I am so so grateful for John and Sara for helping my sweet boy, Sully. Sully initially came into my home as a foster dog. As he settled in my home, he became increasingly aggressive towards other people -- friends, family, and strangers alike, whether in the home or outside of the home. Sully was even aggressive towards my husband, and it felt like I was at a loss. I needed to do something before he actually ended up hurting someone. After explaining what was happening with Sully with the organization I was fostering from, they said they would need to put him down for the safety of the community. I couldn't let that happen, so I decided to keep him and find professional help. This is where John came in. After doing research online, I came across his Yelp page, where there were raving reviews of him helping aggressive dogs, so I took a chance. On his first day meeting John, Sully growled, hissed, and lunged at John. Sully tried to bite both him and me. John spent about an hour with me explaining what was going to happen and some training basics, and honestly, it was hard for me to focus because I was so nervous of Sully hurting someone in the moment. John was very patient, and showed me 5x how to hold a leash properly because I just couldn't focus from nervousness. I've never seen Sully so aggressive, and John explained it's because it was the first time someone was checking him and keeping him in his place. Sully stayed with John for a little over two weeks, and in that time, they went on ADVENTURES. I mentioned to John that Sully was afraid of water, aggressive with strangers, and other very specific things, and John made sure to tackle all of them. He sent me pictures and videos of his adventures throughout their time together. They went on a ferry, hiked to a waterfall, and so so much more. When there was a concern or something to celebrate, John was sure to communicate with us what was going on. In addition, due to personal circumstances, we needed to have Sully stay with John a few more days, and John was so understanding and accommodated us. I finally have my sweet boy back, and I see so much of a difference. He is calmer, more responsive, and he's running through my sprinklers now. LOL. It still takes him a bit to warm up to other people, but he's not as on guard or on edge as he was before. I'm excited to continue his progress at home, and I'm sure we will see John and Sara for future stays! Here are just a few of my favorite pictures of his adventures with John and Sara. :)

Louie completed board and train at Dogtown K9 Care and I'm genuinely impressed with the results. He's more focused, calmer, and easier to manage day-to-day. The staff was great to work with and made me feel like Louie was in good hands the entire time. Highly recommend!!

We needed to board our dogs and while looking for boarding, my sister found Dogtown K9 Care on Yelp. They offered a 2-week board and train. After reading the reviews, we knew this was the place for Tucker. He had lots of behavioral issues, so this was the perfect opportunity to have them addressed. My sister also needed to board her pup, so we decided it would be best to train both, since they live in the same house. It was the best thing we could have ever done, and the results were AMAZING!!! Tucker was extremely afraid of strangers. One of the biggest problems was that he was afraid of our son who lives in the back house. Tucker didn't grow up around our son, so he was just another stranger to him. Just hearing him come through the gate was enough to set him off. He would panic, bark non-stop and finally, he would run and hide. This behavior was a daily occurrence. We were concerned about his well-being, with him being constantly stressed. Somewhere we had lost the peace in our home and he had everyone stressed out. He was also leash aggressive and very hard to control since he was 85 lbs. His leash aggression had become so difficult that I finally gave up walking him. The sad part was, he was a great walker, until he saw another animal. I just couldn't take the chance of losing control and people were hoping like heck that I had a good handle on him. While Tucker was going through the board and train, John would send videos of their adventures and his training progress. He targeted Tucker's specific issues by exposing him to many different situations so that he could address them. It was really exciting to see his progress. The day before we picked him up, John sent me a list of training fundamentals that they had been working on. He said he would go over everything when we went to get Tucker. I was really pleased that he gave me a reference sheet so that I had the ability to remain consistent and progress in his training. We met John at the park and the first issue he addressed was Tucker's fear of our son. He had our son take the leash first and went through all the commands and Tucker was very responsive. Then he had our son pet him. That was the first time our son has ever touched him, and it has been 2 years. WE WERE ALL AMAZED! This has helped Tucker to work through his fear of him. He also taught our pups quiet, so if he starts to react to my son, we can say quiet, and he is. This has brought so much peace to our home. He is so much more relaxed, and so are we! He was also crate trained, which has been super helpful in creating a safe space for him. Now if a stranger comes over, we can have him go into his crate, where he is still around the stranger, but feels safe. While he's in his crate, he doesn't feel the need to bark and panic. He likes it so much that he puts himself in the crate just to relax. John taught him to heel and he addressed the leash aggression head on. He taught me how to handle him when he starts to go off, to settle him back down. He is sooo much better and we practice on our daily walks. Now it is such a pleasure taking him on walks and I am confident that I can handle him in all situations. Doing the Board & Train, by taking him out of his environment was the best thing I could have ever done. This allowed Tucker to fully focus on his training and not fall back into his comfort zone. It also allowed me to have a jump start on his training by continuing doing what John had taught both of us. Years ago, I paid a personal trainer to come to my house to try to get a handle on his issues, but there were very little results to show for it. This was a game changer. I highly recommend John at Dogtown K9 Care, he is a great trainer. The results were simply AMAZING!!! It's like I got a new pup. We now have the peace back in our home and the dogs no longer rule the roost, we do!

We couldn't be more thankful for the incredible experience we had with Dogtown K9 Care! When our dog, Bruce, started becoming aggressive, we never imagined we'd need to invest in professional training. But after working with John, we can confidently say it was worth every penny. If you are scrolling through reviews and struggling to decide if Dogtown K9 Care can benefit your dog, I am here to tell you, John and Sara are incredible. Bruce went away for 2 weeks and came home a better behaved dog. John was responsive from the start. I sent a message late at night or very early in the morning and I had a return message the next day. I spent a few sleepless nights trying to figure out how we were going to help our dog. Each day he seemed to get more aggressive. John was great at putting my mind at ease and confident he knew how to help us. We felt comfortable sending Bruce with him for a 2 week board and train. Bruce bit John when they first met and John still agreed to take him on. John kept us updated with pictures and progress reports. It was fun to see the progress. Our dog was out in fun public places with people and other dogs. When Bruce came back, he was definitely an improved version of himself. He was calmer, more manageable and seemed more responsive. We still have some training to do on our end. John gave us some written direction along with having each family member go through getting Bruce to sit, heel, stay, etc. when he brought Bruce back to us. I am extremely grateful for John and Sara. Like I said, worth every penny. On our road to success!

Dogtownk9care is exactly the place that my new 5 month puppy and my fiancée and I needed, an affordable and effective dog training place. John, the owner, is an extremely knowledgeable and an affable person. The style of training is balanced, both positive and stern correctiveness was taught to all their dogs. Our puppy is a Bassetoodle (Bassett Hound + Poodle mix) and we were having issues with our pup's reactivity and stubbornness, so we decided to reach out to John about the 2 week boarding and training course. With plenty of research about dog training places around us, we ultimately chose Dogtownk9care because of the affordability and all the reviews. Our first interaction with John was through SMS, where we discussed what the 2 week board and train consists and what to expect, as well as the costs. The topic of costs initially made me skeptical since John wanted us to pay him 4 days before we sent our dog to training, which made me think that this might have been a scam. After a lengthy phone call with John, he made us reassure to put our faith on him. TLDR, if you are reading my review, better to get the answer directly from John about the reasoning of paying up front. After all the documentations and papers, John and his daughter came to picked up our puppy from our house and spent about an hour discussing fundamentals of puppy training, food and equipments like type of leashes, collars and crates. During the 2 weeks, John kept us updated with photos and videos to assure us that our puppy was doing great. (Amazing editing skills, John!) 2 weeks went by, and our pup's came back and we ended up meeting at the Irvine Spectrum for pick up, where our pup's behavior transformed completely into a happy and playful puppy. He helped our puppy socialize with our dogs and showed us his new list of commands which was sent all to us. We had about an 1 hour crash course on how to handle our puppy properly and that was that. About a day later after getting back home, we took our puppy out for a walk and suddenly he relapsed into his reactivity, so we contacted John immediately, in which we ended up doing about session a week later. In that session, we realized that we were not following his puppy handling properly. The change on our pup was immediate when we started handling properly. We learned as owners that its impactful to be lenient and consistent with the training and always to be calm, so the puppy don't follow suit. As John would say, "Our dogs are not meant to take over our lives, but more so to enhance our lives." Overall, our experience with the 2 weeks board and training and that learning session was life changing for both our puppy and us. We are so grateful to John and his daughter for taking care of our pup and continously helping us in our parenthood on our puppy. We will be going back to them for any of our dogs needs!

We are so happy we decided to use Dogtown K9 Care! We rescued a puppy from the shelter and struggled to get her behavior issues corrected. After a lot of research I decided to do the 2 week board and train with John. It was worth every penny! Our girl came back so much more well behaved and we are all better for it. John sent us regular updates and videos so that we knew our girl was getting lived on and cares for and got to see her progress. I can't recommend this program enough. I have told multiple friends about it and they have taken their pups, and feel the same! They are all happy with the results. If you're considering this program- do it!!! It's a great investment in your dog!

I really am grateful for John and his daughter being able to help us train Rocky. Our dog is 5 years old and a cattle dog mix. We have had issues with aggression towards strangers, nipping ankles, and trying to herd us as we walk. John is very knowledgeable and patient with the dogs but also their owners. We did the two weeks board and train program. Rocky came back happy and let John pet him which is huge for us because it's a first. Blessed to have found him!

John had our GoldenDoodle, Harley, for a 2 week board and train program and we are very satisfied with the care and training Harley received. We found Dogtown K9 care on yelp but they also have an instagram, which is very helpful to see all the dogs they've trained. As others have mentioned, John does ask for the money upfront, which could cause some hesitancy, but his business is legit and it's just the way he chooses to do business. The 2 week training program comes with an initial session (when he picks up the dog to see the dog in his environment) and another session when he returns the dog (to work with dog owners). The moment you meet John you know he is well competent and means business. The animals love him and respond to him immediately. We got Harley from a friend at 4 months and immediately knew he could benefit from puppy training. Harley was mouthing ALOT and he had all the puppy energy. While away, we got all the cute photos and videos and could instantly see Harley's progress. When we got Harley back, the mouthing completely stopped and he knew all the commands that were taught to him. John showed us the commands and how to hold the leash when walking him and now we can all walk Harley, including my kids too! Although our training session is over, we would entrust John with future boarding needs or any future sessions! John will still pop in here and there to ensure Harley is still making progress. :) Highly recommend the investment!

I'm going to update this one more time before I move to a different state. John and his daughter are the best duo you can have. He's so caring and understanding when life just happens and I can't thank him for teach my pup how to be the best kinda of pup there is. Thank you John for the hours of hard work that you had put him. I can't wait to work with you again in the future.

I can't say enough great things about John. From day one, johns knowledge, and genuine love for dogs was clear. He took the time to understand my dog's personality, challenges, and needs, and developed a tailored training plan that delivered real results.

Just a few texts from John
    Allison J.

A little late in writing this review. But below are some of the text messages John had left me along with a voice-mail of just overall rude, dismissive, and disrespectful. John and I had a miscommunication to where he thought I could not decide on a day to schedule my dog. It was a misunderstanding to which I apologized for. But according to him, I am a narcissist human being. I normally would not leave bad reviews on anyone. But after the way he talked to me and the messages I received. I will not have my dog trained by such a disrespectful person I'm sure he's a great trainer. But the words he said were hurtful. I was not going to post this review but I am hopeful no one will have to be talked to this way again

    Graduated dog

Can't say enough good things about working with John and Sara! We originally booked our extremely high energy, escape artist, German shepherd mix for a two week board and train. Unfortunately, our dog ended up getting sick while he was with John (nothing related to the boarding caused the illness) and being out of town we were worried about our dog. John took amazing care of him and communicated with us regarding his status through the time period we were out of town and dropped him back off to us as soon as we returned. Our dog still showed great progress with the shortened, impacted training and we were looking forward to sending him back to complete the training course. Flash forward a month later and we were able to send our dog back for the remainder of the training. Our dog came back happy, healthy and well trained. I would recommend John and Sara to anyone who could benefit from any level of dog training or boarding.

    River

Our dog went to the two week board and train. John communicated the whole time throughout the process and has done check ins after the two weeks to make sure we were all doing well. River is doing amazing on walks, no more pulling. River listens to our commands well, overall so many improvements. We still are working with River but feel John helped a lot with the foundation. Truly thankful and worth it.

Ask the Community - Dogtown K9 Care

Hello, do you work with reactive/anxious dogs?

Yes. We can help with anxious, fearful, nervous, and even aggressive dogs. We have helped a lot of rescue and covid dogs with these types of confidence and socialization issues.

What is the youngest age of a dog that you can sit?

About 4 months, but it is more enjoyable for pups that are fully vaccinated.

Juan has also been excellent with communication, always taking the time to answer our questions and provide guidance. We highly recommend him and his team to anyone looking for quality dog training.

Let me start by saying I would give Juan and his team a 100/10, and here's why:…read more When I was looking for training for my 4-month-old Cavapoo, I did a lot of research before making a decision. From day one, Juan provided exceptional customer service. He was never pushy, took the time to explain the training process, answered all of my questions thoroughly, and was always easy to reach whenever I needed him. I ultimately chose the 5-week off-leash obedience program. As difficult as it was to leave my puppy for that long, it was absolutely worth it. My dog came home calmer, more confident, and with a much better understanding of commands such as stay, down, place, come, yes, and no. She listens significantly better and is clearly more focused and well-mannered. Oh and let me not forgot to mention she is now crate trained and potty trained. She now sleeps comfortably in her crate and understands that potty time happens outside. The facility itself is beautiful, private, and extremely clean. I also want to give a special shoutout to Dom for the incredible care and dedication he showed my dog during her stay. If you're considering professional training for your dog, I highly recommend reaching out to Juan and his team. The investment was one of the best decisions I've made for my dog. and I'm so grateful for the foundation they've helped build for her future.

He stayed from Friday through Monday, and my friend picked him up for me. I was really nervous about leaving him because you always hear horror stories on TikTok and the news about animals being mistreated. I am so happy to say that Zoomies was amazing. They took great care of my dog, and he was so happy when he came home. My dog is very, very shy, and the staff went the extra mile to make him feel comfortable. That meant a lot to me. I will definitely be using them again in the future, and I now feel confident leaving my fur baby with them, even for longer vacations. I also want to mention how clean the facility is. When you walk in, you do not smell urine at all. I know accidents happen with dogs, but it is clear they take pride in keeping everything clean and quickly cleaning up any messes. Seeing how clean and well cared for the facility was gave me so much peace of mind. I truly felt that my dog was in a safe, clean, and loving environment. One last thing. The name Zoomies is actually what first caught my attention. It is such a cute and perfect name for a dog daycare. I am so glad I trusted them with my pup because they completely lived up to the name.

He sent us pictures and let us know his observations throughout the week. He was kind enough to pick up our dogs at the beginning which was perfect for us as we were busy packing and working before our trip. Then we picked up the dogs at the end of the stay. I liked that our dogs didn't seem strange or overly tired after their stay, which is typical of our experience using a daycare facility. We will definitely be working with Raymond again for training of our 2 year old and boarding.

First thing you will notice is his place for crating feels very home like and natural. He gives each dog what is needed after full review along, with recommendations : prices are very fair . He has extensive programs year round plus weekly meet ups : if you went through his program they are free or jump in for a small fee. And well worth it . His groups sessions feel very intimidate and he will address each dog so it feels like a 1 on 1 session which he does also read the room well so if there's any nervous dogs in there he will make sure everyone is safe . Keep in mind he's very vocal and advocates for the animals so if you aren't pulling your weight he will have a discussion with you . Clients can get fired in general just be a good dog parent and you will be fine. This is a husband and wife team and both are excellent and Caring . They love my dog the most wink wink lol ; Look no further Raymond and his wife are the ones you need : enjoy

I had previously tried Board and Train programs at Sit Means Sit twice, but they didn't help with KB's anxiety at all. Tony was a completely different experience. What sets Tony apart is how thorough he is. He didn't just give commands; he constantly explained the "why" behind KB's behaviors. He was also incredibly supportive of me, helping me work through my own fears and nervousness. Because of his guidance, I can now actually play box with KB without the fear that he'll suddenly react toward me. We covered so much ground, including: * Command & Muzzle Work: Building a foundation of safety and communication. * Boundaries: KB used to be glued to my side whenever I answered the door. Now, he can stay calmly on the couch while I greet someone, and he stays indoors even when I go through the patio door. * Safety & Care: Tony was always so accommodating with scheduling. If it was too hot for an outdoor session, he would proactively suggest changing it for KB's safety. If you feel stuck or overwhelmed with your dog's behavior, go to Tony. He turned everything around for us, and I'm so grateful for the confidence he's given both me and KB.
