Seem more interested in money making practices than the care and wellbeing of the animals. Case in point, couldn't be bothered to call, mail, or text about our dogs follow up booster. Yet had no issues sending a text regarding purchasing flea and tick treatments... Btw, our dogs don't and never have had either pest... The whole time during our visit with their clinic they were trying to sell us various products we nor our dogs needed... I was a new patient at Dogwood veterinary hospital. I had my dog seen once. I had made another appointment for my other dog and there was a family medical emergency and I was overwhelmed and forgot my appointment. I since then have tried calling them to reschedule, but my calls have been blocked!!! I had a wonderful experience when I went the first time. I just don't understand a business who doesn't understand that things happen in people's lives that can sometimes cause them to forget an appointment. read more

I went here based on a Yelp review and it makes me realize more and more how reliable this site can be. I have not seen Dr.Prull but I have heard she's great. But I have seen Dr. Hawkins many times now and he's simply a fantastic vet! He's professional and through. He cares for your pet just as he would his own. He gave me all the options, ones that he recommends, and ones he doesn't necessarily recommend. But that's what I like, he let me choose. Phoenix the kitten is now in perfect health! Just because I haven't mentioned the rest of the staff does not mean that they are not simply awesome, because they are. Uber friendly and helpful, they will get to know, and love your pet. Oh, for the guys out there, the female staff there are really cute just fyi. Also, I would expect the fees to be higher because of how professional and caring they are but was surprised to find that they were not. I hope this pet hospital doesn't change, it rocks! read more

I have a special needs cat who is not nice, calm or easy to handle. She's immensely aggressive. She had a dew claw that had begun to curl in so I knew we needed it clipped and this place ***accepted care credit which is a huge plus!!*** Dr. Hughes did a great job. I can see why people think he's grumpy or gruff, he's just very straight to the point and no nonsense. Our cat clawed the ever loving hell out of the guy and he still treated her great. The older vet tech, Patty, was very nice and easy on my cat. She helped Dr. Hughes hold her down to clip her nails and they worked great as a team. The younger gal who helped too wasn't as great and Dr. Hughes at one point made a face and said "damnit" after my cat clawed him, which I of course thought was toward my cat (and understandably so, I wasn't offended) but he explained when we were in private that she was newer and if she had helped hold my cat differently he wouldn't of gotten clawed the way he did, so he was frustrTed. I appreciated him explaining his demeanor even though he didn't need to. Quick, wonderful, CHEAP! $76 for the exam and nail trimming. I would definitely return. They also have a super cute office kitty and an adorable Great Dane who hang behind the counter. read more

I have enjoyed the vets at Dogwood pet hospital for my dogs and cats for years. Dr. Chuck was excellent and cared for my dog Terra especially. But he has retired, and there is a spinning door of other dog vets that come and go pretty quickly. Their cat vet, Dr. Hughes is great with cats, but not so much for dogs or with bedside manner. When they stabilize with a new dog vet, try them out. I have always loved the techs and the receptionists there. very helpful and caring. read more

Dogwood Pet Hospital is simply amazing. I've NEVER had one bad experience with either Dr Klau or Dr Hawkins. The entire staff for that matter is incredible. The moment you walk in you know you're in good hands. My english bulldog, Charlie, recently had emergency surgery that had to be performed at a different hospital due to the timing of the incident. Dr Klau found out about his surgery and immediately called me to make sure that everything was okay. He was genuinely concerned and it was so thoughtful for him to call . He made sure that I knew he was available if we needed anything at all. It was awesome. Since the surgery he's called to see how Charlie is recovering and I can't tell you how awesome that makes us feel. Everyone at Dogwood, and I mean everyone, is incredible and I would recommend them to anybody. You're in great hands at this place. read more

Giving this a 2 Star because the first time I came here for my dog, the female vet treated us with respect and even offered me to give her a call a week later to let her know of improvements. This isn't my usual vet I go to, but I only go here because of emergencies and with the better reviews than my usual vet I trust them more for more serious issues. Today when I returned, I arrived a little before 6PM on a Tuesday. I was scooted out of the doorway so another dog can get seen while I was told to wait. I was then asked if I needed help, I told the receptionist my dog was bleeding. She looked worried and fidgeted back and forth. She started a sentence with "I don't think anyone here can..." and she stopped, looked back and said, "I'll be right back." I asked, are you limited on doctors? She said yes. She comes back and says "it will be a little bit." About 20 mins later I get called back by this male vet. Older gentleman, that starts off pretty much telling me he can't do anything. He reviews old records, I tell him those records won't do him any good. He puts a muzzle on my dog, insists that I help him because he can't do it on his own. Again, repeats, he can't do anything for me and tells me to go back to my vet. He tells me he doesn't have to tools to cauterize anything. I thank him for his time and leave. I definitely will not be returning for any pet emergencies here. Thanks for your time though. read more

We visited Dogwood for shots for our cat. The staff were friendly, and the Vet seemed competent. I would have given it 5 stars, but the prices were definitely higher than our old vet in Vancouver. But, it is a nice place, and it is in the neighborhood, so we will probably be back. read more

A couple weeks ago, my cat turned 11. We've been using dogwood for her whole life and, being that her life had been so long, I thought it necessary to take her in just to make sure she's doing alright. This time, I saw Dr. klau (although I know Dr. Hawkins as Chuck) and he was just as cute as my grandma had said. He was super helpful too! I found out that because I've stuck with dogwood and used their specialty cat food, my cat is as healthy as a two year-old. This place is great, it's clean and friendly and you can even have a free cup of coffee (or hot chocolate, which is my preference). read more

I recently moved to Gresham from the Seattle area and was not looking forward to the process of trying to find a great Vet to take my furry friend to. Based upon the great reviews and distance to where I live, I decided to test my luck and take my dog to Dogwood. I was so thrilled and relieved! From when I walked into the door to stepping out the door my expericene was top notch. The gal at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. The Vet we saw was Dr. Klau, he was terrific! My dog is a 3 year old Lab, so he was a bit of a wiggle worm. Dr. Klau was very patient with him, when most vets I have seen tend to get a little frustrated and seem rushed. Dr. Klau was very informative and set a plan to help get my dogs allergy issue resolved. I will most definitely keep going back to them and I highly recommend them to anyone searching for a Vet who is informative and cares about your pet! Wags to Dogwood! read more

We took our cat here for the first time and it was a very good experience. We scheduled with Dr. Klau. He was very patient and answered all of our many questions. My cat is my baby and I'm very picky about how people interact with him. The doctor has some kind of cat magic. My cat was totally calm around him. I got a feline leukemia and feline aids test done there and the results in 20 minutes! In the past I've had to wait at least three days. The place was very clean and the staff was friendly. I have a cat that was diagnosed with lymphoma and IBD a few months ago. I was having a hard time finding a vet that was compassionate and would be willing to treat him naturally as well as with conventional medicine too. I went to 4 vets and spent thousands of dollars on unnecessary tests and felt all of them just wanted money. I had no idea how many vets don't have your pets best interest at heart. He was dying before my eyes and losing weight rapidly. Dr. Hawkins was so wonderful with us, I wish I had seen him first. He combines conventional and natural medicines and actually talks to you and explains things well and options available. He was extremely reasonably priced and now has my cat eating and gaining weight and feeling better. I am very grateful for him and the staff too. I don't normally leave reviews but felt the need to with him. My cat has since died from this and I feel even more grateful to this clinic, even though he couldn't be saved. When the time came they came to my house and put him to sleep in my arms. It was peaceful and they were very compassionate, making this horrible time a bit better. These people are the best vets I've encountered thus far in my 8 years in Portland. I have 2 midlife ages Tibetan spaniels and I've taken them to dogwood for everything from grooming to having seeds surgically removed from a paw. I do my research for other vets and the prices I've been charged have been reasonable. I never get traditional medication from them though-I go holistic instead. I always get my email questions responded to within 24 hours and the receptionists have always been sweet to me and my dogs. I always see the younger doctor- the older one is okay but he rushes through things. The younger guy is always so gently with my shy pups! With the exception of emergency services I won't take my dogs anywhere else. read more

Took our elderly dog here because of the Great reviews on Yelp. Our chow had snapped a toe nail and Aside from the blood and the fact that it was hanging at a very strange angle, the broken nail was obviously causing her significant pain. We fully expected to pay a $300-500 fee by the time we were done getting an updated rabies vaccination, cost of sedation, surgery, wraps, and antibiotics. The Dr. was up front and stated they may just be able to rip the nail off, in which case some antibiotics would be all she needed. By the time we were heading out the door, we paid ONLY for ripping the nail off and using a Dremmel to clean it up. The doc even admitted at that point that the drugs would be over kill and something we didn't need. So, our visit went from an easy $300 to $46. Thanks Dogwood!!!!! read more

We moved to Gresham for one year so we had to change Vets. We started with Dogwood because they were recommended by Petco. We had to take one of our dogs there for almost the whole year for the same skin infection. They could not treat it right, but of course they could charge us each month. They even wanted us to get tests to see if the dog was allergic to something. After getting a new Vet it was cleared up very quickly, within six weeks. To make matters worse we had took our cats there for shots right before we moved away. We told them not to give them an optional shot. They gave them the shot anyways without our knowledge and consent. We did not realize it until they gave us the bill. The Vet would not remove the charge stating that they had to charge us even though it was done without our consent. Our new Vet charged us about half the price and was much better. In fact if I could do it over again I would have traveled the 45 minutes back to our original Vet in Sherwood. read more

I've been to several different vets in Portland, and Dr Becky (and the whole staff) really impressed me! They are attentive, caring, knowledgeable, have very fair fees, and are great about taking all the time you and your pet need. I like that they do both holistic and conventional medicine. I have taken my cats to Dr Hughs for over 8 years and would trust no one else. He is very thorough and is very compassionate. He treats both me and my furry loved ones like we are members of his family. He always offers several options and lets me decide what I want. Caring for our 4 legged family members is not inexpensive but I have never felt like I was pressured into doing anything I did not want to. He always explained what he felt was best and let me decide what I wanted. He was so kind and loving when I had to have me 17 year old dutchess put to sleep when she was at end of her life in kidney failure. He was so nice and made me feel at ease in my decision. We visited Dogwood back in November of 2012. I could not be happier with my decision to bring my pet to Dogwood Pet Hospital. Dr. Klau and all the staff have been nothing but wonderful. I have a young Newfoundland with an extensive health history. After moving across country we needed to find a veterinary clinic for continued treatment. The staff was friendly and I felt confident when discussing my dog's continued treatment with Dr. Klau. They even called back to check to see how she was doing after changing her medication dosage. We have another Newfoundland at home, and I can't wait to bring him in to meet the staff when his vaccines are due. read more

We took our new rescue cat Oreo to Dogwood. Reason is I read such great reviews about them and how cost effective they were. They checked out Oreo and the vet even clipped his claws. Everyone was very nice. We bought a three month supply of a flea and tick prescription for 75 bucks but that was okay. We knew that Oreo needed it's teeth cleaned so we made the appointment. We were told we would get an estimate. We didn't get it until almost end of business day the day before the appointment. The low end was 725.00!!! The high end was 1,750.00!!! First off those are ridicules prices for a simple teeth cleaning. Second, what on earth could happen to cause a 1000.00 dollar difference and at what end of the process do I get to know? Also I agree with RT's review. When I asked Dr Hughes what they charged for boarding animals he came back with some flip set of answers mostly that he was way to busy to know that information and I could ask the front desk person. Then...after that...he came out in the lobby and sat on a counter behind the desk petting animals!!!??? Too busy? How about I just can't be bothered. I found him to be a bit arrogant and condescending. I found another vet down the street that will clean Oreo's teeth for 195.00. That's my vet! Also...my sister was in the vet business years ago and she pointed out that Dogwood was charging for blood work, possible extractions, and a host of other unnecessary procedures. Moral? If it don't feel right...it probably isn't. Always shop. read more

I was very unhappy with my past experience with this hospital. I felt Dr. Hughs was trying to prescribe treatment for worst case scenarios, instead of trouble shooting more obvious and affordable treatments. Instead of me leaving with antibiotics that day. (which were not offered) I left brokenhearted, hopeless and worst of all my cat so sick and in pain because the the blood work he suggested was 460+ dollars. That I cant afford. It was only until I called back and asked him to take one more look because I thought he may have missed what I was talking about. The vet acted very put out, snooty, and like I was challenging his ego. I asked for antibiotics. And against his professional opinion he prescribed them prefacing that they may work but only a temp fix. He wanted me to pay for blood work and fluids $500+. I felt as though he was trying to make me feel guilty for not throwing money at him, for these treatments that are more money than the average person can afford. -opportunistic -rude -poor bedside manner I am happy to say that the antibiotics ($24.50) I pushed for cleared the infection and my cat is healthy again. I will never ever go back to this vet. Ever. read more

I have been taking my dogs to Dogwood for about three years. I find the office staff to be helpful and pleasant. The facility is clean and up to date. I have, however, been shocked more than a few times by the cost of services. A recent visit for a spay and dew claw removal on a 30 pound dog cost me nearly $900. There were no complications or extenuating circumstances, and this bill, like many others, seemed very excessive to me. read more

i went there as my regular vet was out of town. dr.hughes is who i got. he was moody and grumpy and gruff with me, and his assistant karen to hurry up. i had taken in my cats previous blood work, and told him that the one was have problems has had a problem with constipation and giving mira lax usually helps. explained all this and was concerned about maybe a kidney stone. he took a syringe to the bladder and comes back and says look at this the ua is pale your cat is in kidney failiure. i was shocked and my cat not feeling good he says well according to the blood work this has been going on awhile. i just had his blood work done, and not a mention that there was any problem. he said he needed kidney medicine. i said ok, and then he was in a hurry to get me out and my other cat had blood work in nov, i just found out that he is in kidney failure also.i was shocked so now he says that this cat has to have meds. that he won't refill prxs after 30 days. he said i had to spend $278 per each cat to get more meds. that is when i asked why so much he could not explain that. these people are lying and telling me my previous blood work not adiquidate. i called the office manager david this maybe be his son dr. hughes. i told him i want to have a itemized statement of what lab and what they cover. he didn't want to tell me nor did he give me any estimated of services. i am very upset they are over charging for there care and bad when they don't care about your animals just the money. never see dr. hughes he has a chip on his shoulder and told me after i called him that my cats having complication with the meds not feeling well that they will dye. i got the special kidney diet, and told him my cats were spacey and lethargic from the meds. i wanted my money back they told me no that is too bad . they could have refunded my prx., never used but 4 pills. they just took my $218.00 i hate being rushed out the door. i told them i would never come back they did not to help make my cats quality or life better or more comfortable. shame on you people you took an oath, and not living up to your promise. read more

I would give this a 5 star if the prices weren't so high for their services, and all the staff was super friendly and helpful all the time. :-) However, that said, I drive from Vancouver to take my dogs here because my geriatric dogs deserve the care that is given at this stress free office. Most of the staff is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Dr Hawkins is an amazing person and vet. He has a lot of experience and is very caring and gentle with my dogs. My CKD dog is doing well under his care, which was not the case 10 months ago when I was given a rushed exam and told my dog was in the last stages of kidney failure & was shoved a can of food without consulting what her food allergies or sensitivities were. I like that this office is always kept clean and if there is a mess done by an animal in there office, which mine did, they sanitize and clean right away. This is not the case at the other vet clinic I used to go to because the price was less. I do wish that they would price match on certain products or medicines or even treatments...or give discounts for multiple dogs or because you will be a frequent customer because your dog is quite ill. But, like I said Dr Hawkins is an exceptional vet and he does take the time to email and call to follow up on my dog which is often not done by other vets. He genuinely cares and he looks at solutions from all angles, he never assumes he knows it all like some vets tend to do and rush you out, he looks at the dog as a whole and does his best to work with you, educate, and recommend.
