We dined at DLena tonight, and they knocked out the park. Our server "Maritza" was on top of her game at our table. When we arrived there were three out of our 5 in our party available. We were greeted and seated promptly, even when our entire was not available. We were given a hibiscus shot to cleanse our pallet before we ordered, what a nice touch. We ordered the fundido and empanadas as our appetizer and they were awesome. The crust on the empanadas was light, delicate, and did not overshadow the the filling. The fundido came with blue corn tortillas and three homemade salsas. It was over the top good. Our main courses were super tasty. We ordered the branzino, seafood enchiladas, octopus tacos, waygu fajitas served with blue tortillas, and cerviche with over the top chips. I visited the lower floor speak easy which was wonderfully decorated. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. Parking is a premium. Overall the food and service at this restaurant make it a top pick for me in the Wash. DC area. One of guest has visited the Sunday brunch, and said it was awesome. Went for dinner with a friend, we shared 3 dishes, corn empanadas, pork belly, and short rib. The staff was very attentive, and they made sure to double check how bad my shellfish allergy was. Their food does have cross contamination, but I am not super allergic that I'll go into anaphylactic shock. The restaurant's atmosphere was very intimate and not too loud. The chipotle down the street was more appetizing. Way over hyped restaurant. Would not try again. My boyfriend eats meat, the best thing he got he rated a 6. I'm not sure why it's rated Michelin star? The corn empanadas were oily, the broccolini tasted burnt and oily. They said it was a signature "oven char." I would NEVER recommend this place to a vegan. The server and this yelp thread told me they had a few vegan options yet the only vegan option was broccolini on the menu?! And you're in DC?! And a Mexican restaurant, one of the most vegan friendly cuisines???? Yall couldn't even hook me up with a fajita? Burrito? Nothing??????? Don't insult me. Worst $73 dollars I've ever spent. Who made the mistake to give this place not one but two Michelin stars at some point???? Maybe I should have come then and they are under new management now. I mainly picked this place over many much better food options because of the live music I read online. It was first come first serve seating. There was no hostess or anyone else to greet or direct once we got downstairs. I had no idea if it was packed or not i couldn't even see the whole place and it was awkward trying to walk around and find seating instead of someone guiding us to an open seat. No one upstairs had even mentioned the music downstairs. I only knew because I did a lot of research on the restaurant. The restaurant had nice decorations but was small. The tables were too close on the sides (horizontally) and to other dinners. But crazy enough too long (vertically) to be close to your partner. My boyfriend had to raise his voice pretty high so I could hear him and I was elbows with the other diners. The front desk staff that offered to move us after because I didn't wanted to be next to the kitchen is the only thing I can say I was grateful for. You rock lady. read more

This place has been so good that I've had to take my team in consecutive weeks! First off, the service was fantastic! We were immediately seated, provided with great recommendations for the table that had an eclectic mix of preferences, and Troy, our server, was enthusiastic, entertaining, and kept the table laughing. He really made the experience! Staff came over to check on us throughout and we all walked away highlighting how much we enjoyed the service. The food was delicious - we thought the dishes were creative and flavorful. We really enjoyed the crab guacamole and pork belly (several of us thought we could eaten these as meals rather than appetizers because we wanted more - the guacamole came with 3 salsas varying in spice which also was appreciated). We went big with the Tomahawk Steak and that was great for sharing with a group and came with its own little show that had our table and surrounding tables "ooohing and aaahhing." The steak was melt-in-your-mouth good. We really liked the venue - which was close enough to Gallery Place and a comfortable distance away if you are trying to avoid event traffic. My fiance and I had Saturday brunch at dLeña during our recent trip to Washington, D.C. We had an early reservation, and we were the first customers in the restaurant. They had just lit the wood burning grill, so it smelled like a BBQ pit. The restaurant is modern, with large windows to let lots of light in. We opted for the bottomless brunch option, which gave us a taste of the entire brunch menu and unlimited drinks. My favorite menu items were the seasonal fruit cocktail and the cazuela, which was a potato hash with smoked egg and salsa. The service was excellent. Our waiter brought us every menu item and kept our drinks filled. The food and drinks came very quickly. The restaurant is nice, the food is good, and I'd be happy to return for another brunch. read more

Wow! This place deserves the hype. The food is 10/10, and the drinks are probably around an 8/10. We started off our meal with drinks at the speakeasy-style lounge below the restaurant, Roja. I highly recommend going for the ambiance and vibe. It's decorated impeccably and has a dark but warm vibe with candles flickering around the room. Our drinks were pretty good-- they definitely contained a good amount of liquor, and were tasty, although a little one-dimensional. We tried the La Luna, Spiked Flower, and Mezcal Painkiller. The La Luna was probably the best if you like your drinks on the stronger side-- and a cool charcoal-black color. The Mezcal Painkiller came in second: a slightly smoky painkiller with a pistachio milk ice cube. The flavor from the ice cube didn't really come across until the bottom of the drink and it had a good 30 minutes+ to melt. The Spiked Flower was decent too-- think a spicy margarita kind of vibe. After drinks, we headed upstairs to be seated in the similarly beautiful restaurant. This food blew us away. We started with the Queso Fundido-- the beef was tender, the cheese was slightly crispy, and each salsa in the trio was bright and punchy. The corn tortillas rounded out this amazing appetizer. For our mains, we ordered the Enchiladas with shrimp and blue Maryland crab, and the Wagyu Steak fajita special. These enchiladas were amazing-- packed with seafood, cheesy, and the sauce!! It was creamy and slightly spicy and smoky and possibly the best part of the dish. It was topped with some greens and tomatoes in a tangy dressing that really balanced all the flavors. The fajitas were similarly delicious. I'm not the biggest steak person, but this was tender and cooked perfectly. This truly is a leveled up fajita, and included super fresh tortillas, peppers, onions, guacamole, and the salsas we had saved from our appetizer. Delicious! On top of the wonderful food, the service was fantastic. Our server took the time to explain the menu, answer questions, and check in with us often. Our water was constantly topped off, and our empty plates were taken almost immediately. I've enjoyed dinner at D. Lena many times, including live music nights, and usually recommend it to friends and visitors for the great food and service. However, during a recent Monday happy hour with a group of four, the experience was disappointing. While the food was still excellent, the lead bartender was rude. He repeatedly messed up our orders, he never apologized but instead he denied we had even placed the orders multiple times. Inevitably we were overcharged for items we never received. Unfortunately, one bad experience can really sour an otherwise great place. read more

This review is only for the mezcal lounge in the basement...a straight VIBE!! Had a fabulous time here on a Saturday night. Shockingly not too crowded. We were able to squeeze into a couple seats at the bar and their were a couple seats open at the communal couch around 9pm. It is first come first serve with limited seating, maybe ~8 seats at the bar, two communal couches holding 4-6 each and a handful of tables. The live music was incredible and the drinks were great. I had a mezcal painkiller that was delicious. They also have their menu downstairs if you want some bites. The ambience is awesome. It's beautiful and small and intimate with dim lighting, great for a date. Come for the good drinks, good vibes, and good music. I have been to D'Lena for happy hour and dinner and absolutely loved the food. However, my first brunch experience was so disappointing. I arrived around 11:30am for brunch and there was already a good amount of folks eating. So we did the bottomless food and drinks. How the bottomless brunch works: They bring out a small portion of each food item on the menu. Unlike other restaurants that allow you to pick and choose what you want. The food came a pretty good pace. We got the food in three's. I highly recommend D'Lena to put the seasonal fruit cocktail at the end... it was way too sweet to start a meal off. The fruit is just sitting in frothy orange juice. The ceviche was good...not like traditional ceviche because it had more mango and cucumber than tuna. The tacos had good flavor, however the meat was SO dried out, it was hard to enjoy. Same with the chicken and waffles, DRY. I also didn't care for the sauce that was on the chicken. The enfrijoladas and the corn and shrimp enchilada tasted like tortilla and sauce. So bland. The cazuela smelled great, but was bland but very salty. Sounds confusing right? The salmon.... DRY, no flavor. The street corn...DRY. The flavor was very lemony and was not a joy to eat because the kernels were so dried out. Last but not least, the churros. So disappointed. Super oily and it tasted like straight grease. Also, the churros were undercooked. It was still doughy. Overall, I do not recommend D'Lena for brunch. The food was so dried out. Maybe they have the food cooked and sitting under heat lamps. Service was great. My waiter was very attentive and continued to check on us. Margarita was a miss. Stick to the mimosas. The restaurant says they consider feedback but it doesn't seem to be true after looking at other brunch reviews. It is absolutely overhyped for brunch. Try out their happy hour and dinner service. Oh gosh, this review is long overdue, and it's for their speakeasy: The Roja Lounge! It's walk-in only, and so I stopped by right as they opened to snag a table for a group of 4. It is so beautifully decorated; dark, sexy, and moody. I loved it! The cocktails were all superb! If I remember correctly, the drinks change every so often so the same ones aren't always available. We also got some guacamole and salsa for the table to nibble on, and they were fabulous! Our waitress was lovely and often came by to give us more chips. I really enjoyed my experience, and definitely look forward to more visits and dining at the restaurant one day. read more

We had an okay experience during our recent visit to dLeña. On the plus side the short rib tacos and hamachi ceviche were outstanding. Unfortunately, we didn't really enjoy the bone marrow and fried tuna dish or the crepe cake dessert. The tuna was over cooked and had a mushy fried coating and the cake was pretty flavorless, except for the caramel sauce on top. Also, our server started out okay, but seemed to forget about us halfway through the meal. We had to ask three or four times for a refilled bottle of sparkling water, before it finally showed up 30 minutes later. read more

Do not walk, RUN to DLena! As soon as we walked in, we were impressed with the ambiance and decor of the restaurant. You feel the vibes as soon as you walk in from outside. We came here on a Sunday night hungry and ready to order almost the entire menu. We settled on the queso fundido and and pork belly to start, with the pork shank, shrimp and crab enchiladas, baked potato, and broccolini for our mains. We capped off our meal with the creme brulee. Every single item we ordered was delicious and flavorful. My favorite start was the pork belly - the sauce was so savory, and the pork belly itself was very tender. The enchiladas are very satisfying and full of lots of shrimp and crab. They definitely didn't skimp out on the ingredients. While the baked potato was fine and included bits of that delicious pork belly, we didn't care for the yellow sauce on top of the potato. It's reminiscent of egg salad, and was just a weird addition, IMO. The creme brulee was good too, if not a little sweet. They bring it to your table and add a little fire to it, so the presentation/show is interesting as well. For drinks, we also got the Mexican Old Fashioned and Casual Encounter. Both drinks were tasty and well made. I absolutely highly recommend coming here to eat, and it's a good place for large groups or celebrations as well. read more

Surprised my boyfriend here for his birthday. Definitely make reservation, they tend to fill up pretty quickly. The bar here is beautiful and very cozy feeling, would definitely come back here to experience that. We started off with some cocktails, my favorite is the Mexican Old Fashion. It was so delicious along with the table side presentation. One of the best old fashion. Loved the Smokey taste and smell to it. For dips, we got the Habanero Pepita Salsa and the Maryland Crab Guacamole. Both were so amazing with the char chips on the side. The Maryland Crab Guacamole is a must try! Absolutely a favorite from here. The guacamole was so fresh. Combine with the Smokey jumbo crab and old bay. Literally the best! My boyfriend ordered the Pulpo Tacos which were not amazing. There were too much slaw taking away from the octopus itself. The octopus texture was much softer than the normal chew you normally would expect. I got the Ostiones a la Leña, which were half dozen grilled oysters. They were phenomenal. I loved the citrus taste along with the smoked bacon jam and chipotle mignonette. Bursting with flavors! We also had the Empanadas de Wagyu, which were so delicious. The empanada shell were so flaky and soft with just the right amount of crispness. The beef tenderloin was so tender and juicy. I loved the truffle cheese, oyster sauce, and guajillo chili all combined together. For entree we got the 14oz 30 Day Aged Boneless Ribeye and Camarónes a la Diabla. Wow one of the best steaks I've had. It was cooked to perfection, served on a hot stone that kept it hot throughout, piping hot to the very last bite. The Camarónes a la Diabla was very flavorful. You get the nice chat from the grill with the smoked chili and chipotle sauce. For desert my boyfriend and I each got the Carajillo Crème Brulée. It was absolutely mouthwatering and I would come back for the Carajillo Crème Brulée alone. It was an espresso creme brulee, topped with liquor 43. The flavor of the espresso so perfect and the sugar on top of the creme brulee was just the perfect amount of thickness. Came to dLeña for brunch on Mother's Day and it was pretty good but there are some things to note: The decor aligns well with the Mexican cuisine it is inspired by. However, while chic and very reminiscent of decor seen in Cancun and Tulum, there was definitely a sacrifice of functionality for style. Many of the tables are high tops with chairs that have extremely low backing with zero back support (and it's roulette if you get one of these when making a reservation, it seems) which is a problem for those that are differently abled or even elderly. As someone recovering from back surgery, I had to request we get a lower table. Thankfully the hostess was able to accommodate but soon after a mother/daughter pair (in which the mother was elderly) was taken to that same table, only experience a similar issue with no availability for a switch, like I was fortunate to have. Service was prompt and everyone we encountered (from the hostess to the server to the manager) were extremely friendly and courteous. For food, we did the bottomless brunch and what impressed me most was the efficiency in which the dishes came out. I figured it's not made to order, and more batch created, which definitely helped expedite the process. We had the seasonal fruit cocktail, caesar salad, grilled street corn, birria beef and baja fish tacos, huevos rancheros, crispy chicken waffles and the churros (to finish off with something sweet). In my (humble) opinion, the standouts were the seasonal fruit cocktail (first time having espuma, which was a passion fruit flavoured foam mixed with fruit), the caesar salad (the taste was definitely elevated when compared to others), the fish tacos and the churros (which admittedly beat out the ones I had in Spain). read more

Heard a lot about this place, so decided to try it out and was not disappointed. The inside is very dark, kind of too dark, but not a huge deal. The service was friendly but not very talkative, not a big deal either because everything came out quickly and they checked in regularly. Now for the food -- we tried the ceviche amarillo and pork belly as starters. The ceviche was tasty but had a ton of fruit, struggled to find as much fish, and was overall pretty disappointing for that reason -- 6.5/10. The pork belly was excellent. The crust was crispy but it was fork-tender and delicious, as was the sauce -- 9.5/10. For mains we got camaron (shrimp) tacos, short rib tacos, and a side of the carrots. These were all excellent as well. The camaron tacos weren't the most exciting dish but were executed well -- 8.5/10. The short rib tacos were heaven in every bite, delicious flavors and the crispy onion topping was a great compliment to the tender meat -- 10/10. The carrots were great as well -- 9/10. Went for an all you can eat brunch and at $37 for food it's a bit pricer so make sure you can eat enough to make it worth it for you. In terms of the food itself it was worth it, everything was worthwhile, the highlights were the Birria tacos, the chicken and waffle, churros, and surprisingly enough, the fruit cocktail which was light and sweet, not traditional yogurt, more of a light foam that was excellent. The service was fantastic, good pacing on the food and they cleared the empty plates quickly. They also took very very good care of one of us who was gluten free including making everyone at the table aware of which was for them and which was for everyone else. The only downside was they say you have a two hour reservation (for 4 people) but we got a "last call" notice for food and drink an hour and twenty minutes in and were told 10 minutes later by someone (not a server) that they'd need the table. So I understand they're busy but don't say there is a 2 hour reservation and then ask for the table after 90 minutes--kinda left a bad taste in our mouths to end the experience. read more

dLena lived up to the hype!! Ive been told by numerous friends and foodies alike, that I had to try dLena...and so finally I did, and it was worth with it!! Parking is good if you can get there early, or give yourself plenty of time to find decent street parking. There's also a small parking lot directly across the street. The staff is attentive and professional...and the service was wonderfully efficient. The food was great! I had the short rib al carbon, which was a very good quality of meat, and cooked to absolute 'tenderness' perfection!! After dinner, if you choose to dine upstairs, you can head downstairs to their speakeasy. Its an open lounge with plenty of seating (first come-first serve though), and live music. Its not too spacious when packed, but just try to make your way through the area with caution. Unfortunately, the bartenders had to remake one of my friend's drinks (jameson sidecar) 3 times..but it was bartender Nancy to the rescue. The bathrooms are also downstairs, and are unisex, clean, and very spacious. The individual stalls are sooo roomy..and Im here for it!! I love that there are full length mirrors within each stall, which allowed me to fix my clothing or any other wardrobe adjustments in privacy. Btw, some of the men need to learn to wash their hands after using the bathroom, because I will judge you when I see you coming out of your stall, bypassing the sink, and heading back into the lounge area... Overall, this experience was wonderful! Highly recommend! And shoutout to one of the managers (?) in his stylish blue suit. He kindly charged my friend's cell phone at the hostess stand, and put the staff on notice to alert my friend if her phone rang (she is ob/gyn doctor, who unexpectedly had to be on call during our dinner because of another doctor's medical emergency). Upon arrival there were three women standing at the front and right away gave nasty attitude. I asked for a table at the lounge area and they told me I had to go downstairs and check if there's any space and that they hadn't been downstairs to know. We're not from the area and we were excited to find food we were familiar with. Clearly we weren't aware we had to go find a table downstairs ourselves. The attitude was uncalled for, maybe the fact that we didn't know pissed them off but to have three women provide that kind of service upon arrival was completely unprofessional. Keep in mind that a restaurant host is considered the "face" of the establishment because they are the first and last person guests interact with. Their appearance plays a significant role in shaping guests' first impressions. It would have been great to mention when I called about reservations and they recommended the lounge area, that the lounge area and the bar are not guaranteed seating areas, especially when they were fully booked that Saturday night. Can't just assume everyone knows that this restaurant is small and seats are VERY limited. I wouldn't have risked paying an uber to take us to this restaurant if the person on the phone had mentioned that. I'd say reservations are mandatory, not suggested. My mother has a problem with her knee and she had to walk down just to right away walk back upstairs because it was just so packed. I had no idea it was going to be so small and that WE had to be the ones to find a table. My mother was confused why there were a couple empty tables in the dining area. Food looks delicious, it's too bad we didn't get a chance to try it. I promise you we're the most understanding family, but I think it's important to know how the host can impact everything. Regardless if it's busy or it's a slow day, customer service should be amazing and stay the same throughout. It's unfortunate but we won't be coming back. read more

The food was spectacular as per usual and service fantastic, but we had mentioned twice it was a bday and they saw the bday bags and flowers brought along, but it wasn't acknowledged once. Given our anniversary dinner had gone so well, I have to chalk it up to a miscommunication. Just a small bummer. Also- I can see how the bottomless drinks and food option turns the environment into a slightly less self-aware / self-regulated space.... meaning by 2pm, tables of large groups were literally screaming over one another when talking and laughing so loud, our table had a hard time hearing one another. When I can hear and clearly detail what happened on someones date from a-z from the table next to me, thaaatttt isn't ideal. So IF you go for brunch, I'd suggest going earlier before folks are too inebriated. We'll definitely be back, but keep those tips in mind! read more

I hate that I am only giving Dlena a 3-star review because I have previously visited about a year ago for a private birthday dinner with a group of friends, and we had an absolute amazing experience. Fast forward to now the night me and my friend visited was a bit of an off night. I started with a tamarindo margarita which was just ok nothing to rave over. I just feel like if I order a margarita at a Mexican restaurant, it should be one of the best I've ever had. For appetizers we shared the Maryland Crab Guacamole which was the highlight of the evening for me. I then went ahead and ordered the enchiladas that had both shrimp and Maryland blue crab. Unfortunately, this too was just ok, while I didn't care too much for the guajillo sauce and it didn't help that the entree came out and it was basically room temperature. My friend went with the Camarones a la Diabla and a Papa al Horno. He enjoyed but again nothing to rave over. While this experience fell a little short for me this go around, DLena is aesthetically pleasing and provides an ambiance that can't be matched. Beautiful ambiance! Very dim lighting which gives a nice date night vibe. The staff is great. We were welcomed with a little hibiscus juice shot when we sat down. We started with the crab guacamole and empanadas which were both a 10/10. For drinks we got the Mercado and guava me please. For dinner we got the 32oz tomahawk steak which is shareable and comes with two sides. You get a little fire side show when you get the tomahawk. The carrots weren't that good. I would have preferred a sweet glaze vs the savory seasoned taste bc it just tasted like seasoned water. Broccolini was flavorful. We also had the prawns which were huge! Def worth the price. They do have a little bar downstairs that plays live music which was a nice touch to end the night. read more

D'Lena for lunch! What could be better? We started with great guacamole and chips, then we have shrimp and crab enchiladas, kale salad with salmon, steak fajitas, and beef barrio tacos. The birria tacos were excellent - full of flavor. The steak fajitas were really tasty. The enchiladas were subdued, bland. The espresso creme brûlée was terrific. D'lena is, quite frankly, my favorite restaurant, whether it's for brunch with a large group or a relaxed evening outing. Their food is amazing, with great presentation and even better service. The managers are responsive--Cindy always greets us with a smile, and the other manager with glasses is equally amazing (sorry, I forgot his name). You have to try this place. Thank me later! I don't even know where to begin. When I heard about this place, I heard it was bottomless brunch and that sounded so amazing! Well it is, and it was quite overwhelming , but in a good way. The food was phenomenal. I loved the concept of just trying different dish after different dish. The server, and I feel bad I forgot his name, , but he was super cool and super knowledgeable of the menu. Several people contributed to our experience, and a great shout out to all of them for being incredibly professional. A VERY nice restaurant. Very clean, the bathroom was actually fire . The restaurant is beautiful and provides a great atmosphere. It was a busy night but we made reservations and were seated quickly. Our server was very friendly. We loved his energy. He was attentive as well. We tried the corn empanadas. They were simple and underwhelming. We enjoyed our entrees. The short rib tacos were delicious. Hearty and flavorful. The ingredients were stacked high and complimented each other well. The chicken was well seasoned. I enjoy al dente broccolini but it was tough to eat. The dessert is a non-traditional cheese cake. It wasn't very sweet and it was warm, hence grill in its name. It was tasteless to me but I would have liked it more if it could be cold. read more

My first time here but most emphatically do not want it to be my last. The decor was chic and comfortable. The place was popping, definitely popular with great reason. The service was phenomenal. My family all exclaimed about it being the best we've experienced hands down. We each partook in the bottomless brunch options. The food was flowing with ease and each bite was a different kind of delicious. The fruit cocktail is not your every day humdrum Dole mixed fruit. It was so fresh and flavorful it was nearly impossible to refuse seconds. The shrimp cocktail was bursting with flavor enough to make your mouth water. The spices were so intense and scrumptious I barely wanted to sip my water for a bit of hydration.
