I am so so grateful for John and Sara for helping my sweet boy, Sully. Sully initially came into my home as a foster dog. As he settled in my home, he became increasingly aggressive towards other people -- friends, family, and strangers alike, whether in the home or outside of the home. Sully was even aggressive towards my husband, and it felt like I was at a loss. I needed to do something before he actually ended up hurting someone. After explaining what was happening with Sully with the organization I was fostering from, they said they would need to put him down for the safety of the community. I couldn't let that happen, so I decided to keep him and find professional help. This is where John came in. After doing research online, I came across his Yelp page, where there were raving reviews of him helping aggressive dogs, so I took a chance. On his first day meeting John, Sully growled, hissed, and lunged at John. Sully tried to bite both him and me. John spent about an hour with me explaining what was going to happen and some training basics, and honestly, it was hard for me to focus because I was so nervous of Sully hurting someone in the moment. John was very patient, and showed me 5x how to hold a leash properly because I just couldn't focus from nervousness. I've never seen Sully so aggressive, and John explained it's because it was the first time someone was checking him and keeping him in his place. Sully stayed with John for a little over two weeks, and in that time, they went on ADVENTURES. I mentioned to John that Sully was afraid of water, aggressive with strangers, and other very specific things, and John made sure to tackle all of them. He sent me pictures and videos of his adventures throughout their time together. They went on a ferry, hiked to a waterfall, and so so much more. When there was a concern or something to celebrate, John was sure to communicate with us what was going on. In addition, due to personal circumstances, we needed to have Sully stay with John a few more days, and John was so understanding and accommodated us. I finally have my sweet boy back, and I see so much of a difference. He is calmer, more responsive, and he's running through my sprinklers now. LOL. It still takes him a bit to warm up to other people, but he's not as on guard or on edge as he was before. I did a lot of shopping around and, after speaking with John on the phone, I had confidence that this guy knew what he was doing. He came over for ONE SESSION. He and I worked with my very excitable 8 month old Enzo the mini golden doodle, and within the span of 90 minutes, got him to calm down and act like a good dog and not just an out of control puppy. Over the weekend, John got in touch with me a few times to see how Enzo was doing and to give me some advice on things we didn't cover in our session. Enzo now heels perfectly and climbs and descends stairs at my pace instead of constantly pulling me off balance. We needed to board our dogs and while looking for boarding, my sister found Dogtown K9 Care on Yelp. They offered a 2-week board and train. After reading the reviews, we knew this was the place for Tucker. He had lots of behavioral issues, so this was the perfect opportunity to have them addressed. My sister also needed to board her pup, so we decided it would be best to train both, since they live in the same house. It was the best thing we could have ever done, and the results were AMAZING!!! Tucker was extremely afraid of strangers. One of the biggest problems was that he was afraid of our son who lives in the back house. Tucker didn't grow up around our son, so he was just another stranger to him. Just hearing him come through the gate was enough to set him off. He would panic, bark non-stop and finally, he would run and hide. This behavior was a daily occurrence. We were concerned about his well-being, with him being constantly stressed. Somewhere we had lost the peace in our home and he had everyone stressed out. He was also leash aggressive and very hard to control since he was 85 lbs. His leash aggression had become so difficult that I finally gave up walking him. The sad part was, he was a great walker, until he saw another animal. I just couldn't take the chance of losing control and people were hoping like heck that I had a good handle on him. While Tucker was going through the board and train, John would send videos of their adventures and his training progress. He targeted Tucker's specific issues by exposing him to many different situations so that he could address them. It was really exciting to see his progress. The day before we picked him up, John sent me a list of training fundamentals that they had been working on. He said he would go over everything when we went to get Tucker. I was really pleased that he gave me a reference sheet so that I had the ability to remain consistent and progress in his training. We met John at the park and the first issue he addressed was Tucker's fear of our son. He had our son take the leash first and went through all the commands and Tucker was very responsive. Then he had our son pet him. That was the first time our son has ever touched him, and it has been 2 years. WE WERE ALL AMAZED! This has helped Tucker to work through his fear of him. He also taught our pups quiet, so if he starts to react to my son, we can say quiet, and he is. This has brought so much peace to our home. He is so much more relaxed, and so are we! He was also crate trained, which has been super helpful in creating a safe space for him. Now if a stranger comes over, we can have him go into his crate, where he is still around the stranger, but feels safe. While he's in his crate, he doesn't feel the need to bark and panic. He likes it so much that he puts himself in the crate just to relax. John taught him to heel and he addressed the leash aggression head on. He taught me how to handle him when he starts to go off, to settle him back down. He is sooo much better and we practice on our daily walks. Now it is such a pleasure taking him on walks and I am confident that I can handle him in all situations. Doing the Board & Train, by taking him out of his environment was the best thing I could have ever done. This allowed Tucker to fully focus on his training and not fall back into his comfort zone. It also allowed me to have a jump start on his training by continuing doing what John had taught both of us. Years ago, I paid a personal trainer to come to my house to try to get a handle on his issues, but there were very little results to show for it. This was a game changer. John, the owner, is an extremely knowledgeable and an affable person. The style of training is balanced, both positive and stern correctiveness was taught to all their dogs. Our puppy is a Bassetoodle (Bassett Hound + Poodle mix) and we were having issues with our pup's reactivity and stubbornness, so we decided to reach out to John about the 2 week boarding and training course. With plenty of research about dog training places around us, we ultimately chose Dogtownk9care because of the affordability and all the reviews. Our first interaction with John was through SMS, where we discussed what the 2 week board and train consists and what to expect, as well as the costs. The topic of costs initially made me skeptical since John wanted us to pay him 4 days before we sent our dog to training, which made me think that this might have been a scam. After a lengthy phone call with John, he made us reassure to put our faith on him. TLDR, if you are reading my review, better to get the answer directly from John about the reasoning of paying up front. After all the documentations and papers, John and his daughter came to picked up our puppy from our house and spent about an hour discussing fundamentals of puppy training, food and equipments like type of leashes, collars and crates. During the 2 weeks, John kept us updated with photos and videos to assure us that our puppy was doing great. (Amazing editing skills, John!) 2 weeks went by, and our pup's came back and we ended up meeting at the Irvine Spectrum for pick up, where our pup's behavior transformed completely into a happy and playful puppy. He helped our puppy socialize with our dogs and showed us his new list of commands which was sent all to us. We had about an 1 hour crash course on how to handle our puppy properly and that was that. About a day later after getting back home, we took our puppy out for a walk and suddenly he relapsed into his reactivity, so we contacted John immediately, in which we ended up doing about session a week later. In that session, we realized that we were not following his puppy handling properly. The change on our pup was immediate when we started handling properly. We learned as owners that its impactful to be lenient and consistent with the training and always to be calm, so the puppy don't follow suit. John had our GoldenDoodle, Harley, for a 2 week board and train program and we are very satisfied with the care and training Harley received. We found Dogtown K9 care on yelp but they also have an instagram, which is very helpful to see all the dogs they've trained. As others have mentioned, John does ask for the money upfront, which could cause some hesitancy, but his business is legit and it's just the way he chooses to do business. The 2 week training program comes with an initial session (when he picks up the dog to see the dog in his environment) and another session when he returns the dog (to work with dog owners). The moment you meet John you know he is well competent and means business. The animals love him and respond to him immediately. We got Harley from a friend at 4 months and immediately knew he could benefit from puppy training. Harley was mouthing ALOT and he had all the puppy energy. While away, we got all the cute photos and videos and could instantly see Harley's progress. When we got Harley back, the mouthing completely stopped and he knew all the commands that were taught to him. John showed us the commands and how to hold the leash when walking him and now we can all walk Harley, including my kids too! My husband and I have a 7 month old Bernedoodle and we've been dedicated to her puppy training since her gotcha day at 8 weeks. She knows her basic commands and is fully potty trained, but still needed refining. Since we were going to be out of town for 10 days during the holidays, we wanted to continue her training with a professional who can not only guide her, but also care for her with lots of love and attention. We were very nervous because we've never entrusted anyone to care for Waffles for a lengthy period of time other than the in-laws and have heard some horror stories, but John helped us feel at ease and confident in his expertise. We are so grateful for the work he's done with our pup! John is resourceful, knowledgeable, extremely intentional and detailed-oriented with a dog's growth and well-being. On the day of pick-up, he came to our place to first suss out Waffles and her mannerisms at a comfortable setting in order to get a gauge on what he would focus on during those 10 days of boarding and training. Then he provided a 45-minute at-home lesson where he guided us on how to properly leash train so that we're well equipped to continue training even when he's not around. He consistently sent us updates on Waffles' progress with full transparency, which also included lots of photos and videos. Some things he did with her are exposure to new environment (lots!), socialization with other dogs, leash training, crate training, recall... and what's also amazing is that he has his daughter work with him in caring for and training all these pups. They are the perfect duo. John was never aggressive with his approach. He was firm when he articulated his commands and very gentle when introducing Waffles to new things. We found out through one of his updates that she's timid around other dogs, but warms up after some time. John always supervised play time and made sure Waffles wasn't overwhelmed by the other dogs. He also had another Goldendoodle in his care around the same time that helped Waffles be more confident. I share this piece because we really loved that he was using every opportunity to utilize a dog's strengths in helping other dogs. When we got Waffles back, some things we immediately recognized: recall is AMAZING, responds so well to commands, does sit-stay perfectly, does not pull anymore on a leash, doesn't fuss anymore in the crate. The works he's done on her in just 10 days is incredible. Waffles loves John and we know we will be sending her back to him whenever we are out of town! Our 1 and a half year old male goldendoodle, Pretzel, just finished doing a 2 week training program with John (Dogtown K9 Care).  We are so happy with the training and care he received!!  Why did we send him? While we have done pleanty of training here at home, we felt he needed more extensive, longer periods of training and that was so hard to do with us both working full time. We also felt we just didn't know what to do to correct some of the behaviors.  I HATED trying to walk him. It was awful and stressful. He was easily distracted, pulled on the leash, freaked out (with excitement) when another dog came by, tried to lunge at people and greet them. He is super social and it was so hard to control him. We also struggled with him jumping on us and guests. Play biting us, and humping us as well. He was barking at things out the window or on walks.  We LOVE him, but he's a handful haha.  After spending two weeks with John, Pretzel is doing great and capable of the following:  -walking in heel (it's so wonderful! We love taking him on walks now!!) -he is learning to be more controlled around other dogs.  -he is able to walk nicely past people on walks now.  -he is no longer jumping on us! -Very minimal play mouthing that is EASILY corrected now that John taught us how to properly correct him.  -he is learning to be quiet when looking out the window or around other dogs on walks, playing, etc.  Pretzel is doing great and WE feel way more confident and capable as his owners now that John has taught US how to teach Pretzel and has given us the proper tools to do so. It's been such a turn around!  During the 2 weeks, John took Pretzel and some of the other dogs to places like parks, Home Depot, and the Orange Circle. All types of places I NEVER would have wanted to attempt to take him haha. But now we can! We can actually bring him with us now because he is so much more well behaved and we know how to properly correct him. It's honestly something I thought would take so long to get there, but John managed it in 2 weeks!!! It's been really great to be able to enjoy our dog and not feel stressed out by trying to control him and failing to do so. We love taking him places now!  John is so kind and very informative. He sent lots of pictures and videos. You can tell he really loves dogs and treated our sweet guy as his own. WOW. What can I say about John. I have an unruly Malinois and John changed his aggressive behavior during walks in just one session. I wanted to add an updated rating here for training with Dogtown. I did the board and train option instead of just board this month for a 2 week or so stay at Dogtown. Our dogs were pretty unbehaved (mostly my fault) and John had them listening, sitting and heeling better than they ever had after the boarding/training time was over. John also gave us some great tips on the right collars to use and how to keep them behaved at doors and in general throughout the day. John is the best dog whisperer your dog could ever meet so be sure to utilize him for both boarding and training. It is a great 2 for 1 option and very reasonably priced! read more

Jon did an amazing job with our sharpei/GERMAN SHEPHERD/cattle dog mix. Dollie would play aggressively with our senior dogs. We had to keep them separated. On walks she would pull so hard until she was foaming at the mouth and she would leave deep imprints on my palms. She is now calm and patient with both our dogs. We have brought the separation fence down. We live in harmony. She's now easy to walk. She heels, sits, and stays. I would have never been able to accomplish this in 2 weeks! John knows and loves dogs very well and it is sweet to see that his daughter is has followed his footsteps and helps to tend to and care for dogs. I have two Siberian Huskies and they are puppies who are very smart and received basic training. However, unfortunately, leash walking and crate training has been so hard to master and that is when John came to the rescue. I was hesitant to have them boarded and a trainer as I did not know what to expect, how the dogs would be treated, just so much unknown. John came to meet the dogs and observed them and their interactions for over an hour. Once he took the dogs to his boarding home to work and train them, he sent daily texts and videos as well to show the progress of how they were doing. I had sent over food and necessary supplements for my dogs with John when he took them for 10 days and he gave me frequent updates on their food intake and adjustment period. I appreciate how he dropped off the dogs and even after their training period, I used John's service again to board the dogs over the weekend while out of town. He is accommodating and kind enough to pick them up and drop them off to the client's availability. All that to say, I am forever grateful to have the dogs crate trained - it was a night and day difference. read more

I have used Dogtown K9 Care for over a year and let me tell you, no one compares. I have a reactive, overly protective (very large) husky/shepherd/wolf dog who would not listen to commands and wanted to attack everyone he didn't know prior to coming to Dogtown. I'm a pretty little lady so for my safety and his, this was an issue. John helped him be much more manageable on leash, easier to control in public and overall much better behaved. He gave me the tools necessary to make my life easier and, more importantly, my dog's life safer and less anxiety ridden. He is patient and loving and always works to help you with whatever your dog's specific issues are. he really is a magician with dogs and his lovely daughter Sara who helps out with the pups is SO fantastic with them as well. I was very leery to have my dog boarded and trained anywhere because I've heard horror stories and really did my research so I knew John had good reviews but seeing the change in your dog is the real wow factor. rollo loves going to see "uncle" John and is such a better behaved dog because of him! Wow, John Vienna is the best! A very dear and trusted friend recommended him to us for our yellow lab who had recently an operation for removal of some lumps. I was worried, wondering how he'd do since he'd just had a pretty big surgery, but John was so empathetic and sympathetic with my worrying, you can tell he's a major dog lover. He's super communicative, too, by text and email, and very accommodating when it comes to dates. When he brought our boy back, Hudson couldn't stop saying goodbye to him, so I know he had a good time (I think he might have preferred going back home with him?!)
