Cute little BBQ spot. We stopped on a road trip. I had the pulled pork sandwich. It came already…read moresauced which made it hard to taste the pork so I was a little disappointed in that. Also came with the slaw on the top - good. The pork was tender and well-trimed, but I didn't catch much smoke. We had a side of fries, they were nice and fat, but not super warm. We had a side of green beans. They were a little overcooked but had a nice flavor, with a slight bit of a pickled flavor. Good value for the price.

This place has been holding it down since 1963, and they've got the plaque to prove it, proudly posted as a member of the Alabama Barbeque Hall of Fame. When you walk in, it feels like you just stepped into a time capsule where calories do not count and everybody knows how to properly pronounce "slaw." The ambience absolutely screams old school BBQ joint. Wood paneling. No nonsense tables. The kind of place where you half expect your uncle to be in the corner arguing about college football. Now let's talk food, because that is why we're here. The pulled chicken? Outstanding. Tender, juicy, packed with flavor. It showed up ready to win. If it ran for office, I would vote for it. That chicken understood the assignment. The BBQ chicken had that beautiful crisped skin that makes you lean in like, "Oh yeah, this is about to be serious." But then it hit the plate a little under seasoned. The sauce was on the thinner side too. Not bad, just more "light drizzle at a picnic" than "bold backyard pitmaster energy." And let me take a moment to publicly thank the potato salad. Special shout out. Creamy, balanced, and clearly made by somebody's grandmother who does not measure anything and does not need to. All in all, Johnny's is a solid four stars. Historic, nostalgic, and when they hit, they really hit. I'll be back, mostly for that pulled chicken and potato salad combo that had me considering a second plate and a nap.

I have been eating Big Bob's BBQ my whole life. The quality and taste of the pork shoulder, smoked chicken, and Brunswick stew I recently purchased was very very disappointing. We ordered 2 pounds of pork shoulder. The meat had no taste. I couldn't detect hickory smoke. The pork was burnt and very fatty. The accompanying vinegar based sauce was not seasoned like previous times. Basically it was vinegar with little seasoning. 1/5 The smoked chicken, my favorite, was dry. I wondered if it was leftover from the previous day. The seasoning wasn't very good. 2/5 The Brunswick stew was not good. The recipe has changed. It tasted sweet which was off putting. I do not remember Brunswick stew tasting sweet. The quart of stew had 10 tiny pieces of potato and a few corn kernels. I saw some pork meat floating in a strange red colored broth. I remember when stewed tomatoes were in the stew. Not anymore. The soupy stew did not taste very good. 2/5 The potato with pulled pork was ok. The sauce given was a thin vinegar base that had little seasoning. The potato was the best thing I ate from Big Bob's. 3/5 I am thoroughly disappointed with the quality and taste of Big Bob's pulled pork, smoked chicken and Brunswick stew. I will return again. It will be a while though. I can't get this visit out of my head. This feels like a bad Twilight Zone episode. I really have enjoyed the foods from here in the past. Sadly, not this time. 2/5

The building is a little small, but there is an extra dining room upstairs so it makes up for it. The dining room is very clean and you can tell they definitely pay attention to details. From the moment we walked in the staff had nothing but smiles and greetings for us! They were all so friendly and our server was polite, knowledgeable, and very helpful recommending different food to us. The prices are reasonable and the portions are very good. I had the catfish as it's one of my favorites and theirs did not disappoint me! Beautifully fried catfish just right! Very flavorful! The baked potato was hot and fresh, but the star for me was the Cole slaw and those fantastic hush puppies! I could've just had the slaw and hush puppies and all would've been perfect! They were delicious! My wife had the pulled pork and bbq beans and she said it was very good! We enjoyed our food, and the experience immensely! My only real advice to give you is, get there early! It fills up fast, and now I know why! We will be back this weekend! Keep up the good work!

I walked in on a Sunday afternoon (October 1, 2023) maybe 4:15 or 4:30 and it was not too busy, but not necessarily dead either. The staff there was incredibly friendly and I chose a table. I really liked the log cabin atmosphere and my server was great. Since I am trying to drop a few pounds, I went with the grilled catfish and for my sides, I went with coleslaw and green beans. It was very good and made the diet a bit easier to do when you can eat tasty food. I would definitely return here and look forward to returning after the diet brings me down those ten pounds. I would definitely recommend it and I will give it five stars overall.
