    The teenage pups

Caitlin and Mike were both amazing with their knowledge and obvious love of the dogs and the sport. Definitely a highlight of our trip. And holding the pups was super fun!

I cannot describe how touching this experience was and how I wish everyone would get a chance to at least try it remotely if not in person. When we arrived the whole team was waiting for us holding a few of their puppies ready to share their love with each one of us while someone had our picture taken, then we had a tour of the facility, we witnessed how they prepare the dogs for a sledge ride, hear some iditarod stories and even received probably the best souvenir I've ever had from the team "a personalized card with the picture taken at the beginning". You could tell from the way the dogs were behaving, the overall environment and just the simple interaction with Mike, his family and his team, that, although this is so much hard work continuously done, they do it with so much love and passion for these dogs, I don't have as many words of respect and admiration as they deserve. It touched me deeply when I asked Mike, how does he handle with a loss of a dog, and he said "it's always easier to feed dog more, than one less..." and almost broke down in tears. All my appreciation for these kind of people and I encourage everyone to experience it at least once or contribute in any way you can, because any effort counts!

A great learning experience and tour of Iditarod training. I didn't know this place even existed until someone came into the lobby to pick up customers for the tour. We immediately signed up for it and off we went on the bus. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted by the cutest puppies and photo ops. This was followed by an introduction to older dogs being groomed for future Iditarods. We were then led inside where we learned what it actually takes for a musher to prepare and finish an Iditarod race. The whole tour was fascinating and informative from the time we hopped on the bus to the time we returned to the hotel. Highly recommend!

The staff at Dog Gone It are awesome!

Awesome tour with a great family owned operation. Mike & Caitlin Santos (& their wonderful staff) make you feel so welcome from the minute they pick you until the minute they drop you back at Denali. Caitlin gave an informational talk before arriving in Cantwell to prepare us for our experience. We were greeted with armfuls of puppies & Caitlin took photos of everyone. We were shown the area where the dogs train & live, and learned so much about the lives of these fascinating dogs. Mike has run the Iditarod three times & shares some of his experiences on the trail. If you come to Denali, be sure to visit them for a memorable experience. Before leaving, each person is presented with a copy of the photo taken of you and your puppy. A perfect way to spend time with & learn about the Alaskan Huskies.

I took a liking to this dog named Snap, because she looks just like MY dog! Snap is also the mother of the puppies.

I learned about Denali Jeep Excursions from a local Alaskan resident. So glad I met this person…read morebecause I wasn't aware of Denali Jeep Excursions prior to our meeting. You can easily miss this because there is so much to do around Denali. Our tour guides were Nancy and Abby. They were great! I rode with Abby. She was very personable and knowledgeable. I was quite surprised that she was only on the job for a month. Wow! I would've thought that she was on the job for a year or two. She also drove the jeep safely and was very aware of her surroundings. You may book online at Denali Jeep Excursions website. They're offering May discounts so that was helpful. You may flinch at the price but don't! Just do it! It's so worth it. They give you your money's worth for a full four hours of your time. They offer a morning adventure at 6:30 am for all you early birds and an evening adventure at 6:30 pm. I chose the evening adventure. Also, they shuttle you from either their main office in the heart of the Denali village or one of the cruise ship hotels to a location about 10-15 minutes south to where the jeeps are parked. They also have you sign a safety waiver. I was impressed with how both Nancy and Abby practiced safety. The views on the Denali Highway are stunning! Gasoline Lake was probably my favorite. I enjoyed the mirror like surface of the lake. I would do this all over again! Great job ladies! I highly recommend this!!!

I hate to say it but our visit to Denali National Park wasn't as good as I was expecting. Denali…read moreNational Park is a gorgeous place and provides you with all the views that you would expect to see when you come to Alaska. But your visit is limited... now let me explain. If you have the American the Beautiful park pass, then your admission is free to the park. You can drive your car into the park, but only up to Riley Creek. If you don't have much time for a full day's worth of a visit then this is your best option if you want to visit this national park. But if you do have time, then you definitely want to check out one of the tours or transit buses. Please note that if you wish to take a tour or one of the transit buses, the American the Beautiful park pass does not cover that. You just have to head to the visitor center and purchase your tickets or you can purchase online. On NPS.gov, it warns you that tickets can be sold out if you do not purchase in advance but my husband and I were able to show up and purchase for the time that we wanted. We came on a Thursday morning though, in the month of August. Please note that if you visit Alaska in August, this is towards the end of the summer season and a lot of places already close for the season (Although this is now towards the off peak season and that prices are cheaper, just keep that in mind). Also want to mention that August is the 2nd rainiest month (September and August get the most rain of the year) so make sure to plan for that. There are also a lot of annoying mosquitos too so make sure to bring bug spray for that. Anyways, we took a transit bus. The bus driver is also your park guide to inform you of the sights and also will help you to spot some wildlife of the big 5 (bear, moose, caribou, Dall sheep, wolves). But you are not able to get in and off the bus whenever you want. There were only 2 stops on our visit. If you choose to stay (which you are allowed to), you will have to wait for the next transit bus. The problem with this is if there are no seats available, you will have to wait until the next bus comes by that does have enough seats for you and your party. Because of this, this really worried many of the people on the bus (including us), so we never stayed at one stop. We just got back on the bus when it was time. We did see this problem as our bus driver did stop for a group of 6 and told the group that there were only 4 empty seats on our bus and so they had to wait as our bus left them. Both of the stops on the bus do have restrooms. The first stop just has a porta potty but the second one has numerous of toilets (but the the cleanest and it may be in your best interest to bring some alcohol spray because there are no sinks). Your views for the rest of the park is just limited to what you see out of your window from the bus. I really wished that we could have driven our own car so that we could get in and out whenever we wanted. Although I will say that the bus driver was friendly and very informative. He also answered questions from the group that was on the bus. My husband and I visited this park over 2 days. Only part of the national park is dog friendly (not on the bus). So we were able to have our little girl join us (yep, our little girl dog travels with us and has been to 49 states so far and we have visited all 50 states). Dogs are also allowed to be on some campgrounds, in case you wish to camp (we ended up staying at an Airbnb not too far from the national park). I don't regret visiting this national park and still recommend that you do when you visit Alaska because Alaska truly is beautiful. You really get to see Mother Nature in all of her glory here. But just keep in mind how the visit may be.

Maybe Denali Backcountry Guides ask everyone at time of booking "This is a strenuous hike covering x miles and y elevation gain. Do you feel capable of making that hike?" I don't know. Just know it is disappointing to book a strenuous hike, then go slowly and only cover half. The guide was knowledgeable and the hike was good. With a different group of hikers, it would be 5 star.
