth services (again, highly recommended), and to provide uplighting. We just had our wedding about a week ago on 9/3/17. We utilized Gabe for DJ and MC services, as well as a photobooth. I must say, I am very happy with his work. When my now wife and I began researching vendors for our wedding, we went mostly off Yelp reviews. I stumbled upon DJ by the Bay and really liked their presentation. After looking around, we decided to move forward with Gabe, and were impressed with his professionalism and response time. After a few calls and signing the contract (their prices are pretty industry standard; they did throw in a couple things for us that were much appreciated), we were ready. Gabe sent us some documentation to complete before the wedding, and assured us his vast music catalog could cover all of our needs. He even confirmed that he could mix records as well like a regular DJ (to be honest, I can't remember going to a wedding where I've heard that before; usually it just sounds like the next song is clicked). He even met us at the venue in advance to make sure he knew the layout on the day of. We had one final call with him a week before the wedding to go over everything (timeline, music choices, name pronunciations, etc). Since the company was handling the audio for us, it was important we were all on the same page with wireless mics (ceremony) and that there was appropriate sound/accessories for speeches, etc. The day of went by in a blur. Gabe arrived on time and got right to work setting everything up outdoors for our ceremony. He did a quick mic check with me and my wife's cousin to make sure the sound worked. Once everything was in place, and I heard the music hit...I knew it was game time. Everything during the ceremony went off without a hitch, all the music and specific cues for after the ceremony were on point and no one had an issue with hearing us at the altar. Whew, first part was mission accomplished. I forgot to preface all of this with the fact it was about 900 degrees (as opposed to the 1000 degrees it was on Friday and Saturday; the wedding was Sunday), but Gabe was able to roll w/the elements with ease. Somehow there was some miscommunication during the tea ceremony (held prior to the "Western"/traditional ceremony) where our officiant was supposed to have a wireless mic, but didn't get one. Luckily, everyone was quiet enough so they could hear him, so we didn't need it. Once inside, we moved onto the second part of the day, and the most fun: the reception. My wife and I were busy taking photos after the ceremony, so we didn't get a chance to see how the cocktail hour went, but I believe there were no issues. I would have liked to see some sound on the outside of the venue (I think I had discussed this w/Gabe previously), but I think someone had told him there wasn't a need for it, so he didn't do it. That's not on him. I was too caught up in the day to realize until it was over. Oh well. The dinner music, handpicked by Gabe, was a nice touch too. During the reception, everyone really had a good time. And that's not just at the bar. Gabe played all of our music choices (and stayed far away from our do not play list, of course) and my family raved how the music wasn't too loud during dinner so they could talk to everyone at their table. Maybe I'm biased, but I haven't been to a wedding in awhile where I literally saw everyone dancing until the last song. Even my parents went out there, which is a minor miracle in itself. All of the specific music choices (cake cutting, first dance, mother/son dance) were all right on point too. He also played this ridiculous "Falling in Love With You" remix, with the UB40 instrumental and original Elvis voice. Blown away by that...I want a copy. We splurged for some uplighting, and were very happy that we did; the amber lighting looked great against our backdrops. Finally, the photobooth. Who knew this would be such a big hit! I was amazed how good the quality of the photos came out. Often times, the pictures, both digital and hard copy, look grainy or pixelated upon further inspection. But even when they printed ours out, they looked super clear. The template we used for the printouts looked great too. We got the digital copies from Gabe the next day (Labor Day!), and I couldn't stop smiling at how many people had gone in for a quick pic (or three, in many cases). The photobooth attendant was a good person to have there too. While she didn't have to do much at the end (she sort of just sat on her phone taking photos or video of the wedding when it was finishing; not sure if it was for the company's social media pages or not), it was good she was there to keep things moving and making sure all the photos were printing out. A few times I couldn't find her, as people had questions on the booth, but it didn't seem to affect anything. Overall, Gabe and his team were great, and I'd highly recommend him for DJ and photobooth services. You won't be disappointed. read more

We hired Bert as DJ and MC for our wedding at Sequoyah Country Club in the Oakland hills. We gave him our vision for desired music mix that leaned a lot on old school hip hop with some newer tracks and he delivered. We met him weeks earlier to scope out the venue, which has a dining room, buffet room, and dance room, and he gave us helpful suggestions in terms of the reception flow for the evening. He provided wireless mics for the ceremony (held just outdoors from the reception hall) and for the reception. He provided uplighting that was tasteful for the classic California/Mediterranean architecture inside the building. The photo booth was very well done and our guests absolutely loved it. It was well worth the upgrade. Lots of props to choose from. Bert offered a variety of designs for the photo output, not just the traditional vertical strips of photos, which was valuable to us. We also got to choose the backdrop for the photo booth (which we selected as open rather than closed), as well as the option of receiving digital copies of our guests' photos. Bert is professional, easy going, very responsive in ongoing communications, and flexible in meeting the couples' vision for the ceremony and reception. DJ Bert was a rockstar from start to finish. He MC'd our son's Bar Mitzvah recently and had everyone showing off their dance moves. We had people from all backgrounds and he played awesome music with seamless transitions from song to song. I shared some of my favorite French and Israeli dance music and he incorporated them all. When Bert was managing the kids dance contests, Gabe expertly handled mixing the music. Bert met me at the venue a week before to go over all of the details, where to set up, plus a Plan B in case of cold weather or rain. He brought extra lights and even offered to bring more for the caterers. We didn't use his photo booth, but we did use his projector and large standing screen. When I arrived at the venue everything was set up and ready for a party. Huge speakers, flashing colorful lights, a gigantic mixing board and extra spotlights for ambiance. With covid and trying to be cautious yet still celebrate, we were outside in an enormous space, but he picked the right spot to set up. I was rushing to finish the video montage and he took care of getting it to play without a hitch. If you like to get down with the getting down, give DJ By the Bay a call! I attended a wedding earlier this year where I was introduced to their skills.... My husband and I had a blast! We danced for 4 hours straight, the hits kept on coming! Then it was my turn to host an event for 60 people. The venue suggested their normal DJ, but they wouldn't even answer my calls. I remembered DJ By the Bay and asked my friends for their contact info. It was fate. Within an hour of reaching out, Gabe returned my call. We discussed the event for a little bit and then contracted within hours! Such an easy process. My event was slightly difficult as it was in an intimate small banquet room. I had guests ranging from preteens to silvers, so I was concerned that the music wouldn't appeal to all. I needed not to worry, Gabe was a pro! Every song, every transition was done perfectly. The volume levels and the moods all fit each moment like a glove. When I asked if he could suggest a song to dance with my father, he knew the perfect one right away. In short: he was super on top of his game, quick reply to emails, quick to think of solutions, and quick to run to rescue when our coordinator / venue dropped the ball. We had a semi complicated wedding with a lot of moving parts. We had to find a play list that worked for a wide range of audiences.. a good chunk of our 100+ guests of all ages danced until 1am.. so were assuming everyone liked the music. :) read more
