My motorcycle broke down on what couldn't have been a worse possible day and so I pulled out my "trusty" AAA card and proceeded with that circus of automation and tail chasing until I could get on the phone with a "real person" who apparently just reads everything from a script. Nevertheless, I continued with the call against my better judgement. when they told me estimated time was 2.5 hours and I proceeded to ask if there was any way to get a better idea(like maybe calling the tow company and just asking?) they just continued to regurgitate the same scripted information... waste of time... so I thought screw it. I looked online and the closest tow company was Dogherras. It was after office hours for them but I tried my luck anyways. A gentleman answered the phone, quoted me the cost of recovery and told me he could be there in about 30 mins. PERFECT, LETS ROLL! He actually showed up in about 15 mins, was very friendly, loaded up my bike and we headed on down the road. I would highly recommend Dogherras towing to anybody in the Santa Cruz area that needs a recovery. Friendly, professional, and reasonably priced. read more

Our car got stolen; We're a poor family. These are the two main points of this story. Our car was stolen and subsequently recovered by the police who (unfortunately) chose Dogherras' to tow it to their yard. Dogherras' called us and left a message, which we got and returned the following morning. In the phone call, they explained that since we did not get back to them the same day, they were charging us $440 for the towing and the stay at their yard! $440 is a lot of money for a simple tow and one night in a yard. We did not have the money to pay this, and explained that. We asked if there were any ways to mitigate the payment or to spread it out, and were told no. We were told to "take responsibility for our car", as if we had some responsibility in it getting stolen. He claimed he was "a businessman", and needed to make a living (if his business is so bad that $440 will make or break his finances, then that is not my problem). He then said there was nothing he could do for us, but that he would happily sell it for scrap if we took too long. Also, the payments increase every day that our car remains there until he does! So, we, like others, have fallen into the trap made only to take advantage of and extort money from poor people in a bind. We were forced to pay the charge (and not pay the family bills). I have no idea how towing the car from Portola to 17th, then storing it for one night equals $440. Even in their pricing list in the shop showed it would not have been that much. Still, they were unwavering, so we paid and left. So after dealing with having our car stolen once, it's been stolen twice. The first by some loser vagrant who wanted a joy ride, the second by a heartless "businessman" who needs money so badly he's willing to hold our family car hostage in his barbed-wire security lot until we find a way to come up with the money. STEER CLEAR OF THIS BUSINESS! I am not the first reviewer to make claims like this, and I doubt I will be the last. It's a real shame that our police do business with these people. read more

I dont know if its the same people or not but over 10 years ago my ex bf got my car impounded when he was arrested for DUI. I was working night shift and got out of work to find out the "good news" ha.. I went to Dogherras lot with my wallet, bank cards ID etc.. talked to someone ( male ) who informed me of costs etc. I left, went to deposit my paychecks for the last month, and do my banking to cover the costs. Transfer funds etc .. (Remember, this is before bank apps.. online transfers etc) I returned with all my ducks in a row... I was told it would be about 10 minutes wait as they were doing some paper work.. Then they handed me my car key (we had been getting along great and I think they wanted to be nice?) with their employee and said I could go look in my car if I wanted until they were ready for me.. (I had said I had left something very important in the truck and was concerned it was gone? ) So their employee took key and we walked out to look.. When trunk opened there was my saddles, bridles, and all my horse tack. PHEW! What a RELIEF! So the employee shuts trunk and we go back in... I sit happily waiting thinking I just wont the lotto! HA! As I wait I notice that ten minutes has turned into an hour.. I approach them and ask if they are ready for me now? They say - "Sure, lets see your paper work" so I hand it over.. feeling odd as if we had never chatted? What? lol So the lady writes up an invoice - a man is there and he is looking at my paper work and over and over repeats my last name as if it means something ? Anyways they throw up a total that is well over 1200 dollars. Apparently they charged me storage fees, tow fees, and because it was after a specific time it was another day of storage. Had I been helped when I arrived over an hour before it would not be the extra day of storage. I was shocked and not impressed at all. I was with my 3 year old daughter and wondering what just happened.. I was still in my polite phase of life ( I am a total bitch now) and tried hard to negotiate with them - the man didnt care at all and laughed.. the lady told me she was sorry but there was nothing they could do - the STATE Requires they charge this amount.. Really? The state requires you be scandalous? I think not! After negotiating failures and my kid being tired and cranky I paid the lowest amount that I had to pay, was allowed to unload my stuff I could carry and left with no car. To which I seen the next day being driven by someone down my street a block away from the yard and my house. I knew it was my car because of the stickers and license plate # and that it had a dent from camping trip and so on.. I will never refer anyone to them.. looking back.. this taught me to not be such a push over and not just believe people.. I remember looking at their sign on the wall about day use charges.. I remember thinking ..well at least I got here before THAT TIME.. .. Its a bummer they are such heartless people who can take a car from a lady with a toddler.. I've never been treated so poorly by any business owner I've come across in my 30 some years. Dan Dogherra treated his employee and me in a way that I would never expect from a grown man. Right from the get go he took a bad attitude and seemed genuinely offended by my sincere questions regarding a confusing situation with a car in his lot. Dan raised his voice and stated that he is a "businessman" over and over instead of listening to the scenario that I was dealing with. I've heard from multiple sources in local government and law enforcement that there have been complaints regarding his billing practices and demeanor. This business is set up to extract money from people while they are in a bind, and he repeatedly told me he'd rather ruin my credit than listen to a reasonable compromise in relation to a vehicle that was in his lot. I popped two tires hopping a median and my insurance company set me up with these dudes. The driver came much quicker than I am used to and was extremely friendly. He put on the spare and hooked my car up and towed her away. Quick, professional, and nice. I WOULD have recommend them to anyone. HOWEVER, I wasn't happy about the survey they emailed me later, hence the 3 stars instead of 5. Somehow I forgot to give the driver my key and had to bus from Corralitos to Scotts Valley to drop it off at the garage, this was mentioned in the survey and I got an email back from the CEO saying that i had refused to give the driver the key. False. The CEO continues to email me and try to make me feel guilty about my review. He told me he may have to ADJUST the driver's paycheck because I didn't give them 5 stars. The WORST! My poor college student cousin had her car stolen. This awful company picked it up and towed it their lot 2 blocks from my house. I went over there with her to get the car within a couple hours of it being recovered and they wanted almost $500 to return her car. She didn't have that exorbitant sum of money for a job that they spent less than an hour on, so I paid it for her. I think $200 would have been PLENTY to tow the car less than 5 miles and store it for less than 2 hours. I was treated with disrespect in addition. This is complete extortion. What kind of heartless jerk tells a single woman carrying her sick pet to walk home alone down a dark country road in the freezing cold, rather than veer one mile off course to deliver her to safety? This place, apparently. I get it -- it's a towing service, not a taxi service. But refusing to drive literally one mile out of the way to get a woman and her sick pet to safety does not make you a good business person; it makes you a horrible, selfish jerk. I live exactly one mile off the course that the Dogherra's driver would take back to town. I had a sick pet in my arms. We had just waited 2 hours on the side of the road to get the vehicle towed to the mechanic. All my friends were still at work, and there is no taxi service in the mountains. To top it off, dusk was coming, it was freezing cold, and there is no shoulder (much less street lights) on the country road leading to my house. Better pray the next time your daughter's, sister's or wife's car breaks down on the freeway in winter at dusk that Dogherra's is not the tow company your insurance company calls to get you. They would rather burn in Hell than do anything beyond the barest minimum. read more

The driver was actually happy for us, and when I asked if there would be a charge for coming out, he said, "How about a handshake?" The vehicle was being stored while my son was incarcerated and while I understand that they are a business, their charges are unreasonable, unethical and take advantage of those who are already in a tough situation. However, in a car that gets 27 mpg, mine, I ran of fuel again, yes I said again, after only 13 miles. I also had to pay the driver for him going back to the towing area. I got charged 200 dollars from summit rd to santa cruz. To top it off this guy was rude once again when i arrived at home. Rude customer service, left me and my baby stranded on the side of a dangerous road, because they did not want to deal with the road closure. They were rude on the phone when I called to let them know about the closure and that I had a baby with me. There was an alternate route but that must have been too much work for them and they just canceled my order. I would call around and use them as a last resort. read more

I've been meaning to write this review for a while. Several months ago, my motorcycle broke down north of Santa Cruz and I called my roadside assistance service and they got me in touch with Dogherra's. My driver, Shawn, was a great guy, and was very careful about getting the bike on the truck. Unfortunately, it was the weekend of the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival and my final destination was in San Francisco. Despite several hours of delay because of the traffic situation - and lots of rerouting due to street closures - Dogherra's charged me a very reasonable flat rate for the trip (below estimates from other providers). Shawn was also very entertaining during our ride up the coast. The bike made it home without a scratch on it, and I was able to get it in to a mechanic for service. While I hope to never find myself in the same situation again, Dogherra's will be the first place I call. read more

Last night, I received the call that I was dreading. Our bug convertible, shop queen that it is, would not start. I troubleshot it over the phone with my daughter, but nothing worked. I drove to her location, and tried myself, to no avail. I pulled out my Farmer's insurance info, called and got roadside assistance. I was told that help would be forty five minutes to an hour away. I hung up. FIVE MINUTES LATER my phone rings, and a man says "This is Cesar from Dogherra's, which side of the parking lot are you in?" I jumped out of the car where I waited with my daughter, and flagged him over. No easy task, since his rig has the hydraulic flat bed, but a seventeen point flawless turn later, he was right in position to snag and hoist our very dead, but cute, bug. He attached the hooks, drew tension, then removed one glove and wrapped the cable to pad the cable to prevent damage to our faring strip when the cable drew tension. He used the steering wheel to properly align our vehicle to the tilted platform, then continued to gently hoist our car. Like magic, it was done. Elapsed time between panicked call and back of the truck, 22.3 minutes!! Hauled it to our mechanic, then took the same care in reverse to put my dead car exactly where I asked him to. All done with politeness, courtesy, caution, and a smile on his face. Cesar said he had only been doing this work six months, but wow what a pro! I highly recommend Dogherra's Towing. From the initial call with Dan, he was helpful, friendly and flexible, exactly as described below. Was given a VERY reasonable price, considering it was a Sunday afternoon. When the driver arrived he was timely (just as I was told), kind and had great customer service skills. It was obvious he had done this type of service before, which was great as he had to stop both lanes of traffic for a few minutes, so he was quick to ensure less wait time for the other drivers. Was very happy with the service and in fact, there was another driver with a similar issue and I recommended to the X5 driver that he use their service as well, since I had gotten such a fair price (vs. the unbelievable prices I was quoted overpriced rates by over 5 other tow services). Was happy with the service from the initial call, to paying for the service. Would recommend the service and I have saved Dogherras' number in my phone, should I need it in the future! My boyfriend blew out a tire so we called our insurance company for roadside assistance and they connected us with Dogherras. Initially, the dispatcher was very calming and tried to make light of the situation and let me know my tow would come in about 45-60 mins due to other calls ahead. I understood and waited. After an hour I decided to call and check in - a different dispatcher answered and seemed agitated from the get go. I explained my insurance co. called them and I was told an ETA of about an hour but it's been longer. He started raising his voice and speaking over me insisting he'd told me it'd be way longer and that he hadn't heard from my insurance company at all. I don't know how good their services are since I never got a chance to meet the driver. I called my insurance co. and had them change the Tow Co. because I didn't appreciate the second dispatchers accusatory tone and how he handled the situation. I wasn't being demanding or yelling at him, I was just calling to get new information. He had no reason to yell at me! That one star is for the first dispatcher I spoke to.
