I was really excited to try this place and when I went in, the atmosphere was already disappointing -- poorly printed fanart of Levi (Attack on Titans) and Gojo Satoru (Jujutsu Kaisen) and knock off Studio Ghibli posters as decor, which is even worse than what I've seen in cheap anime stores. I ignored those red flagf and opted try their taiyaki waffle and taiyaki sundae, since their crepe cakes in the bakery display case had a weak selection and the quality did not look fresh. The sign outside displayed a very delicious looking taiyaki ice cream while what I was served was highly disappointing. Not even crushed oreos as the topping -- just the full on cookie. The taiyaki itself was very small and had more batter than filling. Were all these 5 star reviews bought or did the ownership change? Maybe 5 years ago, SLC would accept something this atrocious passing as "a taste of Japan," but diversity in DTSLC has grown to the degree where this is plain insulting. As a side note, when I went in, there was a little girl (maybe 10 or 12) that complained she ordered and paid, but her order was given to someone else. Rather than refunding the little girl, the cashier said she would go into the kitchen and have them remake the order, only to disappear and not come back. She left the little girl waiting for 10 minutes (as was I, since I was the next patron in line) until the little girl finally gave up and left. When the little girl left, the cashier came back completely empty handed and asked what I wanted to order. Really, that should have been a major red flag! We also split an Ube cream puff that had a cute kitten face etched into it with frosting and also tasted delicious but was significantly more dense than the 20 layer crepe cake. Frankly, I don't understand this place. This place is not run like a real business. Perhaps this is a classic example of being too successful for your own good. I mean, the food is great, absolutely awesome; that is, if you can get any. We have been to Doki Doki three times and only once have actually gotten food. The first time, they said we are too busy and were not taking orders. OK, we ran some errands and went back a couple hours later. Yay, we got pancakes and panna cotta. Everything was delicious. The shop opens at noon. So, on a different day, we got there at noon. We ordered pancakes, but were told they won't make pancakes until 4:00 pm, which, I checked the website and, sure enough, no pancakes before 4:00 pm. OK, we ordered french toast, but were told there is no french toast; they hadn't prepared any yet. OK, no problems, we'll try some honey toast. Nope. She actually said, "There is no bread ready yet." The reason on the website they say they don't make pancakes until 4:00 pm is because of staffing shortages. I get it: no one wants to be there before opening to prep the food and no one wants to be there after opening to make the food. That's the hard part about owning your own business, right: you can't always rely on someone else to do the work for you. At noon, there was only one girl behind the counter and I am assuming she is not the owner. Not only is the owner not able to serve their customers, they put one young girl behind the counter and she has to deal with the ridiculousness that this business isn't actually capable of serving their customers. Look. I think Doki Doki is okie dokie, if you can get the food. My poor family just hasn't figured out the secret, yet, to actually being able to get the food. My advice to the owner, be careful, because at some point in time, sooner than later, we will simply stop trying. read more

This place was awesome!! I highly recommend the Taiyaki ice cream sundae with mochi and the ube ice cream. The wife had a slice of their crepe cake and it too was very good, but I definitely begrudgingly shared my sundae with her. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have the Japanese fluffy pancakes anymore (or at least they didn't when I went in). Their Vietnamese coffee was also quite good. A casual experience with unique Japanese inspired desserts. I am from out of state and decided to visit this place because of the immense amount of recommendations from TikTok. I am sad to say I was disappointed for a few reasons. 1. Workers did not greet a single customer that walked in. This wasn't a problem for me, but I think it's important to also think about those who prefer to order with an employee directly. 3. A lot of desserts advertised were not available. Only things available midday were crepes. I'm not sure if this was due to selling out or menu change. 4. Not a lot of room to sit, and the one table available was dirty and gave the impression of poor maintenance and attention to the dining area. 5. Doki Doki mainly specializes on Japanese style bites. Their options range from delicate crepe cakes to taiyaki ice cream sundaes. Inside the cafe there is an eclectic mix of cute corgi, anime, and cat decorations. Ube Custard Cake: $4.00 - This dessert had a really tasty and prominent Ube flavor. The cake was light and the custard topping was creamy and delicious. If you're an Ube fan, I would highly recommend this adorable dessert. Japanese Cream Bunny: $5.50 - This dessert is a milk based panna cotta. It comes with a choice of sauce to pour on top of the bunny dessert. Sauce options include Ube, Matcha, Dark Chocolate, and Passion Fruit. Craquelin Cream Puff with Vanilla Custard: $4.25 - This adorable cream puff was a delightful bite. The french vanilla flavor was potent throughout the dessert. The crispy craquelin topping added a nice crunch. Taiyaki Waffle with Custard: $3.50 - The taiyaki was unfortunatley overcooked and didn't taste fresh. Traditional Japanese Taiyakis should have a light golden color with and oozing filling. The custard didn't ooze out and almost didn't exist. Overall, I'm a bit on the fence on whether or not I would return to Doki Doki on a regular basis. Their kawaii style desserts are instagramable, but a lot of the items that I was hoping to try at the cafe was not available (e.g., Japanese fluffy pancakes (this must be ordered ahead of time), Honey Toast, Brown sugar Boba ice cream with Taiyaki). I would highly recommend to not to visit the shop during peak business hours. The cafe is quite small and doesn't have much seating. They also only have one touch screen ordering system. Customer service was almost non-existent. When it gets busy, there isn't much room for people to comfortably stand in line and place their order. Recommendation for management to re-think how the platform seating is arranged and being used. It's a cute idea but my party was not comfortable sitting on the floor and on top of stained pillows.
