Mother's Beach also known as Marina Beach is a family friendly beach in Marina del Rey, not to be confused with the Mother's Beach of Long Beach. Established in the late 1950s it encompasses some fun finds like a rustic beach style Cheesecake Factory, Killer Shrimp Cafe, Killer Shrimp Restaurant, Jamaica Bay Inn, FantaSea Yachts and The Ritz-Carlton Marina Del Rey to name a few local spots. The beach itself has some near blue picnic area with bbq pits, sandy shores, volleyball courts, showers and restrooms. It's a pet free zone with lots of marina meets beach activities including kayaking, windsurfing and splashing around. There's a pathway, playground area and plenty of space, though this is a small mini beach. Waves are very calm during the day being more low tide. 24 hour parking, about $7 for the day. Lifeguards on duty during the day hours. It was pretty active on a Friday, though not overly busy as you'd expect on a Saturday of Sunday. Nicer weather for sure, to beat the heat. Brought my little one to the beach today.... The water is a little dirty but the biggest issue here is to be careful when you do get in the water as it is stingray territory. I stepped on a stingray barb when I was getting out the water and let me tell you it is very painful... you would think they would have signs up about stingrays but they don't. A lot of kids here get in the water with no water shoes on and can easily step on a barb. read more

Yesterday I went there to see the Hawaii Canoe race, and the beach was full of beautiful people, lively, and fun. It is perfect for children. There is cool Cheese cake factory there. I was excited to visit Mothers Beach to go paddle boarding and enjoy my day but tbh the beach was overcrowded and had super Overpriced beach vendors. Would not recommend going to Paddle Method for any water sports. Tim was super rude which made my decision to end up leaving even though I already paid $10.00 for parking I was maybe there for maybe 30 mins enjoyed my lunch then left. read more

This beach is soooo sick for toddlers. The parks are beautiful and enormous. The playgrounds are really fun and spacious.

This is a quaint little beach that is not overly crowded and is surrounded by condos, hotels and restaurants. We were there to kill time before getting on our plane. I could see two beachside locations that had water toy options: kayaks, paddle boards, wake boards, etc. In some areas there is paid parking, we didn't have to pay as we found a lot you didn't have to pay. The main entertainment for the day was a homeless guy arguing with one of the beachside shops about his missing cellphone (gist was that the owner let him charge his phone, but when they closed, he had to come pick it, which he didn't as he fell asleep. The phone was then stolen along with a bluetooth speaker). The homeless guy (on roller skates) argued initially with one guy, then a second worker, then finally a third person, and then all of them. The first worker placated the homeless guy by giving him a phone from their lost and found - but obviously not the original phone. WTH?! Clearly this wasn't going to be a place we'd come back and visit, but while we had a couple hours until heading to the airport, it was a nice filler. It's actually quite a lovely view from the beach and has its share of regulars which makes it a fun place to visit. read more

Nice beach, not too crowded, with kids playground, volleyball nets, kayaks and other sports equipment for rent, public restroom, grills and picnic tables. It has calm waters but I just learned that water here is among the most polluted in California. It's still a good spot for relaxing by the beach. read more

What a spectacular gem!! We are visiting with our 18m toddler and thanks to yelp, found this modestly reviewed park in Marina Del Rey. We arrived and parked by Cheesecake Factory where the permitted parking is. $2 spent and we wandered onto the beach playground. What a pleasant surprise to see multiple playgrounds our little guy could enjoy. The slides are low to the ground and there are gadgets, wheels etc. to play with at each structure. He ended up playing on all of them, but beware the slides as they were pretty warm and it was only 78* out and around 11am. There were many other kids his age (mostly aged 1-4 that I saw) and I didn't see any people who obviously didn't belong in the area which made me feel safe. Plenty of nannies seem to know about this spot and the shaded picnic tables were already claimed when we got here on a Monday morning. I was able to park our stroller under shade near there though and it was easy to keep a watchful eye while at the playgrounds. A bit further along the water are public bathrooms that had soap and tp when I went. There's a place to rinse off (shower) between the bathrooms and playgrounds as well as a drinking water fountain. A section of the water is roped off for families and people going into the water. There are even a couple of food trucks past the bathrooms but we didn't take a close look. We felt like this spot was perfect. Lots for our toddler to do, bathrooms, shade, places to clean up, cheap/safe parking, and it felt clean and safe overall. I highly recommend coming here and would come back in the future :) read more

Cute little beach with lots of activities. As there is a playground and paddleboard/kayak rentals, it definitely feels more like a family beach so not a place for a romantic stroll. But hey, a beach is a beach. This is calm water and nice for a quick after dinner walk. Parking lot and some full service restaurants rim the sand. Wouldn't be first on my list but hey.. if you're in MDR and you've got some kids, this might be a way to kill a couple of hours. My son won a LA Beaches contest and has a trashcan there with his "keep the oceans clean" artwork there. The Beach itself is a perfect place to take very young kids. It is a little inland so there are really no waves, and the water is pretty shallow. However, it is a little small and for older kids it is not the best location since you will not be able to play with waves. I would totally recommend the beach for families with young kids who want to keep their kids safe. read more

I'm not sure if we are lucky or what but it's Saturday, 1140am and there's parking in the lot next to this beach($10 full day), farmer market and play round all in a walking distant. So perfect to relax and kids play in shallow water. Clean and not crowed at all. We rent kayak, paddle board, taxi bus. Lots of things to see and just relax if you have kiddos. read more

Don't get me wrong. There ARE some issues with this beach. In fact, the water in the area is listed as one of the THE most polluted beaches in Southern California. I think it's usually rated a D or F when it comes to water contamination. There are actually signs posted on the lifeguard stations that list a swimmer with a big red circle on it saying to either not swim at all, or if you do swim at your own risk. This is a shame! So I had to dock at least a star for that issue alone and I probably should dock two. So how can I possibly give 4 stars? I NEVER know what I will encounter on my daily walk. I live across the street so this is my go to happy place. It is usually very well maintained by the county. They work hard cleaning it daily and often they rake the sand on a moderately usual schedule. There's everything from nice, covered picnic areas and bathrooms with outdoor showers to a children's playground to kayaks and paddle boards that one can rent daily. Rentals are even going on during COVID. There is ample parking in a couple of lots for a fee and a Saturday Farmers market along with Thursday night food trucks. So 4 stars for the lovely scenery and for the oddities that I undoubtedly will encounter weekly. See pics! read more

Love this beach! Calm waters allow for several outdoor activities. There is a small parking lot that is a bit hard to find and get out of but it's relatively cheap. Several areas to lounge, play beach volleyball and there is a kayak/paddle board company that you can reserve. We rented a kayak and went far out in the channel to see the sea lions! Mother's Beach is a great place to lay out on the sand or paddleboard/kayak. And since there are no waves, it is relatively safe for children. BUT... Please be careful in the water, as it is highly contaminated (nasty), and filled with sting rays and leopard sharks. I had heard of the wildlife before, and thought it might be somewhat uncommon, but, sure enough, I saw it for myself today and had to share. Great beach to paddle board from! There are 30 minute parking spots where you can pull up to the beach and unload your stuff and take it down to the sand. The parking lot is across the street and there's PLENTY of parking with a little automated toll booth where you pay and display your ticket. We got there and aside from a group of people prepping to do a stand up paddle board yoga class and maybe people renting stand up paddle boards, it wasn't crowded. I was setting my board up on the north side of the beach and about 15 people were standing in the water listening to instructions on how to paddle across to start their yoga class. A few minutes later I start paddling around to get my bearings and paddle back to shore to meet my sister. I'm paddling close to the mini rock wall and as I get to shore I notice a ton of small sting rays shuffling around in the sand under my board. I told my sister there are small sting rays here and she said, "Like the ones that killed Steve Irwin?" I tried not to think about that and paddled toward the roped off area for people that wanted to get in the water. I noticed one sting ray there and started paddling around again and heard a guy yelling behind me. I quickly glanced over my shoulder and saw a father pushing his two little kids on a paddle board towards the shore. He wasn't very far in and I could see his shins. He continued to yell and scream and I thought he was being a bit extra and trying to act funny/scare his kids, but it turns out he actually got stung by the sting rays. He then yelled at his wife and kids something to the effect of, why would you bring me here? The life guard was notified and they drove over and I think gave him a bag of ice. It's not really anyone's fault. I did not see any signs saying there were stingrays in the water anywhere. Also, we did paddle out towards the ocean and back and on the way back my sister saw a spotted shark (confirmed it with Google) swimming under her board also right by the shore/rock wall. So, shuffle your feet when you go into the water so the sting rays know you're there and scatter away. As for the shark, it was over by the rock wall away from the sectioned off area for kids/people that want to get into the water and according to Wikipedia/Google the spotted shark is more scared of you than you are of it. Again, there was a stand up paddle board yoga class going on in the same area but just be aware. read more

Love this beach because it's quiet and more chill. We parked across the street in this complex and walked right over. Nice for families as the water is pretty shallow and the waters are calm. Good place to picnic, get a tan, go paddle boating, or just wading in the water. The bathrooms for the beach were quite clean (for a typical super dirty beach bathroom). read more

One of my happy places. A playground and a beach all in one? Yes please. This place used to be crowded, but since covid we've had it to ourselves! There are nice play structures for the kiddos, swings, sand, and views. I love that the water is calmer than the ocean so my kiddo can wade in without getting knocked over by waves. Marina Beach, also known as Mother's Beach that has calm waters that is perfect for swimming, wading, canoeing, paddle boarding and kayaking. If you do not have any aquatic equipment, you can rent one right off the beach. My husband, our little girl dog and I came to this beach last Saturday to launch our kayaks. Parking is $10 all day on Saturdays, in a large parking lot (plenty of parking, so don't worry) and there is also a farmer's market Saturday mornings, through early afternoon (in case you wish to check it out while you are here). I also want to mention that this beach is located in the same parking lot area as Cheesecake Factory. The waters were pretty calm for the most part. But be aware that you share the marina with boats of all different sizes. Please be respectful and try to stay clear of their path (you against a boat.... you won't win). During our time here, we saw 3 sea otters just lying and sun bathing along random strangers' boats. I have never been so up close to one before (other than at an aquarium, but with the glass between us... here there are is no glass. Be aware and don't get too close because sea otters will attack if they feel threatened). At this beach, there is a playground for kids and some picnic tables (as we saw a child's birthday going on when we first arrived). There are also restrooms available at this park. Although porta- potties, these are the nice ones (the large ones that you would rent for a wedding or an event. The ladies had 3 stalls inside) with running water, soap, toilet paper and paper towels. This beach is a nice local beach that is worth visiting if you are in the area or if you are looking for a new spot to take in some aquatic sports. read more

Went here with some friends for a BBQ. I had never been before, and I enjoyed it a lot! It was crowded, but it's more of a smaller beach in the marina, so that's to be expected. I agree that the water may not be the cleanest, but that's also to be expected in a marina beach where there's not a lot of water flow and there are a lot of boats.
