We have been working with Doctor Flue for 35 years now. They installed our original unit and have serviced it on a regular basis since. They were a much smaller operation then. They were kind, helpful, trustworthy, efficient, knowledgeable, and reasonably priced from the beginning. Contacted them for a chimney repair; and they said they would charge me $198 for an ESTIMATE, and they couldn't come over until July. They sent me an email that said "If price is the only concerning aspect of this project for you, we are likely not the company to go with as we do not offer competitive prices, If you are not looking for proper educated repairs but rather the cheapest, we wish you the best." Seems very condescending me; I have never heard of a company charging for an estimate. Of course price is not my only factor in choosing a contractor; but treating a potential customer like an idiot is a dealbreaker. read more

My initial involvement with Doctor Flue was positive - they responded to my request for a quote in a reasonable time frame, sent a professional team and wrote up a very clear quote, complete with an analysis and pictures. As a result, we scheduled them to complete some work - we were told a tentative date and that we were on the list to get our work done sooner, so they would confirm. They never actually contacted us again. In the meantime, due to issues outside our control, we ended up having to cancel the work. And this is where things went south very quickly. Both my husband and I contacted Doctor Flue (over phone and email) to try to get information about the cancellation policy and to understand the fees. I received incredibly unhelpful and rude emails and my husband was told they "didn't have time to deal with us" and was hung up on. My requests to speak to someone in management was denied, but we were quick to get a bill in the mail for the 33% cancellation fee the next day. For total clarity, this negative review is not about the cancellation fee. I understand that I foolishly signed a contract and have to live with the result. What this review is about is the way that my husband and I were treated once we cancelled. I shudder to think what it might have been like dealing with them if the work was completed and something went wrong. I hired Dr. flue to come out and clean my chimney, instead, they did a so called required evaluation that they said that they had to charge. Because they do not come out and do anything for free. I would seriously watch the way this company conducts there business. The guys that came out were two very nice, Well educated guys and really seemed to know what they were doing for the evaluation. Little did I know, they were setting me up for an estimate to repair my chimney, and not cleaning my chimney at all. When I called (7days later) to figure out what was going on because the initial receipt was not even sent out to me that they said it would be, the guy at the office was a complete jerk! I tried to explain my situation, and all he could do was talk over me and keep telling me to listen to him! I would be very wary of how this company conducts business. We use our fireplace regularly in the winter but it hadnt been cleaned for decades to my knowledge. Dr.Flue's technicians were professional, methodical, and courteous. They took photos of the entire process using the camera and sweep, and sent me a detailed report of everything they did. They looked up the manual of my decades old add-on fireplace and determined that the glass doors that had been installed against the advice of the manual were interfering with the ventilation system. I had them remove the doors which they hauled away for me, and they recommended a product that works to remove the old soot stains left behind. They take photos of all the relevant parts, clearly explain issues, if any, and give options. This year they said I didn't need a sweep because the chimney had few deposits. They put booties on their shoes as soon as they come in to keep the floor clean. They arrive at the scheduled time. I always have them out in late spring as soon as the heating season is over. These guys were great every step of the way. From the time I called and left a message and got a quick return call to scheduling to the actual visit everything was smooth. Do not do business with these people. I called Dr. Flue to inspect my fireplaces, and show us how to use them properly. For the inspection they popped the chimney caps off to look down the chimney. I thought nothing of it as they are the experts. The next day it began raining, I could hear water running down the inside of the walls. Water was pouring out of a light switch in my newly painted bathroom. Interestingly this is exactly where my chimney is located. Water also soaked the walls and ran all the way to the basement where it saturated the ceiling of my newly painted basement garage. I will have to have them repaired. Now, I call Dr. Flue, I get in touch with the GM I think (I believe Doc's son) and the guy is the biggest jerk I have ever dealt with in all of my experiences. He immediately told me I was accusing him of something that was very serious and not his fault. I was very calm told him I was not accusing him of anything. I needed some help because my roof is leaking badly. I told him I was trying to resolve the situation so we could continue to do business. (We had ordered a 6,000 insert fireplace for the master), he tells me "I can tell you right now I don't want your business." I was shocked. I told him the inspectors popped something off on the chimney. He tells me to use specific industry terms or he won't understand me. I am not a chimney expert. I began to explain he interrupts me again and says "sir I am using precise terms and I expect you to do the same." So, I began again the guy actually tells me to be quiet and listen! He tells me it could not be their fault, I must have a bad roof. This is ridiculous. It has rained many times and no problems until these people showed up. The conversation ended with him telling me the next time I call I better put my "lawyer wife" on the phone because we are going to need one to get them to do anything. Outrageous!! Finally after several emails we get in touch with the owner. He sends a crew out and they put some kind of sealant around the chimney caps. The leaked stopped. And no problems. I have never heard from them since. They have not called to check if the leaking stopped, or if there is anything else they could do. They have not offered to fix the damage caused by their gross negligence. I would strongly recommend taking my advice and stay away from these people. They do not back up their work and do not care about the customer. Additionally, I am not sure the information they gave me about the condition of my chimneys is accurate. read more

Cancelled twice on me and didn't have any concern or attempt to make things right. They won't give you an app time until a day ahead, so you have to block your whole weekday to be home, then when they cancel it's your problem. Use someone else, these guys don't care about the customer. read more

I had Doctor Flue remove an old non-functioning gas fireplace insert from my 1890s home and install a brand new Valor Horizon radiant gas fireplace insert. I am thoroughly pleased with the level of service I have received from this company. The owner Kevon went above and beyond in most every way. He explained everything thoroughly since this is my first time operating a unit and, a few weeks after installation, he came out to make an adjustment when we needed it, at no charge. They stand behind their work. The initial team that came out to remove the old unit was also super-professional, so I think the customer service quality is there whether or not you are dealing with the owner. The fireplace has really added to my enjoyment of my home and I am glad that I used Doctor Flue, which is not a chain, but a local, family-owned company. If I could could a negative rating I would. They came out to clean my chimney but took apart my wood stove and couldn't put it back together again. They said the parts were bad. We contracted with them to do the now needed additional repairs. Five months later they had no record of my order and wanted to charge me again to come out and do another quote. They totally refused to order the parts and do the work already decided without charging me for another quote. They lost the paperwork but did have my payment. My father had this company come to inspect our chimney to get it properly working and cleaned out. The workers were extremely condescending and not helpful in the slightest. Seemed like they didn't know what was going on and made me us feel dumb whenever we asked a simple question. Then they tried charging us for an "estimate" which was beyond ridiculous. Worst customer service I've ever had in my life. I would never invite these people back into my home. Wish I could give them a negative score but they lowest I can go is 1 star unfortunately. A place that installs woodstoves should know that you do not normally heat the attic with the intention of melting snow on the roof. The attic was well insulated to keep heat in the house and the house was cold because they left a giant hole in my ceiling. Someone who installs wood stoves through ceilings should also know what a drop ceiling looks like... I have attached photos of water leaking from their chimney installation and the messed up way they left the drop ceiling after it had been hanging unsupported forever when they waited for parts. (Sorry about the cobwebs...) Also, they didn't need to go on the roof to close up the hole in the ceiling inside but they did refuse to come out until they could do all of the work at the same time because it was not "cost-effective" for them. If I find the photo of the hole they left I will post that too but it's been so long I don't know where it is right now... P.S. That 5 star review following this one was posted by "Kevon B." who is the owner there or his son, I can't remember which, I think they had the same name. The photos I uploaded of their shoddy work have been replaced by Dr. Flue with the comment cards you see here, they deleted the 5 star review the owner wrote but there are two new 5 star review by people with only 1 review on Yelp. I have been a repeat customer for this company and I had an appointment which was cancelled by the company for a good reason BUT instead of fitting me in for another appointment and trying to rearrange another customer, which they said "Oh, we cannot upset another client" they put me off for 2 weeks!! Offered me the day before Thanksgiving which I explained was not available to me and why should I have to wait for 2 weeks?? I called several other companies who were appalled at the lack of DR. Doctor Flue converted our natural fireplace to a gas log. They had to run a gas line and get the permit. The work was expertly done in less than four hours. The wait was exactly what was promised - two to three weeks. All communications with them by telephone and email were friendly and professional. Excellent clean-up. The wait time to get an appointment was pretty painful - it took 2 months to get someone out. Then again, I booked in the late fall. Once they actually got to my house, I was incredibly impressed. Do not hire this company. They supposedly fixed my fireplace but when I went to turn it on it would not come on. They would not come back out to check their work and claimed it needed a new valve based on what the original tech mentioned on his paperwork without even seeing it. Charged me $450 and wanted to charge me a lot more for a new valve. I hired another company who installed a remote and fixed the issue at a fraction of the cost. New company said very rarely does the fireplace need a new valve. Doctor Flue also claimed my chimney needed a new cap for $1400 and I had to sign a contract then wait 2 months for them to come back. When I tried to cancel the contract they charged me $450 for canceling. However, they canceled on me twice. Don't sign anything in advance. I asked them what they could do for the $450 since I was stuck paying it. They said they could put a sealer on it that was guaranteed for 10 years. So why didn't they recommend this in the first place as an option? Beware of price gouging and charging for needless repairs. Get a second opinion. I also wanted to mention that their crew was very unprofessional when I approached their truck upon arrival. Don't care to mention what I saw. read more
