I came here to grab lunch for myself and the family. Not a fan. The wait was more than 45 minutes! Not only was the wait ridiculous...but when I asked why EVERYONE who'd come in had gotten their food but I was still waiting, I was told they had given my food to someone else. The waiter ran out to the car to get my food...from the people who were driving off with it. They wanted me to just take the food that someone else taken out of the restaurant! Geeze. My review is way overdue. I discovered this place over a year ago. I love creole and cajun food and this place does it well. The owner is from Louisiana and moved to Texas after Katrina. A regular customer that visits at least once a week told me the story so I'll just stop there. On my first visit, I ordered a fried shrimp dinner with fries and a order of boudin balls. My husband ordered a fish and shrimp dinner. Most places have store bought sides but not Doe Belly's. The sides are made from scratch and they are delicious. The fried shrimp is seasoned perfect and not greasy. The fries are good too but after trying their potato salad, greens, cabbage, red beans and rice I no longer get the fries. The basket comes with fries or you can get a dinner with two sides. Gumbo is also on the menu and it's very good. Now for the best part of my meal, I'm from Houston and it's hard finding great boudin and Doe Belly's has great boudin balls. I was hesitant to try it because they add liver but after speaking with the cook, she assured me that I won't be able to taste the liver and she's right. There boudin balls are not always available so call ahead before making a special trip. They are open for dine in and they sell alcohol. I have only tried their non alcoholic punch and it's good but a little too sweet. This place is packed on the weekends so unless you plan on dining in, call ahead to place your order. The owner is so down to earth and all of the employees are friendly and hard at work. Forney is worth the drive for great creole cooking. read more

I googled and found Doe Belly's I am from Louisiana a transplant to Texas for over 20 years now. I was excited to learn the owners are also from Louisiana. The restaurant is located on a small road and I missed it. You park under a Sonic style parking area. As you enter, you have the menu on the wall and place your order. The building is divided into 2 areas with a bar set up. The bathrooms are located behind the bar. The boys had chicken tenders, wife had sausage and shrimp creole and I had shrimp etouff with fish basket. For the number of customers, the food took time to pick up where we ordered. The catfish was warm along with fries. The soups were taste yet notch stuff (sausage, shrimp) and tenders were ok for a kids meal. Cannot lie this place is pretty good. Have the cat fish two strips and four shrimp with fries. Hush puppies had good texture great flavor. This place has really good food, especially the sides. This time I got the grilled tilapia with collards and red beans. I am a red bean snob, and these were seasoned well with a hint of heat and a thick gravy. Collards just needed a tiny bit of salt but were obviously fresh. The tilapia had a great Cajun seasoning and was flaky and light. My only criticism was that it took about 25 minutes for my order. I've been a fan of Doe Belly's since my first visit, which was years ago. It's in, what used to be, a Sonic Drive-In and the decor is Cajun themed with music filling the restaurant. Always get the same order...10 piece Catfish meal with fries, green beans, hush puppies and a small side collard greens, if available (for my 85 year old mom, who loves the greens). They do get busy and it can be hit or miss if you can get through by phone, to place an order for take out. I think they stop taking phone in orders at the rush times. Their food is all well seasoned and the fish does have a spicy kick, which I personally love. I live in Mesquite, so I have to travel to Forney. It's worth the trip for good catfish! read more

I THINK THEY HAVE STARTED USING SWAI- NOT REAL CATFISH ANYMORE. I have eaten at this place since they opened long ago, and I can say the last 2-3 years, the taste has changed. I have been 3 times in the several months, driving over after work to get a family pack, and have been highly disappointed. I hadn't been in over a year since I moved, and the first visit in October was lackluster. I went during a break at work and expected the same flavorful, slight spicy/cajuny catfish. It was pretty much just cornmeal on the breading. I chalked it up to there being tons of people. Went back in December to get a family pack after lunch, and was surprised that the fish was the same- unflavorful and rubbery. This is what makes me think it's not real catfish anymore. I am saddened that the quality of the fish has gone down and about the lack of flavor of my last 3 meals from there. I gave them a try hoping it was just me, but, it's definitely them. The batter is not as good (tastes like it's just cornmeal), the fish is a weird texture making me think it's that swai, and the rest of it was just plain greasy. There was a cook- a dark skinned black guy with a beard- who worked in there years ago who I haven't seen in a while. The food hadn't really been good since then. The tall white lady was a hit or miss after the black dude left (I was told he went to the Kaufman location but I never saw him there). I think the person who was there cooking the last 3 times was one of the sons of the owners. I remember them as kids a long time ago in there helping. I've only had their catfish, but I found it excellent. The fish was tender and moist, but not mushy. The breading was crunchy, with a great mix of savory seasoning and packed a little heat! I switched out fries and substituted coleslaw, which was creamy, a little sweet and a little salty, and a great crunch! My order also came with two hush puppies which did not disappoint, either. I have been there twice, once for lunch, and once for dinner, and the meal was of the same quality on each visit. On my lunch visit, there were only a few customers.
