They have fire pits! Which is great if you live in LA and don't want to drive all the way down to Bolsa Chica or up towards Malibu! They don't have a ton though so if you want to have a bonfire in the middle of summer, get there EARLY. I had a bonfire July 22nd (a Saturday) and by 7:30, all the pits were gone. My boyfriend got there at 6:30 to reserve a pit and he told me a good portion of the pits were already taken, maybe about 10 were left. So go get some coffee and get there early! A lot of people in the reviews are bothered by the airplanes from LAX. I personally thought it was pretty cool (: I don't mind noise (my house is next to train tracks) so if you don't mind noise, you're good to go! I just thought it was pretty cool watching the planes take off The water is dirty...you can see black particles in the water and bits and pieces of trash. Not my favorite things about the beach. Also, there was tar or gunky stuff randomly throughout the beach (maybe fuel?) I don't know, but it would get stuck to our foot and take a lot of scrubbing at home to get it off. There's a pretty big parking lot, $12 parking. There's also free street parking if you can find a spot. But to be honest, this is a good place to have a bonfire if you're looking for one. They allow grill (charcoal or propane) as long as you grill inside the fire pit. I didn't see any parties that had problems putting their grill in the fire pit. They allow firewood (I know some beaches -ahem Newport- that only allow charcoal in the pits) so it's pretty cool. It doesn't seem like they limit the height of your flames. Lifeguards are good at their job. The lifeguard near us was always patrolling the water and whatnot, so it's pretty safe. Really nice place. The beaches and facilities were very clean. The Rv park was ok not a lot of space to maneuver. The front was a nightmare can't park in front of the gate while you go in to get your tags to stay. The entire process of registering was horrible. Once you finally get in it's relaxing and nice. We were ready for The airplanes taking off over our heads thanks to the reviews but it really wasn't that bad. Actually it was nostalgic and not too load. read more

It's old. It's by the airport. But it comes with great memories. There's a designated parking lot if you want to unload some stuff and play with the family. I think it's very empty on the weekdays. Come early, leave early. It's right next to playa, so there's some surfers! read more

Right in front of the beach, endless bike trail, trendy manhattan beach & redondo within jogging or beach biking distance. Bon fire pits right there! One car limit per RV or trailer. Security right at top vigilant!!! 2 dog runs at both ends. Showers w warm water but you gotta keep pushing that button-- saves water. Bathrooms: 2 stalls & 1 sink... But there are 3 locations for those. No one on the sandy beach but birds! Beautiful rocky area (breaker) & el segundo beach w volleyball nets & gorgeous surfers in the icy cold water... I went for a run every morning or cycled to watch these man-maids paddle their boards & navigate te foamy salty waves. Seemed like north shore just colder & smaller waves. I like this beach because: 1) parking is easy, though it does cost $13.00 (cash or card) 2) fire pits!! Who doesn't like a bond fire and the end of the day?! 3) it's pretty quiet most of the time, which is nice. 4) it's clean 5) the water is nice and not as choppy as some other beaches 6) there are bathrooms and showers close by, perhaps not the cleanest for a beach, but not terrible for a beach Bring the family and friends and eat and swim and lay out. We have been coming here with family for 10 years but this year was the worse. The sites used to be cleaned(swept and any trash from the previous user removed) this year they were filled with peoples left over trash. Staff is rude. Make sure when you pay for something here you make a reservation you stay the whole time because you will not get a refund if you leave early they love to keep your $$ with no good explanation it seems they make up rules as they go along. My friend got here around 11 am to snag a spot on a Saturday. It was our first time doing a bonfire and it was great. Hung out all day with a small group and started the fire around 5 pm. They have a shop with essentials like firewood by the bathrooms but it's a little on the pricier side, so definitely come prepped with your own. It got a little windy and overcast for a brief period so that was a mild challenge getting the fire started. Next time around, we'd probably grab a spot closer to the bathrooms out of pure laziness, but in general there isn't a bad spot. Parking was $13 because it was the weekends and during high season. But cheaper on weekdays and low season. If you spend all day there though, it's definitely worth it. Someone did ask to share our firepit with us, which was only a tad annoying and truly a white man thing to do. Went last night to host a party there. It is March 30th, a Saturday night. A friend went at 1:30pm to get a fire pit and there were already a ton of people there. Granted, it's spring break for some schools, It's Saturday and the weather was pretty nice-high of 72 for the day. First pit available on non-RV side was at the farthest end of the farthest (2nd) parking lot. A few pits at the end were still available. By 3pm they were all taken. A little bit of a trek to the bathrooms but not too bad. From the main entrance, for those who didn't want to park and just got dropped off it was a long long walk--maybe 20 minutes! Bummer thing for those who wanted to get dropped off closer, the parking attendants insist you pay the $8 parking and there are no refunds, even if you leave right away. Anyway, once we got everything out, the evening was really pleasant. The pits are decently close to the parking lot, which is nice. We burned 5 bundles of wood (good firewood from Ralph's--don't buy the airy cheap wood from Home Depot!) over a 5 hour period. At the end of the night, the pits say to just let the fire burn out on its own. Don't pour sand over it, as it makes the pits shallower! The wind picks up in the late afternoon but once the sun sets it's not windy and really nice. The pit is so big that a good number of people can sit around. If you wanna toast marshmallows, get those lonnng extendable skewers. I bought 30" bamboo skewers from amazon that were pretty thick and they worked perfect so you don't have to get too close to the fire! We didn't cook other food in the fire but I've heard you can bring a small grill to play inside the pit. Oh, I also ordered a glow sticks, a light-up football and light-up volleyball from Amazon (not just glow in the dark, but actual red LED lights inside) and those were a hit! Plus we brought our own volleyball net. Also, we brought camping lanterns as it's pretty dark once the sun sets! On the website I read the beach closes at 10 and it's supposed to be strictly enforced but we didn't finish cleaning and loading up til 10:45 and many groups were still going strong! I randomly came across this beach while GPSing to Manhattan beach but got too lazy to drive the whole distance lol but thank goodness for being lazy because we came across a gem! Free and easy parallel parking on the main street, granted it was a Friday, there were a lot of spots open. Coming from someone who lives in the Bay Area where the San Francisco waters are too cold, Santa Cruz is alright, but spoiled by the beaches in Hawaii, I actually really enjoyed this beach. Soft sand and not a lot of people when we went. There's a strip of cement for people who want to walk/run/bike. But the water! Clear enough to see my feet when I was about chest deep. No huge strands of slimy kelp/seaweed that freak you out whenever it touches your ankle lol. The sand in the water was soft as well, it wasn't rocky or full of pebbles which makes it hurt to be in the water. The waves were nice and big, and even better that they often came back to back to back. If you're a swimmer or just enjoy spending hours in the water jumping or diving through the waves, then you'll like this beach (yes I know the waves change). Last but not least, there is an airport nearby so you can watch airplanes fly over you while you're in the water or bumming it on the shore. Not only that, but the best part is that it's noisy so it keeps the seagulls away! Lol if you're like me, the type of person that your only beach essentials are a blanket and sunblock, then this is the beach for you. read more

LA's crappiest beach, IMO. Here you will know how Lawrence of Arabia felt in the vastness of the desert (not appealing to me). Some people like the fire pits at night. Not me. I lived on Venice Beach for 2 years, half a block from the sand, on Santa Monica Beach for 2 years & Redondo Beach for more than 3 years. I've cycled every foot of the beach bike path multiple times & probably have walked most of the sand between Palos Verdes & Malibu. I figure that's what qualifies me to write this review, haha. I see Yelp events consistently held at Dockweiler, and I wonder......why? It's desolate. There's nothing around there you can walk to, so you gotta haul in all your food & supplies. Then you hope to choose a day when you're not downwind from the Smellsegundo water treatment facility, 'cause it's powerful. Your views at Dockweiler are of smoke stacks and industrial buildings. Then you got the noise and the air pollution from planes taking off over your head. LAX is right there, just over the hill. Not very peaceful. Alternatives to Dockweiler: Starting at the southernmost tip of LA, San Pedro: It's rocky coastline where you have to descend down steep paths from the bluffs, all the way through Palos Verdes. Good for surfing apparently, but of no interest to me other than for views. Torrance Beach: Yes, Torrance connects with the ocean at the far south end of Redondo Beach. It's my secret cove, where I watch kitesurfers. You have to walk in, so it's uncrowded & lovely. Mostly just locals know about it. Redondo Beach: Meh. Don't bother. It's for views, not so much for playing on the sand. Hermosa Beach: All about volleyball. Lots of cool eateries & bars & shops, spitting distance from the sand. I love it in the morning. Surf near the pier. Oh and....I would not go in the water at any LA beach without a wetsuit, so my evaluations have nothing to do with water quality as far as bacterial or other contaminants. And we all know to stay away from storm drains after a rain, on every beach. Manhattan Beach: LA's best, IMO. The stretch of sand north of the MB Pier is pristine. There are volleyball nets here & also near the pier. It's just south of Dockweiler, so given a choice, why not go here? There's surfing near MB Pier. And you've got Manhattan Village right there - tons of shops, restaurants, bars. Parking can be a bitch if you don't arrive early in the day on a weekend, and yeah....by comparison, you got free street parking along Vista del Mar by Dockweiler.....but for good reason. Who wants to go there when you can be here. El Segundo Beach: Behind the power plant, it's rocky. Farther north, there's hang gliding. That's about it. Smelly sometimes, lousy views. Playa del Rey: Not bad, far from the best. You still got the planes overhead from LAX. Marina del Rey: Nice. But there are better choices, all things considered. Nothing to walk to for food, etc. However the jetty along the channel is a gorgeous place to walk, cherished by locals. Venice Beach: Surf at the rocky south end, but otherwise forget it as beaches go. As you get to the beach near the Venice Boardwalk, it gets better. But never go out on this beach after dark, except for the drum circle. Santa Monica Beach: The second best LA beach, IMO, is the wide stretch of sand at the Venice/SaMo border, in front of Sea Colony. There are beach parking lots galore, reasonably priced. And SaMo's Main St. is a block away, with cafes & shops & all you need in life. On Sunday morning, the Farmer's Market at Ocean Park & Main is not to be missed - it's a party with music & great food. The beaches near SaMo Pier, farther north, are not so clean and always too crowded. Veto. The SaMo Canyon area beaches are OK, but, there again, do not offer much in the way of restaurants you can walk to. Unless you want to climb the bluff & that's a hassle. Topanga & Will Rogers State Beaches: Nice for kitesurfing & such. Nice to visit in the evening, to contemplate & clear the head. Malibu: I love the 'Bu but the beaches are not my fave. They are narrow & parking is difficult, as is beach access in most places. Surfrider Beach is a good spot to see celebs, but it's close to the Malibu Lagoon that tends to be icky. Think runoff. Zuma Beach: I'm not experienced here. I don't see a reason to travel so far when I got Manhattan & SaMo closeby. So I consulted with a friend who swims at Zuma (Aubrey from Studio DNA). He likes Zuma because the water is cleaner farther north. He especially likes El Matador State Beach, says it's a bit of a trek down the stairs but the seclusion is worth the effort. So there you have it, as I see it. I can't imagine not living at the beach. I watch the beachcombing vehicles every morning, carefully tending the treasured sands. Although I love every part of LA, I think the beaches are its crowning glory. read more

I came here early Saturday to do my morning run, the place looks very inviting, clean and less crowded, little that I know that come lunch time the serene quiet place becomes "Shoreline buffet!" Families with their pop-up tent and fold-up chairs gather and bbq to their hearts delight, I would confidently say that this beach is a very family-oriented beach, perfect for a quick weekend getaway - if not for the intermittent zoom & boom of passing jetliners, I would say this beach is the perfect beach for a fun filled family time, however if watching ascending and descending planes is one of your hobbies then this beach is perfect for you! (Kinda cool though - but only for a while) Lot parking is $10.00, but there is free street parking! just make a right turn when Imperial hits Vista Del Mar, make sure to park properly and away from the red zones, parking enforcers are plentiful and on the prowl. I'd definitely come back to this beach not just to run on their cool paved trail but also to hang-out with friends and spend some silly time, watch the sunset and just enjoy the company around a bonfire. Tips for a fun October bonfire gathering: * Get there before sunset to make an available fire pit yours. At 4pm-ish, lots were available - but by 8pm most of them were taken. * Bring or wear warm layers. Summer's over! * Stake out a fire pit close to the BATHROOMS : D * Bring lots of firewood, matches and starting liquid or a Duraflame log * Bring simple, grillable foods: weenies or burgers, buns, condiments, corn on the cob, veggie kababs, marshmallows (and s'more fixings!). * Each person should have a blanket!! Seriously, if summer is over, it will get cold out there after the sunset. * Be stealthy about the alcohol - don't be flashy, because there are still laws against drinking in public. Same goes for the stuff that hasn't yet been legalized. * Get ready for the beach police to come around right about 10pm-ish to announce the closing of the beach. And know that the bathrooms will close shortly before that time! This is a great place for summer bonfires! Although this beach has tons of fire pits, it's usually pretty packed! It's a good idea to try to arrive around 4/5 PM to stake out a bonfire pit before it gets crowded at night! The fire pits are relatively clean and there are lots of trash cans located conveniently everywhere. One problem is the lack of bathrooms here! The last time we were here our fire pit was SO far from the bathroom that we had to drive one of our friends to the nearest bathroom for an emergency! There are fire pits, rentals for bikes, boogie boards and snacks on site. street parking is free, but then lot is not. I can't say much yet since I've only been here once. However, FYI there are fire pits! :) There is a parking lot for those who wants to pay, or parking on the street. A bit dangerous parking on the street, but if you do, please be careful! This is one of the gems of LA. It's kind of a local secret - the fact that you can drink (concealed) on a beautiful expanse of beach full of fire pits with planes taking off immediately overhead. It's a great view of the sunset, and music pervades the air as people blast music from their respective parties. A totally LA vibe in the best way possible. A few pointers. There's a parking lot at Imperial, but I recommend parking right along the elevated street on either side and walking down. The parking is not super cheap, and you spend a long time circling until you find a spot (at least in the summer). That lot can get quite full. Second pointer, if you want a firepit on a weekend, you best get there (or someone there) in the morning to reserve that fire pit. Get a really good friend, or TaskRabbit person. Don't forget to bring low chairs, firewood, and lots of drinks and food. Smores and hot dogs to roast are a must! read more

On our last day in LA, we wanted to remain close to the airport so we hung out at Dockweiler State Beach. It was such a peaceful beach with two trails so-to speak. I wasn't sure what each one was for, but there appeared to be bicyclists and walkers on both. In my opinion, this is a very low profile beach. Not much was happening except planes flying overhead every couple minutes, and I loved it. Plenty of parking available. For a state beach, the grounds did look to be lacking in maintenance. There was a pile of garbage in the sand. We walked past random single shoes here and there. I would have no problem returning especially when the fire pits are out! read more

Definitely and easily one of my favorite beaches to come to. For one, they allow bon fires and if you catch a good weather day its always a must do. The parking locations are also very convenient and not pricey as you would expect. There is also street parking during certain times of day. The beach here is also for the most part well kept and the restrooms as well. There are bathing stations for after you get out of salt water. Would definitely recommend this place if you are in the area and are looking for a spot to hang out with friends. read more

A little torn with this one. On one hand, it's the only place in the city where you can have beach bonfires, the sunset view is amazing, and the beach patrol is pretty lax on checking up on beach goers (drink up!). But on the other hand, it gets insanely crowded on weekends (and even a bit shady at times), the parking is now $12.50 (AWFUL), there are loud planes constantly flying overhead, and the spots get pretty gross at times and even dangerous (nails from wood and broken bottles). But if you do go, try to pick a weeknight (non summer) or Sunday night if you must. If you want more seclusion, take the 200 yard walk over to the RV park and use the fire pits in front of the lot there. It's always quieter and less crowded. I do enjoy this place with friends sometimes, but the parking price is getting out of hand! read more

I normally would cross Dockweiler state beach cause I'll be riding bikes through it to Playa Del Rey but tonight I was here for a Memorial Day party / bonfire. I already know that this isn't the cleanliest beach or the most quiet. LAX is East of us and every couple of minutes a plane is taking off. You have a choice of street parking or paid parking which we happily found street parking but remember the street parking is prohibited after 10pm when the beach itself closes. Dockweiler is one of two beaches I know of that has fire pits and if you can't find a pit I see people digging their own pit. During the day there is a lot of cops that patrol the area which makes me feel that much safer. To me this beach is ghetto fabulous. On this particular day there was more trash on the sand than other days I've ridden by but you will always see burnt wood or other fragments on this not so clean beach. The one good thing is if you have a camper or RV their are hookups for you and you can spend the night. read more

The only L.A. City beach, to my knowledge, that still has fire pits. Problem, though, is that there has historically been a lot of crime here; i.e., robberies, sexual assaults and car break-ins. I'm not sure what the current day statistics are, but you hear or read about crime at Dockweiler from time to time.. During the summer, you'll see a police presence in the evening; winter time, not so much, so use caution when coming here for a nighttime fire/picnic/marshmellow roast and have a lot of folks with you, which should keep you safer. read more

Mixed feelings here!! This is probably one of the only beaches that lets you have a bonfire. I have been here plenty of times. I am noticing that parking is getting very expensive. I recently came here on a Friday. Parking was $13. I was disappointed with a few things here. First, i am surprised that the people working there, or securities are not occaisonally monitoring the parking lots. It would not be much of a hassle to find parking but people are using parking spaces to actually grill. Hello?!! It is used to park cars not to grill. Also, that can be inconvenient for the cars parked right next to that. Second, It is such a bummer that the beach closes a 10:00pm when people have bonfires. It would be so much fun if they at least let people stay until 12:00am. Third, If people do not get out in 20 minutes of them closing, the cars will get cited. Hello, if people take a lot of stuff to the beach, which most people do, we need a lot more time than that in order for us to clean up and put everything away. There will be people that say this is a grimmy ghetto beach and those people would be exaggerating the truth. The Beach belongs to everyone...not just stuck up buttcracks. Come here If you like to take walks or work out. The Beach access is easy and parking is cheap. Dockweiler is also a nice place to catch a sunset and free your mind. The sand is kinda ratchet so if you plan to chill bring plenty of blankets and a cooler because otherwise your time here will suck. Also you should know The Beach is loved by the locals: People of Los Angeles. Dockweiler gets worse every year. If you're coming in the summer, especially on the weekend, you're better off going to someone's house with a pool. There is NO MORE FREE STREET PARKING. First 300 cars in the lot costs $5 to park and $13 the rest of the day. If you're not here by 5:30AM to reserve a pit, good luck. All the pits are taken by 6:15am. The gate to park in opens at 6am so I highly recommend bringing extra people to go down to reserve a pit while you're waiting to pay to get in. Around 5PM, they may stop allowing people to enter if the lot is full. People started to complain that they couldn't find a parking spot and were demanding their money back. I arrived at the stoplight entrance at 5:20ish. I didn't get back to the parking lot until 6:30ish. Not worth an hour wait just to get in and also pay $13 to park until 10pm. The beach is dirtier every time I come. Even with the machine that catches trash, it's still really gross. Save your time and money and go somewhere else. read more

am a double amputee I'm in a power wheelchair on Saturday 7/13/24 I can to your beach in a Access van your staff wouldn't allow the drive to take me to the location wherever my family members were having their celebration mind the driver and myself explained to your staff I was just being dropped off they insisted I pay the $13 or the van could not be allowed to enter when the next van can to pick me up I have to ride from area 52 lifeguard stand all the way back up to the entrance because once again the Access wasn't permitted to come down to pick me up even though he told them I was in a wheelchair and me having to ride that far was ridiculous I most certainly would like to be reimbursed and almost forgot to mention so of the family arrived in a Uber they didn't charge him anything this is appalling my number is (310) 908-5604 I most definitely would like a refund & a return call I'm Beverly Crowder read more

Dockweiler Beach is okay. I don't usually see too much trash all over the place whenever I have been there... just a lot of seaweed. It's relaxing there actually. You just lay out in the sand, under the sun.. and occasionally watch the planes fly by overhead. There's lots of parking on the street. And there are also a few pits where you can have a bonfire. There's a closer parking lot to the bonfires.. however it's $7 to park there. read more

I came here for my friends' birthdays because they wanted to have a BBQ and bonfire at the beach. Pros: 1) Bonfire pits 2) Cheaper parking at night 3) Plenty of parking on the street (You'll have to walk a bit or risk the steep trek down) 4) Personal BBQ grills allowed 5) Not that crowded. 6) Trash cans by every bonfire pit. Cons: 1) Close to a sewage plant, I stayed away from the water. 2) There's a lot of ash everywhere. Need to do a better job of cleaning 3) Bad for swimming because of its proximity to the sewage plant. Suggestions: If you want to get a pit on a peak weekend, come early. read more

This is the closest beach from the San Fernando Valley where you can have a bonfire without getting kicked out because you made a makeshift fire in a hole you dug in the sand. The only draw is you have to get here early in the morning to swoop up a firepit. There is parking for $12.50 at two of the parking lots. There is also street parking, but it's a pain to take your cooler, blankets, chairs, and whatever else you're hauling in your car down a cliff and back up again at the end of your beach day. Ok, I'm exaggerating... it's not a cliff, but it is a hill that doesn't have a gradual descent. One misstep and you can slip and fall a good 2 stories. So if you don't want broken bones, cough up the $12.50 for parking. It's so convenient and much cheaper than an ER bill. I can't say anything about the water quality because I wasn't able to go to the water. I just wanted to lay out on the beach after 2 hours of driving in traffic from San Diego. read more

Today 11-26-11 Holiday weekend and the riffraff crowd is slowly building on a warm day. All I ask is to clean up after yourself. It is really not that hard to make a pledge to yourself to pickup what you brought. It is a shame as a local that I get to see the aftermath of what people do to our beaches on a daily basis. People bring beer, food, plastic etc etc etc and leave it behind, guess what I am the guy who picks it up the following morning while you are still sleeping. Be advised the closer you get to Imperial Highway the closer you get to GHETTO'ness. I honestly would not walk toward that direction when it is nice out. Parking is free and it one huge gang fight getting ready to breakout. I wish I could remember when people walking up and down the Beach selling nicknack's, body-boards & food started. read more
