Stopped here on the way to the beach. Billboard sign on the highway said it was very old and "world famous". I ordered the chipped bbq sandwich. It tasted like something out of a school cafeteria. I am a teacher so I know what cafeteria food tastes like. Yuck! The sauce was VERY bland, ketchup has more flavor. The french fries were very standard. The cole slaw was dry and unedible. Best things about the place: - the nice, very friendly waitress - the sweet tea. Honestly I would have been happier with lunch from Burger King and the like. I went to college in SE Alabama too long ago to think about and back then I would go down to Panama City, FL to the beach more weekends than not. I was recently back visiting friends/alma mater, so I decided to do that drive again. Back in college, Dobbs' was a mandatory stop and having grown even more fond of BBQ over the years (if it's possible for me to get MORE fond of it), I of course stopped in for lunch. It's neither a large nor pretentious place. Just a good, old time BBQ joint. It's clean, the staff are so friendly, and when you walk in, it smells GREAT!! Ok, a little "then vs now". 20 years ago, the servings were huge. A fair bit smaller now. The prices back then were definitely lower than now, but then everything's pricier than it was. The BBQ was great and now it's just good. My favorites, the chipped pork sandwich and the "camp stew" (Brunswick Stew by another name), were both still very tasty, but not as unbelievably delectable as I remember them. The BBQ sauce is the thin, slightly vinegary type you find in the Carolinas. Good, but not great. The meat has a good robust smokiness to it, which is a BBQ requirement for me and I feel I got a decent amount of food for what I paid. Dobbs' has been around for about a hundred years (literally), so they obviously do something right. To my mind, it's a good place for BBQ and a place I'd definitely stop very often if I still lived in the area, but I can't honestly say it's mind-altering BBQ. Just very good. But hey, that puts it ahead of most places that claim to be BBQ joints. I certainly recommend Dobbs' if you find yourself in Dothan. read more

After a long drive we were excited to see an authentic local barbecue joint as we drove through Dothan, AL on our way home. As we went inside, the first thing that comes into view is the old, dated wood paneling; not much else to say about the decor. We were quickly greeted by our waitress who took our drink order; as we mulled over the menu's offerings, the usual BBQ fair was to be found (but it was interesting that they had 'beef' on the menu instead of brisket) along with other offerings such as spaghetti w/ meat sauce and grilled cheese sandwich w/ fries (typically, these items are found on the kid's menu but not on the regular menu of a BBQ joint...hmmm....). As for our order, my wife had the baked potato with turkey and I had their three meat plate; with my dinner, I had 'beef', ribs and pork. As we waited for our order to arrive, the people that arrived just after us had already been served their meals (spaghetti with meat sauce and the grilled cheese plate); they must have been locals for they didn't even order as the waitress engaged in idle, small talk upon bringing them their drinks. More on that later. As our meals arrived, we couldn't have been more disappointed; the wife's potato was only half cooked (it was still crunchy) while my plate had two miserable little ribs with very little meat on them. The flavor was ok and tenderness was fine, but it seemed as if they cut their ribs in half (and as an amateur BBQ guy, I know a regular rib from a short rib/babyback/country style rib, etc). In regards to the pork and beef, they were both cubed instead of the usual offering of other BBQ joints (pulled & brisket). Visually, they were both off-putting; taste-wise, they probably had been sitting around for most of the day: flavorless, hard and dry. It's a shame for I had high hopes for this place. When the menu stated 'beef', it truly was beef (not brisket). Overall, our experience was very disappointing; Dobbs doesn't strike me as a new business...in fact, the old building & decor suggest they've been around for a long time so you would think they know how to make decent BBQ. So-so ribs along with not very good tasting cubed pork and beef offerings makes me scratch my head as to how they stay in business. A clear indicator should have been when the 'locals' order dinners that you would not associate with a BBQ restaurant....that alone says it all. I don't see ourselves driving though Dothan again; but rest assured if we do, we won't be frequenting Dobbs again. Get it together Dobbs! read more

I stopped here after seeing billboards for 100+ year old BBQ joint. I was driving from destin to Atlanta & really looking forward to some good BBQ. Next time I'll read the yelp reviews before spending $9 on a plate. The coleslaw was right out of a vat delivered by the cisco truck, the bread was a $.20 Hawaiian role- nothing to write home about. The stew was good, but I wouldn't call that Brunswick stew, might be personal preference. Now I can forgive all the above flaws for some seriously good pulled pork & sauce, but one bite of this & I knew there was no redeeming qualities. I have no clue how this place has been open for 100 years. The meat looked old, the mayo based coleslaw was warm and inedible, the fries were straight out of the freezer, and the sweet tea tasted like slightly sweetened tap water. Ok well, to start, we had lots of room on the side of the building to pull our truck and camper in while traveling. We had to go around Dothan and thought this would be an easy pull off the road. We ordered BBQ pork sandwiches and baked beans. The baked beans were very, very good. The pork was average. It wasn't bad in my opinion, it just didn't stand out as above average. The service was really good. We walked into the side that said take out orders and walked up to a counter to place our order. There was about a 15 min wait for the order at 11 am. It looked as though they had already received some large call ins (like $200 orders) so maybe that's why. Anyway, I'm from Memphis and it definitely isn't like the pork sandwiches I had growing up but I didn't think it was bad either. I thought the baked beans were very good. They had pieces of pork in them and had a nice sauce. I think BBQ is a very personal thing, as what one person likes, another doesn't. I can't stand Kansas City BBQ, yet it's famous. Anyway, The total was $19 for two sandwiches and two small orders of baked beans plus one coke. Dobbs is an old fashioned BBQ restaurant that may look a bit dated on the surface, but serves some solid southern BBQ that is worth the stop. I had the sandwich platter with the coleslaw, it was well cooked and the slaw was some of the best I've had. My girlfriend had ribs which were also cooked well and fell right off the bone. I will admit, it wasn't the best BBQ I've ever had but it was delicious and the establishment itself was quaint and interesting for a New Yorker who was passing though. Second time eating at Dobbs. Walking into Dobbs is like a step back in time. The decor hasn't been updated in decades, but it's very clean and neat. This is part of the charm- if you aren't looking for that sort of thing go somewhere else. The service is excellent. They bring you a pitcher of both water and sweet tea as soon as you sit down, sometimes before they take your actual drink order. The sweet tea is heavenly, I'm convinced it has rejuvenating powers. Your server will likely be very polite and attentive, as well as knowledgeable. They will keep those pitchers full as long as you're seated, and you won't have to wait long at all for your food. I got the bbq sandwich plate, which came with french fries and a choice of slaw or beans. The beans were my choice and were perfection. I wolfed them down. My buddy got the slaw and said it was very fresh and tasty. A few minutes later our food came out. The sandwiches are massive and so tasty. Sweet and tangy bbq sauce on pulled pork. I usually have good portion control and wouldn't have eaten a large sandwich like this in one go, but I was done eating everything in 10-15 minutes. The sandwich came with fries which were also very tasty, if they came from a frozen bag they were of high quality. I doubt they had been frozen though. Mmmmm. The bbq sauce also compliments the sweet tea very well, I highly recommend choosing it as your beverage. My fiancé and her friend got the bbq ribs plate, which was also very tasty. The meat literally slides off the bone, these are ribs done right. The table will also have extra bbq sauce and home made hot sauce ready for you. We didn't have room for desert unfortunately. But the food was excellent. The last time I came here I ordered an additional sandwich to eat for dinner on the road. I was too full this time. I sort of think that people who don't enjoy the food here are simply turned off by the old timey decor and need to pay more attention to what their taste buds are saying. Best barbeque I have tried in the area. On my recent visit, the place was packed, even late in the afternoon. Judging by all the fellow out of towners that were eating here with me, the word is out. They have a main dining area and a separate take-out window for folks on the go. Dobbs even sells their hot sauce (careful, there's some habanero in there) for a few bucks. The wait staff and the guys at the register are super friendly and go out of their way to make you feel at home. My overall rating for this place is fair at best. I have had worse and certainly had better. In fact the food served at this place basically reminded me of your average run-of-the-mill so called BBQ places you have probably been in a thousand times as well. It seems like basic fast-food bbq to me. I had the Pork Sandwich with fries and It seemed like the fries were too old to be served. The BBQ sauce seemed like basic commercial sauce that you see everywhere (and in every store shelf bottle) and I guess the meat was cooked ok. I just could not find anything exciting about my experience that explained the massive crowds I have seen here on so many occasions I thought about stopping, but simply drove on due to the crowds. I have noticed this restaurant going through town frequently as they have a really great, very high visibility location if you are passing through Dothan going South. Most of the time I seem to pass by here there were so many cars at the place I figured it might be overcrowded if I am trying to eat quick while on the road. I recently had the opportunity to finally try this place and I was really excited after learning that this was a 100 year old business. If you are satisfied with just ok, I guess this might fill the bill. I will rate the service as basically just ok as well as my server seemed like she had somewhere else to be as I saw very little of her in the area where I was seated. The restaurant is very old. If you are looking for nostalgia, yes it could take you back to the sixties in my opinion. Overall I was just really disappointed considering what I was expecting and even had heard from a few of the locals I know in this area. I wish this business well as It looks like they have probably raised generations of their own with this place. My overall suggestion to them and something to think about. - First I might suggest to really look at what they are serving to the customer and get out around your Great State of Alabama and see what some other Famous and maybe even not so Famous places are serving as I think a re-evaluation of your current product might be in order. - Second, please remember that without a customer, you have no business. I was overall reminded of this fact in my visit in your establishment as I do not feel you really earned my visit. I felt really disappointed in my overall experience. In all fairness to you, my order was prepared accurately and served fairly promptly which is how I justify awarding the 3 star rating. If my experience did not meet this minimum criteria, I would have to given a lower star rating based my overall dining experience with you or lack thereof. Stopped by on our way home from vacation thinking a place that had been in business for almost 100 years would have their barbecue recipe down. We were sadly mistaken. Should have read reviews before eating here. The restaurant is dirty from floor to ceiling, plates looked like they were not washed well, and the food was mediocre at best. The food really was terrible, not one of us ate more that a few bites. This is the nastiest restaurant we've ever been in. They are doing a disservice to the name of barbecue. read more

I used to occasionally visit Dobbs 20 years ago ... I had heard it went downhill, but I didn't realize how far. Not only was it really dirty inside - think caked on dust on light fixtures, but the food was pretty icky. No meat was pulled ... think chopped finely. Beef was the worst. Guess it's easier to toss it in a machine. Mac n cheese - think velvetta. Cole slaw - I'm thinking same kind of chopping machine as the meats ... same tiny particle consistency. Decided to stop because of a relatives recommendation and unfortunately it did not live up to his comments. We stopped at lunch and it was not busy the to go window was fairly busy though, we both ordered the lunch combo, the two ribs I got were tougher than some beef Jerky I didn't even eat the second one it was extremely tough. Moved on to the chopped beef it had some smoke flavor but wasn't that great and the barbecue was ok at best it didn't meet my expectations at all and they put their sauce on top of all three which to me seemed like they were trying to disguise the over cooked dryness. They give you sauce on the table it would be nice if you could do it yourself because the sauce is really sweet. read more

A nice and friendly mom-and-pop barbecue restaurant. We were visiting from out of town and my boyfriend was interested in trying some authentic southern pulled pork- he thought it was great. The sandwich portion size was large enough to where he didn't even need to order a side. I don't eat meat, but the sweet tea was on point and I appreciated the meatless alternatives on the menu. I also had to try "Mrs. Dobb's Homemade Strawberry Shortcake," which did not disappoint! Probably the best I've ever had. Restaurant decor is a little dated inside, but it feels homey and welcoming. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE - HORRIBLE...! WILL NEVER RETURN. We just moved here and I am staying at the Olympia Golf Spa & resort hotel, so Dobbs BBQ is on my way home from the Farley Nuclear plant. I stopped in on my way home from work and it was around 7:30 pm. I ordered a full BBQ chicken with some side items and asked for BBQ sauce on the side. In all, my order was around $30. THERE WAS NO BBQ SAUCE IN THE BAGS...! i couldn't call them. This Olympia hotel has no phones and our cell phone is getting less than 1-bar. So I came in the next night to get more food. I explained that they did not put the BBQ sauce in the bag and I requested extra. The manager just said, "I am sorry". He didn't offer ANYTHING, no discount on my next order or anything for HIS people screwing up. I said, "Sir, I came in here to order more food and I am a potential customer for years to come, but if you don't do something to make up for messing up on our order, which we didn't like without BBQ sauce, then I will never return and will tell others". The Manager just said to me, "I'm sorry you feel that way and have a good night." I am a professional, a Manager, distinguished type, so I don't give people the perception that I am the dishonest type. This Manager should be FIRED for not valuing customers. Came to Alabama for my son BMX national. We asked out hotel where's a good home cook bbq place around and they recommended this place. It was delicious. Bbq sauce was very different from Southern California but but very tasty and good. I left tired and full. The service was very southern and perfect as well.
