I've been searching for years to find someone who specializes in curly hair. Finally stumbled across Doc's Curly Hair Haven here on yelp. Looked over Kristen's portfolio and booked. I had my consultation and knew right away I wanted to book with her. She is very much educated and knowledgeable about working with curly hair. She even taught me a few things to do with my hair to make sure it stays and looks healthy. I wanted a full coverage honey blonde but really wanted her opinion since I have dark hair and never dyed it in over a decade. She was very honest and gave me options. If you're looking for just that expert, look no further than Kristin at Aura-she is a curly hair wizard! I went in wanting just a trim-I'm trying to grow my hair out, and want to keep length. Kristin listened to me, and told me what pieces she would cut and which ones she would leave. She showed me the back where my layers had started looking very disjointed and made a recommendation to cut a little more and even things up. I trusted her and her expertise, so I said "go for it!" The outcome was amazing-everything looked blended and the curls fell where they are supposed to, not haphazardly like they were before. A true "curly cut" is done when your hair is dry so they can see the curl pattern, how your hair lays, etc. Kristin does this and then follows it up with a relaxing shampoo/conditioner. The next day, after getting my hair cut yesterday afternoon, my hair is vibrant, my curls are alive and well and I feel great. I will definitely be back as a repeat customer. read more

Really love this place! My son has curly hair and it has always been a challenge to get it cut. Curls get frizzy really easy! And for a kid, you don't really want to buy a whole lot of hair product and use all those chemicals on the hair. Anyway, we found this place on accident when we were coming to Kohl's (next door). Kristin was able to fit as in that day and she was so friendly. We learned how to take care of his hair and give him defined curls. It was a cut + a very educational class. An eye opener! We bought the conditioner to try ($20) and that alone has worked great. We are also trying the shampoo now, let's see if that helps! The cut + class was definitely worth what we paid. ($40 for a kid, I imagine it's more for an adult = more hair). We just had a quick trim and reshape for $20. It's definitely worth every penny! Any other regular salon cuts his hair while it's wet without giving it a shape. Then curls get dry and shrink and it just looks like a big lollipop! Not good. The haircut here is given based on how curly/thick your hair is. Love it! I recommend this place if you have curly hair that gets frizzy easily, especially if you don't want to go crazy on buying hair product. You can have the pretty curls but keeping things very low maintenance :) it has worked for us! I even use the conditioner in my hair (wavy) and it looks really piece-y! read more

I had finally had enough of wasting my mornings, frying my hair into oblivion, and hunted down a curly hair salon. I have been to see Kristin twice now, and have not regretted it. I didn't have a great idea of what I wanted, but showed her a couple of photos and she ran with it. She is DevaCurl certified and does dry cuts, which no stylist I've been to in the past who claimed to know how to cut curly hair has done. Her haircuts combined with using the CurlyGirl method of taking care of my hair has led to some easier mornings and lots of compliments and the feeling that I'm not fighting with my hair every day. I rated the salon one star down because the general vibe of the salon is a bit sparse - there isn't much decor, the lighting isn't great, and it doesn't have the more hip or glamorous feel I'm used to in salons where the cuts are a bit pricier. She has curly hair herself, which made me feel comfortable that she would assist me in finding the best style possible. This is the place to go for curly hair cuts! The stylists here use a different method, where they cut your hair while it's dry so that they can really work with your curls. While it takes quite a bit longer, the final product is always amazing. My stylist this time was Max, and he was awesome. I told him that I only get my hair cut once a year (since the cuts are a bit on the pricey end) and he gave me layers that look great now and will grow out to look natural later on. He got me to try an A-line cut, which I had never considered with curls, but it seriously looks amazing! A haircut with anyone here is well worth the money, but definitely consider Max when you're scheduling! read more

I was very anxious having moved from far away and knowing all too well the butcher/hairdressers I would have to go through before I found one I liked. Ivy Cecy, an exotic Brazilian beauty, was my hairdresser. All I had to do was look at her hair to know I was in good hands. She has a full head of super curly hair. Don't let the "curly hair" specialist turn you off. My hair is mostly a frizzy mess and my daughter has absolutely straight hair. Our stylist Michelle works miracles!! Especially on my problem hair. I have NEVER been pressured into buying products or services I did not want. I have gone to Michelle for over 5 years and have recommended her to friends and family and will continue to do so. I have wavy hair but have spent years straightening it. I occasionally try to make it curly with all sorts of cheap products and lots of heat. It's looks a little stiff but it's all I've know how to do. To keep it straight I use even more heat and cheap products. So, I was in SLC for the movie festivals and needed my eyebrows shaped. I happened by Aura Salon and the owner said she could do that. As we were chatting, she mentioned that I actually have curly hair, not frizzy hair. She explained that all of the problems I'm having with that frizz and other things was a result of not handling my curls correctly. By the time I left, I had had a new hair trim to release my curls, a nonsulfate shampoo, condition and gel, and a head full of curls! And knowledge on how to do all of this myself to stay looking great. OMG! I could not believe it! NO FRIZZ. My hair was now gorgeous flowing curls. I thanked her profusely and started to cry, (I sucked it up, so not to embarrass myself). She changed my life. My hair has been such a source of daily aggravation and no hair dresser ever had any solution for me. I had resorted to using afro products just to plaster it down in the Florida humidity. I am a wavy- haired sister and I love Aura. Beth is my stylist and she took the time and energy to discuss with me what I hoped could happen with my hair. She is realistic, gentle, and thoughtful. She listened to my concerns and checked in with me as I was viewing my style in the mirror in order to make sure she had met my goals. My style has stayed workable through the last three weeks since I saw her. I am not running to the brush every five minutes to get my hair out of my eyes. Beth is a great stylist. It's so personal to tell someone what you like and don't like about yourself. She did not judge or tease me for my concerns and I appreciate that.
