So, this was probably one of the only restaurants where I actually agreed with the price per servings because the food is definitely filling. I came here with my lady for her bday and just everything was right. So let's talk about what happened when we first got here. We didn't have reservations but we came to the basement where the speak easy is at and got seated within about 15 mins or less. Then we got out drinks which came pretty fast, and put an order in for our appetizer which was their wagyu empanadas which were freaking amazing, also came out within 15 mins or less. Then we got dinner I got the short rib tacos which again 10/10, and she got the short rib which was also a 10/10, so if you decide to get those do understand it is worth every penny. If you like live music then definitely sit in the speak easy part of the restaurant because the vibes and ambience down here is pretty nice. dLeña has been on my list for awhile now and I finally got around to going. I will definitely be back! We came on a Saturday, so reservations weren't available since we waited until the day before to try. No problem. We got there right when they opened and were given the option of bar or the lounge downstairs (both first come first serve). I went with the lounge downstairs and will continue this next time; service was great, lounge was comfortable, and there was live music at 7. The bartenders and my waiter were great. There aren't many great mixologists lately that I've encountered, so I was happy to come across dLeña actually valuing this. Now for the food. Everything was great. So great that I didn't get photos of everything, but we ordered camarones a la diabla, a baked potato, pork belly, pork belly tacos, empanadas, and multiple cocktails. Everything was great. This has been a bookmark for some time now. Everyone talks about DLena. Is it Overhyped? Nah DLena is absolutely stunning! The ambience & staff (insert heart emoji) just fabulous. I love the speakeasy on the bottom floor and I found myself eyeing a good catch ;). Well.... It was actually a very well prepared tomahawk steak for 2. Seriously it was eye catching. Really beautifully decorated restaurant that is pretty unassuming from outside. At night, it's really dark inside though and the candles don't provide much light. We came to celebrate our anniversary. Our server was so nice and funny. He was really helpful in telling us which dishes were good and which weren't. He definitely made us have an enjoyable time. Their initial "shot" of non-alcoholic mezcal was delicious. Their lemonade is also really good. We tried the guacamole (delicious), wagyu fajita (cooked perfectly and absolutely melt in the mouth--they forgot to bring us our tortillas and we didn't realize this until we saw it on the menu during dessert), short rib tacos (meh, the short rib was really dry), and the broccolini (a bit over charred and too oily). We've heard so many raving reviews about dleña so I was looking forward to dining here. I'd rate this at more of a 3.5 but bumped it up to 4 stars because of the great service and ambiance. There's also a nice speakeasy downstairs with live music which was fun! We started with drinks. I got the southside mule which tasted very watered down to me, but the presentation was nice. For appetizers we got the habanero Pepita salsa and crab cake tostada. The salsa was good but they didn't give many chips for it. The crab cake tostada was probably one of my favorite things we ordered. It usually comes with 3 but since we were a party of 4 they added an extra one for us. It is an extra charge though. It was very flavorful and had a good sauce on top. For entrees we split three for a party of 4. The shrimp enchiladas, wagyu steak and Bronzino. The wagyu steak was good, but it tasted like normal steak. I didn't get a sense of any Mexican fusion flare to it or find it to taste better than regular steak even though it's listed as wagyu. The Bronzino was good and the enchiladas were probably my favorite. Very good filling and the sauce on top was nice. Finally for dessert we got the crepe cake which was delicious. The filling was amazing and it was topped with caramel. I did think the caramel could have been omitted to taste better but it didn't ruin the dish. We were celebrating a birthday so we got churros as well. They were really soft and tasted fresh. Overall I feel like dleña is a bit overhyped. The food was amazing, I had the crab guacamole loved it definitely 5 stars for that alone; and that flatbread they grill was delicious, I asked for more. A friend ordered the pork belly so I had to try a piece; It was tender and seasoned well. My sister friend tried the beef empanadas. They were my least favorite as it was a little too much cheese that it seem to take away from the beef but the pastry itself was good. Initially I was going to order the steak but after eating the guac, pork belly and empanadas I was starting to get full so we shared the short rib tacos. These tacos were absolutely amazing! The beef was tender and perfectly seasoned. I don't know what the sauce was but it was delicious! I could've ate them again the next day. For dessert I opted for my favorite creme brûlée. Now it wasn't the best brûlée I've had as it seemed to be lacking in filling but that may be due it being made with liqueur nonetheless it was still very good and I would still put it at the top of my list. It was the first I've had with liqueur which truly elevated the dessert. Because it was my birthday they also gave me an order of churros...let me tell you that sauce OMG was the best I had ever had! The churros were so light and crispy. A great end to my night. Our server I believe his name was Noah...the best! The restaurant has a low light, very social vibe and this was a Thursday evening. The chefs table sits right in front of the kitchen so you don't miss a minute of the action. The executive chef was patient and fluid in his movements with the staff and with us. I would equate this experience to a white glove service. We had someone dedicated to our table. He was very knowledgeable on each dish and very fun to talk to. He attended to our every need. There are 8 courses and each is more decadent than the last. I would say come with an open mind as we were served things I would not have imagined came out of this restaurant. My favorite was the ceviche and the avocado salad. To name them makes them sound simplistic and they were anything but! I decided to have a solo date for my birthday and was looking for a nice restaurant with a good vibe and great food. D'lena popped up in my search and I decided to give it a try. I'm so happy that I did. I received great service as soon as I walked in. I didn't have reservations (they are highly recommended) because I planned to sit at the bar. The hostess greeted me and told me that I have a choice between the bar upstairs or downstairs. Since it was my first time here she graciously showed me how to access the bar downstairs. I love the whole vibe inside. The ambiance is giving sexy and chic. The bar upstairs wasn't too crowded and I decided to check out what downstairs looked like. It was a lot more crowded and loud downstairs. I opted to sit upstairs and settled in and was immediately assisted by one of the lovely bartenders (ugh...I'm usually better with names). I got a delicious margarita and guacamole to start. The bartender asked about allergies and alerted that with my shellfish allergy they would switch my chips out for a gluten free option. The guacamole was fresh and flavorful. The chips were a bit spicy for my liking but once I dusted the spice off, they were delicious. I love some branzino. When I saw it on the menu, I was pretty much sold and the bartender co-signed my decision. I loved my seat at the bar. You could see the inner workings of the kitchen. They were moving some food! This fish was AMAZING! The flavor was on point! It was served with coleslaw and a grilled avocado. They all paired perfectly together! This other bartender has a major attitude and tells us the kitchen is closing , a completely different time than then what the hostess tells us. At this point, my friend is not happy. I'm not either, and not trusting them , if I was to place a food order. Bar staff needs to work on them selves and have an attitude adjustment. It is difficult getting reservations sometimes, so it is nice to have a space dedicated to those who just want to grab something small. I would not recommend going all out with the food item since the tables are very small. They will make recommendations if you ask. Food: Mexican Old Fashioned - Smokey. I ordered this and the presentation is everything! They bring over the drink in a case filled with smoke. The smoke come rushing out as you grab your drink and fills the air around you. Dlena is going onto my list of favorite restaurants in DC. I saw a TikTok video and knew I had to experience this restaurant. Chef Richard presents a modern approach on a classic on classic Mexican fare. The ambiance is inviting and absolutely beautiful. I feel like I am back in Tulum every time I visit. Most of the food is cooked on the wood-fire grill which adds amazing flavors to each dish. I highly suggest booking 2-3 weeks in advance if you want a Friday or Saturday night dinning experience. So I finally got to chance to experience the hype of the place and I was not disappointed! I came for happy hour and I got to the restaurant exactly at 5pm. There was already a line of folks waiting to get through the door so I was glad I came right when they opened up. I was able to reserve a seat for myself and a friend so I highly recommend for people that want to experience the happy hour to come at 5pm in order to grab a seat, especially if your party will be over 2 or more. The bar area is a a decent size but it is not huge and the happy hour on lasts until 6:30 so keep that in mind. Once my friend arrived we ordered the passion fruit margarita with the infused rosemary and hibiscus syrup. This drink is probably one of my top favorite margaritas. It's not too sweet due to the tartness of the passion fruit but it still has a great flavor. We also ordered the Barbacoa tacos and omg we were in heaven. I am not a big fan of beef but I cannot deny how extremely flavorful and succulent the meat was. Definitely some of the top quality tacos in the DC area. I also tried the Tostadas and I was surprised at how flavorful the mushrooms were. The tortilla was a bit burnt but the rest of the flavors shined through. The staff at the bar was very attentive to our needs and they made sure to remind us of the last call for happy hour. We ordered our last round round of drinks and our bill was pretty reasonable given that we ordered 4 drinks and 3 rounds of the tacos and 1 of the tostadas between the two of us. Will I go back to Dlena? That shouldn't even be a question. The right question to ask is when I will be back?! The answer to that is as soon as I can find reservations for brunch! This is a hot spot for brunch and reservations have to be made in advance. DESSERT- Carajillo Crème Brulée 10/10 - We're starting with dessert because if there is one thing you have to get on this visit, it's the crème brulée. This photo was taken after we devoured one of the 3 empanadas. Bonus points for being served with 2 vibrant sauces! ENTREE- 14oz 30 Day Aged Boneless Ribeye 9/10 - we had our mind set on a nice, juicy steak and this did everything it needed to. Loved the chimichurri sauce and the shishito peppers on top. Enchiladas 10/10 - prob the best shrimp enchilada I've ever had, likely because it was combined with maryland blue crab. The sauce was amazing and the whole dish worked together super well. SIDES- Broccolini 10/10 - I would eat a bowl of this by itself. It was perfectly salted and I LOOOVED the charred flavor. It made me super eager for the warm weather ahead so I can pull the grill out and try to recreate this broccolini dish at home. DRINKS- I wasn't in the mood for alcohol the last time I visited and just had water. But anytime I've had drinks prior, they've been absolutely amazing! SERVICE There's literally a guy whose job is to spot people as soon as they take a seat and bring them over their water. It's all self-seating in the downstairs lounge/speakeasy area which makes it even more likely that you'd run into that long awkward wait questioning if someone is ever going to make it to your table...but no need to worry about that here. Always dope vibes at DLeña ... Began the night downstairs and listened to some live jazz music ... Came upstairs to have dinner simply because their drink menus differs and my Love desired the Mercado. Great ambiance and amazing food. Service was prompt and efficient. I love the ambiance and atmosphere of this test it's t. I matter if you're inside or out, you don't feel like you're in the middle of DC but in the Midwest (until an ambulance passes lol). The traditional guac was addicting and I could eat it every day. You can taste the freshness of every ingredient used. That too goes for the short rib tacos and the branzino. I loved the chargrilled avocado that came along with the fish meal. Drinks were just okay, could use a bit more of a kicker - especially for the price. I'll try to return for happy hour. read more
