Don't let the billboards and vehicles out front of the restaurant fool you like it fooled me. As someone who loves BBQ frequently cooks it themselves, I know that I have a high standard. I try to keep that in mind when I am judging a barbecue restaurant; however, after reading other reviews I can see that I am not crazy. The pulled pork was soggy and tasted like it was cooked in a crock pot. The ribs were small and dry. The barbecue beef was tough and tasted more like roast beef. It all had one thing in common, it was all bland. The ribs didn't even have any rub on them. The only redeeming quality of this restaurant was the service and the sides. Unfortunately this was overshadowed buy sub spar food. Further, there was a strange liquid substance leaking out from under the bar. I have ate at some pretty shady looking places. Typically this is a sign that the barbecue is going to be really good. Unfortunately that was not the case here. I often pass by this restaurant on my way back and forth from Florida to Alabama. Their meat has the texture of dog food. It doesn't have the delicious smokey flavor that you'd expect from a barbecue restaurant. I would much rather go to Smokey Joe's in Dothan. Don't waste your time or money! read more

Tried the combination plate & I was not impressed. The pork was as mushy as the other reviewer said. The ribs still had the membrane attached (which I had to eat around bc it was tough). The beef was only okay. The plate was absolutely swimming in sauce. It looks like they ladled it on. I gave this place an extra star because the service was fast and friendly and the fries & slaw were good. The soft serve vanilla ice cream was delicious. This is hands down the worst bbq I have ever eaten. I was suckered in by their brilliant "world famous" sign. This was one of my greatest mistakes to date. Really really poor. Started with our seat near a window. When we pulled the blinds up there were about 20 dead flies. I got a combination plate. The pulled pork and beef weren't horrible but the ribs were. Their sauce ruined everything it touched. Took a long weekend and drove to Greenville, Mississippi from Tampa for Mother's Day so my buddy could see his ailin' Mama... I was hoping for three things--- Fried Chicken, Soul Food, and Barbecue... The first BBQ place we stopped at was Dobb's... The service couldn't have been sweeter or more attentive, and the tall brunette woman (manager/owner?) was downright captivating... My friend got the sliced pork sandwich and I got the ribs ---- both with fries and cole slaw which were generic... The tomato-tangy barbecue sauce was startling and it seemed my ribs were braised in the stuff till they fell apart... Braised ribs like I was at a hospital cafeteria... The meat flaked diagonally and slid off the bone like it was grouper. Hard to describe... Exploring my taste buds for evidence that these ribs ever saw a smoker, all I detected was a mild staleness, as if the ribs were cooked days before and refrigerated, only to be simmered in sauce, and thrown on a plate... I was shocked... The pork sandwich was good my buddy said, but when he offered me a piece all I could taste was that concentrated sauce... The mild, near flavorless sliced pork was lost... Love is my message, and I know it's probably family---- but that kitchen needs a new pitmaster/cook... Sorry... Seems my route and limited time on this trip didn't get me any of the things on my wishlist... We stopped at Dreamland in Tuscaloosa and the ribs were better, but didn't do much for me... This restaurant doesn't even deserve 1 star, it was absolutely disgusting. They brought out our food on these green plates that from what I could imagine is what people in prison eat off of, their French fries looked like they came out of a Ore-Ida bag, and their BBQ was tasteless, along with their BBQ sauce, the ketchup tasted better. Was out of town on a camping trip with the wife, daughter and her boyfriend in Florida near the Georgia state line. Well during our excursion we drove into Alabama so we were hungry and decided the stop. We saw a billboard for Dobb's BBQ so we decided to try there. Upon arriving you can see is was a small place but very homey. We sat down and was greeted with that Southern charm. We were looking over the menu and saw Campfire Stew listed. My daughter was not sure what would be in it. The wife and I explained it was probably like HOBO stew (a little bit of everything). When the waitress came back with our drinks we asked about the Campfire Stew. She explained but it wasn't clicking with my daughter so the waitress brought out a sample of the stew for us all to try. OMG!!!! The was the best stew I ever ate. We were all in heaven. We ended up not ordering it for lunch. Instead we ordered a gallon to go back with us. Yes it was that good. So I ordered the combo plate for lunch. It was delicious. The ribs were tender as well as the sliced pork. The fries had the right amount of rigidity but softness on the inside. I could not say one bad thing about this place. So if you are ever in the area this is a must for you to stop and try it out. I wonder if the Stew can be shipped??? Old school BBQ! Delicious smoky flavor...had chipped pork large sandwich...yummy! The fries were crispy but creamy inside! Hot sauce was brought with meal...vinegary type with nice flavor but I added the homemade hot sauce too! Service was sweet and friendly! There is really only 3 reasons to go to Dobbs: Camp Stew, Chipped BBQ, and Strawberry Shortcake. The Camp Stew is the best stew you will ever have! I am surprised it is not on the Top 100 things to try in Alabama before you die because I have never had anything like it. The BBQ is only good when it is chipped and mixed in with the sauce. The sauce is unique as it seems to be ketchup based and in some way has worchestershire sauce in it. I eat BBQ a lot and I've never had anything like it. Dobbs makes their own Strawberry Shortcake in the restaurant. Only order these things from Dobbs because nothing else is that good. In fact, I would highly recommend carryout because the restaurant is usually not clean, no atmosphere, and probably has the same booths and chairs and tables from 1946 when it first opened. It really needs a remodeling or an update. Beside those items I mentioned that are outstanding, it really isn't all that good. That's why I gave it a 3-star because they do those things really well...but the restaurant and everything else is just not good. read more

I really wanted this place to be a 4 star place, but at the end of my meal it just didn't add up. I ordered pull pork, and my wife had the ribs. Here ribs were really good, but the pulled pork tasted really good at first, and the more I ate the more I disliked it. Before our meal came out they gave me a cup of stew, that was amazing. My Granddaddy adored this joint and I remember the barbecue was incredible to me when I was a child. That being said, the past two experiences I've had with Dobbs have simply been mediocre. I'm a butcher by trade and agree with a lot of the reviews on here, the barbecue tastes reheated and dry. Oh my goodness. This is a must on our vacation agenda when we travel south. I love their chipped pork sandwich with a baked potato and cole slaw. YUM! Pair it with a sweet tea and you're good to go. The restaurant itself is old and not updated, yet that totally adds to the experience! The waitresses are always extremely friendly and the pies are totally delicious. Worst ever, how does this place stay open? The Bar-B-Que is a near soup mash up that is unappealing to they eye and also to the stomach. The Famous Strawberry Shirt Cake is biscuits covers in frozen strawberry goo. Don't stop. Keep driving North or South. You will find better. read more

I basically never write reviews. But for this I had to. My friends and I ate here 2 and a half years ago and we have been unable to deal with the emotional baggage since then and we felt that the world needed to know of our catastrophic experience to save future souls. If a sewage plant catered food, it would be Dobb's BBQ. I can not explain the agonizing pain my friends and I went through when we ate here. We walked in and it looked like it had not be renovated since the 70's. We saw the special of the day and tried to order it but were informed that it was only available for takeout. At this point, we should have left, we thought that would be the worst of it. We were terribly wrong. We sat down and ordered our food. While we were waiting for our food, I had to use the bathroom. Let me tell you, I know rats who would not dare inhabit this dusting pigsty. The toilet was nasty, the lighting was dim, and the sink was tilted. Now, back to the table I went, only to find out the food was just as unappetizing as the bathroom. My friend had ordered the camp stew, thinking it was going to be like brunswick stew, he was shocked at what was delivered. What he received was like brunswick stew but with everything good about brunswick stew taken out and replaced with sadness in the form of watery, brown, tomato paste. The next thing that arrived were our sandwiches and sides. Everything tasted like it had been frozen and then boiled in hot water to heat up. The pork sandwich was one of the worst things I had ever put in my mouth. The pork was so watery that it made the buns soggy. I couldn't tell where the pork ended and buns began. Next on the list was the ribs. Just plain bad. The baked beans were thick, clumpy, and better resembled cement than baked beans. Fries are easy to make, right? Well not for Dobb's. It tasted like they were taken out of a freezer, shoved into a microwave for a bit too long, and then plopped onto the plate. To call them french fries would be an international hate crime. Despite their attempt to ruin Alabama bbq forever, the sweet tea was surprisingly good. Legend has it that when Jesus finished his 40 day fast, he was offered Dobb's, and said "no thanks, I'll go another 40 days." The only way I would go back to Dobb's is if I was on a date and didn't want a second one. One of the symptoms of the coronavirus is loss of taste. Following that reasoning, I believe every Dobb's patron should be tested regularly. This experience has led to my friends and I favorite quote, wisdom that I will impart to you all: "Don't. Dine. At. If you love really good Bar-B-Q then look somewhere else. Dobbs has absolutely the worst Bar-B-Q in the South. I don't know where these people learned their craft but they need to start all over. The food here is the worst! I grew up in the South eating Bar-B-Q in dozens of places in the past 57 years of my life and Dobbs has to be right down at the bottom of my list. Nice people who work there but the quality of the food is terrible! Don't waste your time. I would suggest you try Hunt's restaurant located directly behind Dobb's. Lots of old worn out decor from the 60s and 70s which would have been fine if the food was good. BBQpork had little taste, I knew it was a problem when I couldnt smell the pit when I walked in but decided to try it anyway. Fries and onion rings were frozen from a bag, pork had no flavor and wondered if it as purchased precooked, adding salt helped some, the pork had no wood cooked flavor and bland. I give Dobbs two stars for nostalgia, none for food. It was terribly, unfortunately disappointing. Their Camp Stew is a version of Georgia's Brunswick Stew, but it was congealed, lukewarm, and the stringy pork suck to the spoon like glue. I also tried a chipped pork sandwich. The pork was just a mushy medium for getting subpar sauce in my mouth. There were some sort of homemade vinegar sauces on the table, but they simply looked dirty and unappealing, I chose to skip even testing them. The meat appeared to have been soaked in sauce then topped with sauce, a thick dark red, mildly spicy, sauce. The slaw was crisp, but bland. I have come to learn that bbq joints that serve fries as a primary side or a default side, typically fail to make good wood smoked meat. It happened again here, The pork plate comes with fries and I am sad to say they were about the best prepared item on the plate. Of the 90+ bbq joints I have tasted, this place is in the bottom 10%. They've been around forever, the character is there, they just need to step it up with the food. Heck the locals don't even flock there anymore, or so it would seem.
