My hubby and I made a special trip here, just so I could have the gelato. I tried quite a few flavors, and they were all pretty good. I ended up ordering the Marscapone Matcha (which ended up being my favorite), Crema Dolce Neve, and Cassata. I thought all three flavors were delicious, and I like that they weren't boring. This is not your typical gelato place, as their flavors are actually interesting. Who would have thought to put mascarpone and matcha together? I wouldn't have! The Cassata was straciella with fruit, and the Crema Dolce Neve was lemony. Their waffle cone was not typical of other waffle cones I've had, where it was actually sweet and savory. I don't quite think I like it as much as a regular sweet waffle cone, but it certainly did add an interesting element to the overall taste profile. Some may not appeal to you, but I encourage you to try as many as possible in order to find your perfect flavor. I had a small with the dolce neve flavor (I think that's what it was called.... It was lemon and egg custard I believe?) and pistachio. The pistachio was OUT OF THIS WORLD. You have to try this flavor. It's not like regular pistachio ice cream. The pistachio nuttiness comes through so well and rich. At first it was very strong, but as I ate it the smoothness took over and I was sold. The other flavor was great as well! I had never been to Austin before, but my friend who lives there highly recommended Dolce Neve. First of all, there's parking in the back lot. I was there at night so it felt kind of sketch because I was alone. However, as I started walking around to the front, the building next to it had these nice butterflies to keep me company. The outside of Dolce Neve looks like it could have been a one room cottage turned into an ice cream shop so I would describe this as adorbable. Inside, they have a beautiful display of ice cream sandwiches and silver jars they store their ice cream in. One of the unique things I noticed about Texas is how they like to put cheese in their ice cream. And I'm not mad about it. It works and California needs to step up their game. Because I probably wasnt going to come back, I got a scoop of gelatto and a an ice cream sandwich. And because I want to always make sure I'm making the right decision, I tried at least 5 flavors, but the girl working there was beyond gracious to accommodate my indecisiveness. Not only that when I told her I was taking this back to my hotel to eat, she packed it as best she could in styrofoam and saran wrap so it would last the drive back. Top notch service! I got the Fromage Blanc and Apricot Jam for my ice cream flavor and a Crema Dolce Neve sandwich I think. Both were amazing. The savory cheese and sweetness of the ice cream complemented each other perfectly. And it traveled well enough that it was still pretty solid when I got back to my hotel which was 20 minutes away. This is the first time I've had gelato here in the states that is comparable to the gelato I've had in Italy. I also love that they make it here and you can see the process! The people behind the counter are super friendly, helpful, and most importantly, passionate and knowledgeable about their gelato and the gelato-making process. Kudos to them! I tried an array of flavors and the ones that stuck out to me were Pistachio and Chocolate Hazelnut. I love anything with chocolate and hazelnut. I must say, I am a texture eater, and towards the end of my small cup of Pistachio and Chocolate Hazelnut, I was having a hard time finishing it since there wasn't much texture to it. It was very creamy and lightly decadent, but I was craving some sort of crunchiness to the gelato to give it more dynamic and presence. That is just me, personally. The gelato itself was amazing. This way I could experience their main staple item before branching out, which gives me another reason to come back! There's limited parking in the back and only a few small tables inside. Small cup- two flavors. Stracciatella (gelato with fine pieces of chocolate chips) and coffee. My favorite combo at any gelato shop, but dolce neve executed these flavors perfectly! They aren't overwhelming to where I question how many artificial flavors I'm ingesting. They don't even use any artificial flavorings, colorings, emulsifiers, preservatives, or non-natural thickeners anyway! You can tell how carefully they craft their gelato by the texture of the stracciatella- the fine pieces of chocolate chips (not choc. chip morsels) are distributed evenly throughout the gelato to create a smooth, delicate texture. I'm getting hungry now. Gelato sandwich- Don't expect the soft cookies typically used for ice cream sandwiches. Dolce neve's cookies are crunchy but complemented the gelato perfectly! Very very hipster, Austin ish place (think converted house restaurant). High volume traffic + small building = ultra cramped space too. But you know, that's ok when the gelato makes up for it. Very unusual flavors, ranging from your traditional Stracciatella and vanilla to your extreme goat cheese pecan. Dolce Neve has flavors of gelato you won't see anywhere else, like cassata - ricotta, orange zest and dark chocolate. Their flavors are lightly sweetened and have intense punches of flavor. They have some standard flavors but a lot of more artisanal/unique flavors. Apparently the flavors rotate, so don't be surprised if you show up & your favorite flavor isn't available. My favorite gelato place in Austin. I will come here any chance I get! :) My favorite flavor of all time is their black raspberry coconut gelato. It is so pretty and tastes so good. (Coconut haters stay away). I also hate raspberries, but I don't think this has a very strong raspberry flavor! I also like their Dolce Crema (?) flavor which is like an egg custard with lemon flavor. The workers are super nice (especially Janice! hehe), and the portions are worth what you pay. They also have yummy gelato sandwiches I have yet to try. Will try eventually!! A con would be that they do not offer a lot of sorbet flavors. They will usually have one or maybe two, but I feel like they don't rotate it as often as the gelato flavors. The good sorbet flavors are lemon and grapefruit. The whole shop is really cute. They do have limited seats though (indoor and outdoor). Another plus is they have private parking in the back. Mmmm delicious gelato! Not sure if it's the best I ever had, but it's pretty darn good. I got a small with honey and tiramisu. I loved the honey. Oh god it was so good. So soft, creamy, texture was on point. I did feel a little meh about the texture--but I don't think it's a function of the gelato itself, but rather a function of the person who scooped mine--she didn't compress it that much and I think that does make a pretty big difference when you're serving gelato. Not a huge deal since it was still delicious. It was all really nice and light and just super great. I've been here a lot of times, and each time has always been a pretty good experience! I love how you never come back to the same set of flavors (even if you go twice in a week), because they make their gelato in small batches and rotate flavors. A couple of the interesting/stand-out flavors I've had: - Cassata: I just tried the flavor this past weekend, and was pleasantly surprised. Based on a popular Italian dessert, the ricotta-flavored gelato, candied orange peels, and chocolate chunks make for a delicious combination - cheesy, chocolatey, and slightly tangy with a nice texture added by the candied orange peels! - Blackberry & Coconut Milk: I am Filipino, so I really love all things coconut milk. I love how the blackberries added a sort of sour kick to the creaminess of the coconut milk. This was actually one of my favorite flavors that I've tried here! - 70% Chocolate: I'm always a huge fan of all desserts that are thick, rich, and chocolatey. Although this flavor isn't exactly super novel, it's a wonderful classic. - Mascarpone Lemon Zest: Also one of my favorites, tangy from the lemon, but with a cheesy aftertaste. One of my go-to's if I can't decide on what to choose! They also give you really generous portions. For a $4 small, you get two heaping spoons (not scoops, because scoops imply a standard of size, I think) of gelato, and then some, unlike some other ice cream places where you pay $4 and receive two little, round, perfectly-sized scoops. (Lick, I love you, but you're holding back on me.) And, at Dolce Neve, they make the gelato in front of you, which is fun. The Italian man who started this is also great.
