Not really a fan of the East Village anymore, generally speaking. It has a certain energy to it, the kind that would've fit me perfectly in my early 20s or back in my military days, but I've outgrown that particular gear. This place is the quintessential East Village dive, and it leans into that identity hard: a little trashy, more than a little worn in, and proud of it. Fitting, since it's been holding down that corner of Avenue A since 1994 as the self-proclaimed only honky tonk bar in the city, cowboy boots nailed to the ceiling, country jukebox, the whole bit.Good place to kick off a night, especially with the pool table in back. The competition here isn't exactly stiff. If you actually know how to play, you can hold the table for a long stretch against people who think they've got next. I ran through a few groups without much of a fight before eventually just handing it over to whoever was up, since nobody was giving me an actual game. Good beer selection, loud as hell, packed, and cheap across the board. Exactly what a dive bar should be, even if it's not really my scene these days. read more

We tip here" I gave her a tip and then she claimed I under paid for the drink even tho I know I counted right and she made me pay more. Legendary country bar in the East Village. They have a CD jukebox filled with mostly classic country and oldies music. Beer prices are not as reasonable as they once were, but you can get a Bud draft for $7 or Rolling Rock for $6. Bartenders are much more friendly than they were several years ago. Definitely a more welcoming vibe. They prefer you pay in cash, and at certain times or busy nights they are known to switch to cash only. Great bar to meet people too. read more

This is the place to go when you're looking for a fun night out in the city. It's a country themed dive bar that's been around since the early 90s. The decor is very relaxed with plenty of seats and stools. They have a pool table in the back and a Big Buck arcade towards the front entrance. They carry Yuengling and Rolling Rock which was great. I hadn't seen those beers stocked in bars since the early 2000's. Their tap system is ice cold and their drinks have always been on point. I should have written this review several years ago but frankly, you find a good dive, and you sometimes don't want to let folks in on it. But the last 3 years have been tough on small bars so here goes. Staff is great, prices are decent for the LES and if your pleasant and not a jerk, they'll take care of you. We were in the area waiting on our rsvp & this place was the closest so we came in here to kill some time. Charminggg place u don't know if u r waking into a bar or some place u may not ever come out off .. it has quite the broken down entrance. Talk about DIVE bar to the T !! Crazy all over the place decorations don't know if or what holiday they are "celebrating" all seasons hanging! Just one thing way too many rules posted! CASH only what a pain it's a bar so it's a bit annoying & more so now a days a bit of an inconvenience to be cash only but of course there is an ATM available. No seating at first then we got lucky w a seat at the bar, ok specials but not on anything good we had some beers I had the Raging bitch good beer bitter tasting but good alcohol content my company had Long Hammer IPA good as well. This place has quite the vibe, lay back not too much going on , pool table on the side & enough TV's to catch the games. First things, first: Let's put this in context. We're not putting this bar up against the bar at The St. Regis, for Christ's sake. This is the quintessential dive bar. Ugly. Sticky. Smelly. You would rather vomit in your mouth then have to do it in their scary bathroom. Yum. This is the charm, however. And if the cans of PBR don't make you think that you've sunk to a new level, the fact that they don't even bother to sacrifice valuable refrigerator space for them will (they are kept in an Igloo cooler behind the bar). As far as dives go, this is top notch and is certain to be fun after 6 PBRs . My only complaint: As its divey reputation has proliferated and the LES has gone through a slight gentrification it's now filled with a lot of yuppies and ex-fratties who go just so they can feel what it's like to slum it every once in a while. I'm a yuppie myself and, goddamn it, this is where I used to go to get away from the rest of you...oh well. read more

Actually, I was in here during the day a long time ago; inexplicably they had food on the menu at the time and my friend was eating this blueberry cake. During a semester or two of college, I came here every Tuesday for the $5 all you can drink beer special. I have no idea if that's still going on. I'm from Georgia--most of my NYU friends were not. They tended to be surprised when I would sing along to country songs even I didn't know I knew. Loud music, a young crowd, and a fun jukebox are the things I remember most. I went to Doc's a few days ago with friends. We just happened upon it and I requested that they feed my nostalgic dreams. It was okay. Too loud, not crowded, and I felt too bad beginning to explain all the silly and fun time I'd had there to people who hadn't been with me. So oh well. In 2001, I'd say go there for SURE. Now I can't say one way or the other, but I know it's worth checking out since it's so different from other bars in NYC. Country without being 100% gimmicky. read more

I know it's cheap, and I know it's a classic dive bar, but EEK! The cowboy hats, country music (I know, I was there, I should have known what I was getting myself into). I went to meet a friend who was meeting his alcoholic booty call, but that's another story for another time. The bathroom was a dump, more-so than any dive I have ever been to. I need to reel it back though, because I know that this is the vibe they are going for. The bartenders were extremely friendly and quick on the refills, not to mention the hot bar-back with the afro (it's real we asked) and blue eyes. When I'm home in CA during Christmas, my friends and I get really drunk and watch Tombstone featuring Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. Some people are calling it a Texas roadhouse style bar. Call it what you want, but this was for me a wrong turn and an interesting experience. The perfect ambiance to take a small group of friends looking for a dive bar that you don't have to squeeze into. I love dives, and this one is definitely a go-to. Sit in a bench, sip on some beer and have great conversation. You almost feel like you are slipping into a a little piece of the south. Have I never reviewed Doc Holliday's before? OK, well, you don't need to be told that most people's nights end, rather than start, at DH. The long-time dive bar has withstood the test of time (and whatever bodily fluids and other atrocities might have petrified within its wall over the years). There's a very good jukebox dispensing honky-tonk country and rock and other outlaw classics, with plenty of Johnny Cash. Beers and liquor are cheap. You won't be impressed by the beer selection unless you really miss college beers, but $3 Genny Cream Ale will keep your engine going. If you're 25 and under, this place will be heaven. For others, it's a nice stop on the whistle-wetting tour of your younger years. read more

Out of all the bars in New York (and we all know there are a zillion) this one is hands down my all time favorite for a low key night (regardless of whether it involves heavy drinking!!!!). Between the ZZ Top on the juke box and the Pabst at the bar (which I have never purchased....something a little too freshman year frat-party about it), it's like a little piece of heaven, right on Avenue A! Of course it's a dive bar, and never pretends to be anything but a dive bar....but it succeeds so amazingly handsomelt at being just that!! Joanna is hands down the top bartender in the city (she usually works Friday nights)...I haven't ordered a drink by name in ages (read: walk in, wave hi, and ask for "something sweet and strong enough to kick my ass pretty good")!! Also, there's always the joy of dancing on the bar with Jo and the rest of the amazing crew there, or just shooting pool with the regulars. It's about the only bar in the EV that hasn't been taken over by NYU transplants and Millennials Probably because it's disgusting and the barkeeps make sure to keep it that way. I'm no holy man but I guess I could call this place church. Doc's is about as good as it gets. Surprisingly it is not just the $3 twisted tea's that draw me to this gem of a watering hole. It's everything. Where to begin. Usually the night starts out praying a corner table is open. I really can't get comfortable unless I am sitting there. Sometimes it opens up quickly but if not I barter with whoever has claimed it so it is never an issue. Once that is resolved, I make my way to the bar where the twisted tea flows like Poland Spring in Poland. This is where the night starts to take off. If no one is playing Buck Hunter, you better believe I take advantage of that and win every single time because come on, I am a Buck Hunter legend and have not faced a worthy challenger. If I am feeling risky I then try and get involved with some pool, partnering up with one of the boys and trying to take down whoever holds the table. I am bit more humble with my pool game and will begrudgingly admit I have lost two games ever. In between all this my challis is filled with twisted tea while mixing in shots of Jameson. Sometimes me and the boys post up for a couple hours, other times we stay till they pull down the iron gates. No matter what, I always leave smiling and happy I chose Doc's! Amen! read more

If you like dive bars, you must go to Doc Holliday's and I'd also say you must do a combo The Library/Doc Holliday's combo night as well. The two bars are pretty similar: country music, ridiculously cheap beer and both crowds more than ready to get drunk. The time I was there though, I'd say Doc Holliday's has more of the "you're getting f*cked up, and you're getting f*cked up RIGHT NOW" vibe to it. So basically, if you're looking to get f*cked up RIGHT NOW, go to Doc Holliday's. If making it past midnight is more your cup of tea, there are other dive bars to check out. read more

Listen, I normally only write reviews to talk about how much I love a place but last night was truly horrifying. There was a platinum blonde behind the bar who literally ignored me whenever I tried to order even though I was sitting at the bar itself. She had told me I needed to keep ordering until I hit a minimum which I was planning on doing and was planning on keep my tab open ordering away, except she literally would not come back over to take any other drink orders. When I finally got to order a second drink she rolled her eyes and turned around without saying anything. Whatever, that's her right to not treat me well but I didn't want to tip on that. I drew a line through the tip place and wrote the total and signed. She came back with the receipt and a pen and said "If you aren't going to tip you have to write zero on that line" Which isn't accurate but ok I wrote 0. She then took the receipt and passed it to the other bartender who then came over and said "what do you want so we get a tip? Do you want a shot or what? What do you want?" At this point, I'm annoyed I'm being harassed and just tell them I'll tip them whatever they want, 20% would be $3 so I'll give them that or double for them to leave me alone. She keeps saying no no no what do you want what do you want and pours me a shot I said I did not want multiple times. I just wanted to finish my drink in peace and not tip on rude service. No idea what I ended up tipping since they told me I had to but I am annoyed I spent any money to get treated so poorly. read more
