I've come here off & on through the years and I've always had a beautiful experience! Going during the time I was recovering from my surgery, and to heal myself after my diagnosis with Cancer. If your going through any type of medical condition, turmoil or just bored, this is the place to be. I love it more than Santa Monica! And the locals, wow! They are such awesome people! Well mannered, share the strand w/everyone and there's always something or someone that does something that makes it memorable and wanting to come back again & again. I love hiking, but only downfall is when your female and by yourself. Most of my friends are not into it & hubby is busy w/his new job. So that leaves me alone and sad when I can't go hiking. Not anymore! Just plan on getting here early and it's a safe environment to go long distance walking, jogging, biking, rollerblading/skating, etc, sky's the limit!! I love love love walking here from El Segundo or park it in between & do the Pier to Pier stroll. It's beautiful, fresh air, scenic, doesn't matter if it's sunny or overcast, idyllic for all people who are athletic, adventurous, walking doggies & parents walking their little ones and the courteous, well mannered local & visitors that frequent it. Two teeny tiny pet peeves - surprised to see quite a few lazy pet owners, I see pooplies on the floor, pee pee stains throughout (there's gotta be a hose along that Strand somewhere?) & some groups/people still riding bikes through when there's a separate bike trail - small kids & people going through shortly because home is right there is not at all an issue. Also nice is if your driving out here a lil distance, nice spot to have breakfast, lunch, dinner & drinks in the little restaurants, bars, businesses that are on Pier Avenue or surrounding. Beautiful scenery, gorgeous beaches, lovely weather and tons of eye catching entertainment - EVERY visit!

My review will be mainly on the walking path. My absolute favorite spot to go to for a walk. On regular days it's gorgeous and on good weather days it's spiritually uplifting. For those of you who regularly go jogging or running it should be on your running list. You cant go wrong with the beautiful beach on one side with its crashing waves and chill winds and on the other beautiful homes. There are metered parking structures all over. I recommend showing early because they get filled rather quickly. However, there are metered structures all around the area if you're willing to walk a little more. Definitely one of my happy places. It's really the perfect place to be during the summer for people watching and a long ride along the beach. Get the cinnamon roll! I have been here for dinner but brunch is the best ! We sat at a table looking at the water, the brunch cinnamon roll and avocado toast for starters was amazing! We are heading back this weekend for the cinnamon roll alone. The waitstaff was very patient and attentive. Spacing in the restaurant was roomy. I took one star away because the air conditioner unit above our table was leaking water into our foods and drinks. At one point a waiter came with a rag and a swifer broom and began to touch the top of the ceiling RIGHT OVER OYR FOOD AS WE ATE!! So disgusting. We just looked at us and was like oh sorry and then kept going. Safe to say no one else wanted to eat the remainder of there food. We were mostly done so we order dessert to take our minds off . The donuts were better than Sidecar.. Randy's... Dunkin's or any other place I've ever had. Definitely go here for the sweets. read more

Ahhh nothing like running along The Strand and watching the sunset, so beautiful and relaxing. I think that's one of the reasons why I started to tolerate running in the first place. Put me on a beach, and I'm truly a happy camper. And it was a great way to walk off an AYCE Sushi lunch I treated myself to, on the actual day of my birthday. This year I didn't run away to Hawaii's beaches - I just hit one here in sunny Southern California. Surprisingly, there were a lot of people out walking, running, walking their dogs, bicycling, on roller blades etc. But when I was almost in a food coma from lunch, I just did some walking, while enjoying the sun, the cool breeze and the friendly people who were just as happy as I was - as we weren't at work, but at the beach. Waking up and taking a walk or run on "The Strand" is incredible... I could get used to this! We try to escape the AZ heat over the summer and visit family in Manhattan Beach as much as possible... and every time I run on the strand, I remember why I love it here so much! I actually attempted to get Jared to go to a yoga class with me this morning but when he declined, I went for a run instead... I ran from Manhattan Beach down to the Hermosa Beach pier and back - the people watching, perfect breeze, sunshine, and smell of the ocean air is like a natural high for me - I mean it! We've rented bikes and cycled along the strand before too... it's so fun! Now... if we could just find a way to transport the strand to Arizona, I'd be extremely happy - but since I don't see that happening anytime soon, I'll just have to make sure I visit more often! read more

I've lived by the beach for 18 of my 23 years and have always held the belief that Hermosa Beach is cleaner than Redondo and Manhattan beaches, which makes no sense because Hermosa is in between the two. Regardless I stick by my beliefs. The run/walk/bike way is shared by everyone and their dogs. This is in contrast to the Manhattan strand in which the bikers have their own bikeway. Probably doesn't make a difference, but then I don't bike. -1 star for the poop smears on the floor about every 20 feet. It greatly worries me that I might step on poop while I am trying to look cool running. There is free parking until 10am on Hermosa Ave, but if you are trying to park closer before 10am watch the signs. Some are no parking from 7-9am on Mondays, some on Tuesdays, so forth. read more

The Strand is one of my favorite places - there is something about the salty ocean air that makes me very happy. Probably because it brings back so many good memories! My preferred section has always been between the Manhattan Beach Pier and the Redondo Beach Boardwalk. Perfect for rollerblading, it is mostly smooth concrete, and dodging the assorted runners, bikers, erratic small children and dogs only adds to the experience. You can go much farther (the whole thing is 22 miles long) but the path eventually changes to asphalt, which can be kind of scary on 8 little wheels! I never get tired of the view (or the peoplewatching!), and appreciate it more now that I live in a land-locked state with plenty of sand but no beach. read more

Having lived in Manhattan Beach for over 8 years, this makes my list of one of my favorite views of the world. The Strand is fantastic for solo activities, dates or group activities. I have walked, run, & biked the Strand. At one point, I lived at a tiny place a block from the Strand and was okay with having no yard because the Strand was my "yard." Between the gorgeous views of ocean, dolphins, homes, Catalina & Palos Verdes, Piers, there's always something to see. Its the busiest on the 4th of July, when there is a Volleyball tournament & the Fireworks in December; makes for great people watching. Plus, there's food, bathrooms & garbage cans along the Strand. The cities keep the Strand very clean and has "street cleaners" come in once a week to wash it. Favorite activities: Running: Early in the morning, during the week. Nothing better than watching the sun come up and the temperature is still cool. Biking: One of my husband and mine's favorite activities was biking from Redondo Beach to Venice (always meant to take it to Santa Monica, but never did). What's great about this activity is you can stop along each of the cities on your route and have a drink and keep going (Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, etc.) Note: Manhattan Beach has an ordinance against drinking & biking. Seriously. So don't overdo it. Also, Manhattan Beach has a separate bike path & walk path and they always threaten to ticket if you don't use the right path. Walking the dog: my dog loved this route. The only downside is many other people do it and they don't always have trained dogs and they can be aggressive barking and pulling. Also, not everyone is good about picking up after their dogs. Parking is difficult, but you can find more options in Redondo Beach & El Segundo (large lots, where as, Manhattan Beach & Hermosa Beach don't have lots, but metered parking). read more

When I was in college (just a few years ago, wink* wink*), I would come to the Strand on the weekends and wish that I would someday live near this laid-back beach and all it has to offer. Wish granted, here I am just a few years later enjoying the Strand with my kiddies on a regular basis. The best best time is Spring or September/October when there are no tourists and you can actually find a parking spot and it feels like you're the only person at the beach. Good luck in the summer with parking, it's not fun! If they could have valet, I would totally pay to park. In the summer I usually do Manhattan Beach instead, unless I get there early in the morning before the people partying til 2am the night before get up :) There are many things to do on the Strand - volleyball, running, walking, cruising on your bike - and people watching! Dog City USA! If you're a pet lover - Urine for a treat... this is YOUR spot!! However, if you're considering renting or purchasing any of the multi-million dollar homes along the Strand, and pets are not a driving force in your life, be forewarned! You will NOT be waking to the smells of the ocean. Mix in a hot day.. whooo baby!!! This is a tamer more family friendly vision of the Venice/Santa Monica Boardwalk. But a quality of SoCal life continues to be diminished here (IMHO) because of the overpowering, almost paralyzing stench of (pet?) urine that overwhelms the senses from 45th Street to the Manhattan Beach Pier. It's kind of an ugly secret no one really talks about. It is a SUPER dog friendly environment. Water dishes that appear to be placed as hydration spots for pets, homeowners that place jars filled with doggy biscuits... Pet owners here appear to be very responsible - Almost all of the animals I observed were on leashes. (and carried plastic bags to pick up after their pets). There are a lot of very positive things to be said about The Strand... just read any of the other reviews about this place. The neighborhood standard could be substantially elevated if the community could just do something about that permeating stink. read more

This place is so SoCal. It literally is a long strand of boardwalk along the beach. Maybe about 3-4 miles. It's much more organized than the boardwalk in Atlantic City (given, I haven't been in there in 15+ years, so it may have changed). You can rent a bike for about $7-$10 hour and check out the beach and all the beautiful beach front houses. There are people walking dogs, skateboarding, scootering (is that a word?), jogging, etc. I'm not sure if many tourists come here, but it's definitely a great relaxing and chilling place. If you own, borrow or rent a bicycle, you MUST hit up The Strand! I always do Torrance beach up to Manhattan Beach pier and back. One way is 5.5 miles, 11 miles round trip. I've taken Manhattan Beach to Venice but only made it to Marina del Rey since we were running out of time on our parking meters. And recently my friends and I took Venice up to Santa Monica and back (even though it's only 3 miles one way, the trek on The Strand felt like an hour since there were so many people, bikes and cars). At any rate, The Strand automatically gets 5 stars from myself and all of my friends! read more

Hermosa Beach is averagely liked among most people I know because as a bar scene it's not too college (LB 2nd st), pretentious (Santa Monica), douchey (dt Fullerton), or hip (LA art district). The only problem comes on summer weekends when parking is harder to find than finding a unicorn. I've found a resolution to this: park your car at Vons on Pier ave and PCH, make sure you buy something at Vons, and walk down Pier ave to the bars. If you want to go to the beach it'd be better to find parking at residential. I enjoy Hermosa equally for the beach and their bars and that's something no other bar scene or beach both has. There's a boardwalk and volleyball courts if you want to get some exercise in. Plus there are enough bars there for any type of person so if you don't like one bar just find another one until you do. read more

It was a classic case of teenage drinking. Years ago, several hours after sunset, I drove down to the beach, on a cool night, looking for inspiration. The Strand being quiet in the late evening, a gentle wind and salty air make a pleasant combination for a peaceful walk. Up ahead I could see a group milling about on the other side of the concrete wall, young people laughing quietly, easygoing and comfortable with their common acquaintance. The girls were acting coy, the boys macho. Their clothing struck me as a little bit unusual, a strange kind of statement in Anti-Fashion. Without exception, the girls wore their hair in a style that had not seen a comb or brush for a Month. Every store-bought color was represented, each one having A tinge of brightness that shone of their membership status. Even the blue-black bottle jobs carried a glare to compete with the streetlights. The boys, every one of them, had on a pair of Levi's button-fly jeans, and a hairstyle cropped so short, their scalps were exposed to the elements. All of them holding an Open Container. Aren't they worried the police will cruise by? These are Million Dollar Homes on the Strand, these homeowners are the exact people who need to be protected from these beer swilling louts. I eased back into the shadows, watching carefully to identify which were the leaders. That's when I noticed: the two genders aren't mixing equally. They would segregate themselves into small groups of three or four, exchange pleasantries for a few minutes, then an invisible force would stir up the entire flock at the same time, whereupon they would all settle, like birds, into brand new clusters, to regurgitate to each other the same clichés they had just heard moments before. With careful focus, I was able to capture snippets of conversation. " I'll beat his ass if he takes my cigarettes" " When I start working at my Dad's company" "The light changed to green, so I went" "I've told him to stop calling me" "It's like they charge four bucks to get in" While I was taking notes in the background, I noticed something unusual. When each person was finished with their beer, they would walk over, without fanfare, and carefully place the empty back in the case upside-down before grabbing a new one. What kind of witchcraft is this? I wondered to myself. Are they some kind of new age recyclers conducting a ceremony to mother Gaia? The CARDBOARD! The bottom of the box must be sopping wet by now when I think of all the bottles, nominally empty, but each one still having an average of one or even TWO teaspoons of stale beer soaking into the integrity of the corrugated structure. But what could I do? As an individual I mean. Expose my hiding place to shout a warning not to carry the box by its corners? I decided to let the hand of fate take it's toll. Youth will always experience wisdom being forced upon it. That's when I heard it. Spoken casually, with an attitude of encroaching boredom, two words: Black Flag. These kids were Punk Rockers. Now I knew. That was the whole thing. Why DON'T the police patrol the Strand more often? The nearest one was barely thirty feet away. I could not decide what action I should take, or which way I should turn. Should I burst out suddenly from behind the patio bush, and sprint for the nearest busy intersection? That was over a hundred yards away, and this group would have leapt upon me with a sudden destruction, screeching their antipathy to the status quo. But really, what options did I have? There were no cell phones back then, and my gun was in the car. I chose the only course with the best chance of survival. I squeezed down into the corner of the patio, hunched myself deeper into my jacket, and waited for them to finish their beer. They would HAVE to leave then. This happened right here in Hermosa Beach. Before I moved to the west coast I spent a lot of time on the strand, rollerblading from it's beginning down in Redondo to it's end where Santa Monica turns into the Palisades. It was a several hour blade up there and back, and there were a few detours off the path that you had to make along the way. Even so, it was a great way for an urban city dweller to get some sun, fresh ocean air, and exercise all at the same time. In the midst of a NY winter, it was a heavenly way to spend my weekends. Each time I would return to NYC, my face would be glowing and my batteries would be recharged. I actually was a healthy looking Manhattanite. However, when I moved out west and lived right on the strand, I lost fascination with it quickly. Soon, I began to notice all the little annoying things that you only notice about a place once you live there. Weekends were packed with people, making it difficult to enjoy...and then there was an initiation to my first summer season with tourists everywhere...and the frat boys and sorority girls moving in for their summer rentals. Joy. I was only 29 but all the drunk people on weekends walking back and forth along the strand, talking VERY loudly with each other or on their cell phones, became quickly annoying. Many of the drunks were searching for where they parked their cars. How do I know this? They were usually yelling something like this into their cell phones, "HOW CAN I DRIVE HOOOOME WHEN I CAN'T FIND MY CAAAAAR!" Isn't that special. Ah, it warms my heart to think of all the many people I glimpsed from my window upstairs, staggering around from vehicle to vehicle, hoping their keys would open one of the car's doors. Keyless entry wasn't as common then, but DUIs sure were. I enjoyed the weekdays as much as I possibly could, but even then I had to summon the beach police on a few occasions. Once a speed cyclist...with his huge calves, racing jersey, and cycling helmet with the tiny rear-view thingy protruding out, like someone had gouged it with a dentist's mirror...had caused a collision when he tried to pass a rollerblading mommy with her baby in the baby jogger. His front tire clipped her left Rollerblade when he tried to pass her from behind. In his cycling frenzy, Mommy (and the cyclist) was seriously injured and bleeding, but thankfully baby remained in the jogger because mommy had the good sense to let go of it when she was being hijacked from behind. Off in the ambulance mommy and baby went, sans $250 baby jogger, which was left at the scene of the accident.. In fact, I saw a number of cyclists cause considerable injury to others who were also enjoying the strand. Sometimes it was the cyclists fault, sometimes the pedestrian. On one occasion, a child darted across the path, as children will do when they are at the beach...and no cars are around and it is supposed to be "safe". The cyclist, trying to avoid the boy, hit the brakes and went into the sand. The sudden stop of the bicycle in the sand launched his body like a bronco bull launches an unwanted cowboy off its back. He was injured and bleeding, and screaming curse words at the little boy. I actually think he might have physically slapped the child had the boy not run away. There is no denying the natural beauty one encounters along the strand...the views are lovely...and when adults play nice with one another, it can be a great place to get some exercise. Yet, I wouldn't recommend living right on it. Nosey people are always looking into your house, parking in your attached garage on the weekends if you leave your door up when you run to Trader Joe's briefly, and borrowing your deck chairs for their own personal use at the beach. People seem to mistake your home as theirs...why? I can't say. And its noisy at night when the drunks are staggering home yelling on their cell phones, and I lived right on the border of Manhattan Beach where there were no bars or restaurants close by. I can only imagine what living on the other end of Hermosa is like, near the pier. Even so, I have the fondest memories of sitting on my terrace in the winter, enjoying my morning tea in nothing more than sunscreen and a Brazilian cut bikini, watching the dolphins jump and play out in the ocean. That, alone, was worth all the other annoyances that I endured. But watch out for manic cyclists in their loudly colored jerseys and tight @ss shorts...behind their sunglasses are glazed eyes, fantasizing that they're in the last stretch of the Tour de France, and nothing stands in their way...but you! read more

Finally, my 300th review! And I cannot think of a better place to write about than The Strand in Hb. This is my favorite place in the whole entire world. Seriously, I can't tell you how excited I was when I first moved out here and found out that this would be my backyard for the next few years. I remember running out of the car before actually moving into the apartment and playing along the strand and childishly climbing the swings out on the sand, so proud to soon be a local. It was love at first sight. I still haven't found a place quite like it with such minimal separation between the waves and its neighboring civilization. The beach itself is the perfect size - big enough to escape away from the daily grind and intimate enough to pretend that it's your own private beach, most days of the year. This place is the reason I would pay an arm and a leg to live in a tiny studio apartment within walking distance. One day, my goal is to own a piece of real estate right along The Strand. This is probably one of the cleanest boardwalks/strand areas in LA county. It's cleaner than Redondo's strand area though it is a bit more lively crowd than Redondo. It's a safe area as it's well patrolled by HBPD and volunteers. I enjoy taking my dog for long walks and cleaning the city up while we walk; however, the strand was incredibly clean yesterday given the huge crowds there for the last summer concert series event of the season. While some of the side streets needed picking up, the strand was fairly spotless given the crowds. The views and sunsets with the pier in the background are fantastic. This is definitely one of the longest piers in the area as well and is much cleaner than Redondo's or Santa Monica's. read more

It's smooth and wide. I have put many a foot and tire print on the Strand in the short amount of time I have actually lived here. I plan to put quite a bit more foot prints and tire prints out there. There are tons of cool things to look at while you are on the Strand. Houses, people, ocean, beach, or the stars. It's all out there to enjoy, and anyone is allowed to go there for free. The reason I moved here? To be able to walk out of my door and in less than five minutes be rollerblading down the strand (yes, that's me in the evenings -- get out the way!!!). By the way, until you have pre-partied at someone's house/apartment/bungalow in El Porto/Manhattan/Hermosa/Redondo and proceeded to bike tipsy down The Strand at night en route to the bars by one of the piers -- with breathtaking beach houses on one side of you and the moon shining over the dark expanse of the Pacific Ocean on the other side -- getting yelled at by rich old people, not caring, spilling from your red cup, laughing, and getting sand in your going out clothes: you have not lived, you have not loved, you have not thrived, you have not enjoyed what it means to be a twenty- or thirty-something living in Southern California. There tend to be a lot of people there because unlike Redondo and Manhattan- the strand is the bike lane and walking lane all in one. The Strand is really the place for anyone who wants to explore the beach, exercise, check out some gorgeous houses, people watch, or just get out in the sun. You'll see people from all walks of life around The Strand, from Midwestern tourists to beach volleyball buffs. People of all ages come out on sunny summer days and just about every weekend to enjoy the beach. I personally love leisurely walks and bike rides or to roller skate on the strand. It might be a little crowded and touristy for a serious runner since you'd have to dodge in and out of foot traffic unless you go early morning. Parking is tight and the meters run until pretty late at night so if you can get there early and walk a few blocks to the beach, you'll be glad you did. South bay without the strand is like supply without demand, a beach without the sand, or a country with no land. I run and ride the beach paths a lot, and while Venice is the most fun, the strand is the most peaceful by far. Yes I've been here on a Saturday afternoon, and I stand by my opinion. Try fighting cars, blind turns, rental trikes, narrow paths, airplane noise, gangs, or pitch black nights, then come back and tell me it's so bad. It's also the most happening place in the south bay, for those who don't like fighting L.A. traffic. read more

I'm not sure why this place popped in my head today, but it did. And, for the great memory of my beautiful morning walk, one day long, long ago I decided to write a review. I am one of those people that loves the beach but hates the sand. But, the strand allows you to walk along the beach and be near it while not getting your feet dirty! To one side of you is a beautiful nature view of the Pacific and to the other you can view stunning, multi-million dollar beach houses. This is a place to lose yourself, get lost in your thoughts, and dream big! I suppose you can exercise here too, but I'll just go for a walk, thank you very much. read more

I love "The Strand." I mean, I love it!!! It's such a great place to come and walk. I like to park right between the Hermosa Beach side and the Manhattan Beach side. It gives me the option to figure out which side to walk on any given day. I usually find a parking spot with no problem there (the parking meters cost $1.00 for an hour). Plus, it gives me instant access to the beach. There are so many people out and about walking, jogging, bike riding, skateboarding, roller blading, or just sitting on their porches watching all of us going by. A lot of people are out walking their dogs too. I like to walk here just before sunset. The weather is a bit cooler, the crowds are smaller, and it's great to clear your head. Definitely a recommended place to come after a visit to the Comedy and Magic Club or a romantic dinner. read more

I've found myself in the LA area every other weekend these days. I'm still training for a marathon in June. The Strand is a great place to keep up with my long weekend runs. There's no stoplights and great scenery from nice homes and the ocean. On the path you'll find various people walking, running, or biking. Beautiful place to just enjoy the great weather and scenery even if you're not a runner. read more
