For over 40 years the Dog Bar & Grill has been serving up food, drinks and in the summer live music & dancing. And yes dogs (leashed) are allowed on the patio. At an elevation of 8650 this no frills rustic mountain restaurant is located in Cuchara Village. Inside, license plates decorate the walls and there are tables & chairs for seating. Note, parking is limited. Service was great... very friendly. We arrived for lunch on a weekday during the holiday season & there was no wait. I had the Alpine Burger & substituted a side salad for fries. Burgers are 1/2 pound grass fed beef patties. My burger came with melted Swiss cheese, grilled mushrooms, onions, lettuce, tomato & pickles. Not only was my burger big, it was cooked perfectly & delicious. The grilled mushrooms & melted cheese were yummy too. The side salad was plain but good, it also was a big portion, however it was served on a too small of a plate, making it difficult to mix the salad dressing in. Stopped in because we actually found a place to park. Nice shady tables outside on the deck. All the servers were very nice and ours was great. We really only wanted a margarita but decided to try the BBQ Nachos. Just say yes please. They should rename them to be Dog Bar Poutine. It starts with crispy fries. Then add queso. Then pile on some slaw. Then pork burnt ends and top with BBQ sauce. You eat it with a fork. So delish. They also had really good looking pizzas, burgers and other stuff. Beers on tap. The margaritas were also good. Get the cucumber jalapeño margarita. It has cucumber tequila from 21 Seeds, a women owned distillery in Mexico. read more

We happened to be in town when they opened. They were just getting set up for the day, but service was great. We had burgers & salads. All were excellent. The only mark against them was the plate they service the salad on. One wrong move and you are eating on the table. Get a good sized bowl! Fun looking place. This is the perfect mountain restaurant! It was our first time in Cuchara, and knew the Dog Bar was the place to be. After reading reviews I was prepared to wait and seeing that it was busy on a Saturday afternoon I figured that would be the case. We sat on the patio as the storm rolled in and was told by the waitress the bar was backed up and our drinks would take some time. We also ordered fried mushrooms for apps and put in our food order as we figured there would be a wait. Much to our surprise our drinks came out much quicker then expected and the mushrooms came out shortly after that! The mushrooms were exactly as advertised in these reviews - very hot, fresh and tasty! The only rookie mistake was I forgot to ask for the jalapeño ranch. As we continued to watch the storm roll in, our food came out, again not even 5-10 min later. I had a buffalo chicken salad which is my all time fave. The salad was fresh and the sauce was tangy. Maybe only minor complaint was the portion wasn't huge like salads normally are, but that's OK! My husband had the fish and chips who also had no complaints. Overall the food, atmosphere and service was great and we beat the rain! Perfect little mountain restaurant for a day trip. I'd also love to check out the Local Lodge across the street for overnight stays, as it really looks like they've improved and developed this local area. Pro tip -make sure you check out the gift shop, it had the cutest modern touristy items without being cheap and gimmicky! Loved everything in there. Oh my goodness, we had the best hamburger at the Dog Bar. The fish and chips, French Dip and the green chili sauce were delicious. Sitting outside on the deck and the views are so beautiful. Savannah was such a wonderful waitress and all of the employees were so wonderful and all were willing to do what it takes to make our meal a great experience. This is a must stop when you are in Cuchara on Highway 12. read more

My friend and I chose this for lunch on our trip The the nearby area. Definitely worth it! We sat down immediately and a server dropped off menus. Another server came back to grab our drink menus a few minutes later. My ultimate lunch decision : chicken, bacon, avocado, and cheese sandwich. It was grilled and delicious! Plus, the homemade onion rings were crispy too. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was for the wait time on our food. We waited close to twenty five minutes for our food. There were two other tables : both with 4 people at each table. I know they are in their slow season so maybe they don't have that many employees for weekday lunch rush. I don't normally leave reviews,but on July 22 at 1:15 pm, my wife and I walked in, sat in covered patio area, waited 45 minutes with no acknowledgement. I walked inside after 25 minutes to request a menu... waitress checked on tables on both sides of us multiple times, walking right past us. I walked the entire restaurant, and everyone else had at least been served water and had menus. I've been coming here for twenty years.... I get it, they're busy, short handed, but inexcusable to not even acknowledge your customers. Never again. Extremely poor service!! I'm going to mail them back my Dog Bar t-shirt and cap! read more

We had a great experience at Dog Bar & Grill during our first visit. The deep fried pickles and mushrooms are spot on. I could've eaten the entire tray of the mushrooms - they're fried to perfection! Whatever you get, make sure to ask for a side of their jalapeño ranch dressing. We also ordered the Hangover Burger and bowl of green chili and both were good. If you're driving through southeast Colorado or visiting Cuchara, make sure to pop in. And don't leave without trying the Famous Dog Bar Mud Pie - the perfect mix of ice cream pie loaded with coffee ice cream, almonds, & a chocolate cookie crust. This is a yearly stop we make in Cuchara and we were SO DISAPPOINTED. When we walked in, one of the servers told us they were understaffed but we could wait and they would get to us as soon as possible, so we did. Waitstaff was helping regular customers rather than helping other customers so our experience was the worst we've had in almost 10 yrs. We barely got drinks and appetizers, and when we asked for the check the server said she forgot we were there.... We had three ketchup packets for the tray of onion rings (the waitress said she would bring us a bunch more and they never showed up) but we made the most of it and ate as many onion rings as we could since they tasted great. I'm not sure we'll be back.... We were prepared to wait, but not to be ignored.... Very sad. read more

This restaurant has really good service but their food is horrible 12 out of 12 of the people in my party did not like their food. I get sick when I have too much marinara sauce so I always ask for light. (All restaurants except for this one are always very accommodating to this very easy to do request) because When my pizza came out If anything it was the opposite I asked for they added so much marinara sauce it was ridiculous. I don't like sending my food back so I ordered a new one and asked for very light marinara sauce and this one had more than the last. This would have been 1 star on not for the service read more

Quiet day in Cuchara today and just after lunch, it was very quiet. Service was top notch. We ordered the signature club sandwich and dog Cobb salad. The club was very disappointing considering the chicken breast was as thick as the Chile pepper. The salad did not have much more chicken in it either. Very disheartening. read more

My husband and I stopped at the Dog Bar & Grill while taking the scenic Byway drive - recommendation from a friend. We sat on the outdoor patio and loved the atmosphere and friendliness of both the staff and the patrons. We shared a burger and onion rings and they were both yummy. Interestingly we met a couple and visited with their 3 poodles, to learn they live less than 10 miles from us in TX. Small world. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and were able to be seated right away on the patio. Everything we ordered was good to perfect. Two of us ordered hamburgers which were perfect. One was the alpine burger and the other was a build your own. One with no pink and one with pink and both were juicy and full of flavor. Another ordered the Pesto Pizza Salad which they absolutely loved and would recommend if you are a fan of pesto. It is pesto and cheese and sandwiched between what looks like a pizza crust. They described it as a pizza quesadilla. The salad was crisp and the dressing, vinaigrette, was good but ask for extra. The fries, sweet potato fries, pork rinds, and onion rings were all delicious.
