Raton, NM! I had never really spent a lot of time here but we made a trip out to see my cousin's ranch. We arrived for happy hour and ordered beers from the local brewery. Our service was on point and the beers quenched my thirst. This place also serves food and appetizers are great when drinking beer. This place is tucked in the down town of Raton. We ordered the brisket sandwich and it was f-Ing delicious. The bacon jam took it to the next level, and the creamy sriracha added some heat but did not overwhelm the complex flavors of the smoky beef. We were intrigued by the battered elote bites. These charred corn kernels with a blend of five cheeses, lime, onion, garlic and peppers are battered and air-fried. These were full of flavor, and I liked that they were air fried. The BLT sandwich comes on bagel and is pretty good. My fave was the Mesa Rider, which is roast beef with bacon jam and it was delish. The beer we ordered consisted of the Banks of Orkney (a scotch ale for the few and brave, strong flavor and acquired taste if you ask me) and Reynard, which is a blended sour ale with an oakey flavor. This is our go to stop when heading to Colorado. The beer and food is good but Greg is the best server and the reason we always come back. He always has a smile on his face and makes sure to take care of every customer. If you want to make a nice meal with excellent service then this is the place for you. Ps. Order the mini corn dogs. We ordered: Rabbit Chaser- Golden Ale 5%. 5/5. Fest Lager- Vienna 5%. 4/5. Karenina Karaiba- sour 4.6%. 3/4. Refreshing, but definitely not a strong sour. The Pear Cider was our favorite! This Ale Cellar is inside the historic, 111 year old, converted Dwyer building. The ambiance inside is incredible, with a long, shiny wood bar and vintage red barstools. Luckily, when I walked inside on a Wednesday night, there were only a few other customers seated at tables and I had the entire bar to myself. The bartender chatted to me about the different beers and I sampled the Rabbit Chaser Golden ale, the stout, Scottish ale, and the pale ale. All of these were very tasty beers, but my favorite was the golden ale. The bartender admitted it was their best selling beer. I met the owner, Jim, and I told him he brewed some might fine beer. This place has a very relaxed atmosphere and I met two friendly dogs inside. They didn't have bottles or cans of the Golden ale, and I forgot my growler at home. Please make the golden ale available in cans and/or bottles in the future. I paid $12 for two golden ales, but could have easily enjoyed a 20 ounce stout as well. It's one of the best stouts I've ever had. My only regret is not asking for a bumper sticker. read more

Colfax Ale Cellar is truly a great place. The service is friendly and good. The seasonal beer (October) is refreshing and yummy. The house mustard that comes with the pretzel appetizer is worthy of a whole jar. I got the mesa rider sandwich which was very good. Bun was pleasantly crispy and the bacon jam added a nice sweetness to the roast beef. Plus the tater tots were well cooked. Good portions for reasonable prices! We have tried just about everything they have on tap - the beers that Colfax Ale Cellar produces are truly world class. There are two that I would put up against any other microbrew out there. We just stopped in to try the place while passing through. Place is kinda cozy, in what looks like it used to be a general store. The bartender was very pleasant and friendly. We tried a blonde ale and a stout. The blonde was flavorful, good balance; very drinkable. The stout provided plenty of flavor without being too heavy or assaultive. One should not go here looking for trendy IPAs. We were told the braumeister has eclectic ideas, leaning toward Belgians, but has little interest in assailing patrons with overhopped concoctions. We were passing through during vacation and needed a rest stop. Wallah! A brewery in the town of Raton, New Mexico! We went in not expecting much but were amazed with their "on point" & incredible beer! I tried a few tasters and decided on the Framboos Raspberry Wheat! This is an exceptional beer! I also enjoyed the Verano 2020 IPA & Rabbit Chaser (Golden Ale). Due to the exceptional tastes, I decided to get crowlers of the IPA & Golden Ale! But the best part of this place is the bartender (Greg)! He was very enthusiastic and explained the beers, told us about the history of the building, offered to give us a tour of the facility, and was an overall positive person.....all at closing time! Who does that anymore? Prior to leaving, we met another employee (did not get his name). He was the kitchen manager. This gentleman was another "positive" person who spoke highly about their beer and food. It says something about the owner when the employees love their job. We would have actually liked to stay longer at this place but had to keep pushing on. Hopefully you'll be able to make it out to Raton, NM.....it's definitely worth the trip!.....& No, I don't no the owner or anyone else who works for this business....just giving a genuinely honest review. Best beer bar none- found this gem in route to Colorado. Jim knows his stuff and probably cares more about the craft than damn near any body! My husband and I received a private tour of the Unsuspecting cellar. Wow- is all I can say. One part Genius one part mad man at work. This place has fantastic brews! The Banks of Orkley brew is incredible! This is NOT an IPA, it is SO much more! They also have an IPA if that is your thing. They brew their beer in the cellar!Greg took fantastic care of me even though he was busy with the late day house keeping to get ready for tomorrow. BF had a margarita while we waited; it was good and bartender was friendly and kicking ass at handling all the different tasks assigned to him. Finally received food at 8:10pm. Ordered: Battered Elote bites, Bavarian Pretzel with a side of cheese, De la Casa Burrito, and carne rojo quesadilla. Disappointed in pretty much everything but the pretzel and cheese sauce. The burrito was all tortilla. The elote bites where soggy like they'd been sitting there for a while. The quesadilla was bland. Over all not wroth the $46 dollars we paid. The environment of the bar was nice and staff was friendly so would consider giving them another try eventually. Maybe try one of the wraps instead of the burrito or quesadilla. read more
